A member of the British Parliament is killed in broad daylight as she prepared to meet with constituents. Eyewitnesses say jo cox was shot and stabbed. Colleagues are remembering the mother of two as a devoted and passionate advocate for those she served. Weve lost a great star. She was an n. P. With huge compassion, a big heart. And people are going to be very, very sad at what has happened. And president obama travels to orlando to meet those caught up in the worst mass shooting in u. S. History and offer sympathy to the families who lost loved nes. Welcome to our viewers on Public Television in america and also around the globe. Tonight we start with the death of jo cox a member of the British Parliament who was killed today in the north of england. Eyewitnesses say the mother of two Young Children was shot and stabbed while out on the street in her constituency. A 52yearold man has been arrested but so far no motive has been established. The bbcs ed thomas is on the scene and starts our coverage. The place where jo cox was shot and stabbed to death. An m. P. Murdered in her own town. Now there are police, fear, and the unanswered question why. Turned aroupped to look. Turned around to look. What we know a woman was screaming then a guy bent over a woman with the legs sticking out and looked like a gun in his hand then proceeded to shoot again. This is an eyewitness. Hes not just telling what he saw. Disturbingly listen to what he heard. The words i heard him say, britain first is what he said when he was shouting. He shouted it at least twice. Jo cox was rushed to the leeds general infirmary. Police confirmed she had died despite efforts to save her life. Just before 1 00 today jo cox m. P. , was attacked in Market Street bristol. I am now very sad to report that she has died as a result of her injuries of my heart goes out to jo coxs husband, brendan, their two children, her family, and friends. The pain they must now be enduring is unimagineable. And our thoughts and prayers are with them at this terrible time. Within minutes of the attack this footage was filmed nearby. The bbc understands the man being arrested is called tommy mare. He is 52 and lives alone. All day Police Forensic teams searched his home. His neighbors are struggling to understand what happened. Did you see him this morning . Yes, yes. Was he okay . Did he appear calm . Yes. Just straight like he does. A Friendly Neighbor . A man of few words. Jo cox had only been m. P. For her offer a year but reputation was growing. Accessible. Always willing to listen. What did she mean to you . She was a people person. She wasnt for money or power. She was a real her reputation was woman. Tonight this tribute from jo coxs husband. He said she would have wanted two things above all else to happen now. One, that our precious children are bathed in love. And, two, that we all unite to fight against the hatred that killed her. A life so cruelly taken. Ed thomas, bbc news. Jo cox had been a member of parliament for just over a year but already established a reputation for plain speaking on a range of issues including the plight of civilians in the syrian conflict. She had visited some of the worlds most dangerous places. Our Political Editor looks back at her life. Then ttering, stuttering, still. Lowered to mark a loss. Her husband, brendan ks posted this picture and said shed want their children to be bathed in love and that we all unite to fight against the hatred that killed her. Jo cox only arrived in westminster last year. Ive decided it is very humbling. An amazing building. Im not going to let it intimidate me. Bright, excited about the trust bestowed on her. No one who knew her could forget her. Now so many others will remember, too. Jo was a wonderful, wonderful woman. Parliamentarian, mother, wife. Her life has been taken. Woman and active were all poorer for this. She loved life and had a wonderful life and would want us to celebrate her life now. This is the way to start the day, isnt it . After years with working with refugees, she was unafraid of adventure. It was a cheeky kind of banana. She lived with her family on a boat on the thames. Brave in motive. Here to speak for her home area and for those with no voice. We celebrate our diversity but the thing that surprises me time and again as i travel around the constituency is we are far more united and have far more in common than that which divides us. Candles in Parliament Square tonight to remember a politician with a spark. Labors leader, members of her political family, coming together. She was an exemplary m. P. , real servant of democracy in every way one could want or imagine. Whats happened is beyond appalling. Were here tonight in silent memory. In just a year as m. P. She made a big impression. Weve lost a great star. She was m. P. , great campaigning m. P. With huge compassion with a big heart and people are going to be very, very sad at what has happened. Dreadful, dreadful news. She brought her determination as a campaigner from the field to westminster. Arguing to help syrian refugees. Achieving what some m. P. s never do. Credited by the chancellor tonight. Jo thought to help the refugees from the syrian civil war. And she gave a voice to those whose cry for help she felt was not being heard. It changed attitudes and i know it contributed to a change in policy. She will never know how many lives she helped transform. Whats happened is still too shocking to understand. Jo cox aim was simple. Something easy to say but complex to complete. To make a difference. He asked time ago, him about the mood up there tonight. Disbelief of course. The grief is just beginning. Theres been a vigil in the local Parish Church which by all accounts was packed with people and people couldnt get through the doors. Ive had a number of conversations and several people have said that i just dont know exactly how i feel about this yet. I cant believe this has happened. I cant believe this has happened to a woman so good natured, so committed to all in society not just those who vote for her and i cant believe its happened in a small town like this where crime is negative religionible let alone worrying about someone being brutally murdered, shot, and stabbed in the street. There are also broader issues for how people feel about their