Bart is having to take parts from other cars in order to repair some damaged cars. Commuters are obviously frustrated. This delay in bart. Just rushing so im like i got to get there i got to get there reporter now, bart commuters will be boarding shorter trains so they will be more crowded with record ridership numbers. It will probably affect the case systemwide when bart is already seeing record ridership numbers. The only Silver Lining for passengers here at the North Concord bart station is that once you get on the train here, it is free to go anywhere you want on this system. Parking here at North Concord is also free this morning. It will probably fill up early. Well hear from a bart spokesman in a few minutes. Now, the announcement being made late today by the national Highway Traffic Safety Administration along with 20 different automakers, automatic emergency braking uses cameras and radar to see objects or people in the road and stop the vehicle if the driver does not react. The braking feature is already available as an option on many models. Now, studies show emergency braking could reduce rear end collisions by 40 . That comes out to 700,000 crashes prevented a year. Now, Safety Advocates were quick to point out the whole thing wreaks of a back room deal but the transportation secretary anthony foxx says these kinds of agreements actually speed up the adoption of new Technology Without having to go through the governments rulemaking process which can take years. Chp says a van was heading west on highway 4 during sunday nights storm when a pickup truck went into the vans lane and they hit head on. The van with a family of 6 inside went down the canal. Went down there and jumped in and didnt think. I pulled out the one guy and got him to the little side of the riverbank thing and then i went back and got the three kids. Reporter his wife and daughter tried to comfort the children ages 2, 9 and 10. It was like my mom was in the car, my dads in the car. So i went back down and tried to save them but i couldnt because they were pinned under the car. Reporter the parents died at the scene. The children were taken to tracy sutter hospital for minor injuries. Its hard. People every day have to, you know, be notified of their family dying. The train station has no service between North Concord and pittsburgbaypoint. Tenminute delays once you get on bart for the Pittsburg Baypoint line in the sfo direction. So plan for that. You might see some extra folks out there shorter trains. You will see extra crowded trains as well this morning. That means you might see extra crowded freeways also. In fact, look at this. Our drive time in the red now. 15 minutes as you work your way westbound highway 4. At least from hillcrest avenue to 242. Thats where the bulk of the delays are. So a few extra cars might be on the roads instead of folks using the roads instead of using bart this morning. So plan for that, sluggish there. No delays past the area towards the eastshore freeway. But once you got on the 80, that changes very quickly. Very slowandgo westbound 80. You have two separate accidents one at pinole valley road, another at hilltop. Extra busy there. Brake lights towards the bay bridge this morning, sluggish once you get here. Westbound 80 slow, 4 minutes carquinez bridge to the maze. Looks like westbound 580 starting to stack up as well as you work your way out of the maze over towards oakland heading into San Francisco. Westbound 580, from the Altamont Pass to 680, thats an 18minute ride through there. We have first reports of an accident westbound 580 right at hacienda. Two cars involved. No word if its blocking lanes. But you will see delays east of there as well as folks work their way out of tracy this morning. Westbound the super commuters seeing brake lights. They are lining up for shuttle buses in pittsburg after mechanical problems knocked dozens of train cars out of commission. Kpix 5s anne makovec is at the North Concord station. We are going to check in with her in just a minute. Well get back to anne shortly. But drivers on the peninsula also going to have a difficult ride because of options for commutes this morning. Caltrans just opened a new overpass to traffic at broadway and highway 101. Thats in burlingame. The old bridge over 101 will be demolished over the next couple of weeks. So traffic, um, could be an issue. We didnt get to anne, but, bart, they are busing i guess from pittsburgbaypoint to get around the North Concord station. So bart trains are going to be really packed this morning. Gianna, also the roads . Yes, definitely. So there is no Train Service between North Concord and pittsburgbaypoint stations for equipment problems. They are working on it. Its an ongoing problem since yesterday causing major delays now. Bus bridges are in place as a result to get you through that portion of bart. Now, there will be shorter trains once you get on bart this morning. So extra busy conditions again through there. That means you might see some delays on the roads. We are dealing with at least 10 to 15minute delays pittsburg bay point line towards sfo. Lets show you what this is doing to the freeway. Its busy for the morning drive. Its the commute direction but he will see busy conditions through there. 