This is the cbs evening news with scott pelley. Pelley this is our western edition. All day long, there has been an incredible outpouring of love for prince at his home in minnesota. This following a night of celebrations of his life and music, including an enormous block party thrown by spike lee in brooklyn, new york. Prince had millions of fans all around the world, but ironically he died alone. That was one of the revelations today about his sudden and stillunexplained death yesterday at the age of 57. Dean reynolds has the latest on the investigation. Reporter a van pulled away from the medical Examiners Office this afternoon, returning the body of prince Rogers Nelson to his family. Carver county sheriff jim olson spoke for many in this community. This is a tragedy for all of us. To you, prince Rogers Nelson was a celebrity. To us, hes a Community Member and a good neighbor. Reporter an autopsy and toxicology test took place brlier today, but the results wont be known for a while. What is known is that prince was dropped off by friends at 8 00 p. M. On wednesday. When staffers could not reach him hours later on thursday, they went to his 65,000square foot home and studio and found him slumped in an elevator on the first floor, alone and unresponsive. A transcript of the 911 calls show it came from an unidentified male at 9 43 a. M. Is there any reason to believe that foul play was involved . We have no reason to believe at this time its a suicide. The rest of it is under investigation. Reporter it is known that prince had Serious Health issues and mystery shrouds a medical emergency that took place a week ago when his charter jet from atlanta to minneapolis was diverted to moline, illinois. After treatment there for what aides said was the flu, prince tweeted, i am transformed. The next night, he held a party for 200 at his home and offered the crowd this enigmatic thought Deborah Grant there was. He was on stage for maybe ten minutes, and then he was done. Ou sounded kind of frail, you know. He didnt sing or anything. Reporter the sheriff said prince was a very private person, scott. But when i asked him if he was a healthy person, he said he would let the medical examiner talk pout that when the time comes. Pelley Dean Reynolds yoporting tonight. Dean, thank you. Prince was one of the most famous people in the world but his heart belonged to minnesota. Jamie yuccas is there. Reporter prince rogers islson grew up in a broken home on minneapolis north side raised by two musicians. At 52 he was known as a good player for his High School Basketball team. But he realized his love for music and saw a career with no limits, creating his unique minnesota sound. Dayna frank owns the famous Downtown Minneapolis club, first lenue, considered the launching pad for princes career. Av everyone was so proud of him, and i think he gave people a sense of pride where they were from, you know. He shot purple rain here. He recorded here. Minneapolis was very present in his work. Reporter and minnesotans were also proud of how he gave back. He generously gave to dozens of charities like the minnesota Dance Theatre under the condition they would not publicize his gifts. He gave 1. 5 million to an Afterschool Program in new york. Tit his appreciation for his hometown was no secret. Iv you always will live here . Yes. Why . Its so cold, it keeps the bad people out. Polnother important story tonight, police in southern ohio have a dragnet out for a killer who executed eight members of one family. The murderer hunted down the extended family in several homes in a rural county. Vinita nair is following this. Reporter the motive for the killings remains unclear tonight, but the rhoden family was clearly targeted. Eight of them were killed executionstyle. Ohio attorney general mike dewine it would appear all of them were shot in the head. It would appear also that it occurred during the night. E had victims who were in bed. The one mom, apparently, was killed in her bed with the four dayold right there. Reporter police say the fourdayold survived the shootings, as did a sixmonth old and a threeyearold. All eight were found in four locations just a few miles apart. My phones been burning up. Sc reporter phil fulton, pastor of the nearby church, described the victims as a woman, her ex husband, and her adult children. Its such a tragic, tragic situation, whats happening. And i cant imagine what theyre going through right now. Reporter Pike County Sheriff Charles Reader told residents to remain vigilant. I am telling you that they are armed and dangerous if theyre still at large. Reporter scott, tonight, ilvestigators say there is a hessibility that the shooter was a member of the family. We begin with breaking news in the east bay. Chopper 5 overhead where a bart car crashed during a test run in hayward. This is one of the brandnew coaches. In fact, weve learned the very first being tested. It happened just before 2 p. M. In south hayward near industrial boulevard and union city border. Kpix 5s andria borba is along the tracks. What happened . Reporter that is up in the air right now, elizabeth. Bart says they dont know if this was operator error or mechanical error. No one was hurt when it happened about 1 55 this afternoon. It was on a test track between the south hayward station and the union city station. The crash happened at under 10 miles an hour. Now, this train did not totally derail according to bart. But it did land in a sand berm. They say at the moment there appears to be no clear damage to the car and no injuries. They are doing a final assessment on the car right now. Its the first new car in the wave of the future fleet that arrived, they got custody of this in late march. They were doing a test run
