This is the the this is the cbs weekend news. Quijano good evening, im Elaine Quijano with a western edition of the broadcast. We begin with a horrific crash in the california desert. A tour bus and a tractor trailer collided this morning on interstate 10 near palm springs. The death toll has been climbing throughout the day. Mireya villarreal has the latest. Mireya . Reporter elaine, Highway Patrol officers responding to this accident say it is one of the worst they have ever responded to. We have confirmed 13 people were killed in the accident including the bus driver. 30 more were taken to local area hospitals. The video from this morning shows you just how bad this accident was. The the entire front half of the bus was lodged under the tractor trailer. There were 44 people on that bus when it hit. Emergency crews had a difficult time reaching some of the worst victims and a private tow company had to pry the tractor trailer off the tour bus to get to the most impacted areas. The the tour bus was on its way back to los angeles from the the red earth casino in imperial county, california. The the bus was operated by u. S. A. Holiday, an la based tour company. The california Highway Patrol confirms the bus was inspected in 2014, 2015 and april of this year and no major issues were indicated. The the chp investigators on scene are looking at speed and driver fatigue as possible factors in the the accident. No details about the the driver have been released at this time. Investigators on scene tell us it has been a difficult time for them trying to identify these victims because of the selfer rit and impact of this accident. With a little over two weeks until the the election, cbs news checked in with voters in florida and texas. Two of the biggest states on the electoral map. Our latest cbs Battleground Tracker shows clinton holds a three point lead in florida. In texas, a state that typically goes to the gop, trump is winning by the same margin. In the larger picture donald trump is underperforming with a lot of tbrowps that republicans traditionally do well with. White men, College Educated women, and as long as he does that, these, a lot of these states are going to be closer. Reporter trump is also doing poorly with female voters. Just yesterday an 11th woman accused trump of inappropriate behavior. When we entered the room he grabbed each of us tightly in a hug and kissed each one of us without asking permission. Our advantage is that donald trump is just going to continue to take the case directly to the people. Reporter trump has five rallies in florida this week before heading to North Carolina where clinton continues to spend a lot of time and money. She and First Lady Michelle Obama will campaign there together for the the first time on thursday. Elaine . Quijano thank you. North carolina is one of 30 states where early voting is under way. But in a state where 27 people were killed this month by floods from Hurricane Matthew, many flood victims are struggling to get to the polls or even think about voting. Jamie yuccas has the story. But towns like fairmont are still feeling the effects, alice mcnairs home is flooded out, full of mold and waterlogged floors. Im just doing the best i can to keep my head above the water. And praying that the lord will help me restore everything that i lost. Reporter mcnair and her family are now krammed into one home. But theyre some of the lucky ones. Close to a thousand people were still being housed in emergency shelters this week. Others are lining up for food, instead of lining up for early voting ballots in the toughly contested battleground state of North Carolina. More than 550 thousand registered voters live in the six North Carolina counties where almost a foot of rain washed out roads and bridges for weeks. Even some polling places were swept away. We all coming to vote . Reporter election workers are struggling to find places for people to vote. Absentee voting may not be the fix. A person needs a Mailing Address where the ballot can be sent.
