Concerns this morning for an american tourist detained in north korea. The north Korean State News Agency says the 24yearold man was arrested for trying to claim asylum in the reclusive country. If true this would be the second american currently held there. Mark albert is monitoring developments. Hes in our washington bureau. Mark, good morning. Good morning. North korea revealed the arrest while president obama was on the Korean Peninsula for meetings with the south korean president. Since the u. S. Has no diplomatic relations with north korea, the u. S. Is relying on others for help. Reporter north koreas media identified the american as 24yearold matthew todd miller. No hometown was given. The countrys Central News Agency said miller was detained for improper behavior as he was entering the country as a tourist april 10th. The North Koreans claim he tore up his tourist visa yelling that he wanted to stay. I want asylum in north korea, state media reported him as saying. I want north korea to be my shelter. State Department Spokeswoman jen psaki. Theres no greater welfare than the safety of u. S. Citizens. We dont have Additional Information to share at this time. Reporter miller would be the second american known to be detained in north korea. 45yearold kenneth bay, a koreanamerican missionary and father of three, has been held captive for nearly a year and a half. The North Koreans sentenced him to 15 years hard labor for an alleged Smear Campaign to bring down the government. We remain deeply concerned about his health. We continue to urge north korean authorities to grant mr. Bay special amnesty and Immediate Release on humanitarian grounds. I dont have any other specific updates on this. A new jerseybased travel company, yuri tours, says on its website that miller was on one of its tours and that quote, we are doing all we can to redissolve this matter in a speedy and favorable manner. Mark albert in washington thank you. President obama is in kuala lumpur malaysia, the third stop of his fourstop asian swing. It is the first visit of a u. S. President since lyndon johnson. Hes spent much time focusing on the tensions in ukraine and on the Nuclear Threat from north korea. Major garrett is traveling with the president. Reporter good morning. Top officials here continue to seek the release of a 24yearold american detained in north korea april 10th. The circumstances of that arrest remain unclear, and the state department is working through the swedish government to find out more details as the United States has no formal diplomatic relations with north korea. A military dictatorship president obama says poses a direct threat to the United States. President obama listened to south korean President Park said north korea could test a Nuclear Weapon at any moment. Mr. Obama said the norths Nuclear Program and pursuit of longrange Ballistic Missiles pose a threat here and at home. Some of the Missile Technology thats being developed, the Nuclear Weapons that are being developed in north korea, when matched up with a thoroughly irresponsible Foreign Policy and a provocative approach by the north korean regime poses a threat to the United States. Reporter mr. Obama said china, long an ally of north korea, is pulling back. Chinas beginning to recognize that north korea is not just a nuisance. This is a significant problem to their own security and weve encouraged them to exert greater influence over north korea because china has the most significant effect on north korean calculations. Reporter the other pressing concern for mr. Obama is ukraine. Talks with top european allies intensified. Financial penalties on russian figures backing military unrest in ukraine could come as early as monday. The decision to hit key sectors of russias economy like energy and banking remains on hold. The europeans and the United States have been consistent in calibrating sanctions that could provide a deterrent to the russians providing support to the ukrainians leaving open a path for resolving this problem diplomatically. Reporter but the president also rejected the notion he has other options in ukraine. We seem to have gotten into the habit of thinking that when there are hard Foreign Policy problems, that there may actually be a definitive answer. Typically those who offer that definitive answer come up with the use of force as the definitive answer. Reporter mr. Obama said as president and as a student of history hes skeptical of military force generally and particularly in ukraine. Even though white house officials concede economic sanctions have so far failed in ukraine and the threat of more may not save that fragile country. For cbs this morning saturday, major garrett, seoul, south korea. This weekend, Russian Troops are conducting exercises near the border with ukraine. Some fear its a prelude to an invasion. Holly williams is in donetsk, ukraine. Holly, good morning. Reporter good morning. The struggle between ukraines government and prorussian separatists has sparked the worst tensions between washington and moscow since the cold war. But much of the trouble in Eastern Ukraine is centered on just one town slaviansk, with a population of 100,000. Slaviansk has been under the control of masked prorussian militants for more than a week. Theyre russianspeaking ukrainians who say theyre discriminated against by their government and theyre demanding an independent state or at least more autonomy. Ukraines government claims the insurgency here has been incited by moscow and says these photos show russian agents at work including this man who they allege is a Russian Special forces officer. We believe we also spotted him in slaviansk last week though we cant be sure of his identity. On tuesday, Vice President joe biden visited ukraine in a very public show of support for the countrys leaders. Call on russia to stop supporting men hiding behind masks in unmarked uniforms sowing unrest in Eastern Ukraine. Reporter in slaviansk, we asked the towns new separatist mayor whether those allegations were true. Sir, Holly Williams cbs news. Can i ask you, are there russian operatives helping you here in slaviansk . No, he told us we only have our own people. Though he went on to say hes asked for help from friends that have come here from other countries. Russia denies its stirring up unrest in Eastern Ukraine, but its warned that if theres violence here, it could intervene militarily. If we are attacked, we would certainly respond. I dont see any other way but to respond in full accordance with international law. Reporter ukraines government seemed to ignore that threat. And on thursday launched a new offensive just north of slaviansk. But it was far from a decisive victory. A few hours later, we found the area back under the control of the separatists. Meanwhile, just over the border thousands of Russian Troops began a new round of military exercises, prompting ukraines Prime Minister to accuse russia of wanting to start world war iii in his country. In slaviansk, the separatists seem unworried by the interpret tensions fuelled in large part by their small town. They say theyll continue their insurgency until they get what they want. Holly williams in ukraine this morning, and senator claire mccaskill, democrat of missouri seeking to end assaults on college campuses. South korea has detained four more crew members from the ferry that sank earlier this month. 