democracy. Were in the middle of a Ferocious Campaign over the you u. K. s membership in the European Union. I began today listening to the latest efforts of both campaigns. Jo cox died doing something well away from the cameras, no press conferences, no photo ops, no appearances in the house of commons. She was simply going to the local library to meet constituents to hear about their concerns and discuss with them how she could act on them. And tonight there is a hashtag trending in the u. K. Its thank your m. P. The death of this one by all accounts committed and strong woman has prompted everyone in the u. K. Tongue well perhaps were not appreciating the honest and the true and the passionate work politicians do on all of our behalfs. Ive never seen an outpouring toward politicians like this before backup then we havent seen ive never seen this before but we havent seen Something Like this in the u. K. Before. And of course the campaigning in that bitter Election Campaign over britains status in the European Union has been suspended because of this. Its as if someone turned a switch, katty. This morning the pace of this campaign was extraordinary. It was almost like we were in the last round of a heavyweight boxing bout where each contestant was throwing as many punches as they possibly could in the hope of delivering a knockout blow ahead of the vote next thursday. Then suddenly we heard there had been this awful attack and then several hours later we got the news wed all been dreading, that jo cox had died. Both campaigns have suspended all activities. The only thing british politicians are talking about is jo cox. That cant continue. This vote will go ahead next thursday but for the moment the focus is on her husband and her two little children. The referendum can wait for another day. Thank you very much for joining us from yorkshire. Well, from yorkshire to florida now its been five days since the horrific attack in orlando, which claimed 49 lives. Today president obama visited the community to offer his support and comfort people who had lost loved ones. The bbc has been on the scene all week and again tonight. What did the president have to say to the people of orlando . Well, it was an emotional day here. The president mixing with survivors but also with family members of the 49 victim. He was accompanied by the Vice President , joe biden. They went to place flowers at a makeshift memorial thats popped up in downtown orlando about two miles from where we are standing near the site of the attack, the popular gay night club. President obama took the opportunity not just to bring words of comfort but also he spoke out about home grown terrorism, saying that two of the recent events in america have been carried out by home grown terrorists. This was something that needed to be addressed. He also called for more action on gun control saying that without it, there was a risk that you could see more massacres like this again. There are too many more somber days this city will have to get through. The first of those killed in the attack here has now been laid to rest. Kimberly morris worked as a bouncer at the pulse night club. She had only recently moved to florida to help take care of her mother and grandmother. All stories of each one of the 49 victims of the attack have now been widely written about and for each family, burying their dead in the coming days, there has been a huge outpouring of support from people moved by the tragedy across america. President obamas been visiting orlando to show his support. In private hes met some of those affected by the horrific attack. Details of which are still emerging. As has been true too many times before, i held and hugged grieving family members and parents and they asked why does this keep happening . And they pleaded that we do more to stop the carnage. Distressing new mobile phone footage has come to life. It was taken from inside the Club Bathroom as people huddled in the stores for hours, trying to keep the wounded alive. And the killer, omar mateen was filmed for a documentary four years ago working as a security guard. Even then he was described by some colleagues as being a man filled with rage. All about the money right . All about the money. So i ask you all this question. In response to the attack democrat chris murphy addressed the senate on gun control. And ask yourself, what can you do to make sure that orlando or sandy hook never, ever happens again . He and other Democratic Senators talked for nearly 15 hours until it appears republicans agreed to hold votes on new measures. While such steps come too late for those who suffered here, many have expressed hope that at least something good comes out of their misery. Bbc news, orlando, florida. Apparently the killer omar mateen also posted to facebook during the attack. At one point referencing u. S. Air strikes against isis. This has raised the debate one more time about americas response to terrorism. Thanks very much. As you see this event in orlando has also sparked a new fight here over gun control. Particularly the issue of whether people who have been investigated by the f. B. I. For possible association with terrorism should be able to buy guns. I spoke about this a short time ago with democratic congressman adam schiff. Congressman, i think to a lot of people watching this around the world it might seem extraordinary that the u. S. Is even debating the idea that people who have been on terrorists no fly lists should possibly be able to have access to weapons in the country. Is it something you think will change now . I certainly hope it changes. Its inexplicable to the majority of americans, too, why on earth if someone is too dangerous to fly, if we think that person could kill so Many Americans on a plane would we allow them to possess an assault weapon or any other weapon for that matter. I hope that this horrible tragedy will bring about a change in the congress, but then to be honest with you i thought we wouldnt need anything more than the savage shooting at new town when so many young lives were lost to motivate the congress. But we are going to fight as hard as it takes and as long as it takes until we can get common sense gun measures passed in the congress. I think those of us who have watched too many Mass