The officers in antioch being placed on leave. Wilson walker joins us with where the city goes from here. Wilson . Reporter there is more than a little bit going on here in antioch. The news of the resignation of the chief is big news for everybody. I understand that probably so much damage has been done that he could not repair the damage if he does not have trust. Reporter antioch resident didi crowders job is to deliver Mental Health services, but she has made it her personal quest to fix the Police Department. She says the departure raises questions about the future of reform and something else. As a resident of antioch, i feel like we are getting the short end of the stick because we dont have as much law enforcement. We have the response times and all the things that i see happening. Many of my friends have had their cars broken into. What would you say to folks in the community who feel like things are maybe a little bit untethered right now . That is a real concern people have. Reporter the antioch mayor lamar thorpe has been trying to implement Police Reform for two years now. Nothing comes as a surprise anymore. Reporter the mayor described him as particularly suited to manage antiochs challenges, and now upon word of the resignation the city is 120,000 people. We have various departments. The city is bigger than one Department Head or elected official. Reporter so the city is now without the police chief who was supposed to help them navigate the storm. The question is what actions are in place and will the police chief work with the community to Start Building trust again . Reporter over and martin is there will be protesters, and back here, the effort to reform the department goes back to square one with the search for leadership at the top of the department. So another step forward and another step back. It just keeps going here in antioch, where as we mentioned, the effort to pull together the Police Department goes on. Thanks so much. Back in april, the police chief said he wanted to see the department through the scandal. This is what he said when he sat down with katie nielsen. This doesnt have to be your battle. You can walk away. I could walk away now, but i choose to stay. I am committed to the organization. I am committed to the profession. I feel that everything, all the experiences, all the opportunities throughout my career, i feel that they have all culminated into this moment. I dont believe anything happens by chance. This was this was supposed to be. We will have all the latest developments from antioch on our website, kpix. Com. In oakland, another shooting along 580 now under investigation by chp. Witnesses reported somebody firing a gun from a car. It happened in the westbound lanes near grand avenue and traffic was stopped for 30 minutes while officers investigated but all lanes have since reopened with no arrests at this time. This was the latest in a string of oakland freeway shootings including last friday when an eightyearold was shot during a rolling gun battle. In san jose they are dealing with yet another deadly crash. This will be near capital expressway and snell avenue around 1 00 this morning. Both drivers were taken to the hospital where one died of their injuries. The other remains in critical condition. The cause of the crash has not yet been determined. This marks san joses 28th deadly crash of the year. Turning to the weather, the deadly heat is starting to return to parts of the bay area and is only going to get hotter. The flat fire is sending plenty of smoke into northern california. As of this morning there was no containment. Yeah, the hot weather tends to trap the ground smoke along with a lot of other urban pollutants. Today the air quality was mostly in the moderate category. Some of the dots are tilting towards that orange hue. Whether it is wildfire smoke or groundlevel ozone. Both will be present tomorrow. That is the reason for that alert. Temperatures are going to heat up. It is going to send temperatures to around five degrees above average in San Francisco and oakland , but further inland it is about 12 degrees above average, close to 90 in san jose and 100 degrees in concord tomorrow. Many parts are under a heat advisory. This is not the type of extreme heat that we had last weekend and a couple weeks before that but it is still dangerously hot if you overexert yourself. We will track this all in the full forecast. Paul, thanks so much. Lets take a live look from capitol hill where Robert F Kennedy testified at a house hearing on online censorship. Kennedy has been under fire for making a false claim about how covid19 was engineered to target certain ethnic groups. Natalie brand has the details from capitol hill. Reporter Robert F Kennedys appearance on capitol hill comes days after his false claim that covid19 was engineered to spare jewish and Chinese People. Covid19 was targeted to attack caucasians and black people. Reporter kennedy quickly defended himself, arguing that his remarks were misconstrued. In my entire life i have never uttered a phrase that was either racist or antisemitic. Reporter that democratic lawmakers pressed him on the comments. This echoes the same slander of calling a race and that and Chinese People somehow managed to avoid a disease that causes death. Reporter democrats say he is getting a chance to amplify controversial views. They intentionally chose to elevate this rhetoric to give these harmful and dangerous views a platform in the hallways of the u. S. Congress. This is a hearing on censorship that began with an effort and a formal motion from the other side of the aisle to censor mr. Kennedy reporter Kennedy Still trails biden in polls by a wide margin, but he is made gains among those who view the president as too old and those who are frustrated over inflation. A