foot ire broke out. they opened the door and we went down the emergency chutes. >> terrifying touchdown. the on board emergency as a delta flight lands in atlanta and what caused the jet liner to catch fire. battered, but not beaten. nearly a week after a tornado, the encouraging signs that joplin, missouri, is getting back on its feed. good evening. time again to pay attention crossing the bay bridge. lanes have been redrawn and this weekend drivers will be diverted. don knapp is on treasure island to explain how the new configuration is going to work. >> about an hour from now, they are pulling back the concrete barriers and opening up that brand-new stretch of temporary highway and motorists will be doing nothing more than jogging. should be a piece of cake. >> this is traffic coming off the bay bridge on the oakland side today as seen from chopper 5. drivers may have paid little attention to those newly paveed lanes on their right. starting tonight, they'll begin driving on them. >> probably around midnight, you'll start to see us take lane eastbound coming off of the bay bridge. we are going to be moving all five lanes of traffic to the south. >> caltrans put this animation on bay bridgeinfo.org to see how it will work. directed to jog a bit to the right. on to the new thousand foot long stretch of lanes. caltrans does not intend to slow traffic. >> selected eastbound lens will be shut down overnight, but traffic is expected to move smoothly. >> the reason we're doing this is to gain a little time on our construction schedule and open the entire bridge at one time. by moving all of the traffic to the south with this detour and one we'll do early next year. we can put a construction team inbetween the bridge and complete a part of the bridge that will take an additional six months to do. >> what about traffic heading west? that's coming, too. >> early next year, westbound, we're going to build out the bridge a little bit. shift traffic over, and then once we made that traffic shift, we are going to surgically remove part of that structure. and that's what is going to give us the space to put a construction crew inbetween the two bridges. > caltrans is taking no chances on what is a little more than a jog in the road. >> we have to take extra caution in making sure people understand that their commute is going to change. it's been the same for 50 years. we have been under construction for a while, but we want people to know. >> so tonight, they get that extra roadway eastbound, that's the detour, and after the first of the year, the roadway westbound. those two roadways should stay in service for two years until the bridge is completed. the original completion date was in 2013. should be about six months earlier than that. ann. >> don, i have to cross that bridge later tonight, i'll let you know how it goes. thanks, don. bart riders will also see delays this weekend. crews are getting maintenance and making repairs. now the work will start after the last train tonight and tomorrow, but won't wrap up until 2:30 in the afternoon tomorrow and monday. riders should be prepared for delays of up to 40 minutes. the flight was fine until the very end. something terribly went wrong and happened as a delta jet touched down in atlanta. the plane caught fire, injuring four people, but tonight there are conflicting reports over what sparked the flames. >> i just thought we need to get off the plane. >> a fiery emergency on the tarmac, flames and black smoke spewing from the jet. the plane experienced trouble with its landing gear on approach to hartsfield-jackson airport in atlanta. >> they kept telling us there was a situation and the fire broke out, they opened the doors and we went down the emergency chute. >> they were evacuated and bussed to the terminal after a bumpy landing. >> by the time the plane got stopped, there was smoke in the cabin and you could smell burned rubber. >> firefighters extinguished the flames with foam in less than a minute. >> i'm lucky i had my stuff with me and going home, but there are people that were flying to paris and other places and it's going to be a listening time until they get their luggage. it's national safety board investigation. >> delta says an over heated brake caused the fire. the faa thinks otherwise. it says a tire blew on landing. investigators say the plane will be taken to a maintenance facility to be examined. >> well none of the four injured passengers needed to go to the hospital. also in atlanta, a model celebrating her 30th birthday has died after falling out of a 10th floor window from the upscale w hotel. witnesses tell police lashawna and another woman were play wrestling when they both crashed through the window. the second woman survived, but suffered critical injuries. she leaves behind a 15-year-old daughter. tomorrow marks one week since the joplin, missouri, tornado. they dropped the death toll from 142 to 139. many victims are being identified with more than 100 people still listed as missing. ben tracy on the slow signs of progress. >> these are the sounds of resilience. just three days after the tornado, darren cullen decided it was time to get moving. his wife's beauty salon was cut down by the twister. now it's growing again. >> a lot of people standing around staring a the the rubble and at some point we'll have to roll up our sleeves and start throwing stuff to the road and move on with our lives. >> some are moving on the hard way. today 59-year-old dean wells was layed to rest. he died in his orange apron when the tornado tore through the home's home depot. >> wish it was him. i wish it was him. >> but even his one life ends, a new one together begins today in joplin. >> there's been a lot of obstacles, but we finally made it. >> aaron and brock were high school sweethearts. aaron shot this video last sunday as they ran through the streets of joplin searching for his sister. >> it was pure chaos. >> they found her and also grabbed brooke's wedding dress from the tailor on main street. they are getting married today. they thought about canceling, but this is just what their