And tonight we hear from photographer graziella about her enduring images. Welcome to our viewers on Public Television in american and around the globe. Mays only rival dropped out of race earlier too. Leader s new i am honored and humbled to have been chosen bety conservative party to become its leader. I would like to pay tribute to the others during the campaign for the drea leadsom dignify she shaz shown today. Even to make her party work will be quite a feat. Brexit means brexit and were going to make a success of it. Second, we need to unite our country, and third, we need a strong, new positive vision for the future of our country. A vision of a country that works not for the privileged few but that works for every one of us because were going to give people more control over their lives and thats how, together, we will build a better britain. Thank you. [applause] this privet politician will take the biggest job in public life. Without a vote even by her partys mention, let alone the general public. Theresa may is in because she walked out. Just before 11 00 this morning, the rumor milligan to whirl. Was Andrea Leadsom about to quit in for me personally, ive won the support of 84 of my colleagues last thursday, a great expression of confidence for which i am incredibly gray. Nevertheless, this is less than ry party e parliament and after careful can, i do not believe this is sufficient support to lead a strong and stable government, should i win the leadership election. I have, however, concluded that the interests of our country are best served by the immediate apoifment of a strong and wellsupported Prime Minister. Im therefore withdrawing from the leadership election and i wish theresa may the very greatest success. Why have you changed your mind . There was disbelief in one of westminsters impossibly immaculate side streets. Why is she withdraw something some of her supports are furious about what they call the abuse that was thrown at her, especially after she suggested in an interview that they would be a good Prime Minister partly because she has children and theresa may does not. One of her team told me the abuse was too much 6. We think it is in the best interests of the country to say we should withdraw. Has she been fully i wouldnt put it that way. We face very fast indicated apofpbletse and if we were opponents and if we were to continue the damage would be to great. The level of personal abuse aimed at her is something ive been rather appalled about. Even if ms. May was the should ing choids, we have had a vote. I cant help denying that im disappointed. Its 20 past 12 00. Andrea leadsoms surprise decision to move out of the leadership days means that in a matter of days, the new Prime Minister might be in number 10. Over to the tory machine to decide what happens to the government next and they didnt waste any time. Following the decision of the withdrawal of andro leadsom from the contest, theresa may is the only leading candidate. Will she be Prime Minister by the end of this woke . Well continue our process. In the space of less than half an hour, Andrea Leadsom quit the race and the tory party have confirmed theresa may will be the next Prime Minister. Are you looking at the faces of some of treatsa mays new cabinet . P tory Party Members who have given big support. He wont spend a moment longer than is polite in downing street before living for the final time. With these changes we no longer need to have a prolonged period of transition. Tomorrow, i will share my last cabinet meeting, on wednesday, a meeting for Prime Ministers questions and well have a new Prime Minister in that building behind me by wednesday evening. Thank you very much. To leave office must be painful but programs with it some light relief. A hum, a tune from the Prime Minister. We wont call him that for ong. Bbc news, westminster. Atty kay i spoke a short time ago with a bbc reporter asking him who is theresa may . Shes been the head of Homeland Security here in the u. K. For the last six years, shes been in charge of overseeing the immigration and policing service. She has a reputation as a pretty tough cookie. Shes known as an icy, frosty sort of crarkte at times. Some look at the part shell play in the brexit negotiations and wonder whether she might be the u. K. s version of angela merkel. She was undoubtedly the most experienced of the two women running for this top job by a long way. Also, though, she has been on the remain side of the Referendum Campaign and now shes making it very clear in the interests of trying to unite both sides within her party that brexit does moan brexit under her new leadership. Katty kay the german chancellor said the job of the Prime Minister is to clarify its relationship with europe. How is theresa may going to do this since she vopetted to stay . She has said she will appoint a whole new government appointment lead by a very minister from the brexit side of the campaign who will be in charge of the brexit negotiations. In terms of when the formal procedure kicks in article 50 under e. U. Rules, theresa may has made clear she wants to delay that. She doesnt see any sense in doing it immediately. Reason to do e is some groundwork in preparation. Some feel there can be no