Active shooter on campus. The call came in around 10 a. M. One ucla Spokesman Says two people are dead. Late word that one of those people may be the gunman. It may have been a murder suicide. Shots rang out this morning. Teachers and students hid in classrooms and tried to lock the doors. I thought that i saw a group of s. W. A. T. Saying just get away from the area. The city of los angeles has been placed on a tactical alert citywide which merely means [ indiscernible ] allocate resources where we need them to make sure we can still handle the calls for service in all the division. Our tactical investigators are here working the scene. [ very loud background noise ] [ inaudible ] the shooting started in a science building. The fbi is on the scene. These are live pictures from the ucla campus. Streets abandoned, heavily armed officers approaching some campus buildings. Some officers arriving in armored s. W. A. T. Vehicles. We have a report from a reporter on the scene. Reporter we are still right here at Westwood Plaza right at the border to a lot of classrooms and dorms and really the staging area for all the firefighters, paramedics, s. W. A. T. Officers. What this seems to be is students are in a panic. A lot will change with this type of situation. There are victims killed at this point. Other students have been taking to social media posting photos of them in lockdown. One student using his belt to lock the classroom door. Still out here it seems as if a lot of questions still to be answered. People dont know whats going on. The focus is to make sure the students are safe that those students still on campus are safe and locked down, staying in their classrooms, or simply not coming here to the scene at all. Again, the latest information, the two people dead on the ucla campus, one may be the shooter. Well continue to monitor information from the campus. Well have an update later in the newscast. The other big story, graphic new details about the shooting of two Novato High School students. One student was killed and now word the suspects tried to mutilate his body. Authorities this morning released a photo of the outstanding suspect 19yearold javier guevera. Kpix 5s anne makovec is live with new details on a machete used in the crime. Anne. Reporter three of four defendants were in court here in san rafael this morning. Several family members were in the audience and there was a very high level of security in the courtroom. A lot of police officers, bailiffs and sheriffs officers. We did hear more about what may have happened in this attack, including the possibility that a in shetty and gun were used a machete and gun were used. The defendants, Juan Carlos Martinez henriquez and edwin ga vair are are students at the high school but are accused of shooting and killing one of the classmates, one injured. Now sources say that one of the suspects used a machete to chop off the heads and hands of guevera. The complaint accused Juan Carlos Martinez henriquez of intentionally causing disability and disfigurement and deprivation of a limb, organ and body member of the victim. Today one of the teenagers attorneys acknowledged the rumors that this could be payback for a recent Sexual Assault. Just dont know anything about whether there was a Sexual Assault and if there was retaliation for the prior Sexual Assault. Reporter the only action taken in court today a protective order filed for the teenager who was wounded in the attack in which the prosecutor mentioned possible gang ties. The outstanding suspect, javier guevera, is considered armed and dangerous and he is a member of a gang known as ms13 and a relative of suspect edwin guevera. Charges him with first degree murder with special circumstances, and with mayhem and attempting afrom avated mayhem, and aggravated mayhem and the use of a deadly weapon, machete. Investigators searching again this morning for the vallejo teenager kidnapped last week. Police are also releasing a new photo of the suspects car. A gold saturn with bumper stickers they hope to get tips from anyone. Another picture shows the type of backpack pearl pinson was carrying when she was abducted. The man who investigators say kidnapped pinson was shot to death by sheriffs deputies in Santa Barbara county in other words the heat is on today. People in the the heat is on today. People in the area preparing for sweltering temperatures. Spring temperatures being pushed aside by a todays of summer. In dublin it will be toasty. It will be in the 90s and later even higher. It is early in the investigation. Many, many questions are unanswered at this point. But i think the important thing for people to take way from this is that the campus is now safe. The issue that has occurred has been contained. We are in the process of releasing the campus back to the students. They are in their finals. This is a very stressful time for them. And we are trying to alleviate that. We do not believe there are there is no evidence to support outstanding suspect at this point, but we are out of an abundance of caution going to continue our search once again, on the ucla campus a shooting ending up with two people dead on the campus. Reporter investigators are trying to figure out how a young boy ended up in the grasp of a more than 420pound gorilla. The encounter which resulted in zoo officials killing harambe ignites a discussion of security. Safety is vetted. Reporter according to the aza, exhibits where animals and visitors are not supposed to come in contact need to have at least one substantial barrier such as a guardrail or fence in place. On saturday, the child made his way past a threefoot fence through several feet of bushes and down a 15foot moat. The exhibit is safe and the barrier is safe. Reporter the zoo has repeatedly defended their security. They need to make that place safe. Reporter but critics such as michael, a cofounder of the activist group stop animal exploitation now, disagrees. Clearly, there are issues with his enclosure. Federal regulations require enclosures within facilities like zoos to have perimeter fences and physical barriers. Reporter the group filed a complaint with the usda monday claiming the cincinnati zoo violated the Animal Welfare act. They point out that the zoo has had incidents in the past including one in march when two polar bears escaped from their inner enclosure for about two hours. No injuries. The association of zoos and aquariums last visited the cincinnati zoo two years ago. At that point, no issues were reported. In cincinnati, ohio, jamie yuccas, kpix 5. The Cincinnati Police also investigating the family of the boy who got inside the enclosure. Its unclear if charges would be brought against the family. A huge sinkhole is disrupting traffic on northbound 5. All lanes are closed south of tracy. The sinkhole is at least 36 feet across. Caltrans says it needs to find out what caused the sinkhole before the repair work can fill in the hole. Lanes will not open before tomorrow. We are expecting hot temperatures this afternoon. Alameda officials believe that the shooting that left two men dead was a murdersuicide on the campus. No word yet on who they were. Police are now in the process of lifting the lockdown.
