Three days of fighting killed more than 100 people in kiev. The countrys president says this morning he agreed to loosen his grip on power. Heres a live look at Independence Square and negotiators worked all night to reach an agreement. Some of ukraines opposition leaders signed the deal but it may not be enough for the protesters. Holly williams is in kiev where some opponents are demanding more immediate changes. Holly, good morning. Reporter good morning, charlie and norah. Viktor yanukovych has agreed to hold elections later this year and form an interim coalition government, but thats not enough for his opponents. There were scuffles this morning in ukraines parliament as opposition members called for snap president ial elections, and the protester here in kievs Independence Square say they will stay put until the president is removed from power. In yesterdays deadly clashes, dozens of policemen were captured by protesters. Where are you taking them . Where are you taking them . Negotiators secured their release, but last night, a mob of angry demonstrators tried to stop them from being handed over. This woman said she wanted the policeman to be held hostage until protesters arrested by the authorities are also released. After priests intervened the policemen were eventually allowed to go free. [ explosion ] the demonstrators are irate after the worst bloodshed since these protests began three months ago. In yesterdays chaotic fighting police cut down the demonstrators with live ammunition, leaving city streets smeared with blood. Some of the protesters also fought with firearms. Others held rocks and molotov cocktails. Many of the injured were dragged to a makeshift hospital in the lobby of a nearby hotel. They were Bullet Wounds they were killed with to the head. Reporter but at least 77 people couldnt be saved, and some here put the figure much higher. These protests began peacefully back in november. The demonstrators accuse ukraines leaders of being corrupt, increasingly dictatorial and too close to russia. But many ukrainians now fear their country could be on the brink of civil war. The government is resolved to regain control, and a once Peaceful Protesters have become armed revolutionaries [ gunfire ] who have seen their comrades die and are more determined than ever to remove ukraines leaders from power. The state department is warning americans against traveling to ukraine. Secretary of state john kerry says he feels anger and anguish after yesterdays deadly violence. The white house is aware of this announcement of a preliminary deal to end the bloodshed in the streets of kiev but is withholding comment. Senior white house officials tell us the president will have something to say about this later on today. The Obama Administration is still threatening the Ukrainian Government with tougher economic sanctions if the bloodshed does not end, and it is waiting to see just how enthusiastically this deal will be embraced by the besieged government of Viktor Yanukovych and the protesters in the streets seeking his immediate ouster. The violence has continued all week, even after a truce on wednesday. That accounts for part of the white house caution. The difference now is bigger players are involved. Theres a russian envoy thats been a part of the negotiations and president obama spoke by phone to german chancellor angela merkel. The e. U. Has also been involved and germany, of course is a big player in the european union. For the second time this week Vice President joe biden spent more than an hour on the telephone with yanukovych urging him to pull back Security Forces specifically paramilitary groups and snipers. Responsible for much of the bloodshed. The deal announced would call for a constitutional referendum in september and new president ial elections in december. The white house wants to see if the opposition will take that and if yanukovych government will enforce the deal. Snow and crashes closed a minnesota interstate heading to iowa this morning and its also snowing heavily in wisconsin and northern michigan. And a line of thunderstorms is raising fears of flooding. And sfo, and seatac, pilots who fly passenger planes are required to get at least 10 hours of rest between shifts, but those rules do not apply to pilots of cargo planes. Just over an hour before this plane flew into a hillside and burst into flames near birmingham alabama, in august the two pilots killed in the crash were complaining about fatigue. The cockpit voice recorder captured captain beale jr. Saying, it should be one level of safety for everybody. First officer shannon fanning said it should be across the board, whether you are flying passengers or cargo, or, you know, a box of chocolates at night. She later said when my alarm went off, i mean im thinking im so tired. Rest time for cargo pilots was front and center at this National Transportation and safety Board Hearing on the crash. U. P. S. Insists the two pilots killed in the crash would have met federal rest requirements. Captain john snyder works for u. P. S. He says the companys pilots should call in if theyre too tired to fly. I feel we have a very robust and multilayered fatigue program. There is absolutely no reason why crew