Captioning sponsored by cbs this is the cbs evening news with scott pelley. Pelley good evening. This is our western edition. The truce in ukraine never had a chance. The slaughter on the streets of kiev erupted again just hours after a ceasefire was announced between police and antigovernment protesters. This is kiev, the capital city, the center of the violence. The Health Department there reported 67 people were killed today. For three months, protesters have been demanding that ukraine have greater economic ties with western europe. This week, the protests exploded in violence. Cbs news correspondent Holly Williams is near the square in kiev tonight. Holly. Reporter scott, the fighting has died down here in the center of kiev tonight, but after a day of bloodshed, the demonstrators are already putting up new barricades preparing for more violence. Ukraines fragile truce crumbled within hours. On kievs Independence Square this morning, protesters were picked off with live ammunition. Affluent city streets became a battleground. Some demonstrators were also armed. Others targeted the riot police with flaming molotov cocktails. Dima yurinov normally works as a consultant, but now hes joined the fight against the government. Last night the two sides agreed to a truce. They started first. They started shooting first. Were staying here, just staying, and they start shooting. Reporter its unclear who broke the truce first, but both sides suffered casualties. Membership of those injured in the clashes were treated in a makeshift clinic set up in the lobby of a hotel. But for some, all help was too late. This man told us the seven demonstrators here were all deliberately killed with shots to the head and neck. On another corner of the square, these men prayed and wept for their fallen friend. After occupying the heart of kiev for nearly three months, theyre exhausted. This started out as a peaceful protest, but has now become a deadly power struggle. The demonstrators want ukraines government thrown out, but the countrys leaders are determined to stay in office. On a side street, these captured policemen were lined up and led away by protesters. Where are you taking them . They said they wouldnt harm their prisoners, but refused to tell us anything else. As ukraines political divisions turned bloodier, neither side is innocent and neither side is ready to lay down its weapons. Pelley holly, if no one is willing to lay down their weapons, what chance is there of a peaceful resolution . Reporter well, scott, ukraines Parliament Just voted to send all Government Security forces back to their bases, which the protesters have been celebrating. But that does not mean an end to this crisis. The riot police wont leave until ukraines president signs that into law, which he may not do, and the protesters have said all along that they wont leave until president Viktor Yanukovych is removed from power. Pelley a situation developing by the minute. Holly, thanks very much. Now, here is why this is happening. Ukraine is being torn in two over its national identity, essentially, the west wants political and economic ties with western europe. President yanukovich and the east want strong ties with russia. The Ukrainian Government is nearly broke, and theres anger with president yanukovich who has jailed his top political rival and held elections that outside observers said were rigged. We are also hearing now that the president has sat down with opposition leaders to negotiate a resolution to this battle. Now, in another developing story, the centers for Disease Control told us today that this flu season has been unusually hard on adults under the age of 64. That group accounts for two third of the flu cases right now. The state being hardest hit is california where the flu has killed at least 243 people, compared to 106 last season. Heres carter evans. Reporter brad kersey was a family man, a father of four and just 37 years old when he got the flu. The amazing thing about this was just the speed with which everything occurred. Reporter mark kersey says his brother checked into the hospital in january, he died nine days later. By the time i was able to fly across the country, i you, unfortunately, never got to see him again before he passed away. Reporter the flu is usually the most dangerous for the very old and the very young. This season is different. According to the centers for Disease Control, 61 of those hospitalized are between 18 and 64 years old. About 90 of flu cases are caused high the h1 n1 strain of the virus. This is a little curious and its the first time weve seen this pattern since 2009 when this virus last circulated. Reporter dr. Joseph bresee is an epidemiologist at the c. D. C. He says the current vaccine covers h1 n1 and is about 60 effective if you get the shot. This group, the nonelderly adult population, is the least likely population to be vaccinated every year because as adults we think we wont get the flu or if we get the flu we wont get very sick. Reporter brad kersey did not get a flu shot this year, a mistake his brother hopes others will learn from. I think had he got a flu shot this was probably preventable. Ive got some great memories but it would be a lot better if he was still with us. Reporter the c. D. C. Says this is a wakeup call for those who have not yet been vaccinated, and, scott, the flu season could last several more weeks so there is still time to get a flu shot. Pelley carter evans in our los angeles newsroom. Carter, thank you. Tonight, Severe Weather is rolling across the eastern half of the country. There are tornado watches and warnings from the