Right now at 5 30, all across the country, people are counting down the hours until mondays total Solar Eclipse. On monday, day will turn in tonight for a few minutes, a total Solar Eclipse will travel along the path of totality stretching from texas to maine. And millions of americans are expected to travel to spots along that path to catch a glimpse. Aaa is warning drivers to expect more traffic and the faa is telling travelers to expect delays at airports. Small towns from texas to the midwest all the way to new england are bracing for a rush of visitors. Today i think the rate is 80 per night. And the night before the eclipse, how much is it . It is around 500. And it sold out. A new survey finds Many Americans are not aware of the potential danger, more than one third of those asked did not know that looking at a Solar Eclipse without proper protection can cause permanent eye damage. Doctors say sunglasses are not enough, look for certified Solar Eclipse glasses and viewers with filters that meet International Safety standards. The retina is what gives us our vision and thats the thing we are most concerned about, the rays impacting the retina, there were people that suffered vision loss after the 20 17th eclipse. We will see a partial eclipse and the bay area will have plenty of viewing parties for the cosmic event. The space and Science Center is holding a special party and visitors can watch and take part in some special science demonstrations. They will provide eclipse safety glasses so you will have a chance to look at the interstellar spectacle through a telescope. It reminds us that we are part of a much larger universe, there are things going on without any human involvement at all, and that certainly is fun to stop and think about. In the bay area, the eclipse will start around 10 15 a. M. And last for two hours. Remember, monday will be our last chance to experience a Solar Eclipse in our own backyard until 2045. And the weather is key to any eclipse viewing experience. Darren peck joins us with a look at the conditions. The good thing about monday, by the time we have gone to that point, system is totally gone. And we will clear out. We should have clear skies and the clouds will not be a factor for us when it comes to viewing the eclipse. What is important to understand about this eclipse, besides all the stuff we were just covering about the very real risks of making the mistake of trying to look at it without proper eyewear is what we are going to get at home is not really quite the spectacle that a total Solar Eclipse really is. Heres what its going to look like for us on monday. As the mockup shows you how much of the sun is going to be covered by the moon. You can see it is a miss, we are getting a partial Solar Eclipse. It is going to be noticeable, it is noteworthy that it is great for kids and field trips to gain an awareness and learn about these things, but in terms of the real significance of the show, now im going to show you what dallas is going to experience, because dallas is in the pathway. When the moon covers the sun perfectly, it is such a rare and unique experience, we were talking about 2017, when you get to this point, when the moon really does go in total eclipse of the sun, you can see stars, you can see constellations that you dont normally see in the summer because when they are up, you never see them, you can see or ryan in the sky. The other thing he saw was a flare coming off of the sun for the two minutes, you could see the corona which is the atmosphere of the sun and he was able to see it with the naked eye. It is a totally different experience, this is why people travel and pay 500 for a hotel room that is normally 80 per night, the difference between the experience. We are going to have a celestial event but it is not really what everybody is going nuts over. And you can see where that path is going to be. Theres going to be clouds in the midsection of the country and people are going to have to watch the forecast and maybe make some last minute adjustments. But, theres your path of totality, here we are at 30 range. It is great for kids, it is not like the super bowl though. That is it, back to you. Ever wonder what the total eclipse would look like from the sky . Passengers on the special delta flight will get the chance on monday, the plane will give passengers a very unique view of the eclipse from the best seats possible. We are going to be able to provide a very unique experience. Itll be the flight of a lifetime. And cbs news will have complete coverage of the eclipse all throughout the day on monday, it starts on cbs mornings, starting at 7 00 a. M. , then at 11 00, join Norah Odonnell for a special report, total eclipse of the heartland. And of course you can join us on monday for eclipse watch, our special coverage starts at 10 00 a. M. Streaming on cbs news bay area, and you can find us on the free app or pluto tv. Bmo lets get straight to first alert doppler on this first alert weather afternoon, and for good reason, a