187 people were killed and 115 people are believed to be missing. After the april 16th accident off the coast of south korea. The new arrests will mean that all 15 people involved in navigating the ship are in custody. All are accused of negligence and of failing to help passengers. This is day 50 of the search for Malaysia Airlines flight 370, and there is still no sign of the missing plane. This morning with almost 100 of the target search area completed and no clues found, experts fear a wider hunt could take years. Joining us now is mark rosenkerr and former chairman of the National Transportation safety board. Mark, good morning. Good morning. We hoped wed be seeing you under different circumstances. They went all in on this submersible. Whats next . What they were looking at was a giant dart board, coming from inmarsat, radar being tras and finally with the pings. They went for the bullseye. Unfortunately there was nothing in the bullseye. But this is a very large target a very large device that theyre going to have to take a look at and then understand where it may well be next. This was the most promising lead, though mark. And if were not seeing anything here, where do you go next . Well they stay on this dart board. This dart board is very large, and it was created from all of this good calculations at least this is what they believe to be good calculations right now. What happens at this point in terms of how theyll continue searching . Does it continue under water . Do we go to the snare whats the next step . I think youre going to see at least this is what the leaders of this investigation have indicated that theyre going to kind of pull back on the aviation side. Theyre going to put all of their efforts into looking under water and trying to find this aircraft on the seabed. How do they do that mark . This has got to be a very long and tedious process. It is going to be a very long tedious, frustrating and obviously a very expensive process. Theyre going to need specialized equipment. This bluefin21 is good but its not the answer. Theyre going to need other things as well. I read somewhere that malaysia will have to now file a report on what they know. But im just curious, what could possibly be in this report . Theyve been so tightlipped. They have actually created this report and september it to ikao the International Civil Aviation Organization which really governs the search process through its annex 13. This report is basically factual. You will not find any analysis whatsoever in it. It will talk about the aircraft itself. It will talk about the facts as they know them but you will not have very many answers at all. At any point did the searchers step back from this process or take a break, mark or is this something youve got to stay with for a long period of time until you get some kind of break . There will be various times where it appears nothing is happening. There will be shifts of equipment, shifts of crews. If we take a look at what in fact, we saw through the air france examination, air 447, there was really, of the two years that it took to actually bring up the black boxes, there was only really six months of real search going on during that twoyear period. What about these family members . Some of them have staged sitin outside the embassy. Where are they left in all of this . Who will give them answers . They are looking for answers. They deserve answers. The government needs to give them the answers. But unfortunately, no one has answers right now. Mark you say that this bluefin21 is not enough equipment. Is there equipment out there that can do the job better . There are other pieces of equipment which will probably be brought in. The australian Prime Minister has made a commitment to stay with this Technical Expertise when they finally get something. Right now we are just absolutely stumped on where this aircraft can be. How will history remember this, this whole incident you think . Probably the longest, most expensive, most mysterious investigation of aviation ever. Mark thanks for being with us this morning. There was a deadly accident at california ice cream parlor. An suv plowed into a line of people waiting outside the store last night. One woman was killed. Six other people were injured. The canonization of saints began more than 1,000 years ago when pope john xv bestowed the title on a german bishop. Now two popes will join that list of the churchs most worthy individuals. A massive crowd of pilgrims is expected to witness the ceremonies set for tomorrow in vatican city. Allen pizzey is there for us this morning. Allen, good morning. Reporter good morning. The two new saints were proclaimed in what in church terms amounts to record time. The ceremony to formalize their status is going to take about three hours. Whether or not it should be happening at all depends very much on your point of view. The unprecedented canonization of two popes, john xxiii and john paul ii is expected to draw as many as a Million People. And for some thats not a surprise. Joaquin spent 22 years as Pope John Paul iis personal press secretary. As you got to know him did it ever cross your mind im working for a potential saint . No. My condition was i am working with a saint, not a potential saint. Reporter john xxiii is known as the good pope to the point where his life is considered the equivalent of one of the two miracles necessary for sainthood. He began the most sweeping reforms in modern church history. John paul ii was seen as being more conservative but continued what john xxiii began. It was Pope Franciss idea to canonize them both on the same day. What we see happening is france is recognizing the great significance of johns dream and johns hope for the church and the boldness and courage of john paul iis method of leading the church. Reporter but not everyone agrees on the saintliness of john paul ii under whose reign the Church Sex Abuse scandal broke. He had the knowledge, information, the opportunity and the authority to take action that would have protected children. Reporter but celebration overshadows condemnation here. Two musicals based on the life of john paul ii have been running to packed houses and standing ovations. Its not normally the way popes, saints are viewed but then whether you approve of them or not in their own way both were men who broke the mold. Anthony . Thats for sure. A new report the American Academy of pediatrics finds emergency room doctors prescribe codeine to children more than half million times a year. Thats despite National Guidelines that urge against giving the drug to kids. John, tell us about this report and why do you think this is happening in Emergency Rooms . Anthony, its so puzzling. These are clear guidelines. 