federal grand jury met today to decide whether to indict former President Trump over his role in january 6th and diligent efforts to overturn the 2020 election. The former president says he received a target letter from the Justice Department. A senior from source says the letter cites three federal statutes. Conspiracy to defraud the u. S. , deprivation of rights under color of law, and witness tampering and obstruction of official proceedings. The target letter typically indicates an investigation is in its final stages. The prosecution has interviewed so many witnesses, looked at so much documentary evidence. If they bring these charges it means they absolutely believe that they can prove this beyond a reasonable doubt. Over the past year the Justice Department has spoken to trumps inner circle, from white house aides to the former vice president. They have also interviewed various state officials. In the meantime, someone in california woke up richer after winning a Powerball Ticket that was sold in Southern California. Anne, we understand several Winning Tickets were sold here in the bay area as well yeah, california did well. The big winner was down in l. A. The only one to hit all six numbers. The winner has not yet come forward to claim the 1. 8 Million Dollars jackpot. They can choose between a lump sum of 516 million or an annuity. The Convenience Store is also a winner with the owner expected to get 1 million for selling the lucky ticket. I have to sell more items. As for the winners in the bay area, three of the tickets matched the winning numbers. One was sold at a 7eleven in santa clara, a safeway and a liquor store. Those of us who missed out on the jackpot, there is another one coming tomorrow, a megamillions drawing worth 720 million, liz. All right, anne, thank you so much. Still ahead, bay area students taking a stand against gun violence. Why they say progress comes with painful conversations. And a big line outside a goodwill facility in the east bay providing desperatelyneede d help for residents looking for a fresh start. 50 years after the death of bruce lee, how the martial arts legend is being remembered in salolonpas lidococaine flex. A susuper thin, flexible p h with maxaximum ototc strengthth lidocainee ththat contoururs to the b by to relelieve painn riright where it hurts. And did d we mentionon, it re, really stiticks . Salolonpas, itss good medidi. Big turnout today in hayward for the opening of a new goodwill store. The latest location is on mission boulevard and has everything you would expect from goodwill. Over 125 eager thrusters were in line before the store opened to snag the hidden gem. The store also highlighting the Career Opportunities they offered to the community. We caught up with employees who say the store offered them a Second Chance after spending decades behind bars. I decided there was no hope for this emma but this is where hope came in and. That blew me away right then and there. That was kenneth. He said he has been with goodwill for a year and it has been going better than imagined. It is perfect and it allows me to give back to the community and make things right with everybody. Goodwill says they consider employing former inmates, addicts, and anybody else who might find employment. Drifting is a way to accomplish that goal. Apple growers in nevada say the sun is giving the fruit a sunburn. The good news is it will not ruin the entire crop, because they can prune trees to create more shade for the apples, but it will lower the yield. You get a white spot that burns a hole in the tomato. Tomatoes and apples are really the worst. Rowers also say they are having trouble keeping cucumbers alive. Right now they are planting new ones that should be ready in the fall. Lets go to Death Valley National park marking its second potentially heatrated fatality. Police said a los angeles resident had finished hiking the trail and because it was so hot, emergency crews were unable to use their helicopter. They began cpr but were unable to save him. As we get another heat wave, some areas are getting worse than ever. This is because of the effect known as the heat island. Reporter driving through southeast village, you see this. Holmes exposed to the sun. Heat islands are caused by the presence of very dense materials like concrete or asphalt that have been laid down decades before. Reporter he says it is no coincidence that heat islands are often set in communities of color. That is why neighborhoods like curtis and land park are covered with a canopy of trees and meadow view is surrounded by little greenery. These areas tend to be about 15 degrees hotter than areas outside the heat islands. People plan shade t■rees around their homes to reduce energy bills and combat the heat island effect. Reporter the sacramento heat Energy Management district is working to solve the impact of the heat from neighborhood to neighborhood. One example elk grove, which highlighted cool pavements in their parking lots. Reporter experts say that lighter pavement reflects the sun better. Cool roofs also have the same effect. Changing the way we configure buildings so that they allow air to move through. Reporter these islands will not be a vacation from the heat that is only getting hotter. And we check in with paul heggen. I think we take it for granted sometimes, the importance of having shade trees in our neighborhood. The densest parts of the bay area tend to get that free air conditioning. Even tran48 some impact from the air off the bay. Other inland parts of california, the heat will be on. The temperatures take off beginning tomorrow. It was a significant warmup today but lets take a look at the warmup for tomorrow when temperatures will be at 100 degrees. We are back to 90 degrees next week and the temperature will be slightly