Fair in the bay area that comes here every other year. Black History Month is first. It was proposed by jean wilson. Back then it was [null] history week. They chose the second week in february because of the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and fatfree and Frederick Douglass. It became a month in 1976. We just celebrated doctor kings birthday. We have been celebrating his birthday since 1983 as a holiday. Two important times in january and february. My guest is a longtime friend and colleague. We went to seminary together and he has always been part of the struggle for justice and truth and i am glad that he is still around. Its great to have you. It is great to be here and congratulations to you with 16 years. I have always enjoyed being with you in on this program. Host you have been at the church for the people for 15 years. 50 years. You establish that back in 19 established that back in 1944. Yes. One of the most important things about doctor Martin Luther king jr. , and one of the reasons that i miss him so much, and i do, is that he had a vision. We have not had a leader with a vision that Martin Luther king had since his assassination. We have had different policies or even in terms of the international world, but to have a person that has projected where we go from here and a person who projects into the community and how that would look. For example, he projected that the people would have a national guaranteed income if they were not able to work or whatever. And also housing for people. These are ideas that we have not moved on. As a minister, he was still quite astute at dealing with the political realities. He had talked with others about eliminating poverty in the country. If the rich would agree to become richer, but at a slower pace. Host that was revolutionary back then. King also did a critique of our society saying the beloved community of which he spoke could not be obtained under the presently capitalistic society. He spoke seriously about a redistribution of wealth and raise the question, why should have why should people have to pay water bills . He actually said that she would love to use the nicodemus scripture in the bible when nicodemus said, what must i do . He said, you must be born again. King interpreted that in that you must restructure your life. The United States must restructure. Host how did you know that i would use that this sunday . You have been reading my mind. He said we should always be dissatisfied. We must be dissatisfied until the United States lives up to its possibilities so that all people are included and that all people can be unafraid. Host those are pretty radical statements. They are radical statements. Host people remember that he had a dream, but people dont remember that. Thats why years ago we establish the Martin Luther king church to bring understanding. Host i appreciate that. We tried to help with understanding. The other thing was that he was committed until death. Host we will come back to that. We have been doctor reverend blake. This is also the celebration of doctor Martin Luther king juniors life. Host welcome back to mosaic. We have been talking to doctor reverend blake. We have been talking about dr. Martin luther king, jr. Is there anything you would like to add . Doctor king was mentored by doctor Howard Thurman who was a cofounder of our church which was the nations first interracial congregation. He and his wife were the first to meet with Mahatma Gandhi in 1956. So, you have the influence of gandhi and doctor thurman and doctor gang in terms of not understanding violence. Host doctor thurman influenced so many people. Many people saw him as contemplative and a mystic. How would you interpret that. I think he would define himself as a seeker. He was always seeking to understand life deeply. He is always seeking to find out more about the Common Ground with other people. He was a mystic who was concerned about the social realities. Understanding mysticism was that there is a one this becomes the comes with the unity of life. Not only with yourself, but with all of creation. You want to see that in the overall society. If there are institutions that stand against the unity, then you have a responsibility to work to change those institutions so that unity will be obtained in the society. It was not a mysticism that you are compliant thats contemplating yourself, but this was unity that made you dedicate your life to seeing the unity of all things and life in general. Host that seem to be doctor kings philosophy and of course Howard Thurman and that is huge in our history. What else would you say about black History Month . In 1922, they established black history. He spoke with people that internalized racism at a profound level and he was disturbed because the history books did not include African American history or african history and he thought it was important for people to have a better understanding of themselves. This was proclaimed in 1926 during the height of the harlem renaissance where you had black poets and black art and all of these kinds of people and the black experience. Later, it was said that the racism was so internalized that if there was not a backdoor, they would create one. This is the impact. This also comes after the race the race riots. From his point of view, it was necessary for people to get an understanding of who they were, their history and their accomplishments in order to move forward as a people. It was a precursor to the black is Beautiful Movement when people went back to africa and reclaim their roots in a positive way. Host this is profound, why do so many meese miss it. That is africanamericans and the larger culture . I think because it is a way to go mainstream and you miss much of your own heritage. The middle class idea is to make it on your own and therefore you disconnect with your larger community. Host the in the next two segments, we will deal with books. There is a book called stamps from the beginning. Have you heard of that . No. Host the author deals with a lot of what you talked about. He says it is segregation and assimilates him assimilation and the antiblack movement with Frederick Douglass and all of that. We start at the beginning with inequity and justice which comes from davis. Then trying to accommodate. Not only jefferson davis, but also the religious institutions and the educational institutions and by the mores of the society with inferiority. So, it is not a way to understand that people would incorporate and internalize that. That is why it is so important to have a radical interpretation of the history. The racism and inferiority was enforced at every level in our society. Host and you have done that today with a history you have given us. Thank you. Host when are your services . 11 00 sunday morning and on the second sunday of each month, we have a social justice film. Host the location . 