1997 reiterated in 2006 and potentially fatal outcomes. Doesnt happen all that often, but it can happen. And yet people are still prescribing over a tenyear period the same amount of codeine for kids usually 3 to 17yearolds, when they come in with coughs and for pain control. So what are some of the alternatives parents should consider here . Well first of all, you should know what the side effects are in terms of the symptoms. If your kid is confused if your child has trouble breathing, change in mental status that says hey, maybe theres an overdose. But in addition there are alternatives. Theres a huge pressure of people coming to the emergency room. Your kids up all night. Ive had this. Give my kid something. I want some medicine. For pain you could use ibuprofen, acetaminophen, even hydrocodone. But for cough, sometimes less is more. I spoke to the fda this morning. They said for kids under 4, overthecounter medicines are not really recommended. There is something called dark honey for kids over the age of 1. I use honey on my little girls and it works. It gets them to sleep. It calms down their cough just enough. Also this week it is finally feeling like spring in much of the country, but that is bringing an extra dose of pollen. If youre among the 50 million americans with seasonal allergies, the long winter and Climate Change may be packing a one, two punch of misery. Holly, we keep hearing about Global Warming as it relates to allergies. How does it . Well its actually going to make our allergy seasons worse going forward. Essentially Global Warming extends allergy season. Spring tends to come earlier and fall tends to come later. And it also creates a longer growing season for plants. So usually we would see tree pollen in the spring grass pollen in the summer and then ragweed pollen in the fall. But because the climate is changing, many of those things are kind of overlapping. So in the spring we might have trees but also grass. And thats giving sort of a one, two punch to allergy sufferers. It seems counterintuitive when weve had such a long hard winter particularly here in the northeast. You would think it means a shorter allergy season. Actually it does. Our spring got started late so our spring allergy season will be shorter but unfortunately more intense because what should be blooming, the pollen that should be released over a onemonth period is now kind of dumping out all at once in just a few days or a week. So its not going to be an easy season for spring even though it will be shorter. How do we manage . The key is to really try and keep pollen outside of your home. Thats just so that youre not exposed to it as much 24 hours a day. So you would want to change your clothes right when you come in. Try and shower off pollen if you can. And if you take allergy medicine, take it before your symptoms kick in. Allergy medicines a little better at preventing bad symptoms than at treating them once you have them. Good advice. There was good news this week for coffee lovers. A study from the Harvard School of Public Health says people who increase their consumption of coffee might decrease their risk of type ii diabetes. Researchers looked at data on more than 125,000 people over a fouryear period. Those who increased their coffee drinking by an average of 1 1 2 cups a day had an 11 lower risk of diabetes compared to people who made no changes in their intake. The findings did not hold true for tea or for decaf. You have to switch over to coffee like me now. Not good news for me. Millions of americans take stat statins to control their cholesterol. There was a surprising report. That is surprising. Not surprising to a lot of us. Weve been worried about this. The idea of statins giving people a false sense of security. They followed statin users, s. Caloric and fat intake. Their weight went up a little bit. But the people on them their caloric intake went up 10 and bmi went up over a point. And that is very worrisome for the idea of somebody sitting there with their bag of potato chips, belly out to here not exercising and feeling safe because their bad cholesterol is low and theyre an accident waiting to happen. Your idea of statins would be more aware of diet issues involved, so why are they doing this . Ive seen some of the same things that john pointed out. I kind of understand how that works. And also as doctors, we do a little bit less diet and exercise counseling i think with people who have wellcontrolled cholesterol. We look at your numbers. Youre doing great. So we might not spend as much time reminding everyone to eat well and do what they need for their health. But theres a big difference between having a good cholesterol number and being healthy overall. We all have to keep that in mind. Finally this week a music sensation celebrated a medical milestone. The hiphop duo Macklemore Ryan lewis rocketed to number one without a record label. But ryan lewis has a personal story you probably dont know and he shared it with ben tracy. Im gonna pop some tags only got 20 in my pocket reporter you may know ryan lewis as the fur coatwearing delorian driving half of the rap duo known as Macklemore Ryan lewis. Well fight till its over so we put our hands up like the ceiling cant hold us reporter their debut independent album the heist reached number one and earned them four grammys. Despite that there is something lewis has not talked much about until now. When you got famous did you assume at some point youd have to talk more publicly about this . I mean i have an aids ribbon tattooed on my arm. If youre going to do that youve got to be willing