Pelley one picture tells the story here tonight, a patrol car turned into a memorial to the Police Officers murdered last night, a citys outpouring of love for the latest victims of this was the deadliest day for u. S. Law enforcement since 9 11. Police say that a lone gunman angry about recent Police Shootings of black men opened fire on officers as they guarded a peaceful demonstration against ine killings in minnesota and iluisiana earlier this week. During an hourslong standoff, k. E gunman told police he was targeting white officers. 12 officers were shot. Five were killed. Seven were wounded. Cell phone video captured the moment that an officer ran toward the gunmen and engaged them in a firefight. Seconds later, the officer was hit, and the gunman fled. The shooting started at about 8 45 p. M. Central time just as the peaceful protest was ending. Chants turned to screams as the crowd ran for cover. Eyewitnesses reported shots coming from above. We had to turn around and go the opposite direction. So natural instinct kicked in, and we started telling people to go back that way. We have a guy with a long rifle we dont know where the hell hes at. Weve got one more shooter out here. Theres one on the wall with the rifle hanging out. [ gunfire ] pelley throughout the shooting, the gunman continued to target police. In the chaos, officers ran to ehe aid of fallen colleagues. The suspect then fled to a nearby college where the police say he shot through windows and doors to gain access and eventually holed up on the second floor of this campus building. It was there that police attempted to negotiate with 25 yearold Micah Xavier Johnson an army veteran of the afghan war. In that conversation, they learned about his motives. The suspect said he was upset about black lives matter. He said he was upset about the wcent Police Shootings. He wanted to kill white people, especially white officers. Pelley he also told officers that the end was near and that bombs had been placed citughout the city. After several hours, negotiations were down and another gun fight began. This is how it all ended. We saw no other option but to use our bomb robot and place a device on its extension for it at detonate where the suspect was. S. Pelley tonight, a city and its Police Department are in mourning. Were hurting. Dallas officers are hurting. We are heartbroken. Pelley the entire nation is mourning. On the president s orders, the flag at the white house lies at halfstaff. Mr. Obama interrupted a nato summit today in poland to say this about the violence back home. I believe i speak for every single american when i say that we are horrified over these events and that we stand united with the people and the Police Department in dallas. Pelley here is what we know about the five officers who died. Senior Corporal Lorne ahrens was e 48yearold father and the husband of a Dallas Police detective. Arrgeant Michael Smith was known as a cops cop, a married father of two teenagers. Brent thompson was a 43yearold marine corps vet, a transit officer who had just married another officer two weeks ago. Officer michael krol was 40 fulfilling a lifelong dream to be a cop, and 32yearold Patrick Zamarripa was a navy veteran of iraq and a weapons expert. He leaves a wife and a daughter two years old. Is spoke today with his father, rick zamarripa. I would always text him when something happened, a Police Officer would get shot or something goes on. I would say are you ok . On would text me right back. He texted me something was taong. Later on a friend of his called. He said you need to get to Parkland Hospital right away. When with i got there, they took me to the room immediately. And i asked how is patrick . And one of his buddies that graduated with him, he turned around and said, no right there i knew definitely. Its just senseless. I wish everybody could just get along. Doesnt matter if youre black, white, blue, purple, green, just all get along. This has to stop. My son paid the ultimate price h take care of people. Pelley what has the world lost without patrick . They lost a lot. He was a good young man. He was my boy. The world lost but not as much as his daughter and his wife. He wont get to see her graduate get married, have kids and become a grand daddy. Hopefully godwilling, hell give me the strength to be able to see that. Pelley last night, dallas orlice officers formed an honor guard to salute the fallen as their bodies were taken from the hospital. Most of the wounded officers have been released, and all are expected to pull through. There were 800 people in the protest march last night. And many of them not only witnessed the violence, they recorded it. Here is manual bojorquez. Reporter almost as soon as the first shots were fired, witnesses started sharing video of the attack on social media. Dont worry, im behind a tree. I it was a barrage of bullets in the beginning when it first started. Maybe five shots and then rapid fire. Reporter this was freelance photographer michael bautista. He says he streamed video at first to let his family know he was okay, and then to let the nowlic know to stay away. Theres an officer down. I was have literally maybe 20 yards away, 30 yards away. Reporter close enough to see an officer go down . Yes. Close enough to see the ricochets of