Officers think the attempt was premeditated. He was wearing body armor. The soul weapon was affixed with a barrel magazine. Reporter hours earlier his own son was shot inside this city house. All i hear is a lot of Police Coming down. Reporter the shooting was accidental but its hard to ignore what powell did after it happened. Several persons present inside the residence at the time of the shooting. Person of interest who was present at the time of the shooting but left prior to officers arrival was identified. Reporter that person of interest is powell. Neighbors have seen to have family here and there and have noticed the boy shot looking at them from a window. Me and my friend always right around. Like over here. Like with our bikes. And i always see them up there yelling at him. s theres a lot of activity over there. But nothing bad. I was shocked when i found out that there was a gun in the house to begin with. They dont seem like the kind of people that would even have a gun. Reporter the toddler is in critical but stable condition. His father is too. Police have not had the chance to interrogate powell about either one of these cases. Powell has served prison time before for robbery. And drug offenses. In vallejo, spencer blake, kron 4 news. We now know the identity of the man who shot a San Francisco Police Officer on friday. 26yearold Nicholas Mcwhorter of pacifica died from his injuries yesterday. Officers were shot mcwhorter during a suit in the sunset neighborhood after he shot an officer in the head. That officer whose name is not released is listed in critical but stable condition at San Francisco general hospital. Sfpd says the injured officer is partially paralyzed on one side of his body. Police will hold a town hall meeting on thursday to give area residents more information about what happened during the shooting. Now to the east bay where police say it was a fight over wood pallets that led to murder. Tonight a suspect is in custody, identified and accused of running over a warehouse worker on purpose. They matched matched field will description from a deadly hit andrun in san leandro just hours before. Discussion was given to Law Enforcement agencies throughout the San Francisco bay area. Reporter the search was on after the suspect now in custody was believed to have hit and killed a True World Foods warehouse employee with his truck just before noon. New tonight at 10 00, a renewed effort to save lives on one of the worlds most famous landmarks. Suicide prevention on the Golden Gate Bridge is getting more money and more people. Grant lodes is here with details and an update on the Suicide Prevention net. Is it working . They are adding more people. So that is the first line of defense for right now. The bridge district general manager says three times more people are using the Golden Gate Bridge to try to commit suicide now compared to the year 2000. The neighbors are even more alarming when you consider the spike in young people trying there. Last year alone Suicide Prevention Staff Members patrolling the bridge stopped more than 150 people who were there to jump. This year on pace to see 200 people try it and now five more Staff Members will be added to the bridge suicide patrol bringing the total number of employees doing that job to 36. More americans will die from suicide this year than from automobile accidents. We have lots of campaigns to click it or ticket but dont drive drunk and install airbags, we need to do more in the suicide intervention area. s tragic in the last few years weve had a fivefold increase in the number of young people come to the bridge to hurt themselves. We want to do everything we can to help save these young lives. Certainly alarming theres been such an increase in teens and young adults jumping and committing suicide. So bridge officials are now teaming up with the National Crisis and text hotline putting up signs like these encouraging people to text for help. A lot of young folks use texting more than calling a suicide nat. It is still spent in the coming years. As soon as 2019 but that project has been delayed many times for a variety of reasons. See what it looks like now, once the net is there, that is what it will look like. But for now the first line of defense are these new people patrolling the bridge. The five new Staff Members, most of them on bikes, some of them Walking Around and the gm says they will walk up to people who are alone or somehow showing a red flag and say hey, are you here to hurt yourself . Be very direct and oftentimes the person will respond verbally. Saying yes. Oftentimes nonverbally. They will respond confirming that as well. The goal is to try to save lives. Would cost 700,000 to hire these five new people. Thats not salary but all the cost that goes associated with new employees in uniform and the like but they say its worth it if you can save even one life. Thanks. Now this. Jury selection continues tomorrow in the sierra lamarr murder trial. Morgan hill teenager disappeared for years ago in her body has never been found. Prosecutors allege she was kidnapped and killed by Antolin Garcia torres. Kron 4s dan kerman has the very latest on the case. Reporter