But first lets go ahead and go to well, lets just talk about the preparations for the are we going to go to jacqueline . No. Okay. Lets go to jr stone who is out there in the crowds root now. Jr, what is going on. Reporter the barriers are now up as we inch closer and closer to 2015. When there are fireworks like these involved, it will be hectic. Canisters, wires, magic powder and these massive steel metal tubes that blast above the bay at midnight. They go a thousand feet in the air and perform at that altitude. Theyre big. Reporter 18 workers put final touches on the new years eve fireworks. A setup put together on this barge at at t park and put together on the peer 14 and the Ferry Building. This is a big show. This is a big city. Were celebrating in the right manner. Reporter likely celebrating with big crowds. Traffic backups are expected and drivers say past new years eves have been nonstop for them. People fighting for rides. Who is going the furthest. Its pretty hectic. Cysting through a sea of human beings trying not to run anybody over. Reporter ask any of these guys about the show theyre putting together and they will tell you. 15 minutes of rock em, sock em wonderful colors and patterns. Its definitely worth coming out to. Reporter it should be a good Fireworks Show with the clear weather that were having. And keep in mind the fireworks that you saw in the story also did the fireworks for the 75th anniversary of the golden gate bridge. Jr stone, kron 4 news. Happening now, San Francisco police are preparing to handle massive crowds and potential protests during the celebrations tonight. Bart is also preparing and making changes to its operations tonight as well. Scott is live at the bart station with more. Scott. Reporter vicki, we are anticipating some protests to start in about an hour behind me at the embarcadero station. When you have so many people coming into the city for new years and the protest thats will happen, police will have their hands full tonight. Lets take a look over here. You can see several officers that have been lined up. They lined up their motorcycles here. They are standing there on standby just monitoring things. Lets go ahead and take some video here. I can tell you that we are expecting those protesters to show up at the bart station. San Francisco Police Department Says they have beefed up patrols in the area for new years eve and they will be ready in case any of the protests happen to turn violent. The primary focus out here will be the new years eve events. You combine so many people coming into the city with the protests, theres a lot going on. You see crews putting barriers up and making sure that certain areas will be blocked out to people out here. I did ask sfpd if there was any possibility that the protesters coming out here tonight could try to stop bart service and they say they dont know. They do say they will be ready for anything. We expect large crowds to come to San Francisco for various events like the Fireworks Show and a number of other bars and restaurants hosting new years parties. We have Additional Police personnel planned or scheduled for tonight. Again, with the protests, we always ask that if they want to come and protest, we welcome First Amendment activities as long as they remain peaceful. Reporter peaceful. Thats the keyword here. Peaceful. Thats what all of the Police Officers out here emphasizing for the protesters. Hopefully it will remain that way. A couple of transportation notes for you if you are taking bart into city. Something that you should know is that the embarcadero station will be closed. It closed five minutes ago. Also, i can tell you now that the protests are supposed to be starting at 9 00 and will last until 1 00 in the morning, im told. Kron 4 news reporting live from San Francisco. Were keeping an eye on the chilly temperatures. Right now not too bad in some places. San francisco is still 52. But temperatures dropping into the low 40s in a number of locations including san mateo and san jose. All of those places 44. 42 in sunnyvale. Were headed for the 30s and even the 20s overnight. So if youre headed out this evening, 40 for the most part right now. But those 30s are not far behind. As we move into the 10 00 hour, you can see the 30s filling in inland. And then by midnight, were seeing 30s in the north bay. More 30s in the north bay. Portions of the south bay will be in the 40s though, closer to the coastline. Then the 30s take over the picture tomorrow morning. Also we will see some 20s briefly tomorrow morning out the door. So here is what you can expect this evening. Its chilly out there right now. Calm winds. Were in the 40s. By midnight, a freeze warning goes into effect for much of the bay area. Temperatures again hovering around freezing or even in the 20s. Im looking forward to making new friends and meeting new people mostly. 2014 i have been blessed with many things. New job, new friends. Com where we have tips on getting around with public transportation. A huge car crashing down on a car in milpedis. Bad weather still stalling the Recovery Efforts of flight 8501. You will see san jose officers patrolling in twos this new years eve. Thats next. The san jose Police Department has decided to assign officers to pair up tonight. Police say the move is in response to alerts about potential threats to police nationwide. Though the Department Says it has not received a specific threat. Kron 4s alyssa reid is in san jose tonight. Does this mean additional officers on the street. It means the same. The Police Chiefs decision means that half of the patrol car thats are usually on the streets are off the streets. He believes that decision will mean its safer for cops to travel around and will equal Faster Response times for the community should there be an emergency. Officer safety is of paramount importance. Reporter two cops for each patrol car. The decision