Activities have not only gone against Church Teachings but have left them and by an extension of the vatican open the blackmail. The three cardinals who compiled the report will meet with Pope Benedict on monday a sign of how seriously he takes the issue. Whats not clear is whether the dossier will be handed to the cardinals before they go into the conclave before they consider the next pope or whether it will be in a safe for his consideration. Good morning on a rainy day in rome. It sure is. I can see that. I wanted to ask you. You heard allen pizzeys report. Do you think that weighed on the popes decision to resign . Anthony were dealing with speculation from an italian newspaper at this time speculation that hes neither confirmed or resigned. We have to remember just prior to his election he spoke of the bride of christ and he said very specifically we need to root this out and so it impedes the mission of the church and so certainly by abdicating, rae sign resigning, retiring, he wants the successor to take the bull by the horns and say, these are the issues we need to uncover them we need to resolve them. What are the chances that that happens, monsignor . I think the figures are rising. Certainly very strong figures are rising. We have here at the vatican someone like carl moquoette. Someone as bold as cardinal sidney, Cardinal Pell a very bold figure. We have someone young, ee vashs in the philippines, carl tagly. Someone in south america, cardinal shera. All of them are strong powerful candidates who can mark what the issues are, deal with them and uncover what needs to be done here at the holy sea. Monsignor, at the last public mass Pope Benedict himself said the church is disfigured. How fractured do you think the vatican is at this point . The holy father was speaking just a few minutes ago at the end of his spiritual exercises, and once again he used words which really struck me very much. He used the word the dark night. He used the word corruption. He used the word evil. He was referring to the world, but at the same time hes referring to the realities, the marks on the church. He wants the mission of the church to sign forth. I believe he understands these are problems that face us and in order that the Church Becomes a light for the world, which we all want a witness for the world, he wants a successor who knows the issues can deal with them, and say we want to move forward. And what are the chances that the church moves forward with a reformer. Most of the cardinals that you mentioned are more on the conservative side of the ledger. Its very interesting, rebecca. They are more on the conservative side, so we want a figure who remains with the Church Teaching, is faithful to the Church Teaching but at the same time recognizes what benedict xvi referred to. Issues that mar the bride of christ issues that impede the mission of the church. We need someone who remains faithful to the Church Teaching at the same time says unless we deal with these issues uncover them in the same line that benedict xvi wanted them uncovered, we will never be a witness to the church and to the world, impressing questions that people want answered in the difficulties they face. Is that not what we all want . Benedict knows that you know that, i know that. Let us pray that the holy spirit will raise up a new pope that can truly take the bull by the horns and say lets move forward with this situation and lets become a witness for the world and to the church today. Olympian Oscar Pistorius, known as the blade runner for his prosthetic legs is free on bail this morning and it could be months before he goes on trial for what prosecutors say was the premeditated shooting death of his girl friend. Kelly kolb yeah is in london with the latest. Kelly, thank you for joining us. Rebecca, good morning. Oscar pistorius is spending time at his uncles home in pretoria. It could be six months to a year before his trial begins. Reporter parole officers met with Oscar Pistorius at his uncles home in pretoria this morning less than 24 hours after he awaited bail. The families cried out in relief when the judge gave his decision. Uncle pistorius. Yes, we are relieved that oscar got bail today, but at the same time we are in mourning for the death of reeva with her family. Reporter the next several months oscars attorneys will be building their case that he thought he was firing at an intruder valentines morning when he fired through the bathroom door, killing his girlfriend reeva steenkamp. Lawyers will already have to face a skeptical judge. I have difficulty coming to term the fact that the accused did not seek to verify what exactly was in the toilet. Reporter lead detective hilton botha, himself, charged with seven counts of attempted murder has been replaced. Sources on both sides have told cbs news that key evidence has yet to become heard. Whatever happens, its not going to bring reeva back you know . I want just it is and truth. As a condition of his bail he was ordered to stay away from steenkamps family potential witnesses, and his own home, which is still a crime scene. Next we speak about the startling similarities between pistoriuss case and o. J. s case more than 20 years ago. A new round of troubles. The Justice Department has joined a lawsuit against disgraced cycling champion Lance Armstrong over his now admitted use while he was on the Postal Services racing team. Bob orr has the details. Reporter the Justice Department alleges Lance Armstrong violated his sponsorship deal with the u. S. Postal service by using banned performanceenhancing drugs, in winning seven Tour De France titles. The Postal Service paid 31 million to sponsor armstrongs cycling team and now they want that money back and could see total damages approach 1g 00 million. The lawsuit first filed by armstrongs teammate floyd landis in 2010 claims the team regularly used banned substances and methods to enhance their performance. Armstrong denied it at the time. Hes got no proof. Its his word versus ours. Reporter but in 2011 another teammate Tyler Hamilton told 60 minutes he saw armstrong take banned substances including the blood doepg doping drug epo. There was epo, there was testosterone testosterone, and i did see a transfusion, a blood transfusion. Reporter last moth in an interview with oprah winfrey, armstrong