What weve learned about the plan to ramp up u. S. Firepower. And on this veterans day, we begin our new series, profiles in service. How a different type of bootcamp is helping veterans fight their toughest battle against p. T. S. D. It was the purpose i was looking for. Odonnell also instagram is ending its love affair with the like button. What big changes could be in store for your feed. This is the cbs evening news with norah odonnell. Odonnell good evening. And thank you for joining us on what is officially the coldest veterans day ever in dozens of cities from texas to michigan. Snow is falling and temperatures are dropping tonight as an arctic invasion plunges deep and wide across much of the country. The dangerous weather is already causing accidents and travel delays. By thursday more than 222 million americans, thats about 75 of the country, will shiver in temperatures below freezing. More than 300 records could be shattered from the Central Plains to new england, and as far south as florida. David begnaud is in the thick of it and leads off our coverage tonight. Reporter it was a turbulent touchdown in chicago. At least it landed. Reporter and landed they did, but the flight skidded into the grass at Ohare Airport just before 8 00 a. M. The conditions here were very bad it was windy and very icy. Reporter luis torres coret was a passenger. He credits the pilot. Were lucky we had a very competent pilot that knew what to do. Reporter this arctic blast also caused crashes on the roads in illinois and missouri and will blanket at least 25 states with snow and freezing temperatures by the time it moves on. It feels too early for snow. I have been here six years. I have never experienced winter coming so early. Reporter snowfall totals could reach up to a foot or more through the upper midwest. The conditions caused cancellations of Holiday Events that marked veterans day while ceremonies like this one in augusta, michigan, soldiered on despite the weather. Tonight were in batavia, new york. Its 26 degrees and the place is covered in snow. Look, the big story tonight is not just the records being broken around the country, its when its happening. Were only in the second week of november. Norah, winter doesnt even begin until december 21st. Odonnell there you go. All right, david, thank you. Lonnie quinn of wcbs tv in new york is tracking the frosty weather. Where and when will it be the worst, lonnie . Reporter by the worst, we have to address the worst snowfall and the worst cold air. Lets start off with the snow, worst of it right now taking place in the ohio valley while the Tennessee Valley its rain. But some of that rain will transition into snow as the temperatures drop. But who gets the most snowfall . Were thinking of places like around buffalo or cleveland with a little lakeeffect enhancement could see an additional, on top of what they already have, maybe eight inches. But say upstate new york, im thinking lake placid, maybe over toward burlington, vermont, they could maybe pick up a foot of snow, thats that dark blue that you see peppered in there. As far as the cold air goes, this will be a big story. Right now coldest air anywhere in our country is in fargo, where it feels like, again, this is temperature combined with windchill, it feels like one, one degree in fargo. Houston feels like 75 right now. By tomorrow morning it will feels 50 degrees colder at 28. At that same hour, philadelphia feels like 53. Walking to work. You walk home from work, it will feel like the 20s. By wednesday morning it feels like 13 in philadelphia. There may be a little bit of a bump on thursday where temperatures will go up a bit, but were getting deeper and deeper into the season. We have to get used to this. Odonnell thats cold for nexas. Thank you, lonnie. New tonight, were hearing from the pentagon in the impeachment inquiry. In newly released testimony, a defense official said National Security leaders all felt military aid to ukraine should not be stopped by the white house. Nancy cordes is at the capitol. Nancy, just moments ago we got an additional two other raanscripts from key officials. What are we learning . Reporter well, christopher anderson, norah, a former top adviser on ukraine, told lawmakers that back in may the president at a meeting said that ukraine had tried to take him down. A sign that mr. Trump believed some of the conspiracy theories that his personal lawyer was pushing. Anderson said that his fear was that if Rudy Giulianis narrative took hold, that it would undermine u. S. Influence in a key part of the world. Newly released transcripts show that even the pentagon was left in the dark when President Trump suddenly froze military aid to ukraine this summer. Deputy assistant secretary of defense laura cooper told lawmakers that the funds were held without explanation. Immediately, deputies began to coise concerns about how this could be done in a legal fashion. The aid was withheld at the same time that the president s personal lawyer, rudy giuliani, was pushing ukraine to launch investigations into former Vice President biden and his son hunter. The president s acting chief of staff hit a roadblock today as he navigates congressional demands for his testimony. Mick mulvaney is trying to join a lawsuit filed by charles kupperman, the top aide to former National Security adviser john bolton, but in a new court filing, kuppermans lawyer opposed mulvaneys bid to team up, saying his client wants to stay neutral while mulvaney not only supports the president but at one point even appeared to admit that there was a quid pro quo. We do that all the time with foreign policy. Reporter its the latest example of tension between mulvaney and bolton. Multiple witnesses have testified that bolton likened the Pressure Campaign on ukraine to a drug deal cooked up by mulvaney and others. And just moments ago mulvaneys attorney withdrew his request to join the kupperman lawsuit. He says instead mulvaney will file his own suit to determine if he has to testify. Norah. Odonnell well, thats a significant development. Nancy, thank you. Tonight there is more from our cbs sunday morning interview with former u. N. Ambassador nikki haley. In her new book, she claims former white house chief of staff john kelly and former defense secretary Rex Tillerson tried to recruit her to, in her words resist the president. You think his chief of staff, john kelly, was trying to undermine the president . I think that they were going in their own policy direction. I think that, you know, there were things that we would see in the National Security council that the president would say he wanted or in meetings that he wanted, and they would stall him out so that he might forget or they would try and move in their direction of the policy. I dont agree with what they did. I dont agree with how they did it. I dont agree with what anonymous is doing right now. Odonnell nobody is allowed to differ with the president . Absolutely, but you go and you sit down in front of him and you do that. You are serving a country that pected a president. And when you decide to go in a different direction, you either openly come out and say what you think and allow the American People to hear it, you go and tell the president and allow him to understand you, or you quit. Odonnell we asked general john kelly to respond and he told us, if by resistance and stalling, she means putting a staff process in place to make sure the president knew all the pros and cons of a decision he might be contemplating, then guilty as charged. Tillerson did not respond to our request. There is heartbreak and horror tonight in a tight knit College Community in atlanta. Jones spent holidays with crawfords family, and now she and her boyfriend are being held without bond on a murder charge. Norah. Odonnell all right, mark. Thank you. An ominous warning tonight from odonnell there is breaking news in mexico. Multiple arrests have been made in the massacre of nine women and children. The motive in the attack remains unknown. Its unclear how many suspects are under arrest or what role they may have played in the attack.