below average. It is normally a fairly hot time of year to begin with but if we are a couple degrees below normal we will take that. We just have to get to hot days in store for us tomorrow and saturday. In terms of the heat risk, this is how we categorize things. Basically it is the threat of overexertion. It is mostly in the moderate category for parts of the bay area tomorrow with similar conditions on saturday. The last couple of encounters with this heat dome over the past few weekends, there has been more highs. This will not be quite as extreme, just something you have to exercise caution around when you deal with these temperatures getting up to 100 degrees in the trivalley and also the delta. The heat begins to back down and there are still patches of that moderate heat risk. We have both the wildfire smoke drifting down from the flat fire in southwestern oregon and the ground level ozone trapped overhead. So air quality should be moderate tomorrow for everybody else. Temperatures are already pretty hot inland. 96 and 97 degrees, respectively. 70s in oakland and only 60s downtown. Once again this is just the inland heat wave. Pretty comfortable temperatures down there if you are heading to the red soxas game. They are now taking on the houston astros. Temperatures are around 70 degrees, backing down into the 60s. The fog is very confined to around the bay. The weight of the atmosphere is quashing the marine layer. Where it does sneak into the inland valleys, it will not last long. Temperatures warm up in a hurry. I think you will see the sun breaking through. Temperatures drop down mostly to the 50s, which is normal for this time of year. Upper 80s to around 90 degrees down the peninsula and the south end of the bay with temperatures near or above 90 degrees in the santa clara valley. Temperatures in the upper 90s and low 100s are more widespread. 103 degrees tomorrow in brentwood. 70 in San Francisco. That sounds pretty nice. Temperatures are mostly in the low 90s in north bay until you go further north, where you are likely to get close to 100 in windsor or close to 100 for napa county and many inland parts of Mendocino County and lake county. The warmup is modest and then back to normal temperatures for the first part of next week. Pretty normal late july weather will come to the bay area, which means temperatures in the 60s and 70s with mostly 80s further inland. Couple of alert days tomorrow and saturday because of the inland heat advisory. Once again , the temperature is still in the 60s along the coast. Still ahead, a major Hollywood Studio accuses of shady activity. Why they are now under investigation for trimming trees. And the martial arts icon born right here in sa which hotel . Oh did somebody say which hotelel . Im m great at. Dance toto your faveves in ththe spalikeke bathroom. M. or enjoy l local crcraft beerss with b breathtakining viewews at the c cambria. Bobook direct t at choicehehote. The actors and Writers Strike are targeting silicon valley, which is no coincidence. Today the demonstrators marched outside the headquarters of netflix in los gatos. This centers around the use of a. I. To replace real people and make sure that everybody is paid fairly as streaming becomes the dominant way people consume entertainment. A. I. And technology are imperiled for working people in america. This is going to determine the terms and conditions about how we work in the 21st century with technology and how we make sure that workers are not eviscerated and replaced with computers. Back in los angeles, you are looking at a stretch of sidewalk outside universal studios. It has become a picket line hotspot. These trees seen lining the sidewalk just got a trim at now it is alleged that the studio purposely trimmed the trees to get rid of the shade that has been protecting the workers who have been picketing under the hot california son. We cannot find work orders done for this particular tree trimming, which is problematic. In Southern California we have a lot of laws governing trees, where to plant them, what you can do to them. The fact that there is not a lot of paperwork here is highly problematic. The city limits do not include the stretch of barnum boulevard where the trees are trimmed, but he says he has consulted with other l. A. Political leaders about the trimming. Fans around the world remembering bruce lee on the 50th anniversary of his death. In chinatown there is a mural on display. You can find it in an alley near joyce street. This mural will also be a featured spot in an augmented reality tour of chinatown produced by the Chinese Historical Association of america. Fans from around the world gathered in front of a statue of lee in hong kong today. Some fans travel thousands of miles just to be there. So we have to remember him and we have to tell the new generation about him and we have to carry on his spirits. Bruce lee died in hong kong on july 20th, 1973. Still ahead at 5 00, bay area students having difficult conversations. Why they say it is a crucial part of stopping the cycle of gun violence. Every person can make a change when it comes to gun violence. s in and a heated debate over right now on cbs news bay area, a suspect in a deadly shootout in San Francisco has been rearrested. Todays announcement. The u. S. Is facing a shortage of critical drugs, including cancer treatment. Why that problem will likely get worse. Plus it is not a Religious School district. It is a public cool district. A showdown over textbooks regarding harvey milk. But first it is a powerful discussion hitting home for way too many children. Many children across the country are standing up against gun violence. We first told you about the freedom school, a Summer Program inside San Franciscos First Baptist church that gives kids a safe space to talk about