deep south to the midwest. To the north, heavy rain and snow are falling in states that were buried under snow this winter. What will happen to all that water . Heres dean reynolds. Reporter near 50 degree temperatures in some parts of the midwest forced a brief thaw but then sheets of pouring rain made matters a whole lot worse as snow melt ran down streets and pooled into impromptu ponds like this one in south end, indiana. Melting ice and rainslicked pavement got the better of this semi in sioux city, iowa. In huron county, michigan, they used dynamite to break the ice into smaller chunks and keep the Sebewaing River flowing. South of chicago, in moisture, illinois, officials are siphoning warm water from a nearby Nuclear Power plants cooling pond into the Kankakee River in an attempt to fight the ice. Frozen snow drifts are a constant concern in wheaton, illinois. Because they cover many of the citys storm drapes. Unblocking those drains is vital to reduce the surface water. Right now, potential flooding is our main concern. Reporter the sandbags are ready, and so is vince luang, the citys director of public works, who has seen trouble uncomfortably close up. Your pipes froze up yesterday. In this building, its caused water to back up into our lunchroom area. Reporter while its been relatively mild for the last couple of days here, scott, a new cold front is on the way we told you last night that the department of Homeland Security has warned airlines with flights we told you last week the department of hoisk has warned airlines with flights inbound to the United States to be on heightened alert for passengers who might be hiding explosives in their shoes or their carryons. Tonight we are joined with mike morell, who until last year, was number two at the c. I. A. He is now a cbs news contributor. Mike, where would this threat be coming there . Reporter scott, we dont know for sure, but my real suspicion goes to al qaeda in yemen. They have, since 2009, tried to attack the United States three times unsuccessfully. Pelley and there is a bomb maker in yemen named ibrahim al asiri. Tell me about him. He is a saudi national. He is, i think, the most dangerous man in the world. Because he is a very skilled bomb maker. He is the person that brought us the underwear bomb. He is the person that brought us the printer cartridge bomb. He is the person that brought us the nonmetallic suicide vest bomb, and if he is working some sort of specialized shoe bomb, that is something to be worried about. Pelley the United States has known about him for many years now. Has there ever been an attempt to take him off the battle field . Reporter so he is a primary target of the United States and yemen. He is somebody that we would like to see removed from the battlefield for the reasons i said. But we have never been able to even get close to that. Pelley not even close. Reporter not even close, scott. Pelley mike morell, former Deputy Director of the c. I. A. , thanks very much. Did General Motors wait too long after deadly accidents to order a recall . [ male announcer ] ask your doctor if chantix is right for you. Pelley now a cbs news investigation. Last week, General Motors said it was recalling more than 700,000 vehicles because of a problem with the ignition switch. G. M. Said six people had been killed in accidents. But tonight, weve learned that g. M. s recall is coming 10 years after the defect was first discovered and seven years after people began to die. Jeff glor is looking into this. Reporter on october 24, 2006, a compact car went off the road in st. Croix county, wisconsin. Two teenage girls were killed, 18yearold natasha buyingle, and margie beskaus 15yearold daughter, amy. There are days that days that i am fine, days that i can function, but there are just as many bad days where you just want to cry all day. Reporter there was no drinking involved, no other cars on the road, weather was determined not to be a factor. No one was wearing a seat belt, but an investigation found the airbags never deployed, and the ignition switch was found in the accessory position, meaning the car likely did not have power when it crashed no power steering, no power brakes, no airbags. Natashas stepfather, jayne rimer, has spent the last eight years looking for answers. Every day we go i wonder what happened. Reporter no one has ever said to you, this is why this hammond. No. Reporter the girls remember in a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt air, vehicle included in that massive recall of more than 700,000 cars just last week because g. M. Says a heavy key ring or sudden jarring can switch the car off. Now, in a letter sent to the department of transportation by the family of another person who died in a cobalt, a 29yearold nurse in georgia, named brook melton, they charge g. M. Knew about the ignition defect in 2004. A Service Bulletin was posted to dealers by g. M. In 2005 in case customers complained saying, theres the potential for the driver to inadvertently turn off the ignition. The concern is more likely to corporate if the driver is short and has a large and or heavy key chain. But the cars kept being manufactured without a fix and none were called back. Joan claybrook is the former head of the national highway Traffic Safety administration. This is an immoral act by General Motors to cover up this defect, not tell people, and then the result was was inevitable that people were going to die and be injured. And that to me is unconscionable. Its like throwing an airplane passenger out of the airplane without a parachute. Reporter we asked g. M. For a comment on camera. They