negotiation until these formal Divorce Proceedings are triggered. But in treesa they, someone who has a track record of being quite a tough cocky in negotiations and for the time being that is the strategy she seems intent on following. Katty kay that was the bbcs political reporter speaking a short time ago. The United States is to send 560 more troops to iraq to help in the fight against islamic state. The announcement was made by the u. S. Secretary ash carter on an unannounced visit to baghdad. As the main stronghold switches to mosul. Air ays ago they took an base. The United States announced that two more detainees will be released from it Guantanamo Bay prison. Two have been transferred to serbia. That means that 76 people are still being held at guantanamo for more than a decade. Indias government is sending 00 additional troops to kashmir following the worst violence there the for years. 30 having killed and more than 200 injured in clashes. Theyre triggered by the shooting of a well known militant leader on friday. Thousands joined a rally in dhaka in protest against recent militant attacks in which dozens were killed. The u. S. Has warned americans to consider carefully whether they need to travel to bangladesh following the terror attacks. Now, to michigan, where two sheriffs deputies have been shot and killed at a courthouse barrien county in the southwest part of the state. The location is now skier. The bbcs peter bose joined me with the latest. Peter the details are still rather sketchy. It happened in the middle of the afternoon, local time at about 2 30 and we understand from some local reports this may have been in a thirdthroor courtroom. Theres at least one report that suggests that a man who was being taken away to prison had grabbed a gun from a sheriffs deputy and started to fire. As you say, we know that two Court Officials have die died and the gunman himself has been shot dead. Further than that, we dont know precisely any sort of motive or other details. Witnesses outside the building described a certain amount of chaos understandably in a situation like that with emergency vehicles arriving at the scene. And yes, the has tweeted that the building is governor has tweeted that is building is now secure and he is praying for the victims. Katty kay this most recent recent incidental in michigan comes as Police Officers in dallas has urged members of the black Live Matter Movement to get off the protest line and on the police force in order to improve rellses. This this as a day before the before the president will address the situation in dallas. The bbcs nick bryant has more. Nick these snapshots are now renled nerd color, not black and white. But it seems we witnessed an america over the past few days recall some of the racial turbulence of the 1960s, albeit on a smaller, less epic scale. [gunshots] what sparked this fury is not just the Police Shootings of black men but the fact theyve been caught on camera and instantly gone viral. The smart phone is bearing witness. He or she can document what he or she sees to tell the world, you think weve been lying . Heres the truth. You think weve been making this up . Heres the truth. You think this is smith this it is fact. Now we capture it on a smart phone. It has changed the landscape and changed the game. The black lives Matter Campaign started out as a hashtag on social media. Now a nationwide protest movement. Here protests in baton rouge, louisiana, where a black man was killed by officers last week. But the flowers that adorn this squad car in dallas show how the slaughter of five Police Officers in the city has generated a wave of sympathy for the police. Not least because their actions saved black lives. They stayed there with us and i saw other officer another officer get shot in front of me. There were two. The Martin Luther king memorial in washington stands as testament to the landmark reforms of the civil rights era, the end of segregation but the struggle for black equality is far from over. Its always been difficult to slate areas like policing where the actions of a single officer can spark such a violent chain of events. In the midof this turmoil, barack obama will head to dallas. But gone are the days when people here thought that the countrys first africanamerican president could bridge its racial divide. Nick bryant, bbc news, washington. Katty for more on the incidents which have occurred over the past week and the fallout, im joined by wesley larry. Thanks for joining me. What can president obama say in dallas tomorrow that he hasnt already said during the course of his presidency to ease tensions . Theres nothing he can say. Hes spoken expensively on this topic previously but two, the idea that any elected official or president can ease racial tensions is not quite how its going to work. I think what we have right now is a tone and a feeling in dozens of cities, thousands of people taking to the streets and those people are not going to stop taking to the streets or not cooled or calmed because of a speech by the president. The president has addressed the nation every day for the last four days and it hasnt stopped any of the demonstrations. Katty what might calm the tensions realistically, if anything . I dont