Plus, a bay area woman finally home after spending time in war torn ukraine was she says helping the ukrainian people was personal for her. But first, were going to talk. You made that uc berkeley, Infectious Disease specialist doctor John Swartzberg about the possibility of mask mandates returning to the ban. Welcome back. A study by the mayo clinic showing the ba 5 omicron subvariant is 4 times more resistant to our vaccines. And Health Experts are now calling this train hyper contagious as cases continue to rise. Los angeles expected to be the first. Southern california county to bring back indoor mask mandates. Were wondering what might happen here in San Francisco. Not too far behind los angeles when it comes to covid infections. Joining us now to talk masking is doctor John Swartzberg. Doctor, thank you for joining us this evening. I feel like for months doctors have been saying we likely wouldnt see mask mandates again. I know Alameda County did bring theirs back for a bit earlier this year. Were highly vaccinated population up here in the bay. So what are the chances masks come back for us . Well, its all up to. 2 things. Number one, but this virus decides to do. And right now its deciding to spread really fast. Speak 0. 5, 8. 5 and the other is up to us in terms of what we can do to stop the spread or at least slow it down. So those are the 2 things we have to play with right now. Doctor john Alameda County. As we mentioned, they issued mask mandate on june 3rd at last about 3 weeks. Then there are some critics out there that were referencing transmission rates and whatnot and said that essentially it really made no difference. So is there really a point to Wearing Masks . You cant tell whether wear masks. Mask mandate for 3 weeks would make any difference or not. And frankly, if one county doesnt the bay area, the other 7 counties dont do it, its not going to work very well anyway. It really has to be a pretty concerted effort to get to have all the counties, least most of them, if the mandate to make to make a difference. Heres what we know. We know that wearing high quality indoors does protect you and does protect other people that i think everybody understands that the question really is. If we cant get most people to do that and the number of cases are surging and hospitalizations are going up. Should mask mandates 10 be implemented. And thats really what the the questions centers around. The cdc has been saying for a good while, any county of which San Francisco county is certainly one of them that are in the orange right now or in the transmission levels of red. Everybody should be wearing a mask indoors. If you go to counties, you see people with 90 of people indoors with a mask and other counties with 5 or 10 . When it comes to the severity, though, of these new cases that folks are having, are they more severe . Are you seeing . Thats been one of the probably the only really good thing about this new surge in cases. And that is that were seeing a real disconnect between the high number of infections and relative to what we saw december and january, relatively lower numbers of hospitalizations, people in the icu and people dying. But the number i want to emphasize the word relative because right now in the united states, were adding 30350 people die every day and 2 years ago, 3 years ago, we would have thought that was a catastrophe. And now were saying thats a lot better than 3,000 people were seeing during the day december january, united states. So everything is relative. And doctor swartzberg, you know it. One of the phrases that was used during the pandemic a lot, maybe even overuse was this idea. New normal, new normal. This is the new normal for us. So is masking just simply going to become the new normal for us . Because last summer were bringing back masking in the bay area to curb the issue of the delta variant. Now were dealing with these omicron subvariants is is it just going to be masking every season . Well, theres no get to this fired city of kherson the summer and the winter and the spring in the fall so sees no, is not really an issue. I think which really asking is what are we going to get out of this . Yes, cycle of having to wear masks in tates market where masks and takes months. Well get there. Were going to get already. I think the earlier we were talking about the lower numbers of people being hospitalized compared to december january. But that primarily has to do with is the large amount of background immunity that the people in the bay area have for vaccination and from previous infection. So thats helping drive down a lot of the really serious infections. But its not driving down. Yeah, clippers are influenza. That makes you pretty miserable. Disney land you in the hospital. But i think we can break this cycle. I think we can break it by getting more and more people around this planet vaccinated so that theyre not generating these new variants that cause everybody this planet problems. I think our science is going to take us too much vaccines that are going to be more robust, both in terms of their duration. How many, how how widely they can cover all these different variants. And i think well have newer medications coming down the pike. That will make a big difference. So i think well get well break the cycle. But were nowhere near it right now. Doctor John Swartzberg, thank you as always for your expertise. Uc berkeley, Infectious Disease specialist and professor emeritus, thanks again. Thank you. Youre welcome. Thank you.
