Secretary of state john kerry is in jerusalem to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu one day after negotiating a deal with russia regarding syrias chemical weapons stock piles. Margaret brennan reports from geneva. Were finished. Reporter twoandahalf days of marathon talks yielded a deal between secretary of state kerry and his russian counterpart. The world will now expect the assad regime to live up to its public commitments. And as i said at the outset of these negotiations, there can be no games, no room for avoidance or anything less than full compliance by the assad regime. Reporter the Syrian Government must submit details of its chemical arsenal within one week. Allow International Inspections by november. And destroy all chemical weapons material by the first half of 2014. Both countries agreed there will be consequences if the assad regime fails to comply enforcedded in part through a u. N. Resolution but it wasnt specified what those consequences will be. But could include military action or sanctions. President obama said saturday that if diplomacy faulters, the threat of force remains. But westernbacked rebels struggling to topple the regime were disappointed. They said the agreement lets assad off the hook. The u. S. Will continue funneling weapons to those rebels while it also tries to disarm assad in the middle of that war zone. Its a challenge the u. S. And its partners must still figure out. And theres more talking to do. Secretary kerry will consult next with plans with u. K. And saudi arabia to keep the pressure on assad to hand over his chemical weapons. For sunday morning, this is Margaret Brennan in geneva. Osgood the area of colorado inundated by flood waters has now grown to a size nearly equal to the state of connecticut. Four people are now confirmed dead, and hundreds in the flood zone havent been heard from. More than 1700 have been evacuated. Mexico is threatened by Tropical Weather on both coasts. Tropical storm manuel in the Pacific Ocean is expected to move inland this morning. Hurricane ingrid, in the gulf coast, is forecast to strike early monday. 60 years ago today, a bomb planted by white supremists exploded outside the 16th Baptist Church in birmingham alabama killing four girls. Yesterday people gathered in the city to dedicate a sculpture honoring those young victims. Its things like this one that won texas and and m quarterback the Heisman Trophy last year. Besides throwing four five touchdowns he couldnt hold by number one alabama as the crimson tide rolled over his aggies 4942. Now for todays weather. Scattered thunderstorms will move through colorado and new mexico with the potential for still more flooding. Rain will also dampen the great lakes and portions of the south while the northeast will enjoy sunny skies. In the week ahead, scattered showers across much of the country with a warming trend in the southeast and just plain old hot in the southwest. It was your backyard. This was my backyard literally. Osgood ahead, a rockefeller, osgood glock is a brand name of a handgun. Its a name that provokes strong reaction among gun owners and gun opponents both. And at the risk of offending both groups this morning we want to examine the roots of its popularity. Our cover story is reported now by Anthony Mason. Reporter it may be the best known firearm brand in the world. Glock. The name alone says gun. You get yourself a glock. Leave that nickelplated sissy alone. Reporter hollywood has glammized it and given it a starring role. You cant take my glock. Reporter in the 30 years since it was invented, the glock has become a favorite of both law enforcement, like the f. B. I. , and outlaw dictator. When Saddam Hussein was found in his hideout in 2003 he was carrying a glock. Glock has become more than a successful gun. Its become cool. Its become cool. Its become synonymous with that article of commerce, with the handgun. Reporter paul barrett is the author of a biography of the firearm called glock the rise of americas gun. We met him at the show in las vegas. The audience here at this show is principally gun dealers. Thats correct. You have people who are involved in all aspects of selling and marketing guns and also all the accoutrements. Reporter how big a presence is glock on the floor now . No handgun manufacturer has a bigger presence. It is the biggest and most influential. Twothirds of all american Police Departments use the glock. Reporter how did an austrian gun eclipse brands like colt and smith wesson to become an American Icon . The weapon is is named for the man who created it in 1982 for the austrian army. Glock was an obscure engineer. He ran a radiator factory during the day. Reporter did he have any experience making guns . None. Zero. That was his true revenge. Reporter glock didnt try to modify existing models. He created a new one. His design had a plastic frame making it lighter than other handguns. And had only 34 components. About half of most other makers. That made the gun easier to manufacture and less likely to malfunction. Glock, now 84, is an elusive figure who rarely gives interviews. This video of