town needs. >> everyone is ready to do something happy. we had half the people helping us out. my sister, her brother, a bunch of the people attending the wedding and everyone wanted to do it. >> because joplin is already showing it can shoulder even the heaviest of loads. >> we're going to rebuild and it has to start somewhere. >> and they plan to build it quickly. they expect to have this business finished in 45 days. ben tracy, cbs news, joplin, missouri. >> president obama traveled to joplin tomorrow for his first look at the destruction. back in the u.s. this afternoon following a week long trip to europe. his last stop was popa land polland. we are getting breaking news. a suspicious package has been found near 18th and castro right by the bank of america branch. the call came in just a few minutes ago. there are no reports of any threats, but witnesses tell us a one block radius of the area is closed off right now. we are monitoring the situation. we'll bring you an update if we get one during this newscast. >> checking other bay area headlines, a bittersweet commencement ceremony at san jose state. received -- university also announced scholarships have been set up to honor the memories of 25-year-old cindy and 26-year-old carl williams. they were killed inside a university parking garage by her husband who then turned the gun on himself. >> the highway patrol says it made fewer dui arrests for the start of the long holiday weekend. 52 drivers were sited overnight for suspicion driving under the influence. last night at check point in memory of a nine-year-old girl killed by a drunk driver netted two arrests. and they are clearing the air of it at the port of oakland. a new program has been launched this week that allows containerships while docked and plug into cleaner burning electrical power. the switch to shoreline power will eliminate thousands of pounds of toxic emissions each year. an airman from northern california has been killed in afghanistan. 32-year-old tech sergeant from citrus heights died when an improvised device detonated. he has been in afghanistan since january. he was due to return home this summer. >> honoring those who died in the line of duty was the goal of a traditional and touching memorial day ceremony. thousands of scouts scanned out across the cemetery today to place american flags on each of the 138,000 graves. >> we are just showing how much we care and that what they've done for our country isn't just looked away. they are true heros to us. >> about 2500 boy scouts, girl scouts, and cub scouts took part in a decline, but they may put the squeeze on summer vacation plans. analysts say the average family spends $369 on gas last month. but that's up from $201 in april 2009. the latest survey shows gas averaging $3.97 nationwide. that is slower than a few weeks ago, but about $1 more than this time last year. for some people, it's not gas, but food that is increasingly unaffordable. as prices rose at the grocery store, more and more people are going hungry. one of the bay area's most affluent communities is stepping in and helping out. >> organic celery. >> a lot of people at pantries never i can carry the food back to my place. >> his place is a tent in the forest. and then there are the seniors who can't make ends meet. >> right now i'm waiting for my ssi and just a few more days. this will tide me over until then. >> marin county has been known as an affluent community. the lowest in two years and the lowest in california, but still there's lots of people who need help. >> that's the stereotype, then there's the reality. the reality is something very different. i think that all of us have to wake up to the needs that are here. >> so many people competing for jobs right now that i find it makes it harder. we can't walk into a place anymore and ask for a job. >> the food bank hopes to open three more pantries, using volunteers and donated space. >> we want them to be accessible to the families who need them. >> if it can help a little bit, we are all over it. >> in fair fax, cbs 5. >> the governor's plan to balance a state budget by closing state park may have hit a snag. the federal government says california can't close 16 of the parks from the governor's list because federal funds are specifically earmarked to keep them open. one of the parks is candle stick point in san francisco. >> we already need something, an outlet to go to and this is close to home. it's a beautiful site, you know. a lot of people would be hurt by that. >> if the state closes the park, the national park service could declare california ineligible for future federal grants. a wild fire is 2/3 contained tonight. the cofire broke out yesterday, scorched about 1400 acres. hundreds moved on out of the area and that is certainly a good thing. especially for tomorrow. we have our inland areas seeing mid 70s. sunshine abound. warmer conditions definitely on tap. breezier conditions due to a little bit of instability working its way into the area. the bay seeing high 60s. conditions are certainly going to get a lot nicer soon enough. we have that low working its way out of the region. that high pressure system making its way in. going to hold over us for the next two days and things are going to change just a bit. as we take a look at our lows for tonight, we can see that conditions are going to be a little cooler than average. that's okay. we're going to make upward once we hit summer, of course. vallejo, 46 degrees. cloudy conditions for tonight, but clearing up nicely later tonight into tomorrow morning. let's take a look at what we can expect. high conditions for the south bay looking good. 67 for palo alto. let's take a look at what we can expect in the east bay. we have 69 -- we have 69 for a lot of places. let's move on into the north bay. those conditions are looking really good. again trending a little warmer for today, but also very breezy indeed. here is a look at your seven- day forecast. your extended forecast. we have warmer conditions and then we've got some rain showers making their way into the forecast for tuesday through