know theres anything we can do that is going to stop that. Most of people say theyd like to see major changes to our criminal justice happen. I dont know that thats going to happen realistically. This current iteration for two and a half years, weve been having it since the beginning of the United States of america. So much of the conversation has moved into a real conversation about systemic issues in the United States of america. It takes a long time to undo the history and there are long existing afteriskets. Katty in a sense does the political backdrop of deep polarization in the country make it almost harder now to fix these problems than it might have been in the past . It sometimes feel like whether its comes to gun control, policing, race, religion, we have a conversation of deaf people doing on in the country. Reporter sure, i do think it can be hard to determine how much more hole raised we are. In polarized we are. Certainly not more polarized in race than in the 1960s. Katty many so than in the 1990s . Rodney king and o. J. Simpson might argue no, were not. Katty to what extent are some modifications in policing tabblingt i said, whether its dashcam rass, pocket recording cameras helpful . Its very difficult to slate policing are. There things we could do in the area of policing that might help . Reporter certainly. First, theres a large conversation about body cameras. Some federal legislation has been proposed. Many states have passed body camera legislation. So we could possibly capture more of these incidents. More of these incidents being on video will only show more of the incidents 209 United States of america. The idea that having a camera is a disincentive has not been borne out. The other thing thats talked about is the escalation and the changing of policy. Should police be going out of their way to avoid killing people or at the moment they become scared should should they will kill someone . Katty thank you so much for joining me. Still to come, photos from mexico and beyond. A photographer speaks about the images which have caught her eye. Renewed fighting has broken out in south sudan between rival forces loyal to the president and Vice President. A reporter in the capital of jubea told the bbc that gunfire and loud explosions could be heard all over the city ask more than 200 have been ort reported dead since friday. Reporter explosions, gunfire and shellings heard in juba. President salva kiir fought against the former rebel leader and former Vice President riek machar. The u. S. And u. N. Have condemned the attacks. Chinese peacekeepers have taken several casualties as people in the capital came under fire, prompting this message from the Security Council. The Security Council members urge an immediate end to the fighting by all concerned and demand that president kiir and the first Vice President machar do the utmost to control their respective forces. Reporter questions have been raised over how much control the two leaders have over the military. The violence erupted on friday when their bodyguards clashed outside while the president and Vice President held a meeting in the state house. But the city remains tense. I call on all our citizens not to panic but to go back to their homes, those who have vacated, so that they stay there. The situation is normal and under full control. Reporter but the streets and the sky remain too dangerous for now. E can only hope that renewed fforts by their leaders will bare hope, soon. Bear hope, soon. Katty shes concerned one of the most important latin photographers in the past century. Graziellas photos are shaped by her strong culture and experiences. Recently she made a rare appearance here in america, where the bbc caught up with her. I always say that my camera is the pretext for understanding life and when im behind the camera, what i see ask and what surprises me is what i hotograph. My first photograph work was in my country, thanks to my teacher bravo and i could do Alvarez Bravo for me wasnt just a teacher of photographer, he was a teacher in my life. He taught me how to appreciate music and literature and showed me how everything around us can influence us and we must try to read the great authors and listen to the music of the great exposers. So really he was a teacher of life and thanks to him i became photographer. These photographs that are here came when i began photographing the botanic gardens. You can see how some of the gardeners take care of them with planks and cabe lings. Others are maintained in kyoto or in rome, the plants covered n cloth that look to me like exec constitutioners. Im very happy being a photographer. I love it. In reality i have to express how i see the world in two ways without a camera and with a camera. When im with my camera, i see reality through the lens of objectivity. But its also necessary to see reality without the camera. But for me, i prefer to see reality through my camera. I photographed what interested me. I participated politically in Different Things but only a few of my works are political. My intention is to look at life as if it was part of poetry and try to do something poetic in what i do. I try. Katty extraordinary images. Shes still going strong at 74. Lucky for all of us.
