Happening now in San Francisco, construction on interstate 280 all the southbound lanes of the freeway shut down last night at 9 00 at 4th and king streets. The freeway closed all the way past mariposa street to the pennsylvania avenue onramp until the Tuesday Morning commute. Kpix 5s cate caugiran joins us live. They have a lot of work to do over the big Holiday Weekend. Reporter they do and they are well under way right now. Im hearing a lot of drilling, a lot of work going on. For drivers this will be about 60,000 of them will have to find another way around all of this work. Its also a week where thats going to be a lot of stuff going on. We have giants games, carnival so plan ahead. We have a look at the work thats already being done. Lets break this closure down. Its southbound 280 about a twomile stretch between king and pennsylvania. Those onramps. Caltrans crews are working to replace a bridge hinge to make sure the roadway is safer in case of earthquake. For more on that now we are joined live by caltrans steven williams. Could you talk to us about the work thats going to be done . Yeah. Whats going on now is the demolition of the old structure so they can replace the hinges with new hinges which will enhance the seismic capacity of the structure. Reporter so what should neighbors in this area expect over again the next few days . No later than lunchtime it will be a lot quieter because the demolition activity should have ceased by then. Then what were going to do is install the hinges and pour a new deck surface, pour the concrete, and hopefully that will be settled by 2 00 im sorry, by 5 00 Tuesday Morning. Reporter all right. Santa clara is Suing Companies that make prescription painkillers. The lawsuit says the drugs are pushed for profit. Oxycontin generated more than 3 billion in revenue nationwide in 2010. The lawsuit says the narcotics are so overprescribed, we have become a nation of addicts. You have seen increases in overdose deaths. We have seen babies born with opiate withdrawal. Officials who filed the lawsuit say companies should pay damages to people harmed by the drugs. The amount hasnt been determined. Graffiti vandals in the south bay are running into some sharp opposition. Only on five, kpix 5 reporter kiet do explains how its keeping them from getting to some of their targets. Reporter the bay areas ugliest bridge just got a face lift. With a fresh coat of paint, it looks decent for now but graffiti is creeping in and taggers will be back with a vengeance. Since we first reported on the train overcrossing at 13th street and 101 a year ago, its been the same thing. Repaint, tag, repeat. But why . The answer may be here at the caltrain bridge above 280 near bird avenue. Last year, the infamous tag, rip tomorrowmy, stayed on the greenbridge for months. But now, its been a year and it is spotless. Whats going on . Of the 40 something bridges that caltrain owns, this one is the most secure and most fortified of them all making it the fort knox of railroad bridges. Thats because theres not just one or two but three fences to climb each one riskier than the last. Were hoping that this is a significant disincentive for anyone who might be looking to become a graffiti artist. Reporter that beefy third fence is key in keeping taggers off the catwalk. Compare it to the first bridge and you can see how taggers get around that short stubby fence with barbed wire. So show you how to climb a barbed wire fence. The woman claims employees refused to give her any help and an employee said she didnt call 911 because it was against company policy. The suit asks for more money now to cover the womans injuries which include first and seconddegree burns. Innout is not commenting. Sonoma county prosecutors are Still Deciding whether to file charges against a mother accused of assaulting a boy. Delia garciabratcher appeared in court yesterday and is set to return next month. She is accused of choking an 11 yearold boy at an Elementary School last week. Her lawyer claims she is being framed and that she simply asked the boy to leave her daughter alone. My client is a folk hero to people all over the world for standing up for her daughter. Its that simple. You make her sound like the mother of the year. She is the mother of the year. She is the mother of the year the she did nothing wrong her daughter was being bullied and she confronted the bully. What is wrong with that the woman claims she never touched the boy but only talked with him. Investigators say they have not found any evidence the boy bullied the womans daughter. A woman is doing well at uc San Francisco this morning after successfully giving birth despite being in a coma since march. She had a benign tumor removed months ago and she had a seizure and she went into a coma but yesterday she delivered a baby by csection. She was making eye contact with the baby. Her eyes were wide open and that is fairly new. She grabbed brians cheek. She grabbed his cheek with her hand and she pulled his face down to her face. And she gave him the first hug that he has had since this trauma. Brian landon is the husband and father here. His wifes longterm prognosis is unclear but with every positive development, doctors tell the family to keep their hopes up. Investigators say a wildfire burning near a popular arizona tourist spot was caused by humans. Carter evans reports the fire covered nearly 12 square miles. Changed her name and birthday, illegal married her and fathered their child. After his First Court Appearance his attorney painted quite a different picture. Decade long relationship between 42yearold garcia and the unidentified victim, who is now 25. We have blurred her face for her protection. He treated her like a queen. He was devoted to her. He did what she want. She was happy. She had her own car. Reporter he told reporters that the couple shown here on facebook are going through a difficult divorce and that is why these untruthful accusations he says are being leveled now. Every charge according to the defense lawyer is being denied by Isidro Garcia from the abduction