admitted doping. I view the situation as one big lie that i repeated a lot of times. And as you said. It wasnt as if i said no and moved off it. Armstrongs lawyer says the lawsuit is without merit since the post office profited from armstrongs victories but they objected to him settling the case. Theres now less than a week to go before the acrosstheboard spending cuts known as the sequester slammed down on nearly every government agency, but the two sides, the white house and republicans in congress, theyre not talking. President obamas key argument is it will cost jobs and hurt the recover i economy. My hope is we can see a different course taken by congress. This should be a nobrainer. Reporter the president has spend part of the last nine days appearing with the schoolchildren who could lose their teachers and with the first First Responders who say they could lose their jobs if the spending money supporting them is cut across the board. Ive been very clear that these kinds of arbitrary automatic cuts would have an adverse impact on family on teachers on parents who are reliant on head start programs on our military readiness, on medical Health Services medical research. This is not a smart way to reduce the deficit. Reporter but they point out the cuts will be gradual and very few policemen are paid with federal money. Its untrue unfair dishonest, disingenuous. He puts Law Enforcement he puts firemen and policemen who 98 of them are being paid for with your local taxes and says youre going to lose your local policemen because of this. Its not true. And yet furloughs in areas like defense contracting and air Traffic Control are being planned. What isnt being planned, rebecca, are any serious negotiations between the president and congress to stop the sequester next friday. Why at andrews in washington. Thank you. He talked yesterday about balanced approach which is his code for more tax increases. The republicans have already signed off on one tax increase. Are they going to sign off on another . In the short term i dont believe they are. I think the republicans made it clear. If nothing happens, the spending cuts go into effect and they want to bank those. Locker term, it dont think its going to be them. Only spending cut solution because we have a big deficit. And the two places to solve it very spending cuts and tax inincreases. We saw this at the end of last year. Theres the fiscal cliff. He said oh push the sequester to march 1. Is it possible we push the sequester to april or may or june or maybe its next year 2014. It feel like weve been going through the budget deadlines again and again and again. Its definitely possible. Aft this well have a fight over whether to fumtd the government or shut down. One of the possible solutions is we get into the sequester. Things get bad and they decide to send the second Aircraft Carrier there and they do exactly as you say, push off the sequester. Until we get a bigger deal to deal with the deficit, were going have a lot of these things. The president has had everybody in his cabinet coming out with apocalyptic proclamations here. How quickly and how serious is it going to be . Its not going to be march 1 its going be more toward the end of march for a lot of these things. The things that will affect us, kids wont see gettysburg in the middle east fewer airports. One thats due to the economy, theres a chance it could weaken the economy this year. One other thing that sets the economy apart is the joblessness in the recovery. Things have improved but the jobless rate remains unfortunately high. What happens with the for lows and jobless rate in this country . Its going to make it harder to bring down the unemployment rate. In part because of how much cutting theres been and now were going to see some at several levels. We dont know for sure. But this is the reason to be more pessimistic. You mentioned the possibility of a bigger deal down the road. I mean how likely is that . Oh, well eventually were going to have to solve our deficit, right . We dont have any choice about that. And we promised ourselves more deficits than were ll to pay for. Were going to have to solve that. Eventually we night to and as a result either were going to get a big deal or have big problems. Thank you very much. There are new concerns this morning about the extent of the leaks at the Hanford Nuclear reservation in washington state. Six underground storage tanks are leaking toxic and radioactive waste material. Just last week state officials said only one tank was leaking. They say theres no Medial Health risk. Hanford is nations most contaminated nuclear site. The pentagon has grounded its new fleet of 51 f35 fighter jets is after a crack was found in the engine blade of one plane. All of the planes are being tested at the time. None were being used in combat. Its the pentagons most sophisticated aircraft system and the most expensive, costing almost 4 4 billion. The first ladys efforts to encourage young people to exercise got some support from jimmy fallon. He teamed up with the first lady. There you see it to perform the evolution of mom dancing. Fallon asked mrs. Obama if she would consider running on the president ial ticket with Hillary Clinton in 2016. You might know the participants in the Oscar Pistorius trial even better than we knew because theres so many ways to learn about them. There was no internet no blogs. Reporter despite the difference in the countries, ford says the trials will be similar as well. The South African Justice System not terribly different from the United States Justice System. We just saw a bail trial. He got bail. O. J. Did not. The defense for oscar was it was an accident. The defense for o. J. Was it wasnt me, it was somebody else. Simpson himself jumped into the controversy this week sucking that South African police, quote, have it in for pistorius. There are differences in the way this case will be tried before a single judge no jury but there are many more similarities and joining us now on the phone from miami is defense taern attorney alan dershowitz. I dont think theres any similarities whatsoever and the media is creating a false analogy analogy. In that case it was a who dub it. It was a question of whether he was the defendant. If he did it he did it maliciously. Here it has nothing