This is the cbs evening news. Axelrod good evening. This is our western edition. Im jim axelrod. The National Basketball association is investigating what it calls disturbing and offensive comments, apparently made by a team owner. Donald sterling, the owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, is at the center of a controversy thats been exploding since this morning after the web site tmz posted audio they say is sterling making racist remarks about African Americans. This is the longest tenured owner in a league whose players are mostly black. The clippers are in the middle of a playoff series, and sterlings players are said to be furious. Late today, the Clippers Organization said it does not know if the tape is legitimate or has been altered. But as vinita nair reports, sterling did apologize to anyone who may have been hurt by the remarks attributed to him. Reporter tmz is not commenting on how they got the recording or why the nineminute argument was taped, but they say its the voice of Donald Sterling, owner of the l. A. Clippers, making racist remarks to his girlfriend. Reporter tmz says the argument started when v. Stiviano, sterlings girlfriend, posted a picture with Magic Johnson on her instagram. Reporter the recordings set off a firestorm. Magic johnson tweeted, i will never go to a clippers game again, as long as Donald Sterling is the owner. Late this afternoon, he spoke with kcbs sports director jim hill. I think that all of us are outraged. Were all upset, who are African Americans, because if youre going to be like this why are you owning a team in the n. B. A. , which, what, is over 70 African American basketball players . So i think he should step down, you know. If you feel like that in a league that is predominantly African Americans, you shouldnt be owning the team. Reporter on tnts halftime show, two n. B. A. Hall of famers said the league should react quickly. But we cannot have an n. B. A. Owner discriminating against a league that were a black league, ernie. The question is now should this guy continue being an owner . Reporter clippers coach doc rivers says players will not boycott the playoff game tomorrow. Star player chris paul issued a statement saying in part, this is a very serious issue which we will address aggressively. As players, we owe it to our teams and our fans to keep our focus on our game. 81yearold sterling has a long, documented history off alleged racist behavior. As a landlord, he refused to rent apartments to latinos and blacks, and he was sued by a former clippers executive, elgin bayor, for racial discrimination. In his response, sterling alleges that the woman on the recording was trying to get even after being sued by his family, which claims she embezzled close to 2 million. Next month sterling was scheduled to receive a Lifetime Achievement award from the l. A. Chapter of naacp. No word tonight if they will go forward with their plans. Reporter vanita, thank you. A huge Severe Weather system will be moving across the center of the country this evening, a slowmoving system that will last well into next week. An area stretching from texas to iowa is now at risk for large hail, strong winds, and tornados. Multiple tornadoes touched down late yesterday in eastern North Carolina with top winds as high as 135 miles per hour. At least 16 people were taken to emergency rooms, and at least 200 homes were heavily damaged or destroyed. Lets bring in eric fisher, chief meteorologist at our boston station wbz. Eric, who needs to be most careful in the next 2448 hours . Reporter well, jim, a lot of americans need to be most careful, starting in the plains. This is the storm were watching, and some of that energy working out across iowa, nebraska, down into oklahoma and kansas, as well as texas, as we head through the evening. A couple of isolated storms, some of that energy not all the way out yet, so well be on guard. But the tornado risk looks fairly low for tonight. Tomorrow is a different story, a much greater risk, a bigger area for our sunday. Lots of folks outside with plans they need to be weather aware. In particular, around the arklatex and across the state of arkansas, this is the highest risk zone. We could be talking about some strong tornadoes, large hail, and widespread severe storms across a big area. On monday, we continue to watch this work its way to the east. Midsouth, memphis, down across parts of mississippi, toward jackson, perhaps shreveport also seeing those storms. All told, as we head through tonight, tomorrow, and monday, 22 states in at least a slight risk of Severe Weather from the Storm Prediction Center and 10 in a moderate risk. A tremendous area, and the rainfall prodigious here, jim. Were talking 25 inches of rain for a lot of folks. So well also watch the threat of flashflooding. Axelrod up until now, its been a slow start to the Severe Weather season. Any risk of complacency . I think there is. You know, even for folks who are so used to seeing Severe Weather, its been a while. A recordslow start to the season. There have been no deaths due to tornadoes so far in 2014, and jim, that is a streak we want to keep alive in more ways than one. Axelrod eric fisher keeping an eye on the weather picture for us. Thank you, eric. History will be made at the vatican tomorrow. For the first time two living popes, benedict and francis, will preside at a canonization ceremony during which two former popes, john xxiii and john paul ii, will be elevated to sainthood. Alan pizzey reports on the growing excitement. Reporter theyve come from far and wide for an event that is as much a street party as it is a religious ceremony. The singing and dancing is spur of the moment. The fact that so many can celebrate is the result of serious planning. Nearly four and a half thousand police are on duty. 200 first aid volunteers, along with dozens of ambulances and temporary medical facilities are available to treat everything from exhaustion to child birth. Thousands of flowers have to be placed in careful order to grace the area around the altar. As if there wasnt enough work setting out the places and spaces for ordinary people, the organizers also have to cater for 93 national delegations, including 31 heads of state and government, among them two sets of royalty. Among the mere mortals, joan lewis began preparing on a school trip when she took a rare color photo of john xxiii 53 years ago. And i dont know what camera i had some little brownie camera or Something Else but i pointed it up and got him in the chair and just his wonderful arms reaching out and that wonderful smile. Reporter for those who missed such a chance, two priests have come up with a traveling photoop. It may not be evident in the gathering throng, but canonizing the two popes is not universally acclaimed. Victims of the sex abuse scandal reject the elevation of john paul ii. Barbara blane is the director of the Survivors Network for those abused by priests. He refused to punish any of the predators or their enablers, and he didnt denounce and remove sexual predators from ministry. Reporter even some of the faithful have complained that the canonization process was fast tracked. Church historian father Robert Dodaro insists that proper procedures were followed. There was no shortcut in the sense that one day pope francis walked into his office and said, i think were going to canonize both these men together on this day. No. Reporter to be there on the day he did choose, the faithful are preparing to spend the night on the street, although they wont get much sleep. Alan pizzey, cbs news, vatican city. You dont need to worry. Ukraines government and the u. S. Axelrod naturally, the white house wants to push back against the idea the president is having trouble in the Foreign Policy arena. Are there Foreign Policy successes he can point to right now . Reporter jim, top officials concede there are very few bright spots. In the middle east, the president s monthslong effort to broker a peace deal between the israelis and the palestinians has fallen apart. In syria, the bloody civil war rages on. The dictator president , bashar alassad, appears to have a stronger grip on power than he did almost three years ago when president obama called on assad to step down. Here in asia, the president has offered strong words of defense for japan and south korea in the face of potential threats from north korea and china. Those words were heartily welcomed in tokyo and seoul.
