We begin with the latest on the new jersey traffic jam scandal disrupting the administration of governor Chris Christie. Federal prosecutors have begun a preliminary investigation as has the state assembly, and 60 jersey residents have filed a federal Class Action Lawsuit against christie and the state. Christie says he knew nothing about the lane closings into the George Washington bridge last september. The closures led to major delays on what is the busiest bridge in the world. The scandal threatens to undermine possible president ial aspirations governor Chris Christie may have. At a press conference yesterday he was asked if he would consider resigning after what happened. Thats a crazy question, maam. Im telling you i had nothing to do with this. Thousands more internal documents related to the scandal are scheduled to be released today. Governor christie said he knew nothing about this socalled political payback that caused massive gridlock for several days. One thing he knows for sure is that he says hes sorry. I come out here today to apologize to the people of new jersey. New jersey governor Chris Christie apologized dozens of times during a nearly twohour news conference. He says hes embarrassed some of his most trusted aides allegedly constructed a fourday traffic jam on the approach to the George Washington bridge in new jersey. A person close to me betrayed me. Reporter he fired his deputy chief of staff Bridget Anne Kelly who sent an email to a christie associate saying time for some traffic problems in fort lee. Kelly reportedly targeted tort leighs mayor because he refused to endorse christie during last years election. The governor traveled to fort lee to apologize to mayor mark sokolich. Hes taken a big step. But at least 60 new jersey residents have filed a lawsuit against the governor and the state claiming the deliberate action made them late for work. The state assembly and the u. S. Attorneys office are investigating the incident. Another christie associate allegedly involved was david wildstein. This morning a state of emergency has been declared in nine West Virginia counties where the water supply has been contaminated by a chemical spill. At least 100,000 customers in and around the capital charleston has v been told not to use their tap water. The water contamination is affecting the government, businesses, and schools. Susan mcginnis has our report. The chemical leaked from a holding tank at freedom industries. The spill happened about a mile north of the largest Water Treatment plant in West Virginia. West virginia American Water issued a warning. Customers should not use this water for any purpose. Really, the only acceptable use of this water is sanitation use, that is, flushing toilets. You shouldnt bathe in it. You shouldnt drink it. The chemical is used to clean coal. There are unconfirmed reports that as many as 5,000 gallons leaked into the elk river yesterday. There are no immediate reports of people getting sick. The chemical smells like licorice and can cause eye irritation and digestive and breathing trouble. Its clear that its migrated from the Treatment Plant through the water into the customers taps. Therefore because we dont know a lot about the product and were still, you know, sampling and looking at concentrations, its out of an abundance of caution, were advising our customers again, do not use the water. The emergency prompted a rush on bottled water. You cant live without water. The governor has called on the federal Management Agency to assist with supplies. Restaurants, schools, and Day Care Centers have been ordered to shut down. The water is being tested every hour, but its unclear how long the emergency will last. Susan mcginnis, cbs news. The latest Defense Department report on the Sexual Assault at the nations military academies is due out today. The report notes that alcohol is often a factor and comes following a series of scandals that hit the academies last year. David martin reports. Reporter although the number of reported Sexual Assaults at the three Service Academies went down, they say theres still a culture which tolerates and might even occurrence offensive sexual behavior. There were several assaults at the academies, down from 80 last year. That does not confirm whether there were fewer Sexual Assaults or that victims were afraid to come forward. Focus groups conducted for the report found crude and offensive language and sexist comments occurred frequently and are an ingrained part in the experience at the academies and contribute to a disrespectful environment which might encourage worse behavior. Cadets in midshipment are afraid to report for fear of being ostracized. The rugby club was disbanded for trash talk emails derogatory to women. At the air force academy where twothirds of the offensive Sexual Assaults occurred, offensive power potato slides. And the most notorious, two Naval Academy Football Players are facing courtmartial for assaulting a female in mid shipment. Those courtmartialed were scheduled to begin in the next few weeks but now it appears the prosecutors will drop charges against one of them because the investigators failed to read him his rights. The plea ends a contentious case surrounding an alleged rape of a 14yearold girl. As teri okita reports, her family had hoped for a harsher sentence. Mr. Barnett truly regrets the actions to which he has pled guilty. Reporter 19yearold matt barnett agreed to a misdemeanor child endangerment conviction for leaving a drunken teenage girl out in the cold back in 2012. That victim, daisy coleman, was 14 at the time. She said she went to a party where she was given alcohol and claims barnett, then 17, raped her. Barnett said the sex was consensual. Special prosecutor jean baker said she could not prove colemans allegation was true. There was insufficient evidence go forward on the case of Sexual Assault. Reporter the case drew National Attention when the first prosecutor dropped it. Some claimed barnetts prominent family was given special treatment but his Attorney Says that is not true. Theres absolutely no evidence that political favoritism played a role in the decision of either prosecutor. Reporter colemans family says she was recently bullied online and in a facebook posting her mother said coleman had recently attempted suicide. The federal prosecutor read a statement from the girl. Im grateful the defendant took responsibility by pleading guilty to the charges. I am ready to move forward. Reporter barnett was sentenced to two years probation. Jon lapook reports, theyre even exceeding their own goals. Reporter researchers at the university of North Carolina found the company sold 6. 4 trillion fewer calories in 2012 than in 2007. Thats four times the amount they had pledged. The drop translates to an average of 78 fewer calories sold daily to each american.
