Just minutes ago, kpix 5 got this mugshot of 26yearold ammar harris. Las vegas police say harris is responsible for the deaths of three people on the vegas strip a week ago. Among those killed, an aspiring rap artist from the east bay. Las vegas police say a Multi Agency Task force tracked harris to an apartment in North Hollywood at around noon today. Kpix 5s linda yee shows us how investigators got their man. Reporter 26yearold ammar harris was arrested by fbi agents and Los Angeles Police at an apartment complex in studio city. They captured him around midday today. Mr. Harris was located in an area in North Hollywood inside of an apartment. Officers and detectives converged on that area. He was challenged to come out of that area and he did peacefully and was taken into custody. I dont feel like telling anymore. Reporter this Youtube Video released by Las Vegas Police shows harris bragging over a wad of cash. He had been the target of a massive manhunt. Investigators say he killed three people including oakland rapper kenneth cherry. Police say harris fired into the rappers maserati on the Las Vegas Strip last week causing a fiery Chain Reaction crash. The maserati slammed into a taxi which burst into flames killing the driver and his passenger. Investigators say harris argued with cherry earlier in the parking area of a hotel. We believe shortly after the incident that occurred near las vegas, mr. Harris was a fleeing felon. He left las vegas shortly after this event occurred. Now, when exactly he left, im not going to go into that, as well. But what we do know is he did leave las vegas pretty rapidly. Reporter police had already found and talked to three women who were in harris range rover the night of the shooting. Police say harris, a self described pimp, has an extensive violent criminal history including robbery, Sexual Assault and kidnapping. The District Attorney did not say if he will seek the Death Penalty but he said it will be considered. I cant imagine anything much more serious than firing a weapon from a moving vehicle into another moving vehicle on a corner such as las vegas boulevard and flamingo. That is reckless. It disregards human life. There are certain consequences. Reporter we are learning that oakland rapper kenneth cherry had a passenger in his maserati. Police wouldnt identify him but in the criminal complaint against ammar harris, he was accused of shooting and wounding a man. Harris is charged with three murders and attempted murder and other felonies. Given that this case spans multiple states, any idea if it will be tried in vegas or los angeles . Reporter yes. Actually he will be arraigned monday in los angeles but right now, the clark county District Attorney is filing those extradition papers. So the result is that he will be tried in nevada. All right. Reporter Central Valley rice farmers an scientists have come up with a new salmon nursery they say will help baby salmon making their way downstream without affecting the farming schedule. The future is in our hands. Reporter the fields are dry this time of year north of sacramento but ucdavis researchers have flooded an area between the harvest creating a salmon nursery and they say the results are promising. We are on dormant fields that will again be planted to rice come spring but they are producing fat healthy chinook salmon in that off time. Reporter the experiment is huge and just getting around the feral 25 acres can be tricky. Many of the juvenile salmon are implanted with tiny tracking tags. While scientists dont feed the fish, under water, the rice fields are full of bugs. And the stubble provides shelter. And the fish are getting fat. The ones on the left were taken from the Sacramento River while the ones on the right lived in the rice fields. John brennan has farmed this land for decades. And he says its a winwin for everyone. Its farm to rice in the summertime. Flooded early for the ducks and the water birds. It will be flooded later for the fish and it will be drained off and planted to rice again. Reporter if this project proves to be sustainable, it could spread over the 58,000 acres in the area. A major step in restoring the Central Valley salmon. Scientists have nicknamed these fish the flood plain fatties. Cute. But they say the results though are so encouraging that next year, they are going to double the size of this experiment. Youre required to switch to Electronic Payments by march 1 2013. County firefighters are taking on a fast moving 50acre aze in rancho juru breaking news out of Southern California. Youre looking at live pictures from Riverside County where firefighters are now taking on a fastmoving 50acre blaze in rancho jurupa Regional Park burning near hopes and buildings. You can see flames raging now. A Spokesman Says power lines are down in the area at the south end of the park. The fewer was reported 4 the fire was reported at 4 45 this morning. The fire went from 10 to 50 acres in about an hour. 140 firefighters, helicopter and other equipment are dispatched to the fire that is currently sending up billowing smoke visible throughout the region and, of course, those flames and paul says wind right now 5 miles an hour. There is a wind advisory in the hillsides near that area. Well keep you updated on this breaking news out of Southern California. Reporter so what happens when you take a manmade process thats believed to cause significant earthquakes in places that dont have them and bring that process to california . Our hypothesis would be that we could set off earthquakes. Reporter jones predicts these humantriggered earthquakes are likely to be bigger in california since the faults are longer and deeper here. So you think it is possible that using this practice that we know can cause earthquakes on the east coast could potentially set off a large earthquake here . It definitely could. Reporter oil industry spokesman dave kwa says wastewater from fracking has been discharged underground in california for decades with no known triggered earthquakes because theres much less wastewater used to produce oil here. For example, in east hydraulic fracturing operations there might be 5 million gallons used. In california the average might be closer to 115, 120,000 gallons. We cant just depend on the word of Oil Companies. Reporter oil industry watchdog judy due began says there is no way to know if the Oil Companies are telling the truth because they are not required to provide documentation to back it up. Jurupa hills the area there is completely engulfed in flames. There are a number of firefighters on the ground right now trying to protect homes. High winds there too. This thing started with about 10 acres and really got cooking. Now its up to 50plus acres and they are still trying to get it under control and not having a whole lot of luck. You can see the crews there shooting from the streets there and paul, were you saying earlier that wind is not a big factor . It is contributing. Really interesting. In the city of riverside the wind is about 5 to 7 miles per hour. But you go up in elevation into the hills where we believe this fire is right now and the winds tonight and tomorrow are forecast to kick up to 30 to 50 miles per hour. The big ridge of High Pressure keeping up dry often begins Southern California wind. They better control this or else we may have a prolong problem come tomorrow. And talking about our weather around here, we are talking about High Pressure keeping us dry. The big ridge of High Pressure thats taken the storm track to the Pacific Northwest will give you offshore wind here and in Southern California. Its going to increase as the High Pressure dome makes a close pass. Thats why the fire danger is higher in Southern California. Its also why our temperatures tomorrow will be higher because of that offshore wind. Well tap into that, as well. So the northeast wind tomorrow will start march off on a very warm note. Most of us will be in the 70s tomorrow. Over the weekend we transition to onshore flow cooler and cloudier. By tuesday of next, week big changes. The first of three fronts will move through. These fronts will make it here. These fronts will give us rainfall. And we may have a prolonged cooler cloudier wetter period beginning tuesday of next week. Tomorrow enjoy the sunshine. Its going to be warm and sunny. Clouds increase over the weekend but nice to get outside well into the 60s next week. Thats when the bigger changes come.