declined. When we asked last week why the recall wasnt issued a decade ago they told us the incident rate was very low with no growing trend. They added today families who lost loved ones may be getting answer. It made me angry. They knew something was wrong with the car before the accident. I just dont understand how they can knowingly put these cars out and still let people drive them. This is my child. This is my baby girl. Reporter amy and natasha are two of the six deaths g. M. Has linked to the ignition issue. Scott, the company stopped making the cobalt in 2010 but there are still more than half a million cobalts on the road today. Pelley worth noting that g. M. Volunteered the recall. It wasnt ordered by the government. Reporter thats right. Pelley jeff, thanks very much. In los angeles today, two men pleaded guilty to the 2011 beating of a San Francisco giants fan outside dodger stadium. The judge called them cowrdz, and when one, Louis Sanchez smirked, the judge asked, do you think this is funny . The judge then sentenced sanchez to eight years in prison. The other man got four. The beating left 45yearold brian stowe brain damaged and permanently disabled. What drove facebook to pay 19 billion for an upstart company . That story is next. Pelley today, Facebook Stock rose a little over 2 , the first day after it announced that its buying a Company Called whatsapp for 19 billion. Whatsapp makes an app that more and more people are using to send Text Messages but a whole lot more folks have never heard of it and thats why we have called in our cbs News Business analyst jill schlesinger. Jill, whats whatsapp, and why is this such a big deal . Reporter well this is a way to send Text Messages and photos and streams through the internet. And that allows you to avoid paying those big phone charges. Its really been very big internationally. Thats why a lot of people in the u. S. Havent heard of it, but theyve got 450 million active monthly users. Of that, about 320 million use it on a daily basis. This company is growing like crazy. A Million People a day sign up. Its enormous. If we look at the growth in the first four years of the life, its got more monthly users in these first four years than facebook, gmail, twitter, and skype combined during their first four years. So this is a huge play, a big price tag, and i think potentially could be an interesting deal for facebook. Pelley but heres the thing a customer of this app pays nothing in the first year. The subscription fee in the second year is 1. How can this company be worth 19 billion . Reporter i think thats a valid question, but on the facebook side of it, theyre saying, look, this is a company thats growing so fast that if we put money into it and they get to those billion users we think theyre going to get to, maybe we can raise that 1 a year. Maybe it can go to 2 or 5, and there wont be that much push back. And i think theres Something Big that facebook really needed to consider it just gobbled up one of its main upandcoming competitors, and that was a big deal for them. Pelley jill schlesinger, thanks very much. Listen to this, whatsapp was founded in 2009 by two former yahoo executives. It has 55 employees. Brian acton had been rejected for jobs by twitter and facebook. The other owner jam koum was once on food stamps. Overall, the u. S. Leads the medal count with 25. Russia is second with 23. Well be right back. Across america people are taking charge of their type 2 diabetes with noninsulin victoza®. Pelley john glenn, 52 years ago today, the First American to orbit the earth. The space race was on, but tonight, chip reid tells us theres a new race to save the right stuff from the ravages of time. One giant leap for mankind. Reporter in the early days of the u. S. Space program, the space suits were lifesaving, technological marvels, but today, those old suits are so brittle theyre in danger of falling apart. They were designed for that harsh environment but they were not designed to last a very long time. Reporter cathy lewis is curator of space suits at the smithsonian air and space museums new 79 million facility in virginia. This suit, worn by astronaut Owen Garriott on the sky lab space station in 1973, was designed to last only six months. This is a very delicate its become very delicate over time. Were trying to preserve this for 50 years, 100 years. Reporter what exactly are you doing to preserve this space suit . If we keep the suits at a stable, low but not freezing temperature, about 60 degrees fahrenheit, and a low humidity, we can stabilize; slow some of that deterioration. Reporter the mission is to slow the pace of inevitable decay, of tens of thousands of u. S. Aviation artifacts, a collection too big to house at the museum on the national mall. Those National Treasures from early Flight Attendant uniforms uniforms to vintage aircraft engines are being moved from temporary Storage Facilities in maryland built after world war ii to their pristine, new, climatecontrolled home. As with all historic technological objects you cant just sort of park them. They require constant look after. Reporter chief conservator Malcolm Collum is looking after everything there the Space Shuttle discovery to navigation watches that belonged to charles lindbergh. On the inside of the case you can see some oxidation happening and green spotting. Reporter hell carefully remove the ravages of time before the watch is placed on display at the museum in washington. Im awed by the objects they work on every single day, and i take it as a serious responsibility. I mean, i have i have our nations heritage in my hands.