glocks u. S. Plant in georgia was shot by 60 minutes in 2002. But journalists rarely get inside. Glock is a secretive company. Very secretive. Still owned by the family. Reporter glock did not respond to repeated calls for this report, and the company did not cooperate with barretts book. They didnt even want you here at the show . Not only did they not want me here but after i got my credentials from the sponsor and trade association, glock leaned on that trade association to rescind my credentials. So they actually basically tried to have me barred. Reporter but glocks success speaks for itself. In less than a decade, glock was shipping 120,000 handguns a year to the u. S. Many to Police Departments. But in the early 1980s, they were beginning to feel the criminals had them outgunned with semiautomatic pistols. Americas Police Departments were mostly armed with sixshot revolvers which is 19th century technology. Reporter cameron hopkins, a free lance firearms journalist, showed how long it could take to get off 18 shots with a revolver. And the time . Reporter 2 2 70. Is that what im looking . Now well do a glock with 18 rounds. Reporter the glock was nearly four times faster. 5. 7 seconds. Glock enticed Police Departments with offers of free training. But at the same time the gun had to work. Absolutely, yes. And it does. A glock is a lawn mower. As far as the liability goes, i mean, it just always goes bang. Reporter hopkins demonstrated that with me. The beauty of a glock, anthony, is how simple it is. Reporter after a fiveminute training session. You have to insert the magazine. Pull it until it locks in place. Clip it in. Hit it. Reporter every shot hit the target. Hit hit and thats your first time. I mean you never fired a glock before. Look at that. I mean thats all dead center. Reporter but that ease of use has made glock itself a target of guncontrol advocates. Jared loftner in his attempt to assassinate congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in dueson used a glock. He even featured the weapon on his myspace page. Six people died in that shooting. 315 and 314 for a shooting in front of the theaters. Reporter and in 2012 james holmes opened fire in a crowded Movie Theater in aurora, colorado. Also using a glock. 12 people died in that shooting. The government keeps lists of weapons recovered at crime scenes. But paul barrett says. If you look at those lists, to date, theres still not evidence that the glock is instinct i havey used more than other guns. In fact it tends not to show up at the top of those lis. The notion that every gangster in every city is Walking Around with a glock just isnt true. Police, freeze put your hands in the air. Reporter but the glocks image, both good and bad, has in many ways been made by the movies. This is our vault. This is actually. We call this our show vault because we try to keep one of each type of firearm. Reporter Rick Washburn is a new york prop man who provides weapons to film makers like the ones seen in the bourne ultimatum. He sported recommending glocks in the 1980s. Youve had a role in the glocks success . I think ive had a big role in the glocks success. I think we recognized early on this was different because it was different it was exciting. Reporter for three decades now, other weapons makers have been playing catchup. They may have matched the glocks fire power, but they have yet to match its star power. When was the last time you heard something use the word naming another guns . No, its the glock. Osgood next, in his clutches. You can actually see the softness with our new comfort cushions. Walls separate people osgood is the purpose of makeup to completely makeover the woman applying it . Or simply make her look her best . One business woman has made a fortune by highlighting the second approach while also earning the admiration of our nancy giles. Whether its back stage at a fashion show or in front of a bathroom mirror, makeup is a simple part of many womens daily routine. Men arent going to buy makeup. Reporter few people have changed the face of a generation of women as much as bobby brown. My aesthetic and my style of beauty is to look like yourself or better. That style evolved very, very organically. Reporter brown is the Creative Force behind a cosmetics empire. She not only founded a company that is worth a reported 1 billion, shes also a bestselling author of beauty and lifestyle books and has done makeup for everyone from jill biden to brook shields to get this. Ive seen her at work on me. Ive been intrigued by bobby brown cosmetics since bobby herself gave me a makeover on live tv some years ago. I like to use on darker skin a bronze. Reporter even then her approach was revolutionary. Makeup that looked natural and was simple to use. For all shades of women. On the nose. Reporter those same ideas have continued to be an important part of bobby browns philosophy. We all want to look good and pretty. Some days we do and some days we dont. When i do someones makeup, its important to find not only colors that work for them and textures but makeup that works for their style. Reporter a formula brown