to share. Reporter hes talking about his mother julie lewis. She is hiv positive. She lived with the disease for 30 years. I had been married a couple years, and we were expecting our first child. She was born. It was a difficult delivery. And i lost a lot of blood. And so i ended up needing a blood transfusion. Reporter it was 1984. Donated blood was not routinely checked for hiv. 6 1 2 years later, julie found out her donor was hiv positive. She now had three children including ryan. My immediate concern was, is our whole family infected . Because the minute i found out i was hiv positive, the next step was that every Single Person in our family needed to have an hiv test. And we had to wait three or four days for those tests to come back. And i will tell you, that was the longest three or four days i will have ever lived. Reporter despite having a 25 chance of being hiv positive, none of her children were infected. Neither was her husband. But julie was told she would be dead within three to five years. She was 32 years old. But you know whats amazing, my mom never died. She lived. Reporter in an online video launched tuesday ryan lewis announced his familys way of celebrating his moms 30year survival. We want to build medical Centers Worldwide that will stand strong for at least 30 years. Its called the 30 30 project. Reporter the First Health Center will be built in a village in malawi where more than one in ten adults has hiv or aids. They currently have to walk two hours down a mountain to the nearest medical care. If that Community Stays healthy, that means that the parents stay healthy. And if the parents stay healthy, they can earn a living. And if theyre earning a living then those children can go to school. Reporter ryan and his music partner, ben hagerty, thats macklemores real name are the first donors. They are hoping to inspire others to give and fund 30 health Centers Worldwide, serving 600,000 people. We want to see this idea put into action. Its Pretty Amazing for me that my family could have the story and my mom could go through all this and it could come to this point, that i could use sort of the platform thats been provided to invest my time and energy into something that is just really positive. That is a perfect use of fame. Yes it really is. Its such a celebrityobsessed culture, to see how you can translate that into something so meaningful thats what its all about. Yeah. And a great way to respond to something that happened to your family and do something really good as a result. Dr. John lapook dr. Holly phillips, thank you both. Up next, america in the future. The hearts diameter is just greater than a strand of human hair. Fascinating as those are, most of us are more concerned with the larger world we deal with every day. According to author paul taylor for americans that world is being radically transformed right now. His new book is entitled the next america. Paul taylor, good morning. Good morning. Nice to be here. I dont think most people will be surprised that you say the next generation is older whiter, but what is surprising about the book is how all of that affects the american landscape. Yeah the United States is going through two dramatic demographic transformations at the same time. Either one of them would be the defining story of our era, but the fact that theyre both happening simultaneously is really creating potential generational stresses. Were on path to becoming a majority nonwhite country, in the middle of last century, we were 85 white. By the middle of this century, well be 43 white. This is being driven mainly by the modern immigration wave. Unlike previous immigration waves, in this case asians and hispanics changing our racial tapestry. And at the same time a lot of us are going gray. The famous baby boom generation made a lot of noise when we were young. Its now 10,000 baby boomers will turn 65 today. Another 10,000 tomorrow. This will happen every single day until 2030. And at that point, we have a kind of more beneficiaries than taxpayers in terms of our big social insurance programs. And the math doesnt work. And as a society, well have to work all that out. At the same time, Life Expectancy which in 1960 was 70 years old. By 2011 you say its 79 years old. Its already 79 years old and by the middle of this century it will be 84. And on from there. So again youve got to start to do the math. So this has economic repercussions and it also has political repercussions, yes . Yes. The gap in the way young and old vote is bigger than at any time recorded. The young tend to be many nonwhite, they tend to be liberal and democratic. Old, the other way. Older, conservative. They dont like government but hand off Social Security and medicare. They work very well for that. The book also talks about millennials and their lifestyle choices. They dont want to get married, buy a house or get a car. How does that affect the rest of us . All of those things are true except i wouldnt use the word want. They arent getting married, they arent buying houses and they arent buying cars. And the reason is they dont have the money. And this is the first generation in modern history perhaps in our history that is starting out in life in worse economic circumstances than their parents generation. And the way you stack this up, then, is you bakesically see a battle looming between what Millennials Want and what baby boomers want. I see a potential battle. What the book also points out there isnt you know a generation war needs combatants. We have data to suggest that young and old in this country actually get along very well. One of the reasons is that the young are having trouble Getting Started in life and theyre still living with mom and dad or theyve boomeranged back home. Theres not a lot of complicate in those households that we can measure. When the boomers came of age back in the 60s, we had kind of a whistle generation where our parents sort of screwed everything up and we were here to make it better. These kids dont feel that way about their parents. And lets hope thats a good basis, those good vibrations will help us solve some of the entitlement issues. Maybe its because like a lot of families you know i grew up on the ragged edge of the middle class. My dad worked hard had a heart attack when i was 12. It kind of turned our family upside down financially. He ended up as a maintenance man. My mom worked a minimumwage job at sears. But i made it to the United States senate. And i made it to the United States senate in part because american americans back then were investing in