Shootings in america including the slaughter of 20 children at Sandy Hook Elementary School feel slightly cynical about the prospect of getting any meaningful gun reform in america. But you think with your letter to the president now there is some chance. I do think there is a chance. And, look. This is an appalling abdication of responsibility by the congress. It just shows what a stranglehold traditionally the n. R. A. Has had over this body. But i am hoping that comes to an end. Im hoping we can show that were capable of action and i think once we do, once we can achieve some responsible gun safety measures, that will allow us to move forward with more far reaching proposals like that to ban assault weapons. I dont see why anyone needs to have an assault weapon. Theyre not used for selfprotection, not used for hunting. They are used when you want to kill a lot of people in a short period of time and used in warfare. Is no reason to have them for civilian use whatsoever. As you know, the f. B. I. s argument in this case in the orlando case is that omar mateens investigation was closed. He was no longer under any kind of f. B. I. Surveillance. Would that need to change legally . Does something need to change in the structure of gun laws . Well, if we want to ban people who are on the no fly list from getting weapons, yes. That would require a statutory change. If on the other hand we want to make sure that even people for whom the file is temporarily closed, who were the subject of a terrorism investigation, at least send a red flag to the f. B. I. When they go to acquire a weapon of the kind of killing power this one has, that is something i think can be done probably administratively. Even in the absence of legislation. But something we ought to be prepared to do whether its administrative or by a bill in congress. Congressman, im sure youve heard the news from britain of the death of jo cox a member of parliament. Shes obviously not an american elected official but as an elected official yourself here i wondered what your reaction was. Well, you know, my sympathies go out to my colleagues in britain. Its a terrible loss. Every year i have a British Parliamentarian spend a few days with me. In fact, emailed one of my british colleagues to express my condolences. So i lost, you know, well i came close to losing a colleague and lost many along with her at a congresswoman on your conner when gabby gibts was shot. Thankfully she survived but many others in the shooting prished and we can only relate too well when one of the family is killed that way. Congressman, thank you very much for joining me. Adam schiff there. Thank you. Youre watching bbc world news america. Still to come on this program, catching a wave in india. It may not be the first place you would think to surf but one american is about to change all hat. The Egyptian Team investigating last months Airline Crash in the mediterranean say that they have recovered the planes cockpit voice recorder after a complicated salvage operation. The search team said the instrument has been damaged but its memory unit is intact. Signals from one of the flight recorders have been picked up by french naval vessel two weeks ago. The airbus 320 disappeared on its way from paris to cairo with 66 people onboard. Our cairo correspondent says the discovery as big development. Now the black box has been retrieved and we understand it will be transferred from the search vessel to the coastal city of alexandria where it will be picked up by members of the investigation committee. Then they will start working on analyzing the data stored on the black box. But we dont know how long this process will take. We dont know either whether the black box will be at some point transferred outside egypt for further analysis by more sophisticated equipment. What we do know is that there is now a much better clue and they will try as fast as they can to find what exactly happened that caused this plane to crash. Last night another search vessel that has been working in the mediterranean over the past few days managed to spot some of the wreckage and even got some images from the wreckage. Now the search teams are working on drawing a map to specify the exact locations of the part spotted. We dont know yet when they will be able to retrieve more parts of the wreckage. So far what has been retrieved by the search teams are only small parts of debris and some human body parts. D. N. A. Tests have been carried out and of course more information will be coming out from the investigation after the lack box has been found today. Lets catch up on other news now from around the world today. While the country has recently held its largest internationally ecognized surfing competition, american jack headner is one of the driving forces behind the sports growth in india and tells the bbc why he thinks he has found the perfect spot to catch a wave. My name is jack and im from jacksonville beach, florida. Here in india they call me the surfing swami. This is a big weekend here in india. Were having the first india open of surfing. We have just under a hundred kids from around the country. Im from dubai and im here to catch a wave. Firing its a genuine up. I caught like one wave and smashed on another but i made it to the finals. No one can believe it. The fact is amy has 7,000 kilometers of untouched beaches and along those beaches are some amazing surf. There is just nobody here to claim it. So its the next frontier. The water is not crowded. When i surf back home on a good day you have 40 or 50 people in the water. The break is only like from here to there. Here we have like 10 people. We dont think surfing will create over development of the beaches mainly because india is not a beach going culture. Were just looking for a fraction of 1 of the 200 Million People and that will be enough to sustain surfing as an industry and lifestyle for a lot of people. There is plenty of room here. Plenty of room. How exciting is this . Are you kidding me . Most people, their retirement means sitting around a pool. Im in the drivers seat of a whole Sports Movement here in india. Or me its super exciting. Surfing lifestyle in india. Very tempting. That brings this program to a close. Much more on the days news on my website. Thanks so much for watching.
