Black hoping for a win. Good afternoon, im brian hackney. Frank and michelle are off. First at noon, a water main bursts in the middle of the night and people in one neighborhood forced to act fast to protect their homes. Kpix 5 reporter anne makovec is live in San Francisco right now. How are the repairs coming along, anne . Water is back on for most of this neighborhood in the bayview after flooding about a dozen homes downstream. Water started flowing at midnight and didnt stop until around 5 a. M. It sounded like a river running. You would think you were in yosemite. Reporter it was a rude awakening for about a dozen homeowners whose basements, garages and yards flooded, some up to three feet. Ring the bell and we saw like a river in the street. Reporter it all started with a break in a 12 water main at key and keith. One of the staff that watches the system all night saw we were losing water out of a reservoir. Reporter by the time crews arrived, dug up the pipe and shut off the water, a torrent of water was released. A few million gallons. I woke up to water rushing and my car in the middle of it. Reporter the water pressure tore off part of her bumper. It was already loose so the water pushed it out. Reporter the broken main dates back to 1953, part of an aging infrastructure system all over San Francisco. Public entities need to stay on top of things. They need to make sure that they are taking care of their maintenance just like we take care of our homes. Reporter the city says its doing its best to replace some of these old pipes like the one you see behind me. But it takes a lot of money and time. The citys goal is to replace 15 miles of sewer and water pipes each year. Brian . You know, anne, you cant live without water but its as corrosive as battery acid, it seems. In a case like this, who pays for the damage . Reporter initially, the city called in some disaster cleaning specialists to take care of some of the immediate problems and then the homeowners can file a claim with the city and then the city will eventually pay them back but city officials have assured me that most of the people that whose homes they have seen today, they will end up being fully reimbursed.
