Captioning funded by cbs this is the cbs morning news for april 2nd, 2014. Good morning. Good to be with you. Im annemarie green. A powerful earthquake struck off the coast of northern chile last night, killing at least five people. Well, this morning it appears there has not been a significant number of injuries or major damage. The magnitude 8. 2 quake set off a small tsunami that forced evacuations along chiles entire pacific coast. The quake was felt in nearby peru, bolivia, and followed at least 20 aftershocks. The quake caused landslides that blocked roads and several businesses caught fire. And some 300 inmates escaped from a womens prison. Chile is one of the most earthquakeprone places. They say this is the latest in the past two weeks and may be a precursor to larger event. We expect another 8. 8, 8. 9 earthquake sometime in the future. It could be tomorrow or in a few years. We do not know when its going to occur. The key here is this magnitude 8. 2 is not the large one expected for this area. Were expecting a potentially even larger earthquake. Now, following the quake off chile, a tsunami advisory was issued for hawaii. A tsunami is not expected to hit the island, but rough surf could pose a danger to swimmers and boaters. General motors Ceo Mary Barra returns to capitol hill today to face more questions about a faulty ignition switch linked to 13 deaths. During testimony yesterday barra admitted the decision not to fix the problem because of cost was disturbing. Susan mcginnnis is in washington. Susan, good morning. Annemarie, good morning. You know, that question about cost playing a role in gms decision not do this recall and many other questions, mary barra was not up there defending gm but she really spent her time acknowledging what lawmakers were saying, sort of agreeing with them, deflecting the answer saying shes awaiting the results of a gm investigation. She pretty much was angered, too, and would like answers. It was a frustrating day. Today could bring more of the same from a senate panel. General motors Ceo Mary Barra returns to the hot seat today, this time senators will grill her about the automakers deadly car defect. Democratic senator Edward Markey of massachusetts spoke out alongside victims relatives tuesday. We now know that the difference between this switch and one that would have worked properly was life or death. Barra told a house subcommittee tuesday she didnt know why it took her company more than ten years to recall 2. 6 million cars. Those vehicles have faulty ignition switches that could suddenly shut down car engines, disabling power steering, power bags, seat belts, and air bags. She placed Greater Transparency going forward. If we know there is a defelt on our vehicles, we do not look at the costs associated with it. We look at the speed with which we can issue. David friedmann will also testify again today. Hes already told lawmakers nhtsa didnt launch an investigation earlier because gm failed to disclose the fact that they failed to cover the specifications. Gm says it will start replacing defective switches in cars next week. Now, because of gms bankruptcy filing, it could be legally shielded from having to compensate victims of these crashes, but in a sign that it might, gm has hired a lawyer that set up the Compensation Plan for the victims of the marathon bombing in boston. Yesterday afternoon the mr. Obama said the plan isnt perfect, but its doing the job. Its working.
