As the investigation songoing. Theyre trying to figure out exactly what happened, who may have been involved and what exactly is going on out here. As soon as we talk to police well come back live out here to you. Live in san jose, kpix 5. New at 6 00 a preview of the pitch oaklands mayor will make to the nfl. This wednesday will be her shot to convince owners the raiders should stay in oakland. Phil matier sat down with her. Reporter she says first she has to sell the owners, then she has to sell the voters of oakland. When we sat down with her, we asked how she planned to do it. Im prepared to answer tough questions, and obviously one of them is going to be what will the city do to help keep the team. And at what cost . Weve been clear that we wont directly subsidize stadium construction. Reporter what about free land . We have various options. Longterm lease is obviously a option. Reporter she will help with options like building up the bart station, especially now that the 49ers have moved to santa clara. What we have to sell right now san incredible market. Reporter but it will not come cheap. It could be in the range of 100 million. Not taking existing city money away, just using the future revenues generated by a new project. Reporter selling the nfl is one thing but the mayor also has to sell the public that still feels burned from the last raider deal, a deal that still cost city taxpayers 10 million a year. The existing debt is our responsibility. Thats a legal obligation. That is something that we just are accepting. Im a huge supporter of the raiders, but i dont believe we should spend any public money to keep them. Were talking about billionaires. I think they can fork up the money. Most oaklanders would like their teams to stay here. They like their sports teams. But not enough to spend public money to build stadiums. Thats the approach that weve taken, and thats the approach well continue to take. Reporter how vital is private investing in this . Private investing is absolutely vital. Phil, i am not going to speculate about what the nfl is going to do. I am just going to go make oaklands case to the nfl. Touchdown. Reporter and that case is going to be one that she will cut a deal with no public money actually going into building a new stadium. Shell put the money around here. The most interesting thing is she is going to be selling oakland as an easier Football Game to get to than those in San Francisco. The other big story of the day, rain, thunder, and lightning. This is some timelapse video from our roof cam of the storm clouds blowing through the bay area today. The umbrellas were out in San Francisco as people dodged raindrops on their way to work. The city got a pretty good soak earlier today but it was the lightning that created a number of close calls. One bolt nearly cost two women their lives. Kpix 5s Mike Sugerman on the storm two neighbors will never forget. Reporter well, kenny, its almost impossible to imagine, but that stump behind me was a centuries old 100foottall tree earlier this morning. But it became a rocket of shrapnel, and as you say, the consequences could have been much worse. Two houses, two women, both in the wrong place at the right time, and thats probably why theyre both alive. Explosion. The largest explosion ive ever, ever heard. I turn around and i see all the glass in the kitchen. Reporter karen baxter had been five seconds earlier standing at the spot where a rocket of a tree branch shot through her wall. Thats her normal routine. Reporter it just flew through the window . Yeah, it landed beautifully. It just go like a spaceship going through my bed radio. Reporter what flew through simones window and her neighbors door was part of this. What had been a 100yearold 100foottall redwood. Lightning hit. It exploded. So i grabbed my dorks i ran right in here. So i saw the tree explode all the way in the sky. Reporter it sent shrapnel in the bedroom she would have been in as part of her morning routine had not her dog had to go to the bath . Roo. The miracle thing is im alive, because if i could ben my room, im already dead. If im right here, im dead. I was right there. Five seconds. Reporter and if you were standing there when it happened oh, yeah, it would hit me, definitely. Thats why i was freaking. Reporter she has good reason to be. Five seconds off her normal routine, and shes okay. A dogs Early Morning routine, and shes okay. No one died here today, and thats the story theyll be telling for a long time to come. The cleanup will continue for days. The garden that you saw in that story, simones garden, exquisite. It was planted last week. Its going to be months before that gets back to where it was. In san ma dayo Mike Sugerman, kpix 5. A bolt of lightning hit another tree in San Francisco. This one split a eucalyptus nearly in half in the provide presidio. Our chief meteorologist paul with more on the lightning component of this storm. 600 lightning strikes. If you strip away the radar from kpix hidef doppler we can track the storm. Hundreds of lightning strikes in a not normally hit by lightning area which is San Francisco. We average two lightning days per year. Weve had two in the past week. We have a few isolated showers. No more lightning but a few isolated showers, one leaving hayward and fremont, one heading toward the valley, redwood city, and palo alto, the and a few sprinkles by san jose. In the Central Valley theres actually a Tornado Warning for this storm south and east of sacramento. We could see live oak impacted. A Tornado Warning east of sacramento. Farther to the east we have numerous reports of heavy snowfall, from tahoe all the way down to 3500 feet. A winter storm warning in effect through the night tonight. Snow level as low as 3500 feet. Frost is coming here. Thats coming up next. All right, paul, thank you. And the storm also bringing snow to the sierra. Were look at back to back mondays with fresh pow dhemplet is video from sierra at tahoe where it looks like a heavy dusting of snow has blanketed the mountains. Ian schwartz is live at donner lake, where it looks like its snowing now. Ian. Reporter what a beautiful shot. It has been a long time coming. You can see the flakes flying. You cant see the lake because were at sunset. I want to show