Roof cam members of barts two largest unions will vote on a new contract by the end of the week. Joining us now is michael yaki to talk about the latest in the ongoing bart situation. There does not seem that they are going to vote down these contracts. Guest there is always a small chance. You have ac transit that have negotiated some contracts and they rejected it, twice. I think in this particular case they are pretty happy that the leadership has a better handle on how their membership is feeling. I do not predict a problem. I am sure many people are glad to hear that. And the big announcement monday night that they had the vote cast that they had reached a settlement lt. Gov. Gavin newson saying that they work needs to be steps that this will never happen again. Guest i was not quite sure because the next day he was not talking about legislation. What was he really talking about . Many people were speculating that there could be other ways of transit systems could avoid striking. If you look a no strike provisions in their contract. They could negotiate that because there are different ways of looking at the work rules and pay scales. And my own thoughts. One of the things is that the amount of poison between the labour and management is pretty high. Yes. The accused them of giving an anti Union Negotiator and they also were painting a picture that the unions wanted all this money. Guest i think that my idea would be to expand the bart board. With only nine elected members, why not offer to from the governor. One representing the management and one representing the union and the other representing the government. And i think that it would be a good way to move forward. Both parties have to take some steps because otherwise we will be back again. That begs the question that the atmosphere is so toxic. Is there enough time for healing . Guest there always is. Ive seen organizations change, radical when i was on the board of supervisors for san francisco. The development between the unions and management was extremely large. And when we created the Transportation Authority Labor Relations improved. Because we broke through a lot of the rust. That had built up between the two. And trying to reformat how that would work. They can do that at bart but it is going to take both sides and quite frankly leaderships. Just to go back for we called the michael yaki proposal. Having somebody representing commuters should be a great move. Because the commuters are saying what about us . Guest that is one of the things that when we did the charter membership that changed and took muni await simply from being a department into now, an agency, we put a requirement that would represent the commuters. We feel that it is important to bring that ground level view of people into the decision making. I do not want to break it down on who won or who lost. But so many people said the union came a bay with a very beneficial contract. For guest to put it into context. They came away with a very beneficial contract. And with a wage freeze however, and a contract freeze they did fall behind the times. Over the years. And from a political Public Relations standpoint they really took a beating. I think bart was a loser because they could have won if they did this correctly. They are projecting a 100 million operating surplus in the next several years. I do not think that this is going to increase ferris a increasethe fares for commuters. That is good to hear. And if youd like to connect with michael. You can do so on twitter yakiblog.