has been working on for quite a long time. I remember being a very young girl, watching my mom put her makeup on to go out, you know, to the Grocery Store probably and then do her makeup on saturday night. My mother was very glamorous. She still is. I used to sit there and watch her and be in amazement. Reporter as a child she began experimenting with her mothers make be up stash on whoever or whatever was available. I made up my dolls. I made up my dogs. Reporter your dog. My dog. Reporter what did you put on your job. I put lip gloss on. Mass care a. Reporter bobbys fascination became an obsession. Leaving her with little time for anything else including her school work. By the time she was in high school, she thought about dropping out. I didnt know what i wanted to do with my life. My mother said pretend today is your birthday. You can do anything you want. What would you want to do i remember saying i would love to go a Big Department store in chicago and play with makeup. My mother said why you study makeup . Reporter she went to boss tons Emerson College creating her own major in theatrical make up. After graduation she moved to new york city and worked free lance. Her big break came when she was hired to do super model Naomi Campbells makeup for the cover of vogue. But she didnt like what she was seeing. It was white faces, red lips and i could not do makeup like that. I didnt think it made people look pretty. I wanted a lipstick that looks like lips. Reporter how did you create that . I would take a taupe pencil and cream blush and lip gloss or vaseline and make it myself. At the time lipstick on the market smelled bad. I wanted a lipstick that was not masked and not greasy, stayed on but looked like the color i wanted my lips to be. I thought, wow, people are going to want this. Reporter in 1991 brown changed the look of the cosmetics industry when she debuted a collection of ten lipsticks for women of all complex ons in new york city. She hoped to sell 100 in a month. She sold 100 the first day. With zero advertising, word of mouth made bobby brown a phenomenon, catching the eye and ear of an industry giant. I have no spies. It was just me. And i would walk through the store. Whats selling . People talked about bobby brown. Bobby brown. What a great name. Thats when i said im going to meet bobby. Reporter leonard lawter, then the head of esteelauder set up a meeting. Here was a man that said youve done so well. Youre beating us in a lot of the stores. I would like to buy you. We were not for sale. I said to bobby, hey, look, women around the world want what you have. Everyone was saying heavy makeup. Glamor, glamor, glamor. Bobby was be as good as you can be but look yourself. Thats what bobby had. Reporter only four years after brown created those first lipsticks, estee lauder bought the company for a reported 74. 5 million. This is a beautiful place. Ank you. Reporter today bobbi brown retains Creative Control of her brand which has stores in some 60 different countries. Did youor think that that little hobby would turn into this incredible empire . Never in a million years. Never. Reporter at age 56 this working mother of three still holds true to the fundamental belief that made her a success. All women are beautiful. Really what beauty is to me is not looking like a super model. Its not looking like a barbi doll. Its about being comfortable in your own skin and knowing how to use makeup to make you look better. To enhance who you are. Reporter she certainly did it for me and at 61 , im no barbi doll. Since im tv with you, i wore. Oh, my, look at this. Osgood earth, wind and fire. And Ricky Gervais. ,,,,,, its sunday morning on cbs. And here again is charles osgood. Osgood earth, wind and fire had a very big hit with boogie wonderland back in 1979. And with the release of a new album this month, theyve determined to show that theyre still in the game. This morning they look back and ahead with tracy smith. For the record. Reporter in the 1970s, earth, wind and fire were not so much a band. But a kind of musical volcano spewing hit songs. Do you remember september reporter this one september, is is their most requested ever. Their music was the sound track to an entire generation of first dates and wedding receptions. And today that sound is is very much alive. When you guys first started out, how long did you think you would last . We were so young and just so ready to just. We were just going for it. Nt thinking about it. Just wanted to go. Reporter three of the groups original members Ralph Johnson, philip daily, and Verdine White have been together 41 years. We didnt know we were going to get paid. We just loved what we were doing. Didnt get paid . laughing . Reporter earth, wind and fire was the brain child of the drummer who founded the band in the late 60s. He enlisted his younger brother verdine to play bass, recruited Phillip Bailey as the colead singer, Ralph Johnson on drums. It was magic. It all looked like fun. But the work ethic was legendary. Practice sessions were held whenever needed. We rehearsed, you know, sometimes after concerts. We would rehearse after