kids like me. I went to a Community College that cost 50 a semester. Because america was really making those investments in kids. Today thats not happening. Today its a rigged playing field, and its not working. Washington is not working. For hardworking middleclass families. But senator, so many people say but its their own fault. They got into this trouble all by themselves. They call it lack of integrity, lack of selfcontrol. But the research and youve been working for the middle class for a very long time you found something very different. You said that sometimes good people just get in bad situations. Elaborate on that a little bit. Yeah, one of the things we discovered i went out with my coauthors, and we did a lot of Research Starting 25 years ago on families who went broke. And what we discovered is that those families mostly looked like the rest of middleclass america. Went to school, bought homes, got married, had kids. But the difference was they got totally slammed by a serious medical problem, had a long period out of work or had a death in the family or a divorce. Those three reasons alone account for more than 90 of all bankruptcy filings. [ barks ] whoo mmm oh, yeah [ whistling ] [ male announcer ] discover your new orleans. President obama is in kuala lumpur this morning, the last stop on his weeklong asian swing. Pressure is building in ukraine this weekend as separatists are now holding a group of European Military observers, and concerns are increasing about a possible invasion. As Russian Troops continue exercises along the border. More from Holly Williams in donets, ukraine. Reporter good morning. Theres been a ratcheting up of tensions here in ukraine as the countrys government struggles with prorussian separatists. Several European Military observers were detained by armed separatists yesterday just north of here in the town of slaviansk, which is held by militants. Now, the separatists claim that one of the observers is a spy and that they were carrying unauthorized materiels. Moscow said it will do everything it can to secure the release of those observers, but they have not yet been freed. Both ukraine and the u. S. Accuse russia of inciting the insurgency here and of aiding the separatists. Russia denies that but has said if theres violence here it could intervene. And just over the border from ukraine, thousands of Russian Troops began a new round of exercises this week using some of moscows newest hardware. Those drills and the threat of military intervention prompted ukraines Prime Minister to accuse russia yesterday of wanting to start world war iii by occupying his country. For cbs this morning saturday, Holly Williams donetsk, ukraine. This morning the Los Angeles Area is one step closer to a permanent change in its notorious daily commute. For some drivers, that means getting where theyre going faster, but the l. A. Freeways will no longer be free. Danielle nottingham has the story. Reporter on any given day, there are plenty of reasons for los angeles drivers to gripe about gridlock. But soon they may have one more. Because these freeways may only be free to those willing to sit in traffic. Los angeles transit officials voted thursday to extend a pilot program, giving solo ifr droodrivers the option to pay to use express lanes. Its now in place on two major l. A. Arteries covering just 25 miles. It could eventually expand to over 500 miles of existing carpool lanes. In a way to reduce congestion and promoting other transportation modes. Reporter its rush hour and as you can see, it pays to be in the express lane. Thats if youre willing to pay for a transponder like this. Now, next to me you can see traffic is at a standstill. But because of this im able to skip the traffic. Its easy to see why hundreds of thousands here in Southern California are willing to make this choice if they can afford it. Drivers in these toll lanes have to pay anywhere from 25 cents to 1. 40 each mile. Its called congestion pricing. The more cars on the road the higher the cost. But some critics call them lexus lanes. Giving preference to those who can afford to pay as much as 15 for a oneway trip. You really have to think about the cost especially if youre part of the workers in Southern California which means youre barely making it as is. Reporter paying to get around traffic isnt new. Atlanta, miami, minneapolis and seattle have similar programs. But in carobsessed los angeles where Public Transportation is scarce or impractical, its a big change. Usc transportation professor jim moore says angelinos no longer have a choice. Transportation economists have argued for over 60 years that the only really systemic solution is tolling. Reporter perhaps the only way for traffic to stop taking a toll on l. A. Drivers is for more of them to start paying one. For cbs this morning, danielle nottingham, los angeles. This week nasa administrator Charles Boulden raised eyebrows at a space conference in washington when he said this about humanitys future. If this species is to survive indefinitely, we need to become a multiplanet species. One reason we need to go to mars is to we can learn a little bit about living on another planet so that when my granddaughter is ready to move out of the solar system, well know a lot more about living away from this planet than we know today. As a first step boulden laid out a plan for a multibilliondollar manned mission to mars by the year 2030. Derek pitts is chief astronomer and planetarium programs director at the Franklin Institute Science Museum in philadelphia. Good morning. Good morning. How do we do this . Well, we have to first of all commit the dollars to doing this. We really have to change some minds and get people to realize that this is a very important thing to do for humanity. And then what wed do is wed build the launch capability to get the heavy equipment up there. Then wed build the infrastructure on the martian surface, train astronauts to be able to live there for quite some time and then make sure we have good Ground Support even from this distance for them. Were talking about an idea thats as bold as declaring that we wanted to go to the moon in the 60s. Yes. How does this compare as a challenge to that . You know theres no reason why this cant be done. We can do this just as well as we did that. And when you think about it, for the Apollo Missions we actually started from dead scratch with nothing at all. And we made it to the moon safely in about eight years. So now we have much more capability, much more understanding, and it is a challenge, but theres no reason