But for the families of the 239 people aboard that missing malaysian jetliner, it is unmitigated agony. In beijing today, some of them threatened to go on a Hunger Strike unless they get answers. But 11 days after the boeing 777 disappeared, answers are still hard to come by. Today, sources told us that checks of the computers and email of the captain and first officer turned up nothing to suggest a plot. Still, there are indications tonight that someone in the cockpit intentionally took flight 370 off course. Seth doane is in kuala lumpur for us tonight. Seth. Ood evening to you, scott. Sources say there is evidence that the plane was turned off that original course after someone typed a course change into an onboard Navigation System in the cockpit. This would suggest someone had real training in the 777 systems, something far more sophisticated than simply turning a wheel. We asked malaysian authorities about that today. Was the planes path, a westward direction, programmed into the aircrafts flight Management System . As far as were concerned, the aircraft was programmed to fly to beijing. Reporter the c. E. O. Of Malaysia Airlines said reports the planes flight path was tampered with may have been speculation. Is it plausible . Is it something youve considered . Once youre in the aircraft, anything is possible. Reporter thats only sharpened suspicion of the pilots, Zaharie Ahmad shah, and the copilot, fariq abdul hamid. Captain zaharie is a person who enjoys his life, who loves doing things to make people happy. Reporter peter chong is quick to defend his friend, captain zaharie. A lot has been made of the fact that police found a Flight Simulator inside his house. Who has a Flight Simulator in their house . Anybody with aviation as a hobby and you can afford it. Reporter little is known about the copilot, but so far, intensive background checks on the passengers and crew have failed to turn up any links to terrorism. Criticism of the investigation is mounting, even within malaysia. Right from the outset, immediately when the plane disappeared, they should have realized that this involved expertise which was beyond our capacity. Reporter Sivarasa Rasiah is an opposition member of malaysias parliament. He said malaysia should have accepted offers of help from the u. S. And others sooner. I think if that had happened, perhaps we might not have had the fiasco of waiting a week in the South China Sea looking in a place where we shouldnt have been looking in the first place. In another major story breaking tonight, the president of russia, vladimir putin, annexed part of ukraine, ignoring the warnings of president obama. In an emotional speech, putin said ukraines Crimean Peninsula has always been an integral part of russia in the hearts and minds of people. Putin sent troops into crimea this month after the president of ukraine, a putin ally, was overthrown in a revolt. Most in crimea are of russian descent, and over the weekend, they voted to join russia. Elizabeth palmer reports ukrainian troops are still on their bases in crimea, and for the first time today, there was shooting with one dead. Reporter its unclear why the shooting broke out in the capital, but Ukrainian Defense sources say unidentified armed men stormed a ukrainian base. There are thousands of ukrainian soldiers barricaded in on their bases all over this peninsula. Behind makeshift blockades, theyre on constant alert, surrendered by hostile, pro Russian Armed men. Tonight, we arrived at one such base where soldiers feared an attack was imminent after theyd refused to surrender. When we arrived, the officer wanted to talk to us, but suddenly an armed man loomed out of the dark and told him to keep his mouth shut. Turn off the cameras. Reporter after phoning his commander, the ukrainian told us it was too dangerous and that we should leave. And, of course, scott, the longer this situation festers, the riskier it becomes, especially as, today, the Ukrainian Defense department has authorized its soldiers to use their weapons in selfdefense. Pelley elizabeth palmer, thank you very much. Russia has massed troops all along its border with ukraine, and there are worries now that the annexation of crimea is just the start. In reaction to all of this, president obama called an emergency meeting of the g7 in europe for next week to talk about further punishment of russia. Bill plante is at the white house for us. Reporter in poland, Vice President biden pledged that the u. S. Would stand by russias european neighbors and promised that more sanctions are coming. The first round announced monday by the president freezes any u. S. Assets of four ukrainians and seven russians close to president putin, and blocks them from entering the United States. The move was greeted with disdain in russia. Deputy Prime Minister dmitry rogozin, one of those sanctions tweeted, i think some prankster prepared the draft of this act of the u. S. President. White house spokesman jay carney begged to differ. A lot of people who were sanctioned dont have any assets in the u. S. So or say they dont. Reporter or say they dont. So, how do these bite . Bill, what i can tell you is the actions taken against 11 individuals were part of a process that will continue, and the costs have been real, and they will increase. Reporter could russian president putin be a target of the next round of sanctions . Administration officials dont rule it out, but admit its not likely given that the u. S. Scott, the white house concedes that the russians sanctions, so far, are not in the top tier of that nations super rich and most influential. Two cars and a truck were hit and caught fire, one driver suffered serious burns. There is no word on the cause. The new c. E. O. Of General Motors today apologized for the companys failure to recall more than 1. 5 million vehicles until years after it learned of a deadly defect. That defect is now linked to at least 12 deaths. Kpix5s linda yee on the recent ruling involving one of the countrys biggest water banks located in californias farm belt. It is a story youll see only on 5. Its the worst drought on record. But theres plenty of water here in the water bank near bakersfield. Originally designed to be used by farmers during the dry years. Except years ago, the state traded it away giving control to a handful of big agriculture businesses, the company that produces the world supply of pom gran pomgranites and almonds. It gave the bank away. They didnt analyze any of the impacts of the current water bank in the future. In a new ruling, the judge agrees the state violated the Environmental Quality act. What its going to do to neighboring water banks. What its going to do to neighboring ground water. What its going to do to delta fish and delta farmers.