2041 larkin street in San Francisco. Its at the market and broadway. Host if i was not a pastor, i would be at your church. Doctor, i appreciate your word and your struggle. Thank you. Host we have been with reverend doctor blake. Thank you for joining us. In the next segment, we will have books, books and more books. Please join us. , welcome back to mosiac. I love books and i read a few weeks ago and i heard about a young woman, in fact a young girl, who has read 1000 books. She is 18. As much as she has read, she has probably not read some of the rare books we have today. We have michael akin berg and laura swan with us today. There is a book fair february 10 and 12. Welcome mike and laura. Good morning. Host thank you for the books you have brought and you will tell us about the fair. Lets look at some of the books i just mentioned. The book fair is for books that are unusual that you dont see another context. In other contexts. We have the hymnal that was printed in hawaii in 1834. It was designed for missionary activities, but of course they not only had to produce the text in hawaii and, but they had to hawaiian and they had to do this all on a hand press. This is a rare hawaiian hymnal from 1834. Its the first one. Another example begins in europe in the 1450s in germany. I brought along a 1515 italian imprint that is totally in greek. This is the first printing in rome using the greek font. Basically by a poet. What is important about this that it is the first to be seen and it also has a lot of commentary. There were scholars. You will see manufactured manuscript books and maps and early imprints and you will see modern things too. Host im amazed at how they are preserved. These books were done on very nice paper and they tend to last as long as they are treated well. This particular binding is good , like this on the hawaiian book. But, i did bring a more modern book from 1963. It is bob hopes, i owe russia. It is interesting because it has a dedication to a priest in Southern California and it is signed by bob hope on the flyleaf itself. In addition to that, there are 24 pages of typescript carbon copies of jokes that he did when he did routines in Southern California. Most went to at the Benevolent Society and the police. They were bad jokes from the 60s like, i dont hope thats i hope you dont do my cadillac which is parked illegally outside. Host he could get away with it. He could. They brought him in for every conceivable fundraiser in Southern California. This is at a time when his movies were making big splash a big splash and he was going off to shows in vietnam and elsewhere for troop support. Host in the book fair will have some of these books . It is february 12th at the city center. It has dealers coming in from a lot of the american states and european and other countries. Australia will be represented. Host 150 you say . 175. There will be a lot of interesting dealers with all manners of materials. There will be posters from the Free Speech Movement and all sorts of great items. Host that seems difficult in San Francisco, but oakland seems to be more. Oakland is acceptable. There is a bart stop and the city of oakland has built bent over backwards basically welcoming us. We originally did it in San Francisco at the old concourse. Host before we go to the next segment with laura, tell us where you are located. I have been involved in the Antiquarian Book moment for a few years and i serve the community. Host thank you for being with us michael. Please join us with laura in the next segment for a look at these rare books. Host welcome back. The outside is fairly plain, but the inside is what i have talking about. They were using cheap paper and ink and bindings. At the end of the 19th century, william morris, who may have heard of, he started the arts and crafts movement. He said, we need to make looks beautiful. He started a press and his chaucer is considered the most beautiful book ever created. Let me get this open so you can see it. Host wow. What he went for was almost a gothic look and heavily decorated. All the foliation and intertwining bidens in the leaf binds in the leaf. This was an affair was a very important book for morris to publish. Host who was ruskin . A wellknown writer. The movement continued to make beautiful books. He really started it. By about 1920, it was in full swing. Another plane book on the outside, but when we look on the inside, the golden cockrell press was printing books illustrated by famous illustrators. This one is by eric gill. Eric gill was known as being a man after of two minds. He was of deep religious persuasion. This is the passion of christ . This is the passion of christ and this entire book is written in latin. You will see let me turn to this wonderful illustration of the first of the crucifixion. It is very moving. Host it is. He was also known for ironic drawings. He was a man who up erotic drawings. He was a man who appreciated human flesh. So, the golden cockrell press started in the 20s and continues to the 40s or 50s. The movement to make beautiful books never stopped. My last example is from the old style press who started in the 1980s. And, this book, i just adore. You will see the illustrations are in color. Now, these are woodcut illustrations. In order for the artist to make this book, and by the way, this is one of only 26 books printed with the illustrations and color out of a total of it total addition of 200. They had to make a separate wood block to print each color. Host thats amazing. The same piece of paper goes through the press and is imprinted by the wood blocks one time for every color you see. I went through this book and i counted somewhere near 10 different colors. So, to make this book, every piece of paper went through the press. Host do i ask how much these books are . Priceless. I believe this book retails for about 750. Host thats not bad. I think i heard 12,000 on one of these books. My books are reasonable. Theyre all priceless and special in their own way and theyre all different in their own way. Host we have only a few seconds left. Tell us about the book fair, where it is and the name. Is the California International book fair and it will be on the 10th through 12 february. It will be at the Oakland Marriott city center. It has a bart stop at the door. It will run friday, saturday and sunday of that weekend and there will be vendors from all over the world. Host where is your bookstore . We are in el torito and i have been at that location for about 17 years. Ive been doing book fairs for about 30 years. Host excellent. Thank you mike and laura. I hope to make it to both of your stores, if i dont make it to the fair. I may just be browsing. We love browsers. Host this is ron swisher and you have been with us for mosaic. I hope you were inspired and enlightened today. Thank you. We will be back. upbeat music [voiceover] you are San Francisco. Weve been with you from the beginning.
