Ships and planes from several nations including the u. S. Are engaged in a search now entering its eighth day. Investigators expect that the planes transponders were deliberately turned off. Seth, some very big developments overnight. Reporter thats right. Good morning to you. After more than a week of searching and speculation, today some answers from malaysias prime minnesota. He said whatever happened to flight 370, its Communication Systems were cut deliberately. The last signal from the plane came 7 1 2 hours after takeoff. Speaking to a room packed with media, malaysias Prime Minister said new satellite information indicated that two of the aircrafts Communications Systems were switched off separately before the plane left malaysian airspace. Then the plane turned back going west over malaysia then turning again to the northwest. These movements are consistent with deliberate action by someone on the plane. The Prime Minister stopped short of calling this a hijacking. He did say authorities were refocusing their investigation on the crew and passengers on board. Sighting new data, the Prime Minister said the last confirmed satellite communication with the plane was at 8 11 a. M. 7 1 2 hours after it took off. Authorities are still unable to confirm the exact location of the plane at that point, but say there are two possibilities. The northern corridor stretching approximately from the border of kazakhstan and turk min stan to northern thailand. All of the southern corridor stretching across the middle east from indonesia to southern indian ocean. The Investigation Team is working to further refine the information. Reporter officials are now ending the search in the South China Sea and redirecting some of the more than 100 search vessels currently looking for flight 370. Over the last seven days we have followed every lead and looked into every possibility. For the families and friends of theirs involved we hope this new information brings us one step closer to finding the plane. What was happening during the seven hours . Certainly we need to be looking and try to understand what happened. Now that we understand theres human intervention i think were going to have to stop using our accident investigation techniques and begin turning this into more criminal investigation techniques. One of the things we learned, marks is the planes altitude weekend up hire. And then lower. What does it suggest . It could be a struggle someone taking over the aircraft and not knowing,000 fly it. Lots of questions that we really begin to believe theres human intervention rather than powe potential mechanical failure. There are so many countries involved in this point. Why do we get the sense that malaysia is taking so much time in releasing information when so many people want to know what happened here . I think its a good question. I think earlier on they believed they could handle this type of investigation. It became overwhelming to them. There was embarrassing information about their inability to track face passport passports and they began to draw in. The investigation really began to blossom when they finally turned the information over that they could validate the tracks that they were just kind of looking at and couldnt whauns they were seeing. The area theyre looking at that seth pointed out is enormous. Mark, is there a possibility that we may not find the plane . The possibility exists anthony, but i really believe we will. Its a 777. Its a very large aircraft. When it finally goes down well be able to see debris. This aircraft has probably been on the ground now for probably seven days. The airplane cant fly for 24 hours. We do believe if the aircraft was filled it could fly for 7,700 miles. We dont believe it had that much fuel on it. We will find this aircraft. We will understand what happened when we get the boxes to be able to tell us exactly what happened on board. These investigators i should i say investigators, but theyre turning to crowd sourcing. There are individual people now who are studying these grids. What are they hoping that someone, a regular person could find . It would be nice if we could get something from that but i really believe the folks on the ground doing the search and rescue search and recovery theyll find whats necessary to discover what happened. The most likely is it went into the indian ocean somehow. If it is there, how difficult will it be to find . Well, the air france that i was involved in it took us five days to get any debreechl two years later we were able to recover the boxes. Two years to find the plane. Why so long . Well they just didnt have an exact pinpoint. But they continues to come back based on some calculations and tomb some very as a matter of fact, it was the folks who helped the french be able to recover and actually pinpoint where the aircraft was. The pending vote has heightened tensions in the region prompting Ukrainian Forces to prepare for the worst. The u. S. And europe are also planning their next move which could come in the form of sanctions as early as monday. It is not where we want to go. Its not what were choosing as a first choice, but if the wrong choices are made then there will be no choice but to respond appropriately because of the gravity of this breach of International Standard breach of Enter National law. There will be a u. N. Security council vote to declare sovereignty and declare sundays resolution invalid but the resolution is not expected to pass. The emergency workers are continuing to clear the debris from the