was made as a result of the threats. Reporter not directly to the san jose Police Department but the social media threats were directed to Law Enforcement officers nationwide. Were just on high alert. Reporter the warning claim tonight will be kill a pig night. And the new years eve massacre. This department isnt taking any chances. No officer is allowed to patrol solo. The number that are on duty remains the same as previous new years eves. But Authorities Say fewer cars on the streets will work in their favor. The benefit of having two patrolmen per vehicle is the officers will be able to get to the priority calls a lot quicker. Normally the officers have to wait for their field officer, wait for their backup officer to get there before they enter into a crime scene or enter into a situation. Reporter doubling up isnt typical for this department. But in light of the two officers in new york city that were recently murdered, the chief here says these threats, he is taking them seriously. Reporting live in san jose, alyssa reid, kron 4 news. Passions rang out at the San Francisco hall of justice. The group is calling for action tonight. It will hold a protest this evening near the Embarcadero Bart station starting at 9 00 p. M. They say theyre committed to speak out about the grave incompetent jus in the deaths of Michael Brown and eric garner. Our new years resolution is to increase and extend these powerful demonstrations to which this country has not seen in decades, maybe 50 years, and to spread them out into the next year. They also plan to protest the death of oscar grant, the young man shot by a transit officers several years ago on new years eve. The officer was convicted but grants family and others believe that he should have received a much longer sentence. Protesters in oakland, theyre planning their own rally tonight, just as they did on christmas day. That demonstration did turn violent with trash fires and vandalism in jacqueline square. Organizers say protesters will gather on 14th and broadway at 9 00 tonight. Jacqueline. Vicki, it is getting chilly out there right now. Temperatures dropping into the low 40s in a number of places, including oakland, concord, santa rose a its 45 in livermore. Still mild in San Francisco at 50 degrees. Its not going to stay that way for long. Tonight temperatures will drop into the 20sand 30s practically bay area wide. We will get to the freeze warning in a moment. New years day, sunny skies but still on the chilly side. We will start warming into friday and especially as we head into the weekend. So here is a look at that freeze warning. Again, most of the bay under this through midnight tonight through 9 00 tomorrow morning. We will see temperatures plummeting into the 20s and low 30s. Sub freezing for several hours. Something to keep in mind if you have any Early Morning plans. Whether youre partying tonight or heading out the door early tomorrow morning. Also a frost advisory in effect for our bayshores. Same time frame, low to mid 30s expected here. We will wake up with the frosty windshields. And, again, temperatures freezing out the door tomorrow morning. Sub freezing actually through the inland valleys. 30 in concord and antioch. Freezing in san raphael. Same thing down in san jose. 45 for oakland. 40 in down ton San Francisco. The afternoon highs not very high. Mostly 50s. But low 50s for the most part. 54 in San Francisco and in napa. Same thing in santa rosa. Mid 50s down in sunnyvale and san jose. As for the sere a a frigid start to the day there tomorrow. 0 degrees the morning low. 31 the afternoon high. Notice temperatures trending up friday and saturday. We will see the same thing locally. After we get through one more very cold night. So tomorrow afternoon on the chilly side. Friday things warm a little bit. We will start the day freezing in much of the bay area. As we work our way into the weekend and the rest of the week, temperatures will reach a more comfortable level. What is hampering Recovery Efforts near the airasia plane crash site. Also celebrations already underway in other parts of the world. Paris rang in 2015 with a huge Fireworks Show. We will show you more celebrations around the globe ahead. The grim process of recovering the victims of the airasia plane crash has hit a snag. Rough weather halted the progress. The progress that will eventually bring only more heart ache. Ryan noble has more on the recovery. Reporter starting to come to grips with reality. Until yesterday morning and afternoon, we still hoped we would get a miracle. That our families are still alive. Reporter a reality that there will likely be no survivors. This as search crews slowly begin to recover wreckage and bodies and believe the bulk of the aircraft is at the bottom of the java sea. It wont change the location of the wreckage but it will change the location of anything floating, parts of the plane, any human remains. It will really move them further down with the current. Reporter it is monsoon season in Southeast Asia and the weather is unpredictable. At times the seas are calm but right now the open windows of opportunity are coming at the wrong time. At the current time the clouds are gone, the clouds are gone and its not raining but its dark. By morning, the storms will be back. The task of returning the victims to shore continues. Families attempt to gather information that provides little comfort as loved ones prepare for the inevitable. Because my mother, my sister, we were very close. It happened about a half hour before midnight. A witness in shanghai says the stampede was triggered by people scrambling to get coupons that looked like dollar bills. But the Chinese Government says that the cause is under investigation. The crowd had gathered for a university at a river front park. Still ahead, police will be watching out for drivers making trouble out on the roads. Chp is out in full force. We ride