concerts. Reporter after concerts. Yes. Reporter when other bands are off partying or doing whatever, you guys would be back. Rehearsing. Just to figure certain things out. One more time. Reporter the old work ethic survives to this day. The fire is still there. But for a while it flickered. In 1983 after more than a dozen albums and six grammies, Maurice White decided that the band needed a break. It was a very uncomfortable period. Traumatic. Very traumatic. This is all we knew. This is all we had. When somebody kind of pulls that rug out, you know, youre like, now you have to rethink your whole program. Reporter so what did you do . You know what i did . I called a friend of mine who had a construction company. I went to install fire springallers. I worked on a construction sight. Then i worked at a stereo shop. Reporter doing what . Selling stereos which i was very comfortable with. Reporter the band reformed in the late 80s but was dealt another blow when Maurice White was diagnosed with parkinsons disease. Could you guys see the signs of parkinsons . Yeah, we could. It was, you know, it was a few years. You know, we walked down it together. It took a lot of courage for him to finally get to the toint of really even saying, you know, this is what it is. We were all hoping that it perhaps might be something else. Something that you might be able to be treated with this, that or the other. Reporter white quit touring in 1994. The one and only earth, wind and fire. Reporter he was with the band from 2000 when they were inducted into the Rocknroll Hall of fame. Standing ovation and all. Our visionary, our leader, Maurice White. Reporter but he has rarely appeared in public since. We invited him to be part of this story. He declined. Earth, wind and fire survived whites departure. They continued to tour successfully. In february 2009 they were one of the first musical groups invited to the obama white house. These days their tour schedule is packed. But the three original band mates, now in their early 60s. Im going to line this up. Reporter . Have learned how to, well, pace themselves. You see that shot, baby . Reporter Phillip Bailey never leaves for a tour without his golf clubs. This course at the Royal Links Golf Club in las vegas is one of his favorites. This course here is a course that they actually built in 1999. Its the replica of Saint Andrews where golf actually started. Reporter for someone who has only been playing a few years, hes not bad. Its allencompassing so you play golf and you play for a couple of hours. You feel like you went on a twohour vacation. Its kind of like meditation. Reporter and meditation along with some very practiced yoga moves is one way Verdine White. We dont get enough oxygen. Thats the problem. Reporter right now his band is much in demand but he doesnt take anything for granted. Once you become successful the first time, you always think you can go there. But you have to put the work into it. You know, you have to take the body blows. Youve got to stay from even when nothing is happening. You have to play every show. As as if its your last show. Reporter the show last month was a little bigger than most. The band chose to launch their new album appropriately called now, then and forever on the Home Shopping network. A concert in front of a few thousand in las vegas and maybe a million watching live at home. I cant hear you. Over here, let me hear you. Reporter h. S. N. Says in the first 90 minutes the band sold around 10,000 albums. I want to love you reporter if there was ever a signature sound, it might be been lead singer Phillip Baileys trademark falsetto. 40 years on he figured out how to keep hitting those high notes. What do you not do with your voice . Theres a certain beverage, soda beverage that i will not mention on camera that i cannot drink or else its just kryptonite. I open my mouth and it goes squeaking . Reporter he must be doing something right. hitting a loud high note . If anything, Phillip Baileys voice, like the band, is Even Stronger now. How much longer will you be doing this . As long as i can have that feeling of, you know, wow i get to do this. Ill always do it. [ cheers and applause ] [ voice on phone osgood coming up, would you buy a car from this man . [ chuckles ] yo, give it up, dude up high. Ok. Up high. Ok. High up high ok ok thats getting pretty old. Osgood it happened this week. The passing of a tv pitch man who never passed up on eyecatching opportunities to make a sale. Used cars and used trucks. Osgood the auto dealer died last sunday at his california ranch. You tell us. Youre the boss. You tell us how much you want to pay down and mowch you want to pay a month. If theres a way to do, were going to do it. Osgood calvin coolage worthington was born in 1920 and was a decorated bomber pilot during world war ii. After the war he bought his First Southern california car dealership. And refused up the tv sales campaigns that would make him famous. Cal worthington. If you need a better car. Reporter the stunts and animals and a catchy and insistent jingle. If you want to save some dough, see cal osgood cal would outsell