why we cant meet that challenge. When the president was at the space center we all heard him say this is something we need to focus on. Lets set some goals. Yes. But where is the money coming from, and how much will it take . Thats a really great question. I cant say exactly how much it will take. It could be 100 billion, a lot of money. But the real issue is do we have the will to do this . Do we really want to do this . If we think about how weve spent money on some other things, you know the amount of money we spent in iraq for months billions of dollars, the money is there. Its really the question of do we have the will to do it. Why mars which looks like a dead planet . Mars is a really great target for a couple of reasons. Its more like earthen that the moon is. Its a reasonable distance away from us, and we really need to go to mars so we can better understand how the planets of our solar system formed and use mars to help inform us about how earth formed. The more we learn about planets like mars, the more we can understand about other planets. Both in our solar system and in other solar systems. It was surprising to hear boulden make reference to his granddaughter because in his eyes, this is something that could happen in 20 in 30 years or even less. Yeah. What is the plan . Is it a colony in mars . Do we live on mars . The first step is we can go there on a regular basis and eventually probably build up some sort of colony there. If we think of mars as a steppingstone, a weigh station out to the deep solar system environment, thats a good one to use for a place where we can go and sort of get ourselves put together before we make the long trip out from there. Derek, in your view how far off with a multiplanet society be . Oh i think a multiplanet society is easily decades away without any question at all. Maybe 100 years out. But when you think about how planet, it was done incrementally, and we built as we went along. And now, of course the whole planet is populated, occupied almost at every corner. The same can happen for the solar system if we have the determination and identify the real goals that we should try to achieve. Derek pitts, fascinating stuff. Thanks so much. My pleasure. Its about 11 after the hour. Now heres a look at the weather for your weekend. Up next, the Lone Star State mobilizes to protect its treasured flower. Reporter im Brandon Scott. Amazing historical artifact. When it comes to politics texas runs red. But for a few weeks every spring during wildflower season the Lone Star State turns blue. The bluebonnet is the official flower of texas, and right now its blooming at its peak. But as Brandon Scott reports, bluebonnets face a growing threat from a foreign enemy. Reporter to texans the bluebonnet is more than a wildflower. Like shamrocks to the irish, these blue blossoms are icons of the Lone Star State. Native to texas and only in bloom for a few weeks every spring tourists come from around the world to see them. And its texas tradition for families to put on their sunday best and take yearly photos in the flowers. I think theyre beautiful. They really are. Reporter karen rogers yard in the countryside near dallas is batheded in bluebonnets. Not all texans have oil fields in their backyards and swimming pools. Id really rather have the bluebonnets, i think. Reporter like almost everything here in texas, bluebonnets are tough. They can stand up to strong winds and harsh growing conditions, but now theyre facing a threat from a foreign invader. That invader is this yellow weed that somehow made its way from europe and asia to 12 u. S. States. Scientists call it but texans call it the bastard cabbage. Has this earned its name . Well it has because its messing with our bluebonnets and we dont like that here. Reporter dave is Vice President at the dallas arboretum. He and his fellow scientists are concerned about a recent spread of bastard cabbage abluebonnet territory. These lower leaves when they sprout, they shade out the bluebonnet so it cant get any light and grow. If theres enough of these in the same area as where the bluebonnets are, these win out and the you aboutbluebonnets lose. Reporter the Texas Department of transportation is planting taller native grasses on the roadsides. And landowners are mowing down the cabbage in their fields. This year there were tenfold the number of plants on the property. Reporter Brent Humphries owns six acres near austin. Hes on a mission to pull every bastard cabbage from his ground. Its becoming more and more feared that these could completely overrun and take over and decimate the bluebonnet population. Reporter how big of a danger is the bastard cabbage to these bluebonnets . It could take over and wed see more yellow flowers and less blue flowers. Thats our concern that it will get out of hand. Reporter but texans have never feared a fight. Theyre intent to protect these iconic blue blossoms. Brandon scott, palmer texas. Theyre such a beautiful flower. You used to pick them in texas, you said. I used to. They tell you its a wives tale that its illegal. I googled it. You can pick them. You werent breaking a law. I believed it. Next time im home ill steal a whole bunch. Now shes put all those memories together. There goes gravity. Lisa robinson welcome to cbs this morning saturday. Thank you. Good morning. You were instagram and twitter before there was instagram and twitter. There were no cell phones. And in the book i talk a lot about the differences between being on the road with a bock band in the 70s when they were come here from england and their wives couldnt find pictures of them with any of the groupies that they were hanging out in clubs with. There was none of that stuff. It was a lot more private then. You put it in context, and you have to realize it was private. And if you were back stage with them or if you were on the road with them or you traveled with them such as i did right. I had to report the stories as much as i could. But thats a really interesting line you had to walk in those days because to get access, to get trust right. Zoo in some ways you kind of had to protect them but you also had to be honest. I didnt really feel i was protecting them. I felt that they had a right to a private life. There was such a thing as a private life. I still feel there should be such a thing as a private life. Right. And i do write a lot about that in the book because its really in context, it was just hanging out. It just happened. It wasnt all planned. There werent publicists. You didnt have to go through people with clipboards. I mean