Reporter shiraz maher is coauthor of the groundbreaking report that looked at the fighters messages on social media. I think what surprised us is the level of openness from these guys. We see a lot of pictures, a lot of video, people fooling around, relaxing. Its like a summer camp for jihadists. I was born and raised in this country. Reporter but the biggest strietz for maher and his team were the role played by this man ahmad musa jibril, an online cleric from dearborn, michigan, who emerged as a leading source of inspiration. Joseph carter showed us the connections he found. This large circle that you see here is jabril, and all of the lines you see going in, those are follows from foreign fighters. Reporter so whats his appeal . He is cariz mat ping he is knowledgeable, and so all these things put together make him accessible to foreigners who live in the west who dont necessarily speak arabic. If their women, our women, are being raped and you dont get mad, then your faith is at stake. Reporter his polarity is reminiscent of another american extremist clerk, alalakey. They were taken by a boston globe photographer who also recorded the tragic scene here one year ago. And therein lies a tale told tonight by elaine quijano. Reporter the day the bombs went off at the Boston Marathon, veteran boston globe photographer John Tlumacki took more than 200 photos. I have trouble going back to the finish line of the marathon because i can visualize where everybody was when i photographed them. Reporter he was especially haunted by the images he took of 17yearold sydney corcoran and and her 48yearold mother, celeste. Sharp nel severed sydneys femoral artery. By photographing people the way i did, by photographing sydney on the ground helpless, and celeste, i felt like i took advantage of them, even though i was doing my job, that i was guilty of maybe depriving them of their dignity. Tlumacki felt compelled to meet them. Two weeks later, when he finally did, he apologized. I didnt want to have that image in my head of them laying on the ground. I needed a new picture of them and i asked them if i could take a picture of them, and they just kind of looked at each other and smiled. Reporter they grew closer as he documented their recovery. What are some of the moments that stand out for you . One of the first times that celeste stood up by herself without holding on to anything. That was for me day one of celeste being energized, being courageous, being boston strong. Reporter tlumacki witnessed milestones, such as the day sydney left the hospital. To just be in my brothers car and be out of the hospital and to just know that i was going home and i was just so ecstatic, i just threw my arms up and i was like, all right, take me home. Reporter five days later, celeste came home. They wheeled me up and i just threw my arms up in the air just like she did, and i was like, yes, im home. Reporter another favorite was the night of sydneys senior prom. There were times when we didnt think wed ever be that happy again or even just be here physically, to be able to look back and see that, theres a certain triumph in it because you feel like youve overcome this great obstacle. Reporter do you feel absolved of your guilt now . I do. I remember celeste saying to me, john, i dont want you to ever, ever to feel that guilt ever again. Whatever you did, people wouldnt have known the horror that we went through, what terrorism does, and you captured that for the world to see. Thats all i needed to hear. That was closure for me. Ready when you are. All right. Reporter after experiencing the bombing as strangers, they are healing together as friends. Elaine quijano, cbs news, boston.