to the series of sexual assaults. The defendant is said to be dumbfounded by the claims made by the woman he calls his wife, the mother of their 3yearold daughter. But we need to keep in mind that this is a victim who has been held against her will for 10 years convinced that she was alone and this was her own ally and, you know, she was in a very difficult situation. And the fact that she found the courage to come forward is, uhm, is wonderful and were very proud of her. And we want to support her. Hayward investigators are trying to figure out how a man was shot and killed and another injured near the southland mall yesterday evening. Officers called out to a traffic accident. Thats when they found a 22 yearold man dead. The second victim a 48yearold had been dropped off at a hospital and is expected to survive. Video shows the moments before Salinas Police shot and killed a man tuesday. Parts may be disturbing. Police tried to stop 44year old carlos mejia after a woman reported a threatening intruder in her home. Officers say they shot him because they were worried about what he would do with his garden shears at a nearby street and bakery. Kpix 5s linda yee reports the suit filed in Orange County accuses five companies of false advertising, unfair competition and creating a public nuisance. Reporter the centers for Disease Control have called it an epidemic, prescription painkillers now the leading cause of drug overdoses. Two counties in the state blame the drugmakers for touting the benefits of the narcotics and trivializing the deadly side effects, specifically addiction. We have seen increases in overdose deaths. We have seen babies born with opiate withdrawal. The focus of this lawsuit is on holding the pharmaceutical industry accountable for their deception, ensuring that doctors and patients have Accurate Information when decisions are being made about their care. Reporter experts in drug treatment agree, america has become reliant on painkillers. But they say taking them away from people who are already addicted will push them to street drugs like heroin. Opiates really are miracle drugs, there is no doubt about that. At the same time, they do carry risks. Reporter San Francisco Health Department Substance Abuse director dr. Phillip coffin has no opinion on the lawsuit. But he says the real issue is getting lost. We need to not be scared to prescribe them when appropriate but not as a first line agent for most pain syndromes. But the counties are resolute in their fight against the drug companies. For the past two decades, these companies have used the tobacco playbook to deceive doctors and patients about the risk and benefits of prescription painkillers like oxycontin and percocet. The third a estimate bollic remembrance as memorial day approaches. Soldiers placed american flags at thousands of graves at Arlington National cemetery yesterday. The third u. S. Infantry regiment performs the flags and tradition every year at this time dating back to 1948. Then they come back and remove each flag after the holiday. In all, more than 220,000 flags are in place right now at both gravesites and niches for cremated remains. The head of the va will give president obama a preliminary report next week on investigations into 26 hospitals. Reporter Veterans Affairs secretary Eric Shinseki took to the vas website thursday vowing to do more for the nations vets. Secretary shinseki said in part, the va is redoubling its efforts with integrity and compassion to earn your trust. But trust in shinseki has been waning amid allegations some Va Medical Centers created phony waiting lists to hide long delays in treatments for veterans. In a cbs news poll, 45 of americans surveyed said they think the va secretary should step down. House Speaker John Boehner said he is considering calling for shinsekis to resign. These are men and women who served our country and [ voice breaking ] we cant just let them out. Weve let them die reporter president obamas deputy chief of staff rob nabors met with the staff at the phoenix medical facility where as many as 40 vets may have died waiting for care. Republican senator marco rubio is pushing the senate to approve a bill passed by the house this week that would give shinseki more flexibility to fix the problem. One of the things he doesnt have is the power to fire executive leadership in his own agency. We want to give him that power. We have not been able to say that for much of this week or last. They have been turning the metering lights on, on the earlier side. Heading out today we are going to watch low clouds and fog beginning to lift. Lots of sunshine making its way into the bay area this afternoon. In fact, its going to be a little warmer away from the coastline today. Some places getting near 90 degrees. I think well see some 90s over the weekend. Low pressure scooting out of town. High pressure moving in for the weekend. So these temperatures will be warming up today. Not only here but around the state. Mid90s into sacramento. 94 into fresno. High country should be a great weekend to do some camping or backpacking temperatures in the 70s and 80s, hot though over the weekend. Low clouds and fog and drizzle early on this morning along the coastline and inside the bay. Think that will start to give way to some sunshine in the afternoon but more clouds on the way into early tomorrow morning. Temperatures are going to be in the 80s inland maybe upper 80s toward brentwood and antioch. A lot of 70s inside the bay and 60s along the coastline. Next couple of days for the Holiday Weekend, looking good a lot of 90s showing up everywhere inland and cooling things off much cooler toward the middle of next week. The fire closed the main highway between sedona and flagstaff and forced business evacuations there as well but other businesses are trying to get the word out that they will be open for the memorial day weekend. Higher humidity and a chance of showers are expected to help firefighters later today. The fire blamed on human activity started tuesday and has burned about 12 square miles so far.