along with them tonight. They came here early so they could get a front row spot on what they are determined to make one of the biggest celebrations on new years eve in the world. Around the world, new years celebrations are underway from hong kong to the philippines to paris, london, and berlin. The clock has struck midnight in many major cities across the globe. Here in new york city, the countdown is on. You could call it the epicenter of new years eve in america. One Million People are expected to pack into times square tonight. Security is ramped up, making sure that revelers not only have a great time but a safe night. We will be patrolling the city by air, by sea, on the ground and in the subway system. Reporter and the world will be watching. A whopping 1 billion are expected to tune in to watch the iconic ball drop live on television. For 60 seconds the ball will be the focus of the worlds attention as it drops 120 feet to mark the beginning of 2015. Its covered in 32,000 led lights and 2600 panels made by Waterford Crystals. The lights change colors every few minutes making 16 million combinations. And you can hear the music behind me ramping up to the head liner. Taylor swift will be performing just about 20 minutes before the ball. And one ton of confetti comes down in times square and all of these people celebrating, vicki. Back to you. President putin addressing the crowd at red square. He said in a statement that he hoped for peace between the nations. But that there needed to be equality and mutual respect. Sydney, australia was one of the first major cities of the world to celebrate the new year. Its always impressive display there. A million and a half people gathered across the city harbor to take it all in. And its also 2015 in new zealand. Impressive fireworks burst forth from the sky tower. Its the only local and live celebration here in the bay area. The party begins at 11 30 tonight right after the news. A winter storm is being blamed for at least three deaths in california. Strong wind gusts knocked down trees and power lines all over the bay area. And that frightening moment captured by a Home Security camera. Its one of many downed trees. It came crashing down in the high winds in the city of milpitas. Nobody was hurt. But the 30foottall pine landed right on top of the stocker familys Jeep Cherokee and narrowly missed a couple of other cars in a neighbors driveway. We heard the wind making a lot of noises. So we didnt really hear anything that significant. We didnt know until someone let us no he. Somebody knocked on the door and we came out. And we saw the tree on the car. This is your college car. Thats correct. Its a goner. Gone. Residents here estimate the winds were gusting upwards of 40 Miles Per Hour when the tree came down, taking down a light pole with it. The wild weather is being blamed for killing a Harbor Patrol officer on catalina island. Winds topping 40 Miles Per Hour there, kicking up the waters and beaching several boats. The officer reportedly died after becoming pin between a boat and a rock. Authorities have not released his name. Over 100 people stuck in the snow. A winter storm from canada brought heavy winds along with several inches of snow near crest line in southern california. Almost 140 motorists were rescued after being stranded in the snow in the San Bernardino mountains. And still ahead, police will be watching out for trouble on the roads. Temperatures will drop into the 20sand 30s, wherever you see the pink on the screen. It will stay below freezing for several hours as well. Keep that in mind. You will weak incompetent to frosty windshields there and in the bay where a frost advisory has been issued from 12 00 a. M. To 9 00 a. M. Temperatures dropping into the mid 30s. That frost threat will end though by the later morning hours. So here is a look at the numbers. Boy, its going to be really cold out there tomorrow morning. Freezing down in san jose. Same thing in san raphael. Below freezing in santa rosa, napa and fairfield. 30 in concord and antioch. 29 out in livermore tomorrow morning. For the afternoon, its going to be on the cool side. Low to mid 50s again. Struggling to get to 50 in antioch. 53 in san raphael. 55 for oakland. Again, we will start warming towards the weekend. Tomorrow just a frigid and frosty start to the day. Friday, still on the cool side in the morning. Still in the 30s. But a little warmer. In fact, that warming trend will continue saturday, sunday and through early next week. Happening now, the chp is cracking down on new years eve with what it calls maximum enforcement period. Officers will be highly visible out on the roads catching people behaving badly. An ian der son rode along with the chp. Reporter even before the official start of maximum enforcement period, officers were out looking for people breaking the law. To the left. Go. Pull to the left. Reporter maximum enforcement is when chp brings in more officers to patrol the roads. Theyre looking for all types of traffic Violations Including expired registrations. A quirk search showed there was much more. She did have a suspended license because she didnt take care of tickets. Reporter despite being pulled over she thinks that maximum enforcement is a good idea. They should because theres plenty of people on the road that shouldnt be driving like me. Reporter there were many more. Minutes after she was pulled over there was say single driver in the carpool lane and he didnt have license or insurance. Chp says its not uncommon for officers to find lots of violations during traffic stops. We find all sorts of things in the car. Drugs, guns. A simple registration stop, you can find quite a bit. We have no clue what were walking into it. Reporter while this maximum enforcement period may be an inconvenience for the people who are ticketed, its another way that the chp is trying to make the roads as safe as possible.