any one and everyone. If you want to save some dough, come to cal, come to cal, come to cal reporter he even made it into the movies. Including a parody of his commercials in the 1988 movie beetlejuice. Come on down to see me, folks. Ill do anything to get your business. Osgood in a career spanning more than half a century he sold more than a million cars by his own count yet repeatedly. Reportedly didnt own one him sill. Whenever he needed to drive somewhere, he would bror owe one from his own lot. Cal worthington was 92. ,,,,, osgood a question whats in a name is no idle question for anyone born with a very famous one. Just ask the woman mo rocca track down. Reporter this was your backyard. This was my backyard literally. You know, in the winter we made huge snow sculptures. In the summer we had running races and did so manier salts. It was lovely. Reporter a good place to learn about gardening. Yes. My mother used to give me a little plot. Reporter ah, the life of a rockefeller. Come here. Come here. Reporter all a child could ever want or so it would seem. This is the place when i was two where they took one of my favorite pictures of me. I was seated on this bottom step but i was just kind of like this, reaching out. Reporter now what was the twoyearold Eileen Rockefeller saying in that picture . Hello, somebody. Come play with me. Reporter you could say its the theme of a new book by Eileen Rockefeller, a rare inside look at one of the countrys wealthiest and most powerful families. My great grandfather was john d. Rockefeller sr. Bless you. Reporter john d. Sr. Was the founder of standard oil and americas first billionaire. A number of hours throughout the week that i spend related to this bank are a great many. Reporter eileens father is David Rockefeller who ran chase manhattan bank. You write that being a rockefeller filled you with gratitude and anxiety. Yes. There are enormous opportunities and gifts, a huge abundance in being a rockefeller. And ironically all of us have also experienced scarcity. But its not scarcity of money. It was scarcity of attention, scarcity of time. With six children, less time to spend with each of us. Reporter when you were little, would you race up and down this hallway . No. We werent really allowed to. Reporter eileen, the youngest of six, says her parents were so busy being, well, rockefellers, that she never got enough time with them. Her older siblings often ignored her. Problems plenty of kids have, sure. But most of them dont have that name. The fear of roll call when you were a kid at school. Yeah. Eileen rockefeller. I wish i could have hidden under my desk. Each time that happened. Reporter and then there were the questions from other kids. They would ask things like, i dont know how much houses do you have . And then sometimes they would actually ask, how much money do you have. Reporter really . Yeah. Reporter thats amazing. Can i ask you as a journalist how much money do you have . I have no idea. I dont even count. Reporter is it more like Mega Millions . Im kidding you. Im joking with you. Im really kidding you. Get out of here. Reporter we did get out of there to the family compound in maine. Where we joined eileen and her father for a power glide. David rockefeller is now 98 years old. The last of his generation. And the trails were winding over now were laid out when . Right after world war i. He went driving every day. Reporter eileen says her father passed on a love of the outdoors. Seeing your children appreciate nature is something that youre very proud of. It gave me extra satisfaction to really go out and enjoy the woods and fields and finding the woods and be able to tell them a little bit about them. Reporter did he say beatles . Thats a part of the Family Tradition that eileen treasures. This is the beatles room. Room. Now, dont be scared. Some of them are big but they dont move any longer. Reporter her father has collected some 150,000 beettles during his life. Starting at age 9. Its a rockefeller sized collection all catalogued at his house north of new york city. These are like jurassic park. Arent they so beautiful. A year ago we put in a small, small labyrinth garden. Reporter eileens own house is on an estate in vermont. Its not too shabby. She and her husband paul raised two sons there adam and danny. She spends much of her time on philanthropy. One of her current causes is fighting global warming. There are some of the solar panels. Were looking at the back of them. I think we have another eight out in the field. Reporter many in her generation of rockefellers are busy giving away chunks of that family fortune. Eileen, you know a lot of people are going to be watching this saying, i wish i had her problems. Yes. Theres no question that the privileges have outweighed the responsibilities, the difficulties. Where i think i feel Common Ground with everybody watching is that we all suffer from something growing up. It doesnt matter if we have money or dont have money. And the net worth of our bank account is not nearly so important ultimately as the selfworth. Reporter her sons believe their mother has found her