members shouldnt call in fatigued. Reporter after a regional jet crashed near buffalo, new york, five years ago, killing 51 people, the federal Aviation Administration issued new rules aimed at ensuring pilots get enough rest before duty. But those guidelines do not apply to cargo pilots. The faa says the rules would have cost Cargo Companies too much money. Captain Chesley Sullenberger is a cbs news safety expert. He said the rest rules should apply to every commercial pilot, no matter who or what is on board. What we need and still dont have in this country is one level of safety across commercial aviation. The American People deserve and expect that to be the case, and right now, its not. Reporter in fact there is a bill pending before congress now, the safe skies act, that would require cargo pilots to get just as much rest as passenger pilots. Charlie and norah . His attackers, luis sanchez and marvin norwood, were sentenced to prison thursday for the 2011 attack on brian stow. The San Francisco giants fan is now brain damaged and disabled. Stows father testified thursday but sanchez smirked as the judge addressed the men. He was blue by the time a group of Good Samaritans gathered to help his aunt. A photographer from the miami herald was in that crowd. These are his pictures. Pamela cradles her in nephew sebastian and gives him a round of cpr on the side of the dolphin expressway. Beside her, lucia gagoy who had given the 5monthold mouthtomouth five minutes before. Al diaz, a photographer for the miami herald captured the heartbreaking images. I look up, and a woman pops out of the car and starts screaming, my baby cant breathe. My baby cant breathe. Call 911. Reporter diaz was driving on the expressway and pulled over when he saw the commotion. I ran out in traffic, tried to slow traffic down asking looking for help someone that would know cpr. So thats when lucia gadoy popped out of her car. Reporter she was able to resuscitate sebastian, but moments later, he stopped breathing. Gadoy and a Police Officer sprang back into action. I wasnt thinking, really. I just hold the baby like if it was my baby and i did what i thought i would do if my baby wasnt in that situation. Reporter gadoy and roseo stood alongside First Responders making sure sebastian was safe. The hero is lucia and the babys aunt. Im not a lee roshe ro. I just did what you would have done. He joins us ahead. We have a story we first brought you earlier this eck would week. Two movie scams defraughtded 160 investors. Ben tracy has been on this story for month, even meeting undercover this past december with two different film producers pitching some of the risky investments, and is with us again from los angeles with the new developments. Good morning ben. Reporter charlie, norah gayle, good morning. We should mention the people seen in the undercover video are not among those indicted but the 20count indictment does detail one of two other cases against other filmmakers in los angeles that the fbi says was coldcalling on unsuspecting investors all over the country and stealing their money through lies. The movie was called the smuggler. It was supposedly going to star john cusack and joaquin phoenix. Investors were told it was one of the safest and surest investments they could make. The only problem . The fbi says it was all a lie. The people thought they were investing in the making of the movie, and in reality, they were funding the criminals lifestyle. Reporter this was straight up fraud . Straight up fraud. Reporter one indictment says these filmmakers devised, participated in, and executed a scheme to defraud victims, that they coldcalled individuals across the United States and that they would provide false and misleading information to get investors money. 64yearold ran shortkoff was one of those arrested. He was in charge of finding the investors and getting their money to invest in the movie. Reporter it was also executive producer at a Company Called big sky Motion Pictures. So in your opinion, was he ever a legitimate filmmaker, or was he a guy out looking to make money . A guy looking out for himself, purely to make money. Reporter joel kraft says he sold thousands of investor names to him and big sky. How many investors do you believe he had . I would say several hundred investors invested in big sky. Reporter do you know of any investor of his that ever got money back . No. Reporter kraft was indicted in 2011 for selling telemarketing leads to Production Companies that defrauded investors. He also says he trained this woman, kara kidwell, to handle investors. With hidden cameras, we spotted her trying to get a cbs news producer to invest 1,000 in her own production, a horror film called the animal among us. But the project you have do most of the investors get a return . Yes. What do you mean youre leaving me . Reporter kidwell, who has not been indicted, told us she helped produce what love is starring cuba gooding jr. , released in 2007. She said investors doubled their return. All of a sudden the money started coming in and everybody got really quiet, really happy, wanted champagne glasses on the red carpet premier. Reporter hi im ben tracy from cbs news. Investors told us they never saw