This encampment was set up in a very strange place. Reporter we have never seen a homeless encampment like this. First, access is difficult because the only way to get there is off the freeway. Its huge. Nestled in between interstate 880 and highway 87, it stretches more than a quarter mile along the sound wall encompassing nearly 20 acres. Crews say 40 to 50 people have scattered away and they are calling it the jungle part 2. This is the third day of the cleanup and caltrans has already removed 150 cubic yards of mattresses, shopping carts and appliances. The workers say they are nowhere close to being done. Some of the squatters are skilled electricians. Look closely and you can see the cut wires where they sliced into high voltage electrical lines stealing electricity to power ovens and refrigerators. Whats more neighbors say one of the homeless stole a drone delivered to a neighbors porch and buzzed the neighborhood before crashing the drone into a tree. Gabriel aguilar says the squatters are often burning campfires and screaming late into the night right behind his home. Like oh, my god i kill you oh, my god, get out of here so its very bad. Reporter the city says they are making significant strides in moving people out of these encampments. Back in 2013, they counted about 1200 People Living in these camps. But last year that number dropped down to below 800. It feels like theyre chipping away at the problem. We had a decrease in homeless, 15 down between 2013 and 2015. Reporter he says the has dedicated millions to clean up and build temporary and permanent housing. We have a huge challenge here that we face every day. It takes a lot of time, a lot of effort and a lot of resources to make a change in our community. But i think were at the beginning of a very, very promising trend for people in need here. Reporter in san jose, kiet do, kpix 5. The city has been working on Safe Parking Program that will allow people to sleep in their cars. That program set to launch over the summer. In a few hours, a preliminary hearing will likely wrap up for three Santa Clara County correctional deputies accused of beating an inmate to death. Matthew farris, Rafael Rodriguez and jereh lubin are charged with murdering Michael Tyree last august. In a hearing that started monday, a prosecutor has been arguing that the guards overreacted and resorted to violence after tyree broke jail regulations. Reporter a bystander came to help directing traffic around jane until an ambulance showed up. Now with a fractured clavicle and 5,000 in medical costs, jane learned a lesson about jaywalking and she wants to track down the woman who hit and ran. Police say several pedestrians have been hit in that same area. The family is offering a 5,000 reward for information on the suspected driver. A body turned up in a lake today in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco at about 8 a. M. Park police found the body fully clothed in southlake near king fire drive. Theres an unconfirmed report that the victim was a homeless man who often sat on a bench nearby. So far its not clear how the man died and investigators are not sure whether foul play was involved. The citys medical examiner will try to find out. The man suspected of killing a Richmond Police officer is set to be arraigned this afternoon in solano county. Profiting themselves usually through fees or percentages of donations. But this multibilliondollar industry is largely unregulated. Frankly, its embarrassing.