site of the deadly explosion. Theyre expected to reach the basement levels today. They plan on conducting tests to pinpoint the source and time line of the apparent natural gas leak. Surveillance video obtained by our new york station wcbs shows an explosion that destroyed a pair of fivestory parents in upper manhattan. It blew out windows and sprayed debris in all directions. It happened at 9 30 wednesday morning. Utility workers arrived too late. It revealed that an unsafe concentration of gas had seeped into the ground near the buildings. Is there any indication of how long gas may have been leaking prior to the explosion . Thats exactly what we want to find out. Investigators are focusing on the underground gas main that runs in front of the buildings. The 8inch cast iron pipe was installed in 1887. Firefighters worked friday to clear the remaining rubble. They believe the cause and or gin of the explosion could be found in the buildings basements. Out shows the cost to replace a broken gas line run in the billions. Thank you michelle. Its the 10 billion question. The challenge for congress here is to try to come up with a new system if thats what they want to do get rid of fannie and freddie. Who and what is going to provide credit. Twothirds are made possible through fannie and freddie. A lot of people dont understand what these two companies do. They buy them from lenders. They package them into securities and theyre guaranteed to make those investors whole if borrowers involve. Otherwise those investors would not be purchasing u. S. Mortgages. It makes possible the 30year fixed Rate Mortgage that you can pay off at any time so you can finance. Which many countries dont have. You can lock into your rate. So if were going to get into fanny and freddie, its going require some new system of guaranteeing mortgage bonds or hold mortgage loans. What about those responsibility . The Justice Department put out a report saying they another doing enough. What should be happening at this point . Right. There was a report this week saying the government is saying one thing about its prosecution of mortgage fraud effort us but actually the fbi has not looked into it. The Justice Department says thats not really fair. Mortgage fraud is on the decline. There was a lot of problems during the housing bubble. Lending standards tightened up so were not seeing as mump. The questions themselves were not fair. They were illinformed questions. They were drawing on myths and things that had not been proven that no one had sworn to statements that i dont even know they were accurate statements. The senator said he had letters and faxes but when asked to present them he refused to present them. So i dont know if those were, in fact, true. So you can start writing the Great American novel. Joining us our cbs news chief medical correspondent and cbs contributor dr. Holly phillips. First up a new major weapon in the fight against alzheimers. Jon . For the first time researchers have developed a blood test that may be able to predict whether someone will get the disease or not. 48yearold cappy friedman watched her mother, two sisters, and a brother all develop alzheimers. She wonders if shes next. Im very very concerned. Ive about had to watch, you know, three siblings die from this dreadful disease. She and her boyfriend enrolled in a study to see if a simple blood test could predict her future. The study followed 525 people age 70 and older. After three years, 53 patients were diagnosed with alzheimers or early dementia. When analyzing the blood of those 53 patients researchers found a grud of ten lipids or fats that were at lower levels than healthy patients. We had individuals who also were enrolled who were cognitively normal and we wanted to know whether the blood test the tenlipped panel, would predict their cognitive impairment. Reporter it did. Researchers studied the blood of those who were relatively normal and developed tee men eded dementia. If f this is valid, what do you find . We find it based on individuals that never existed before. Reporter they were not told of their condition. If a test become valsable he would want to get it. If i have some disease, even though i couldnt be cured, i would certainly want to know about it. Jon, it feels like across the board researchers are calling this one a game challenger. Right. So why . Its so important, vinita because right now theres no effective treatment for alzheimers at all and the thinks has been that the changes begin 10 20 maybe 30 years before the actual symptoms start and maybe the drugs were giving now are too little, too late. If we give them earlier, they may be effective. The other thing is we never had anything to follow. If there were a simple blood test, that would be an amazing way to follow. What are the next steps in getting this in wide use . Two of 20 normal patients test positive. You dont want to have that. I spoke with dr. Fedorov and theyre maybe adding material in with the lipid panel. I think over time the tests are going to be better. With time, i think time is on their side and think this should be a very very helpful test. I hope so. Also this week the report of journal of pediatrics races question on tell ooh affects of kids when parents are distracted by their cell phones. Other than leaving me wracked with gift researchers look at 55 groups of people who are having a meal at a restaurant. The group had parents and caregivers and kids. Not surprisingly 40 of the groups, parents were on their devices. Kids responded in various