17 minutes now typical drive time between hillcrest avenue and 242 is only about 7 minutes. But again 17 minutes now so an extra 10 minutes for your drive just to get through this portion. Delays at the eastshore freeway. We have a couple of accidents westbound 80 at minute noel valley roadblocking lanes at pinole valley road blocking lanes. A second accident stuck at hilltop on the shoulder. Busy through there towards the bay bridge. Another wreck just reported south 101 at alameda del prado. We have anne makovec now. She is at the North Concord station with the latest on the detours. Reporter we just saw picks of some of the people board pictures of some of the people boarding buses at the Pittsburg Baypoint bart station. This is where those buses dropped people off at the North Concord bart station. I just talked to the spokesman who said anybody taking the bus bridge should add an extra 30 minutes to their trips. All bart riders should expect delays. Bart shut down the section of track between concord and pittsburgbaypoint yesterday after 50 train cars broke down there. Thats an updated number. 50 cars knocked out of service right now. Engineers are still trying to figure out whats causing the problem. They say power surges are basically frying a piece of the trains propulsion system. It is a real mystery though. And this happened last month in the transbay tube. They still havent solved that issue. That took 80 trains out of service. 80 train cars, rather, out of service. So bart is basically taking cars and car parts off other trains in the meantime causing more crowding systemwide. If you are getting on somewhere in downtown oakland you may have to wait for several trains before you fit. We have even yesterday had to take several trains out of service so not just train cars but normal trains that show up werent even there and that was as a result of what we were seeing yesterday. Reporter so this is what commuters are going to be dealing with, extra crowded trains for the foreseeable future. Theres no estimated time of when they reopen the track. They are taking test runs right now trying to figure out the problem. But as far as when things will be back to normal, no estimated time, no estimated price on how much this is going to cost bart and in the meantime, bart has been experiencing record ridership. So if you have issues with crowded trains on bart in the past, prepare for it in the future. The only bright spot in the concord station is rides are free as is parking. Police say this is the man who hit two kids in Castro Valley and then drove off. Daniel morris was arrested at a hotel in hayward early wednesday morning. Investigators say morris was driving a stolen car when he ran off the road last week hitting two brothers as they walked to school. The 8yearold boy had minor injuries. The 6yearold boy was severely hurt. At the familys request, police did not give details. Morris is charged with felony hitandrun, auto theft and possession of stolen property. The man accused of murdering morgan hill time sierra lamar will be in court today. Yesterday her friends and family held a gathering in fremont at a restaurant four years since her disappearance. The mother says its important her legacy is remembered. Not painful just to us but painful to everybody she has come into contact with showing us that shes affected a lot of people and shes missed and that makes me realize how blessed i was to have a daughter like her. Sierras body has never been found. But antolin garciatorres was arrested in the case after her dna was found in his car. He is charged with her kidnapping and murder. Well, in a few hours, a dog will be reunited with her owner after being lost at sea for nearly five weeks. The Navy Officials found luna on an island 80 miles off the coast of california after she disappeared while on her owners fishing boat. Here brian webb. Reporter one lucky dog. The 18monthold dog was welcomed home by her owners best friend after five weeks lost at sea and presumed dead. Never even thought in my wildest dreams this would be a possibility that i would ever see her again. Reporter luna was with her owner on a fishing boat elizabeth h on february 10th when she vanished about two miles off the coast of the san clemente island. The dog was reported missing to the navy and the coast guard began the search. We did not find her. I think that she was just down on the beach and that coloring blends perfectly. Reporter five weeks later the pup was spotted along the main road on the island. She is thin but not emaciated. When we got her she wasnt even that dehydrated. She was probably eating, you know, basically dead fish that she found on the shoreline. Reporter luna was flown to the coronado airbase hungry and healthy. I didnt think when i became the Commanding Officer that this would happen. Its a good story. Reporter her owner returns from a trip today. The tale of how she survived will remain a mystery forever. According to a news website, the selfdestructing message can be used to bypass public message laws. They are part of the Public Record if they relate to public business. Unfortunately news coming for employees of mckesson. The San Franciscobased wholesale drug distributor announcing its going to cut 1600 jobs, 4 of its u. S. Workforce. It needs to cut costs to meet new business strategies. Couple of weeks ago, mckesson went on a buying spree picking up three companies for 3 billion including canadas rexall pharmacy chain. Unemployment was up 7,000 to 265,000. The fourweek average flat. Overall levels suggesting solid job growth. That was something noted by the Federal Reserve and wrapped up in its twoday meeting and left Interest Rates unchanged. Williamssonoma reported earnings for the 4th quarter and the San Franciscobased company disappointed investors with its results. Its revenue is up less than 3 . And while its sales were higher at the flagship chain and west elm did well, pottery barn sales were down by 2 and pottery barn is the biggest revenue generator for Williams Sonoma.