place in life. I think through process of writing these stories and the process of becoming comfortable sharing her own experiences, she has discovered who she is. And who she is not only as an individual but in relation to all of her siblings. Reporter her father seems to agree. How great is it that your daughter wrote this book . I think so too. Im very proud of her for that as well as many other things. Thank you, dad. Osgood coming up. I need a kidney. Osgood a wishful filled. ,,,,,, to prove the power of love. Steve hart Steve Hartman has an answer to that one. Reporter one way or another it had to end like this. Are you ready . Reporter one way or another Larry Swilling knew his wife jimmy sue would eventually be hospitalized with a failing kidney. He knew he would have tears. The only thing he didnt know is whether they would be happy or sad. When we first met larry a year ago he was desperately trying to rewrite his wifes final chapter. Im going to get you a kidney. Reporter since she needed a kidney and he had no shame on the matter. I dont care what people think. Reporter . Larry set out to find an organ donor on his own. I sure could use your kidney. Reporter never mind that most people wont give panhandlers their pocket change let alone their vital organs, larry at the age of 77 started walking all over his hometown of anderson South Carolina basically begging for a kidney. I had to do something. She said to me and i look after her. Reporter after 57 years of marriage their love is so palpable it practically melts you in your seat which is probably why after our first story aired, thousands of people called to offer their kidneys. Theres a mighty bunch of good people out there. Reporter more than 100 of that mighty bunch went through the testing to see if they were a match. And would you believe. Well, how are you doing . Reporter . One was. After a full year of searching, this past week Larry Swilling finally met his miracle. Shes a 41yearold retired Navy Lieutenant commander named kelly weaverling. That isnt allowed on television. Reporter one of the first things you learn when you talk to Ricky Gervais is not to take everything he says seriously. Although for a funny guy he can get pretty serious. Youre one of the most popular mainstream successful comics of your generation somehow. I think thats because if you do what you do and youre uncompromised, you dont need a focus group, and its not about me, something will come out that wasnt there before. The starspangled banner or rather an exact replica of the flag that flew over fort mchenry when it was under british bombardment 199 years ago this weekend. The turning point in the war of 1812. People are still trying to figure out what it all means to be an american, to be a citizen of this country. And the flag and the anthem come out of this conflict. Osgood director of education at the Maryland Historical society. A lot of things come out of the war of 1812 to help us find who we are as americans. I think the flag and the symbol became linked to the writing of the National Anthem and forth mchenry and the star spankalled banner. Osgood the actual banner is on display at a place of honor in the National Museum of history in washington. Snippets were given away as souvenirs to war of 1812 veterans. This summer a team of printers took on the task of not only recreating the flag but did it using the same painstaking process as the original flag maker, mary pickersgill. She is one of those forgotten heroes of the united states. She is a fascinating woman. She was in her mid 30s when she made the starspangled banner flag. She completed it in six weeks. Thats really a feat. This is a huge flag. It took an awful lot of sewing. She would have been using candles. Osgood back then she had only a handful of people to help her. This project took nearly 200 volunteers sewing for six weeks straight all by hand just as pickersgill did. No small feet given the flags size, 42x30 feet. We estimated there were 150,000 stitches. That, i think, now is a low estimate. Reporter the banners 15 bright stars are tilted. No one seems to know exactly why. Each of them two feet wide requiring 1300 stitches apiece. The stars on the background. Reporter and this woman was in charge of that talented task. We dont see it as work at all. Keep going. I the name of the project is stitching history. Reporter this summer the Historical Society were invited to pitch in with a stick. Eightyearold was among them. Everybody forgot mary pickersgill. I want everybody to remember that she made the starspangled banner. O say can you see osgood the words of the star spangled banner was raised in triumph at the end of the perilous fight, a battle watched over the ram parts by Francis Scott key who was aboard a british ship. Inspired by what you sea, he wrote the words to the song that has since become our National Anthem. And so the National Anthem came together once more yesterday. And the replica was raised in all its glory over baltimores forth mchenry. Our flag is still there. And now we proudly hail Bob Scheiffer in washington to find out whats ahead on face the nation.