very impressive showing of thunderstorms on the east side, moving through the east bay valley. Lets get a closer perspective on this and find out where some of the more notable reign of the afternoon is, there is a complex in the trivalley right now, we started watching that about 2 1 2 hours ago, when a thunderstorm developed over napa. That continued to move down 680, walnut creek, now it is in the trivalley. We are likely going to see more redevelopment, but notice where it is, if you are in the immediate day, there is nothing, you even have some breaks of blue sky. But there is a very definite focus here over on the east bay. And when we put it into the futurecast, we can pick up these different cells that have the potential to redevelop, so the highresolution forecast model does put together the ability for some more systems, to develop once again over the same exact areas. So that is the way the rest of tonight will go. And even those will turn off and we will be done. It is going to get cold tomorrow morning, just to give you the overview on what it is going to feel like for your saturday morning, and you already know if you were up early today, because the numbers tomorrow are very similar to where we were on friday. A lot of low 40s for most of us, the inland valleys, theres your trivalley, going into the upper 30s. Low 40s along the coast. San francisco will be in the low 40s, which is cold enough for the city and of course the north bay valley, for santa rosa, that is going into the mid30s. Another cold morning, but that should be the last one. Things are going to get gradually warmer in the mornings and in the afternoons, the only thing for the weekend, there is a weak system that is going to try to bring a little bit more rain late saturday night. Lets get a closer look. Theres that band of rain, that is saturday afternoon, it is way out on the far northwest coast saturday afternoon. But overnight, late saturday into sunday, that line of showers gets here and we will see a light band of rain moving across the bay. And in the Early Morning hours of sunday. When we get to sunday, i dont have rain, that is a quarter till five in the morning. And theres this week front trailing a few showers. It would be a shame to put some rain on sunday, because look at the rest of sunday, plenty of blue skies and that will set us up for the eclipse on monday. So that is good news in terms of our forecast for that, to be able to experience a partial eclipse. We are not getting the total Solar Eclipse but we are going to have a pretty decent show that is going to be worth checking out. Notice how warm it is going to be next week. So, weve been talking about the mid70s, the last few days it was low 80s, now we are going to push the envelope on this a little bit, because i think you can start saying mid 80s. Back to you. Now lets go out to oracle park for giants opening day. Reporter hello from oracle park, what a perfect day for baseball, more than 40,000 fans packed this place and they were rewarded. Lets not forget, San Francisco also very much a 49ers town and we saw that before baseball was even played, fred warner and deebo samuel on the field for the first pitch, although with fred, more of a spiked first pitch, Matt Williams had no chance of stopping that one, it looked ugly. This was pretty cool, the first punt, a perfect splash into a cove, and with that, time to play ball. Nobody on this team is hotter than Michael Conforto right now. Then we pick things up in the eighth inning, tied at two. Tyler rogers is in for jordan hicks, and this is a reminder at home, you dont have to light up the laser gun if you want the rangers to go down bad. That is a bad look for him. Autumn of the ninth, Thairo Estrada hammers one into the gap, matt chapman hustled all the way around to score. The giants beat the padres. Did you ever envision what today would look like for you and could you have imagined it ending like it did . Sure, i was hoping we would have won, obviously, but i didnt expect the thing on the scoreboard. I think hes ready for it to be just an everyday thing. Bob melvin enjoyed his first home opener at orville park, he did spend over a decade in oakland, so he feels for as fans who are on the verge of losing their team to sacramento. As you watch this stuff play out in oakland, what goes through your head . It is sad. I really enjoyed the coliseum, so you know, if that is the case, that is too bad. Opening day in detroit took on a much different feel, this guy didnt care how cold it was, the as had their chances late, but they went down swinging to end the game, oakland hitting 164 with runners in scoring position. The as are just 1 and 7, but a much different feeling at oracle park, so many fans going home happy, you cant draw it up any better. Up next, lets take a look from oracle park where the giants were victorious in todays home opener after a walkoff win in the bottom of the ninth, it is also the first time the home fans got the chance to see their new Center Fielder in person.