there was a backstage pass hierarchy which i also write about in the book, but it was easier. It was just fun. You had such unprecedented access to the Rolling Stones. How did you get that . I had been on tour already with led zeppelin because led zeppelin wanted somebody to write about them in england about how big they were in america because they were getting terrible reviews. People thought they were a cheesy, heavy metal band. And in the chapter that i have on led zeppelin i talk about how i really loved their music. I was one of the few. And so since i had written about led zeppelin mick jagger saw that in england and then he wanted me to come on the road with them. You were one of the only women journalists in those days. You had an interesting conversation with mick jagger about women. And he told you what . Well i dont think i can say all of it on air, but he just said there was no reason for women to be on tour unless they had a job to do or they were there to sleep with him, i guess, or somebody else. And how did you react to that . Well, i had a job to do. Lets put it that way. I was writing about them but i also was a press liaison. It was at a time when you could do that. You could say to him, you should talk to this person. You should talk to this person and also talk to me and ill write about it. So that was kind of the gig that i had. But what was it like to be a woman . I mean, it seems like the way you describe these scenarios, they were heavily it was a boys club, and you were the one woman a lot of times backstage with these guys. What was that like . It was i kind of skipped it in a way because i knew i wasnt there to sleep with them. I wasnt taking drugs with them. So in many ways i was on a different tour and not participating in the sort of hedonistic part of it. And again, i just i read a lot about this that sort of weaves throughout the book because i just never felt i felt we were all in it together. We loved the music. And i was not necessary it wasnt even a question of equal. It was a question of just understanding a life and the world. I know you call your career a lucky accident, and were thankful for that lucky accident. Lisa robinson, thank you so much. Thank you. Coming up is there anyone funnier in the world . Eddie izzard is out to prove it here and everywhere. Good morning, eddie. Youre watching cbs this morning saturday. Lets just talk about this mission you have. Youre coming up, youre trying to take new york businesses and have them move back move to texas. We like to give people an option to know that there are options out there. And really, its a twofold mission, charlie. Im unabashedly a proponent of low paxs and a regulatory climate thats fair and predictable, legal system that doesnt allow for oversuing skilled work force, and we have all those in the state of texas. But its also to drive a conversation. I asked the governor to consider having a debate over these issues. And i think it would be instructional for the country to see two very large substantive state governors sit down and talk about the policies of tax and regulatory climate of legal system and skilled work force and to let the people of the country decide which of those best suit their needs. You like debates . Yeah, im getting to where i like them better. I did a lot of those back in 2011. Some of them worked out all right and some of them didnt. You hear what people are saying, a little free advice for rick perry, the fewer debates, the fewer oops. I thank you for that advice but ill make my own. Youll make your own decision. You know, governor, your aides say that you got into the race too late last time. We see you giving interviews challenging a prominent democratic governor to a debate. Is this the beginning of a new president ial campaign in norah, theyre absolutely correct. One of the more humbling experiences ive had in my life was going through the process of running for the presidency. I learned a lot of lessons. May be my favorite routine of all time. Eddie is about to embark on a 25nation comedy tour. It ought to be a lot of laughs. Since the l. A. Times calls him the funniest man in the known universe. Good morning. Good morning. The sequel to that death star canteen is where god comes down and orders spaghetti carbonara which is for lord vader and then he comes in and then theres a fight. Mr. Stevens has to come out and stop the fight. Please send that clip to it is kind of weird. 20 million youtube hits. On that routine. On death star canteen, yes. It is odd and kids all over the world and ive retweeted other kids doing it their versions of my stuff because i used to repeat monty pythons stuff when i was a kid and python coming back doing their gigs in july back in britain. Thats amazing. Now this kids doing my stuff and thats just odd but beautiful. You mention as a kid, so im curious, how does someone go from a street performer in london to selling out arenas like you did . How does your comedy evolve . Well i didnt really want to do street performing. I always liked sketch comedy like mondaypyty python. Im some weird little crazy kid. Just different voices and wearing different uniforms. Then i realized standup, you can do it without any of the costumes. I went through street performing accidentally because i didnt know standup existed or didnt think i could do it because i was part of a group. It taught me how to play in a vast, open space. Because i did street performing i could do Hollywood Bowl. That got me really because you have this confidence just standing there performing. And now im doing it in different languages. Youre doing this tour in french and in german. Yeah. But to celebrate the 70th anniversary of dday . Just before i play chicago, im going to go to normandy. Im flying to paris. I get there at 11 00 in the morning on the 6th. I will be just taking part in the commemorations that day, then ill do a gig at 7 00 in germany, 8 00 in english and at 9 00 in french and then i fly back and do chicago on the 7th. Now, you do speak french but youve learned german for this . Yes, i did two years of german at school and i just did two months in berlin. So i had to learn the whole thing. But my spoken german is about 40 fluent. Im just doing this. Im doing spanish now. And then russian and then arabic. I cant even imagine. Do the audiences know that you have just memorized, that you dont actually speak these languages . I actually tell them that i have memorized it. Its in a manuscript. But i also adlib a little bit so they see that hes got sort of broken german. I did a tour interview on