Evacuation center tonight. And kron4s jr stone and Charles Clifford are covering both neighborhoods affected by the evacuations. First, we check in with j r. In the rock springs neighborhood. Two overnight Evacuation Centers are now open in san jose. For those who had to leave their flooded homes. Kron fours Spencer Blake is live at one of those shelters at James Lick High School. Spencer, whats happening there now . Some people are starting to hunker down for the night after a hot meal from the Salvation Army. Some of these people have had a day the rest of us can only imagine. As evacuees got off city buses that shuttled them to this overnight shelter, you could see very somber looks on some of their faces rather than wondering aif their neighborhood would flood, they already knew it had. I had to walk to the neighbors in the water and then we got rescued by the boat. The gym at James Lick High School which is on a week long break from classes holds just over two hundred cots. Later tuesday evening the red cross also openend a second overnight shelter at evergreen valley high school. Some of the people left with their clothes were wet, so we were able to bring in the Salvation Army to help with that. Some arrived barefoot. Volunteers have helped distribute racks of clothing and stacks of towels. Angelina lopez says water started coming into her house within 30 minutes of her dropping her son off at school tuesday morning. I had my son in school and i went to go get him back out because i felt like maybe the school was getting flooded too, so i was really uncomfortable, so thats when i was like, im gonna go get him out. and thats when the water was like to my waist. San jose mayor sam liccardo stopped by the shelter to see how evacuees were doing. I just appreciate all the volunteers who have come out to help us fill sandbags or help out at the shelters. Its really been a great outpouring of support. Many of the evacuees dont speak english, and humanitarian organization tzu chi helped translate. One of lick highs coaches stopped by to help the evacuees, because he was one back in the flood of 1983. I mean i know the feeling of having to be here as they are. Right now theres no telling how long eavacuees will need to stay here, but the red cross will look into other locations for a shelterif people cant return home before School Starts again monday. Again, for anyone who still needs a place to stay, come to James Lick High School or evergreen valley high school, to spend the night. Live in san jose, Spencer Blake, kron four news. Now , in addition to the hundreds of people who were forced to flee the flood, dozens of residents along coyote creek spent the day trying desperatly to save their homes from rising waters. Natsalong 17th street in san jose on tuesday, neighbors rushed to pile sandbags against their homes in a last ditch attempt to hold back the rising waters of coyote creek. Sotthis is really bad, yeah. The creek runs through julie smalls back yard. She and her family have been watching the water level rise for the past few days. Sotit was flooding yesterday in our back yard, maybe a foot. This is about 15 foot higher than it was this morning. Their back yard and basement are now flooded. Tuesday the family spent the afternoon stacking sandbags to try to keep the problem from getting any worse. Sot its actually helping, i wish we had the sandbags a little earlier. A half mile to the south, flood waters complete covered this section of 16th street near the Williams Street bridge. Nats lives on this block. His house is now completely surrounded by water. Sotyeah, we have a big remodel in the back yard and thats all under water right now. We also have three feet of water in the basementfor the time being, he and his family are going to stay with friends across the street. Hes hoping the water recedes soon. Sotits really suprising. We werent expecting that at all. We have flood insurance. I didnt want to pay for it, but i have to because i have a mortgage. So im really glad i have it now. More rain could spell more trouble for the area. Lets check in with kron4s chief meteorologist brittney shipp. Brittney is there more rain on the way . Flooding concerns continue also in the south bay. The coyote creek has caused a portion of highway 101 to flood. Since about 9oclock this morning, upwards of 4 feet of water flooded the freeway. Cars have been redirected. While crews work on draining all that water. Kron 4s alecia reid joins us live from morgan hill tonight. How is cleanup coming along . There are 26 trucks with gravel reinforcing the makeshift dam. About half of those trucks have already gone through here, but itll be another couple of hours before this section of freeway will be ready to reopen. The Water District is building a dam that will reroute the water and stop it from flooding the freewway any more than it already has. Coyote creek topped its banks and went into the coyote canal earlier this morning. Eventually the pressure caused a break in the canaland all that water flooded this section of the freeway. Vehicles have been rerouted all day and night. Causing a lot of traffic and frustrationespecially in the evening commute when folks were trying to get home. Sot ive been coming from gilroy and it took me 2 hours to get to this point. So its been really slow and really frustratingsgt. Tom melden california Highway Patrol sot whenever we put this much traffic onto a city street or county road it impacts them and makes it frustrating for the motorists but theres nowhere else to put them. Its extremely unsafe to have them come up here. Aaron baker Santa Clara Valley Water District sot right now because the creek is so high weve got so much water coming into the canal here that its just overtopping in many areas, in fact it found a weak link here that has unfortunately flooded the freeway. Standupthe freeway is still being drained. Once all the water has been cleared from 101, caltrans will come in and clean up all the debris. The goal is to reopen the freeway by midnight tonight. Between vine hill and sugarloaf. Was closed after this massive mudlisde blocked the road back on february 7th. Crews worked around the clock for nearly two weeks. And have finally cleared enough of the storm debris to get drivers back on all lanes of the highway. City officials are blaming the spillway at the Anderson Reservoir for the flooding in san jose. A 90 foot redwood tree topples onto a family home. Luckily no one was hurt. But the damage toll is significant. And next. Stunning video shows a local highway nearly collapsed. The officer can be heard saying that right before he started shooting it, part of the cliff crumbled and went down into the creek below. The shoulder. It is gone. One of the lanes, also buckling and gone. The guard rail is just dangling right now. Caltrans is wowrking to repair it. But the solution for now is to run what the chp calls a traffic control. There is one lane open for both directions. And that is causing quite a back up. And right now traffic near highway 50 in meyers is not moving. Chp holding vehicles because of a threat of an avalanche coming onto the road. Meanwhile, interstate 80 is meanwhile, interstate 80 is closed in both interstate 80 is closed in both directions in the sierra. Eastbound traffic. People trying to get from the bay area to tahoe. Arent getting there right now assuming theyre stuck on the freeway. Eastbound 80 is closed in colfax. Westbound 80 is closed at the nevada state line. There is no estimate on when 50 or 80 will reopen. Clearly driving tonight is not a good idea. The winter storm advisory is in effect until 4am tomorrow. A foot and a half of snow are expected before the storm moves on. Tonight five people are thanking the San Jose Fire Department after being rescued from the trees at a flooded golf course. Rescue crews say five People Living at a homeless encampment near los lagos golf course were trapped after the coyote creek flooded. Youre looking at this mornings rescue in our footage from our partners with abc news. Officials needed boats to get to the people. Some of them took to the trees to escape the dangerous waters. Here all five of the people were successfully rescued. No significant injuries were reported. As the storms continue. Officials are warning people to stay away from standing water. Avoid downed trees and power lines. And to get out of any areas where water appears to be rising. Toss weather flooding concerns continue in vacaville. A peaceful sunday afternoon for one family ended with a giant redwood tree falling on top of their house. Kron fours Philippe Djegal reports from peach tree avenue. Where the family says the end to this story could have been a lot worse. The home isnt totaled. But the damage is significant. While he was watching a Golf Tournament on tv with his father and a friend. His mother in the kitchen baking. Sot it came into the living room and the family room just sort of busted in the ceiling.