you Something Real quick. This is a satellite view a year ago. Not a lot of snow, just some down by yosemite. Corey says this is how she likes her winters. Wet, cloudy, and full of snow. Like we used to have. We havent seen it in a long time. Reporter so far this season the sky has delivered for corey and anyone else who loves snow. Puffy flakes drifted down to the grounding a gain as a second winter storm strikes california in less than a weak. Even though her dogs are intent on, how do you say, changing the hue of the snow, corey says they cant get enough of it. Oh, they love it. Reporter theres someone who loves the snow even more. Were plugging along. Reporter Lincoln Kauffman runs the snow ranch. No snow guns here. He says last year was tough at a time with such little snow in the sierra. The year before, we didnt get christmas. We werent able to open until january 17th, and that was extremely grim. Reporter but with back to back snow storms, snowmen like lincoln are becoming more and more optimistic. If these patterns keep up, it could be just a fantastic season. The utility says they need to go. But new at 6 00, maria medina tells us the city has taken in the usual step of homeowners not to cooperate with the utility. Reporter city leaders felt that pg e went behind their back so they say they felt they had no choice but to send out this letter to homeowners urging them not to work with pg e. At this point do you trust pg es word . No comment on that. I think its obvious, my opinion. Reporter mike says he has a few words planned out for pg e crews in their next meeting. Boy, youve made my work a lot harder. Reporter he says last month he learned pg e wanted to remove 700 trees on private and public property that could get in the way of First Responders in case of emergency. We of course questioned whether they really needed to remove the number of trees. Reporter mike says wanted his community to weigh in and got pg e to agree to take a closer look at every tree and get back to them. Instead they did not do that. We are only replacing trees that pose a safety concern. Reporter Cindy Campbell is among the many who wrote a letter and then got a visit from pg e crews. Pg e says the roots are growing around the pipes, scraping off the sides. Reporter so in response, city leaders sent out a letter to homeowners asking them not to agree to any contract with pg e just yet. Im not sure whether it is really needed to remove those trees. Reporter tree advocate katherine also questions pg e. She says theres just no evidence a tree has ever ruptured a pipeline in california. If they were to remove that large a number of trees, it would have an impact on the community. Of course we understand the need for pipeline safety. Reporter city leaders say safety is a priority, but they want pg e to show them proof and keep its word. At this point they have yet to show us any documentation that justifies any particular danger of trees to gas pipelines. Reporter well, pg e says city leaders had it all wrong, it was a miscommunication. They were reaching out to homeowners to assess those trees. They say they want to remove 350 trees, not 700, and for every tree they remove they will replace it. They did meet with city leaders today and agreed on a Public Meeting for early december. Maria medina, kpix 5. A bay area congresswoman is trying to bring back peace and quiet in some neighborhoods. The problem, noisy planes headed to bay area airports. Heres the change that has made the problem worse. Its really distracting. Its even gotten worse. Its just like repeated stab wounds. Reporter frustrated with the near constant buzz and rumble of airplane engines, amy and lee have been trying to raise their voices loud enough to be heard and taken seriously bey the faa. I really cant bear to live this way. Something has to change. Reporter the crystals and thousands of their neighbors have filed noise complaints with San Francisco International Airport. For many the problem began two years ago with the faa ruled out its Nextgen Program, new technology which allows pilots to fly planes with greater precision and narrow the flight path in and out of major airports. The Nextgen Program has certainly had an effect, and i would say a negative one. Reporter congresswoman anna eshoo says the flight path has created a super highway in the sky funneling hundreds of planes over the same communities day in, day out. Shes proposed two bills to address concerns but in the meantime the faa is coming one a plan of its own, a plan the crystals heap will restore at least a little peace and quiet to their neighborhood. What wed like to see is a more equitable distribution, something fair. We think everybody benefits from air travel in the bay area, and everybody should bear some of the burden. Reporter in palo alto, devin fehely, kpix 5. Taxi drivers have a dispute override sharing. This video shows cabbies circling the airport, blairing their horns but not picking up any passengers. The cab drivers are angry the city requires them to undergo background checks and be fingerprinted but only a small percentage of the uber and lyft drivers would have to do the same thing. Theyre leaving, ironically, their current customers standing at the curb soaked in the rain today. We are not against ride share companies. We welcome them at the airport. Let them follow the rules we follow, thats all. The city launched a Pilot Program that would have treated cabbies and ride share drivers the same but no ride share drivers agreed to service the airport under those regulations. So the modified ride sharing plan comes up before the city council tomorrow. Police in walnut creek are investigating whether the driver in a deadly crash ran a red light. The accident happened at about 7 50 this morning. Thats where a 56yearold woman was struck while in the crosswalk. Police say it does not appear that alcohol or drugs played a factor. Back to the storm that brought rain, thunder, and lightning to the bay area. This is video posted on facebook from palo alto open space where there were a number of lightning flashes this morning as well as some heavy rain. And check this out. A bay area photographer just happened to catch the moment a lightning bolt hit the south tower of the golden gate bridge.