radio in german. But do the jokes translate, eddie . They translate. Basically the mainstream america doesnt get me right . Mainstream britain doesnt get me. Mainstream germany doesnt get me. Alternative america, iceland will get me. People like comedy central, people who have been students or wouldbe students. You have to make some little changes in terms of wording. I try not to make any changes. I hope the same show i do in berlin would be the same show i do in Hollywood Bowl or beacon in new york. I know in american you have a joke in englishamerican. I had this joke they had this healthy mind and a healthy body ideal, olympic ideal. And i said nowadays adult bodies are like two weasels covered in gravy nailed to the back of a tractor which is just kind of a little bit poetic nailed to the back of a tractor. But in german [ speaking german ] which took me three weeks to learn. And by the time i got it perfectly, they were not laughing. They were laughing less than when i used to make the mistakes. And i realize it sounds like a hodgepodge of german words. And you have to i had to come up with some other way of saying it because its not actually funny. Its just bonkers. Theres no logic to it two weasels nailed to the back of a tractor. Doesnt make any sense. You mentioned as a kid growing up loving python. John cleese called you the lost python. I actually asked him and he said yes i did. I forgot to ask him, john i dont know quite what it means. I think it means that i just was lost because i didnt get there in time because i was born 20 years later. I would have loved to have been in python. I once turned up at the comedy festival with him on stage. That was like being in the England National Football Team soccer team, and going on with them as a substitute. It just blew my mind. And i just love him to death. And theyre playing in london. The 20th of july will be maybe the last ever python show ever. Im plugging someone elses gig here so that people in america know. 20th of july. I think the tickets have just gone on sale. But my show is here in america. Good luck with the tour eddie. As chef at the ritzcarlton in orlando, hes the only floridian inducted into the whos who of food and beverage. Welcome back to the dish. Wonderful to be here. Thank you. And you brought waffles. You brought chicken and waffles, part of the history of our food. Fabulous. What else do we have here . Well really anthony, these are a collection of dishes that showcase the things that ive been doing over the last 40 years of cooking in florida. Ive written two books that are out there, one a cookbook my key west kitchen. Thats where the chicken and waffles come from which actually come from a famous bar called the green parrot, the oldest bar in florida over 100 years old where they every year have a fats knowfat s novarro. And this has a history with key west. Its a great brunch dish. Then the other book is called no experience necessary. And its actually how i answered an ad for my very first cooking job because precede ent to that i had been many other things. So this book covered about 20 years of my life. Coming up through the ranks. Tony bourdain has a nice blurb on the cover. Thank goodness for tony. It tells the underbelly of the story of what its like to really have been a chef precedeent to the food network, precede precedent to the james beard award, not really politically correct world we came from as chefs, growing up without ever any expectation of being on a show like this. You guys were the pioneers. You sort of set this all up with what we have now. You know we came out of the time when the french were running the kitchens. It was coexistent to the bicentennial. Americans were feeling like what is our food . One of the jobs i had thats described in length are the carnie corn dogs. Before i became a chef i was many things including a carnie. I was going town to town in the midwest. Theres Something Sweet in that breading. Its delicious. The corn is going to be sweet and the sausage, you can buy the favorite kind that you want. In the carnival we didnt have cuisine or grand dishes. We didnt have ceviche. Well, key lime pie. The coleslaw comes from a restaurant i worked in that was a barbecue restaurant in illinois. The ceviche showcases the kind of thing youd expect with me coming from key west. I like the food to be full of flavors, very bright. And i like the stories of the books. Both the cookbook and the memoir to be things that people dont expect about a chef. I want to ask you, because you really came up with Charlie Trotter and emeril lagasse. Is that sense of camaraderie still there today . Do the new chefs coming into your world . There you guys are. Look at that. I think yeah thats us. Look at emeril lagasse. My goodness. And theres charlie on the left. We were brothers banded brothers. I dont know that its still the same because we were in a much more innocent era, an era where people didnt look at chefs with such a you know, a laudatory mentality. We would send each other faxes right before preservice before we opened. Charlie would send me what he was running that night. Emeril would send me what he was running that night. And then wed go to our cooks and waiters and say look what charlie and emeril are doing, but with a real sense of you know, brother, brotherhood which still carries on today with emeril and in november well be doing a tribute to charlie here in new york at the four seasons. Still get to tribute charlie. You mentioned that you had a whole lot of jobs before you got started. You grew up in illinois which is pretty cool. How did you end up in florida . I was so damn tired of winter. Yes. We know the feeling. You know the feeling . Yeah, this winter especially for you all. And a friend of mine an older friend one year was at a party i was at one night. And i said hey, wheres steve . Its like 1 00 in urbana. And my other friend said he moved to key west. Hes down there doing something well it wasnt legal, but he was doing something down there. I said does anybody want to go to key west . These two brothers were there. Yeah, weve got a van outside. Lets go. We got into that van and we drove 36 hours to key west that night. And so my life in key west began then. And as the book tells you, we went to colorado illinois new york, key west we went back to key west and then along the way i fell in love with a girl named janet. That changes everything. And she was 17. I was 21. And we ended up working and staying in key west. I cant decide whats better the chicken or the drink. Thank you so much. Oh, the drink.