ways. Some kind of amused themselves and others escalated out with bad behavior to try to get the grownups behavior. What i found is they were much more likely to respond harshly, yell or scold the kids if they were trying to focus on their devices. We know short term, theyre responding badly, the kids are responding badly. What about long term . Researchers are focused two things in particular. Number one, language and vocabulary. All of those abilities for kids are directly related to how much conversation theyre having with their groanups some of if e were not engaging them having that conversation, it can actually affect their brain development. The other is all emotional. Kids do get their feeling hurt when grownups are not paying attention. Number one, im going to try to not feel guilty and keep the 411 in my bag. Im guilty too. Today the countrys Prime Minister says the boeings 77 ps beep 7s bee beacons were shut off. Today some answers came from malaysias Prime Minister who said whatever happened to flight 370, its communications were cut deliberately. First system was cut at it reached asias east coast and the second was cut at it entered the vietnamese airspace and then it was report thad the plane turned back and headed west over malaysia. Initially it had been picked up. He confirmed that. Then said it took a northwest route. Where exactly the plane wound up we do not know but he said the last signal from the plane came at 8 11 a. M. Saturday morning local time. Thats 7 1 2 hours after it took off and that signal was pinging a satellite somewhere on a northern or southern border. Almost malk it like an arc that extends out from northern thailand all the way to kazakhstan or the south all the way down deep into the south indian ocean. The Prime Minister stopped short of calling this a hijacking but he said that the investigation was refocusing on crew members and passengers on board that plane. What do you think is going on in that regard . Two things could have happened. An hour into the flight its on auto pilot when two things happen. One, somebody takes it off auto pilot. Its a manual command and theres the disengaging on the transponder itself. It gives out the planes altitude and identifies the plane. Once you turn that transponder off which hardly happens anywhere its essentially becomes a product of the flight option. We know there were some significant changes in altitude. Why did it take eight days of the investigation. These seem like big things. How do they finally realize thats what happened . Theyve got to correlate all the data. Its essentially a fayne fax ma chiend on the plain. Thal got turned off hater on too. The bottom line is it gettets down to pilot intent. They had to no what theyre doing. When they plane goes up to 45,000 feet which is significantly higher than its operational limits somethings going wrong. We saw the plane go up to nearly 45,000 feet peter and then reports are that it went down as low as 20,000. What does that suggest to you . It suggests that smns hand flying the plane at night manually taking it who may not have any visual reference points because theyre off. Theyre telling people we dont want you to know where we are. Youre tilling people you dot not want to be identified. It was mentioned theyre look at everyones homes. What was the plane carrying in the belly . Was it carrying lithium ion batteries so it was causing a fire that then incapacitated the crew and emails of the pilots and everyone on the plane to see if there was any unusual chatter, unusual Financial Transactions marital problem, any problems with being disciplined and a pie hot or copilot. Anything that would lead to a motivation. Right now theyre looking at the backgrounds of every passenger to see who had flying experience. Were also hearing peter, u. S. Its real name is a whole lot more complicated and so is the story. Its a mural that spans 133 feet in length. It has words, 65 pallets of food and words of wisdom. To nick, its a smorgasbord of literary and culinary delight. Theyre beautiful. Its called its almost like supercalifragilistic expialidocious. Its three words. Gastro type oh graphic cal assemblage. It was built by him and a team of artists in the 1960s. It took almost two years for it to be completed and grated the wall at the Network Headquarters for cbs also known as blackrock. Why would anyone spend that kind of time on a mural that was going up in the Office Cafeteria . I think it was indicative of what they wanted to do. They wanted to do something unusual, lafgt, and significant. They were cbs found erer. They put the shine on the tiffany ned work. Who came to cbs after golden. Lou designed the cbs eye and he became part of cbss structure. Why was their bar so high . My hopes were very up because when you think of it its a Perfect Place for it. Over the course of the five years it took to ready the pavilion he singlehandle lid refurbished every crook and its perfect. Every letter. Yeah. Last month he reasem birthdayed it where gastro gastro typographical assemblage was on display for the first time. Its remarkable. I wish lou was there to see it. What would he say . I dont know. Good job. Well, the fiveyear restoration cost about 100,000 which was paid for by the Culinary Institute of america, the cia, with a 25,000 donation from the william s. Payly foundation. And can you imagine what that would cost . Im glad to see it up. Its so cool. When you see it up and you look at it. It brings a sense of calm and curiosity because there ee so much to look at.