a dime of a return from what love is. Are you aware that big sky Motion Pictures in spring break 83 productions have several cease and desist orders against them for soliciting these kinds of investments . No, i dont believe they do. Reporter is it possible that she did not know what she was doing . No, she knew exactly what she was doing. Reporter when she tells us that investors made money on the movie, she was selling investments for, and she has no knowledge of cease and desist orders against big sky. Thats a lie. Whats the most i could make . Its a moderate 12 . Reporter we also learned this man Gene Richards is gino kobanis. He wanted us to invest 30,000 in a film called corbins list. Since the story aired fuse filmmakers have told cbs news that he has been involved in many movie and Television Investment schemes. Koba kobais promised our producer a big return. What is the movie loss . Will i get anything back . Yeah youll double your money. You say i can meet ray liotta . Would you arrange for that . Yes, absolutely. Reporter a representative for ray liotta told cbs news that liotta is, quote, most certainly not connected to this film, nor has he ever heard anything of this project. The fbi says these scammers are living the high life with other peoples money. Weve had subjects in these types of cases that have had rolls royces and bentleys that lived in hollywood hills, that dined at chateau monmont. And all by the scams. The six people they indicted face 20 years in prison if convicted, and they have several other open cases against people who are running the movie investment schemes. Charlie, norah, gayle . You know, it didnt translate into the success that we wanted. What did you mean when you said this has become a witchhunt . Well i think when youre in the middle of competition, youre looking for things that may have led to that. You know, our teams want to be clear, they have a couple of more events to compete in in sochi, so we want to make sure there are advantages as possible. And theres only so many things can you do in the middle of competition. You cant train more. You cant change altitude. What you can do, make a switch. Thats perfectly up to a coach. Weve seen that with teams as we have, you know if the quarterback is not doing well you change quarterbacks. Sometimes you try a new color jersey. Sometimes you try a new uniform. We went from a new under armour to an old, and, of course did. And it still didnt make a difference. Well, not yet. If it wasnt the suit what was it, you think, in terms of this olympic performance . You know, i think, first of all, you have u. S. Speedskating you know, the president there, mike plante, the executive director ted morris, scott mack blan blackman, and mikes been there nine month, ted there six months. So its a relatively new organization. I think what youre going to see is a real Energy Around speedskating, obviously its become a big story. I think america has a right to be on the podium when it comes to speedskating. You signed a new contract. What would you do differently going into the olympics if you knew these possibilities might be out there, that some people might blame the suit . Well, you have to realize, these are mostly volunteerbased organizations. The guys mike plante isnt full time on u. S. Speedskateing. He runs the Atlanta Braves there. So the time he puts in in working with speedskating are these things where we could help them. I mean, we have communications. We have p. R. We have marketing. We have again, the ability we spent two years in development with these suits. We delivered eded final prototypes in november. So where would we be involved is we probably would have taken a more proactive role in how the athletes will get on them how theyll be comfortable, and whole time we had athletes quoting about the suits and training, and as far as we knew we were in good shape. Theres a more proactive role our company could take. Look we believe well accept the fact that we tried something and our athletes didnt win. You know, we remain patriots first. This is our waving american flags yelling go, go, go. Go usa. What is a new deal kevin . Are there not bruised feelings on your part considering that under armour was thrown under the bus . The current contract would expire in the next 30 days or so. Were looking at this and saying, i think there could be no better story, and frankly nothing more american, to be honest with you, than getting knocked down. We got beat up a little bit last week. And speedskating is obviously getting beaten up. What we dont do is we dont retreat. We dust ourselves up and we come back bigger better stronger than we ever were before. But this morning another group of policemen defected and came to independent square to join the protesters in their struggle against the government. We have seen the demonstrators building new barricades today and they are clearly preparing for more violence, charlie, norah, and gayle . Lets begin with ukraine because the worlds focus is on it. What is your assessment . If we step back i think it has a lot of the same looks of the collapse of the former soviet union or the arab spring and at first the government tends to resist it and then say it