Welcome to our viewers on Public Television in america and around the globe. Iraqi forces and shia millis is she and militias are on the defense. It is the biggest push against the militants who of overruns large parts of the country. A victory would the strategically and symbolically important. Reports. Nik nowhere is the fighting more intense than here. It is where Iraqi Government forces have launched their biggest offensive against the militants calling themselves the Islamic State. The iraqi forces and shia militiamen are advancing on the center of the city after retaking a large part of northwestern parts of the city. They have been met with joyous celebrations by local people who believe their city is on the verge of liberation. I am very happy, said this beaming child, that the you came in to rid us of the militants. The hometown of Saddam Hussein is one of the largest cities held by isis and is final. It will give iraqi forces a supply link in the battle for moz oh, the second city and i asked and issa stronghold. And isis stronghold. All of the iraqi flags, the Iranian Military has been heavily involved, they be even overseeing it. Speaking in washington, americas highest ranking official welcomed their involvement, albeit with a caveat. The support for the Iraqi Security forces is a positive thing in military terms against isil. We are all concerned about what happens after the drums stopped beating and isil is defeated. And whether the government of iraq will remain on a path for inclusive government for all of the various groups. We are very concerned about that. The battle is no means over. The iraqi forces seem to be on the verge of their most significant victory of the conflict. Laura for more on the battle, im joined by a retired general who once headed the training of iraqi forces. You may have trained these very forces. Are you encouraged by their progress . I think the combined forces, the shia and sunni militias with the Iraqi Security forces are doing as well as i expected. There will be a lot of learning on their part. The battle will be very difficult. It is not quite complete yet. They will learn things that will be applied to most to mosel. Chairman dempsey had it right. What the concern is is what happens after the battle. Will there be death squads, secretary and activities, ethnic cleansing, or a relatively inclusive governments. If it is the latter it will bode well for the future. If it is the former, it will have big problems. Laura if they can get the city can they hold it while they could ready for the battle for mosel . This is what they are learning. This is what the iraqis have to learn. How to maintain momentum on the counteroffensive without losing gains from previous battles. Laura the americans are not involved yet, but they will be in the battle for mosel. . Who knows if it will be next or if the iraqis will do something in the euphrates valley to make sure isis stays off balance. Laura will they stay off balance . How important is it to keep going . The tempo of the counter offensive is important. It doesnt have to be unrelenting, but it has to be at a pace that isis cannot recover and reestablish defensive positions. Laura what about the Islamic State in syria and libya . General dempsey had it right. The main effort is a rock. The supporting effort is in syria. We can do something in syria but we cannot do everything until the campaign in iraq is over. The key is to make sure the Iraqi Campaign goes well. Laura as you watch from afar after being closely involved, after so many years of the u. S. Going wrong in iraq, do you fear do you feel a corner is being turned . They went wrong in 2003, in 2009 and 2010, they went wrong. Maybe they are going back in the direction now. Laura general james to general james, thank you for joining us. A report by a Global Coalition of eight agency criticizes a counsel for letting down civilians and calls on the government to boost have military and to boost humanitarian responses. 8 Million People have been displaced. Good news does not come out of syria often. In the last few days the you win read a delivery to a Palestinian Refugee in damascus that has been smashed by the war. What makes it more cool is that the end more cruel is that the end is not insight. The statistics on serious dissent into hell is shocking. What is more shocking is that politicians have given up on the syrian crisis. It is remarkable that after two successive counsel evolutions calling for humanitarian aid for the syrian citizens, practically no improvement has been achieved in the flow of aid. What is worse, because of the continued fighting, the situation in the country has gotten worse. Last year was the worst so far for civilians. The worlds most powerful countries have not been able to make their own u. N. Resolutions work. That wouldve taken the kind of intervention that has been ruled out from the beginning. When i met the rebels from the freesyria army from the winter in the war in damascus, they wanted the west to help them overthrow the regime. He was a syrian officer who joined the fsa who hopes for more western backing. The Syrian People are suffering. Whether they are living in the regime or in isis, they are suffering from the bare bones of the regime and the humanity that isis is putting on them. Both areas do not have choices. Syrians are waiting for someone to give them their lives again. Four years on the revolutionaries has been eclipsed by armed rebels. There are fighting groups ranging from moderates to isis and al qaeda. The American Allies have intervened by bombing the jihadists. The where is going on thinks to military aid. It is hard to stop the war because it its complexity. It has become a proxy war between iran and to saudi arabia and fused with conflict in iraq. President assad seems more secure than it any time since the war started. He believes the rise of the Islamic State means western powers have effectively put a stake in his survival. Satellite pictures track the lights going out in syria the last four years. No one can say when they will come on again. Jeremy bowen, bbc news. One of the greatest talents come from cuba. Until now they had to defect to join the team. As relations between the countries change, that could change. Look at what that could mean for the players and the game. Cuba is the country to watch. Current champions of the caribbean series cuba plays the best baseball in the world and has an impressive record in producing prodigious talent. For years that talent has been confined to the communist island by combination of the u. S. Embargo and cuba straight immigration rules.