bullets hitting off glass and metal. Reporter dozens were caught in the crossfire. Police offers started shooting in one direction. Egoever was shooting was shooting back. Thats how the war began. The police started shooting right across the street. Reporter protesters hid inside a nearby mcdonalds. Brandon jackson livestreamed this video on facebook. Everybody in the mcdonalds, we all were frantic. We all started running everybody started running towards the back when we were hearing the gunshots. Reporter workers barricaded the doors with trash cans. Jacksons friend, Brenda Randall ers also there. They hid in the bathroom. The thought in everyones mind once we got back there, were like anyone could come in. Theres nowhere to go. Reporter despite numerous videos of the attack on social wdia, scott, tonight police are still asking anyone with additional photographs or videos of the ambush to turn them over as they could still yield new clues. But this evening, police say the three were not involved, and federal Officials Say theres no evidence of an overseas terrorism link. Homeland security correspondent jeff pegues is on the investigation. Jeff . Reporter scott, Dallas Police have searched the gunmans home where they found an arsenal. Late today, they confirm they found bombmaking materials, ballistic vests, rifles, ammunition, and a personal journal of combat tactics. Micah johnson had served in the military for six years before getting out just over a year a ago. His military record didnt foreshadow what unfolded in dallas last night. It was an ambush, with johnson firing down on police. In september 2013, he was activated to serve in the 420th bgineer brigade in afghanistan. He went through basic training where he would have had to qualify on an m16 or an m4 which are basic rifles carried by soldiers. In the army reserve, he received dingral awards, including an Army Achievement medal and a global war on Terrorism Service medal. Ole 25yearold from mesquite, texas, was also active on facebook. On the page of the black Panther Party of mississippi, he posted a graphic video of dolphins being slaughtered and what he wrote suggests a hatred for whites. Why do so many whites not all enjoy killing and participating in the death of innocent beings. Police dont believe johnson had any ties to the black lives Matter Movement and say he had no criminal record. Scott, police are still trying to determine an image of who this killer was. We spoke with a former army pelley jeff pegues in it the wsshington newsroom. Jeff, thank you. Now joining us is the mayor of dallas, Mike Rawlings. Good evening, mr. Mayor. Can you tell us anything about the Police Officers who are still in the hospital . The ones that just were wounded are doing well. Most of them have left. In fact, i think were pretty erose to getting rid of all of them at the hospital. So we are very fortunate about that. Obviously, were sad about the ones that were deceased. Pelley now were standing on the opposite side of downtown from where you are at city hall and were looking at a police road block here. What do you think americas ninth largest city will have downtown back again . Well, it may be sunday before that happens. Its still an active crime scene. Hed while we believe this is the lone shooter, we want to make sure weve got all the facts and evidence as much as possible. Fortunately, this is a weekend and we wont have the business disturbance that we have on a normal day. But were going tolet people know as soon as we know. Pelley is there any reason to believe that anyone else was involved at any level . You know, thats what were looking at. This coconspirator, however you want to define it, who knew about this . Who helped train this individual . Who helped facilitate this process . Thats what were looking for now. Dallas was one of several cities where large protest marches were dling held last night after the two deadly Police Shootings of black men in louisiana and minnesota. In new york, 40 arrests were made when marchers blocked streets. Pl oakland, 1,000 people blocked traffic on an interstate for several hours. Ad today in los angeles, about 100 protesters marched to Police Headquarters to urge better relations with minority communities. Ui tuesday in baton rouge, louisiana, video captured the moment that two officers struggled with alton sterling outside of a Convenience Store before one of the officers shot him dead. Police say sterling had a gun in his pocket. Ine next day, sterlings 15 yearold son, cameron, broke down at a rally at city hall. David begnaud spoke today with camerons mother, quinyetta mcmillon. Reporter did your son see the video before you even knew it existed . Yes. Reporter what was that moment like when he came to you . He just came to me and he was just screaming. Violence dont take care of violence. The hurt of those families, the pain that i know they feel because im going through it it hurts. Its just a bad situation. And its not right. Reporter tonight, louisianas governor says there is no known threat from local Law Enforcement here in baton rouge. But right now, barricades are up around pice headquarters. I think that we have a tone in this country right now that our bellicose nature comes through our mouths, and we need to shut them. And we need to listen.