wont change, and then it hits a Tipping Point and the president may be being isolated now, and so i think things are in play and thats what matters. What do we do and europe do . Thats the milliondollar question. This is Something Different from egypt, because you have russia and putin clearly with hard opinions on this and we need to navigate this one carefully but we should not support the movement. I think we should be firm in our values, and communicating that. The pictures are disturbing when you look at them when you look at the pictures, and people are thinking what is going on there. Could you beliefly explain why its important and why we should care about this . We should care because its a movement trying to move a country in a different direction and the direction they are trying to move is positive. On the other hand if we focus all the closeups on the people who have been killed 70 some people have been killed this week, and that is small compared to the number killed in syria. And it looks bigger than it is and we can overreact. And its a power play by russia in some ways too. Lets turn to afghanistan, which you know so well. We still have 30,000 troops in afghanistan, and the current president there refused to sign an agreement, and he has freed more than 60 prisoners, what do you make of that . I think its domestic politics, afghanistans domestic politics, and president karzai is in the last part of an extended term as president , and he becomes a lame duck the day the agreement is signed and he is trying to maintain handles on this as long as possible and his successor, almost anybody will move to sign that. Vice President Biden called for almost a total with draw and there is talk among secretary hagel to leave 9000 troops there. Are you concerned afghanistan will turn into an iraq if we totally pull out troops . I am. I am biassed about afghanistan and i admit that up front. I think what afghanistan needs is a demonstration of friendship and partnership, and that doesnt mean thousands of troops but some presence that reassures them unlike when we walked away we would not do that and we would be there to help them develop. Is what happened in iraq since american troops left a forecast of what would happen in afghanistan . I think it should be a warning. No two situations are exactly the same. I think we should take a clear lesson from what happened in iraq. What happens in afghanistan if american troops do leave and there is no agreement . Will it become a haven for terrorism . I think there is every possibility that would occur. I dont think the taliban are Strong Enough to sweep in and take a unified afghanistan. I think its more likely it would break into areas of conflict and i think the Afghan Government would be able to maintain control over much of the country for quite a while, but the wildcard would be what would pakistan do and what would irans role be and then they can start to bring in the south into the government. The latest public poll for the first time Shows Americans in the country think it was mistake to get involved militarily. How much does Public Opinion factor into the conflicts . I think its the center of gravity, and it determines whether you can do something and how long you can do it. I think we need to think about it. When i used to talk to the chief of staff in the Pakistani Army he used to talk about every operation he wanted to do he had to decide whether he had enough public support to do the next step. I think we could do a better job of marshaling the Public Opinion, and explaining why we are in afghanistan and why it matters, because its hard to ask American Families to let their family members go for many years unless we reinforce the importance of it. This book of yours, in the remarkable light you lit from west point to the battlefield, and what you did in meeting men and women in combat what is the most important lesson you have learned . I think its about leading. Leading is not about the individual. Its about creating a team that does things. I have never seen anything in my life go well that i did alone. And every time i got to be part of a team and when i contributed to making the team better thats when i teach leadership at yale now, and the firm that i cofounded is focused on leadership. But figure skating judging has tried to reform itself and its a technical and complicated issue now, and they judge which side of the skate you land on and its more of an arithmetic than the overall aesthetic look at the program and the difficulty of the program, so there are arguments as to which of the two skaters should have won. When you go there you realize how wonderful the people are. You have been there. When you go there it gets into your blood. I call it harlem haiti. Its a place where we can all come together and theres a tool that is not just money, but supporting people and giving them jobs and education, and vocational education, and for me, whether its Parson School design and parson has come down with me because we are starting a Vocational School down there right now, so for me the whole world of design and creativity whether its the streets of new york or haiti or bali its an enormous inspiration to me as a designer.