in common. The question is did he do it purposely or did he do it unintentionally. Why do you think mr. Dershowitz, why do you think your old client is speaking out on this . I have no comment on o. J. And why hes speaking out. Its very unfair and very unfair to the public to make these kinds of comparisons. This is a very very different kind of case and theish issue here is whether or not his lawyer did the right thing, for example, by putting forth an affidavit that got him bail. Remember pistorius is a sprinter and this is a marathon. He may have won the sprint by getting bail and putting in that affidavit, but the question is when that marathon when he has to cross the line in the marathon, the question is will that affidavit help him or hurt him. If the affidavit is inconsistent with the forensics, this is going to hurt him down the line. Youre going to misinform the public as often happens in these kinds of celebrity cases. These cases have nothing in common, so just stop it. I think what people are struck by, youve about got a lead investigate never this case pistoriuss case who it turns out has murder charges against him. Even that has nothing in common. Mark furman is now the darling of fox news. Hes a hero. Hes a guy whos a racist and a big bigot who looks like a bungling fool. Theres no criminal alt. The most important different is here you have a judge and there you had a jury. In a jury case you make very different kind of arguments. In a judge case you argue kind of rationally carefully in a calculated way. In a jury case you apply to the emotional. You appeal to the emotional. Even though this is a judge case, mr. Dershowitz what do you think it will be . I have no idea. If it turns out that the trajectory of the bullets are different with the story, if it furns out that the other aspect os testify case what was in her body wrrks the bullets hit her wrrks she was sitting at the time. He has to be slulg certain that his story was completely true if hes going submit that affidavit, other weiss hes going to have to admit he was on bail all that time and it will be a knife that cuts both ways. So why is the government doing this mellody . There are three reasons but the big one, of course, is money. They say over ten years theyll save about billion dollars. 120 mill dollars in the first year alone. The second reason security. In 2011 440,000 checks were lost or stolen. 70 million worth of money was fraud yenltly endorsed on those checks. So thats a bad thing. Lastly, convenience. Seniors wont have to go to the banks to make deposits. They woerjts have to go to Check Cashing places. Theyll save money in that regard as well. There are a lot of seniors who are not tech savvy. 45 dont have computers. Its a number its true. A lot of people are comfortable with a paper check. Theres no question. I thought the way the government writes about this is really interesting. They say if you dont make the selection to electronic payment, you will not be in compliance with the law. Now, there are some exceptions. One is if you were born br 1921 you will continue to receive a paper check and you can apply for an exemption if you have some form of Mental Illness or you live in a very rural area but theyre only basically allowing about 20 of those exemptions. Theres a debit card for those who dont have a bank account. How did the Government Land on the decision to do the debit card and how did they choose the money behind it. The debit card is like an atm. Its something that most of us absolutely understand. Its super is. Its called the direct express mastercard. They use mastercard because its accepted anywhere. So thats one of the reasons they selected them. Very low fees. I checked. Very reasonable transferring money, things like that. 90 cents to take money out your first transfer or money taken out is for free. So they tried to make it super simple in the way that we already understand. You receive the debit card and it automatically reloads every singling month. Mellody tlrks are six days left before the deadline. What do o people need to do now . First thing, youve got make an elective. Youve got to decide if youre going do direct dpos or go a d a debit card. If you need to go that way, you need to go online and youre going to need some federal numbers on your check to put into the system to verify that its you. Sol thats first and foremost. Secondly tell your family what youre i dont totally be aware of fraudsters. Theyre going to come out of the woodwork on this one. If you get any inbound phone calls, inbound computer solicitations, do not respond. Do not give anyone your personal information because theyre fishing for that information and that will be very bad. And last but not least, after you make the elective doublecheck it and make sure the money actually got deposited. Id be very vigilant the first few months to make sure there are no glitches. They compared nonmedication forms of treatment for arthritis. Even if you have osteoarthritis and youre exercising it might be painful to do that in the first place. Exactly. So many people avoid exercise for that reason because it causes pain at first, but in the long run it actually reduces pain. It improves flexnt and joint motion and more importantly it keeps the tishes around the joints healthy and thats what cuts down on injury. Whats different. We hear about Rheumatoid Arthritis as well. Osteoarthritis is usual wear and tear of the joins. Its surrounded by cartilage and allows the bones to move against each owithout friction. In osteoarthritis that cartilage becomes stiff, damaged, and worn down and theres a great deal of friction as the bones move over each other which causes swelling and pain. Which is the opposite of something we say. Water exercise is good. Theyve decided thats the ideal exercise. Why . Its the lowest. You can move and strengthen the joints without putting pressure on them and thats really ideal. What are some of the other exercises they recommend . Strengthening exercises are important. Things like squats and free weights can strengthen the muscles around the joints that keeps pressure off the joints and prevents injury and dislocation and finally its good to be in good cardiovascular health. The nice thing about a tamale is you can basically fill it with anything, from savory to sbeet.