march 16 of 2012 the 15yearold sierra lamar was last seen as she left her home near morgan hill and headed for school. Despite repeated searches she was never found. But this man Antolin Garcia torres was subsequently arrested for her murder. Monday the first of 1200 prospective jurors were brought in and told they could be deciding Garcia Torres eight. The biggest challenge for the defense is going to get people coming to this case with an open mind that havent already decided the case based on all of the media attention. Reporter Garcia Torres faces a three other counts of attempting to kidnap three different women during carjackings prior to sierra lamars disappearance. Legal analyst say that will prove to be difficult for the defense. The prosecution is going to take these other women who will come forward and say what happened to them and show that mr. Garcia torres has a propensity to attack women, that this is his his m. O. And that there was nothing innocent between him and sierra lamar. Reporter prosecutors may also have their hands full. To clr mars dna has been linked to Garcia Torres car her body was never found. The lack of a body is difficult for the prosecution both in in proving a murder but also asking for a Death Penalty in which these jurors may still have a lingering doubt about her being alive. Reporter the prospective jurors are from the northern part of Santa Clara County and are filling out a 32 page questionnaire which includes questions about the Death Penalty and what theyve heard about the case. Actual questioning of jurors will begin on november 14. By then we should know whether california voters have put an end to the Death Penalty. If they have, legal analysts say they might be able to get a jury in about a month. If the Death Penalty is still on the table, it might take several months to get a jury. Reporter i talked with a man here in the Marina District whose home was actually red tagged during the loma prieta quake and it actually took his family a year just to get back here. His wife was home in the Marina District with their three kids. Including the couples 11 day old baby girl. Quite scary. My buddy we had a tv set and when we finally got to the parking lot as we were leaving the parking lot, they show me the marine on fire. And the camera was zoomed in and as a zoomed back, i could see the top of my house. And im roughly on carroll street at this time and went crazy. Reporter the house was just a couple hundred feet from the fire. In fact this cracked that went through his home during the earthquake may have been the fisher that started the gas leak and led to the marina fire. Ed said he drove on sidewalks through traffic to get home that evening. At one point ditching his car and running a mile and a half to get to his family. If you can imagine being in beirut, it was helicopters, the gas smell, still daylight. And it was eerie. Quiet, you know . Just the smell was what it was. All the gas in the air. Reporter talk about hitting close to home, the building two doors down from his house collapsed when the quake hit. When i came around the corner i stopped dead in my tracks and if you can imagine seeing a dinosaur for the first time laying dead, thats what it felt like. It was surreal when i looked. That was our neighbor building in the street. Reporter the family some of whom can be seen here made it out okay but there are lasting scars for many. Eds sister was visiting when the quake hit. She hasnt been back. She has not been back. No sir. She lives in louisville, kentucky. Reporter edes building was retrofitted for earthquake. He believes its in much better shape now. Than it was 27 years ago. He says even when small . Hit now he doesnt hear that cracking that he once heard. Live in San Francisco, j. R. Stone, kron 4 news. One of the big changes since the ground shook 27 years ago the new eastern span of the bay bridge during the 1989 quake a 50foot section of the old upper span gave way. One woman was killed. Following the earthquake it was decided that the western bay bridge span would need to be retrofitted while the eastern span would have to be replaced altogether. New tonight at 10 00, we talked to caltrans about how the new span was fair in an earthquake similar to how it would fair. If they were to be another major earthquake, it would certainly have some damage, but it has been designed and built so that it would be a lifeline in that sort of instance. So it would be utilized for transporting resources and what have you on both San Francisco to oakland and vice versa. Seismologists say if the trimmer 27 years ago had lasted even a few seconds longer the damage would have been even more catastrophic. Iraqi Kurdish Forces are advancing slowly but surely on isis in the massive operation to retake the city of mosul. Iraqis have said to have retaken about 80 miles of road back from isis. The road to mosul is a dangerous one nonetheless. Suicide car bombers, just some of the challenges as they move ever closer to their goal. Even a group of journalists covering the operation could not avoid gunfire. Even if the nfl gives the go ahead and votes yes to vegas davis has set a move will not happen overnight.
