At midnight last night crews closed down van ness avenue between ellis and pine streets, and its going to stay that way for 72 hours. Theyre building a pedestrian tunnel in van ness that will eventually conduct sutor house cpmc campus with a future medical office building. A san jose familys dog dies hours after going into the Russian River. The warning going out for this holiday weekend. Parts of the river are toxic. It is the result of a blue green algeobloom. Signs have gone up, advising people to keep thawr kids and pets away from the water. But the warning came too late to save one familys dog, posey. We wont be able to know the river is not safe. You cant listen to authorities when they tell you that everything is fine. Well, the river and beaches still open for recreation, but people are advised to stay out of standing water and avoid any algae they see. A day at the beach ends with a bay area kite surfer flying into oncoming traffic. A strong gust of wind threw him right onto the great highway near San Franciscos ocean beach, then a car hit him. The kite surfer got stuck under the suv. An ambulance took him to a hospital with lifethreatening injuries. It is a relatively safe sport. You definitely need to be a more expert level when you come out in wind like this today. One kite surfer says the man who was hurt probably couldnt reach his emergency release in time. The rust fire burning near fresno has authorities issuing a warning this morning. They are telling labor day catchers to go somewhere else. The fire is the largest wildfire in the state up until this point. It has burned 83,000 acres. Its only 25 contained this morning it. Its causing terrible air quality near that fire. 10 campgrounds around hume lake are closed this holiday weekend. And as the drought drags on, fires have been geghtd worse all across the state been getting worse all across the state. What firefighters are dealing with this fire season. Police believe he is a man who attacked a zip car with a woman inside last week. The man has a long mustache and was wearing khaki shorts. Police hope that this will lead for somebody to come forward. We are trying to get the best still photos that we can of the individual so that you can put those photos out, and were hopeful that either the video or the pictures will jog someones memory. That zip car had 3,000 worth of damages. The woman inside was not harmed. The Santa Clara County sheriff is promising sweeping changes after an inmate was beaten to death. Protesters marched on santa claras main jail yesterday. 31yearold Michael James tyree was found dead in his jail cell last week. The coroner says he suffered Blunt Force Trauma injuries that caused internal bleeding. Inmates family members say the mistreatment of inmates has been going on for years. These guys are constantly filing grievances and complaints and they mostly come back as nothing. Three correctional deputies were arrested on suspicion of murder. The District Attorneys Office says it is reviewing the case and will determine what, if any, charges should be filed. A warning this holiday weekend. The suspect in the pier 14 killing of kate steinle will have to stand trial. A judge says there is enough evidence for Juan Francisco Lopez Sanchez to be tried for seconddegree murder. Steinle was walking with her father when she was shot. Sanchez says he found the gun wrapped in a tshirt and it went off accidentally. His trial could hinge on whether or not the jury believes him. Police have arrested one person involved in a deadly shooting at Sacramento City college, but the shooter is still at large. The shooting started after an argument between two groups of men on thursday. Two men were injured in the shooting and another was killed. Police arrested one of the injured men on charges of assault with a deadly weapon. Police are investigating if the shooting was at all gang related. Police looking for a couple of thieves after a moving van ends up getting stolen off a Street Corner in oakland. Shawna hayes filled a 15foot u haul with all of her belongings. This morning there are no bart training running across the bay from now until tuesday morning. The transbay tube is shut down. So no bart service between San Francisco and oakland. Buses will run instead, but youre going to want to add another half hour to your trip. Crews are finishing up track work between the west oakland station and the tube. We are doing the single largest track replacement in bart history. Its 40yearold track and its time to be replaced. So on tuesday what were hoping for is a smoother and quieter and definitely safer ride through the transbay tube. Now lets take a live look this morning at the bay bridge toll plaza. Traffic starting to back up in a couple of of the lanes and its probably going to get worse throughout the day and a lot of people just try to avoid bart and end up in traffic instead. Be aware of that if you are trying to make the trip across the bay. Its going to, again, reopen at 4 00 tuesday morning. Also a heads up to drivers in San Francisco this weekend. At midnight last night, crews closed down van ness avenue between ellis and pine streets. Its a good stretch there. Its going to stay that way for 72 hours now. Theyre building a pedestrian tunnel under van ness that when its all done will connect sutor health cpmc campus with a future medical office building. A couple traffic issues around.
