Slow traffic because of blocked lanes on interstate 238. This is traffic backing up on 580. The bart commute was a mess today. High winds stopped service in several areas. Hayward fire just tweeted this photo of a large tree right on the bart tracks sitting right there in south hayward. Elsewhere bart says a 30foot log fell on to the tracks between the glen park and balboa park stations in San Francisco. Service just started up again between 24th and mission in daly city. And for part of the afternoon at least trains were not running between concord and Pleasant Hill because of wind blown debris on the tracks. And incredible pictures of damage coming into the newsroom tonight. This giant redwood tree came crashing down on to a home in north napa. And this photo from san jose, this tree toppled on to the moss creek mobile home community. The tree by the parking lot fell on to a building. No reports of any injuries. Kpix 5s Ann Notarangelo joins us live from the berkeley hills. Now, she has been tracking wind damage all over the bay area. Ann. Reporter yeah. And elizabeth, we came up to skyline boulevard because we had an idea we would probably feel the full effect of the wind and we certainly have been disappointed. We are up here with mobile weather which is telling us that it feels like its 38 degrees because of the wind even though its about 44 degrees. And the wind gusts are keeping up to about 20 miles an hour. Thats our one hour peak. Every once in a while we get a big burst of wind and it feels like its freezing. But you dont have to come up to a Higher Elevation to feel the effects of this winds. Everybody heard the crack. If you look at the car, you can see that the limb that really broke landed right on top of my roof. And that crack we heard. Reporter not too far from the airport, roy carlisles car and suv are trapped by this tree. It was a shock to discover until roy noticed the trees shallow roots and the fact that its on a hill. The wind didnt help. But he jokes, its partly the cars fault. Its cursed. This car has been banged into, engine blown up, its ready to go. May she rest in peace. Reporter not too far away this building was losing its shingles with just about every powerful gust of wind. Drivers are being warned to be careful on bay area bridges. It was already a bit of a White Knuckle drive this morning. My car was definitely whipping all over the road. You know, i drive a small car so im sure with the larger vehicle it would be a lot more difficult. Reporter it wasnt so great on the water either. The blue and gold fleet canceled its day cruises because of the wind and waves. And the wind advisory is in effect until midafternoon tomorrow. In berkeley, Ann Notarangelo, kpix 5. [ chainsaw ] in concord, a massive tree came crashing down on concord avenue and diamond boulevard. Authorities say a corvette was driving by at that exact moment and got banged up by some of the branches. It had minor damage and was able to drive away. Crews cut up that tree trying to clean up the mess. So take a look at just how hard the wind was blowing in Pleasant Hill today. The trees were swaying, leaving blowing across the road. Meteorologist Brian Hackney on the onetwo punch of wind and cold. Brian. Thats right. First we get the wind, then its really going to be cold tomorrow night in time for new years eve. That will probably be the coldest night of the week. But first things first, we have powerful wind gusts tonight and real whitecaps out there in the bay. Peak wind gusts about 43 miles an hour at livermore, 52 at napa, at the airport. The Oakland Hills at 62milean hour gusts. San jose so far 37. I say so far because were not done yet. This wind field is working its way into the south bay and the cities tonight we could expect gusts up to 45 Miles Per Hour same along the coast, and in the hills we would get 60plus mileanhour gusts. Thats why the wind advisory is posed until midday tomorrow posted until midday tomorrow. Wind speeds are now about 25 to 35 miles an hour. Brighter color, stronger winds. You can see right along the coastline. I just went down to get coffee. Its blowing a hurricane on battery street its really blowing in the city. It will continue to be windy tonight. In terms of what we can expect in terms of the winds overnight, we have a futurecast to show you on that when we cover the weather a few minutes from now. Liz. Brian, thank you. It is a choppy ride for ferry commuters. Right now the blue and gold fleet has stopped ferries from traveling to oyster point and South San Francisco because of that wind. At sfo, 70 flights have been canceled because of the wind. And delays are up to an hour and a half. Pg e crews are working on power lines in mill valley this morning. The strong winds knocked out power to tens of thousands of customers throughout the bay. The south bay hit the hardest right now with more than 24,000 people in the dark. The east bay has 15,000 without power. Well, the first Sierra Snowpack survey of the winter reveals good news. Todays measurements near echo summit revealed more snow than at this time last year. But still just a third of average. And not nearly enough to impact the drought. California snowpack supplies about a third of the states water as it melts in the spring. A highend heist at one of the bay areas ritziest restaurants. Thieves had no reservations about breaking into the famed French Laundry in yountville. Domain [ nonenglish language ] is a winery in burgundy. It is generally considered among the rarest and most collectible wines on planet earth. Reporter it looks like the thieves may have known exactly what to grab. Its very much like an art heist. These are very specifically close end. If you were to break into a museum, you would have to know what you were after. They are very specifically chosen. Reporter someone kicked open the door to the restaurant on christmas day. There was a small window of opportunity over the Christmas Holidays where there wasnt anybody here and, um, whoever is responsible for this took advantage of that. These are the two men police say stole a Newspaper Delivery truck and took off on a wild chase from San Francisco to san leandro. Andrew rojas and Rudy Martinez both live in San Francisco. Police say rojas was driving the stolen truck in the bayview yesterday when officers tried to stop them. The chase went down the peninsula at one point the truck ramming a police car. The suspects crossed the san mateo bridge and were recently arrested in san leandro. They face a list of charges including 7 counts of assault against officers. Search crews recovered personal items including a blue suitcase from the shallow waters of the java sea. About 10 miles from the jets last known location. In the south bay neighbors are keeping a close eye on their cars after three suspicious fires overnight. They all happened on bascomb avenue near the san Jose Campbell border. Its the same area as three similar fires last week. The first broke out at 10 p. M. Last night. Flames engulfed a van tuck away behind an office complex. Two hours later, cell phone video captured a volkswagen on fire. Less than a mile away near the ebay campus. Then at around 2 30 a. M. , someone torched a toyota outside the riverwalk apartments. They also smashed the window of a nearby car. The toyotas owner didnt want to show her face but told us she relies on her car to get to work. Just cant believe that someone would do this to people. It sounds like its just for fun. Theres no gain. There was no need for my car or anything it just it makes me sad that there are people out there that would do this. The flames came so close to the apartment building, it melted the plastic window shutters. Investigators arent saying yet if the six fires are related. On Mount Hamilton they are up to 50 miles an hour and they will probably top that because the winds this wind field is reaching down into the south bay and kicking the numbers up. The interesting thing about all of this, these winds its not like the cold front blew through. We had a sudden spike in winds and then they went away. These are sustained. So there could be more problems tonight because they are not going away anytime soon. Well have gusty winds through the evening as you are about to see. If you are heading outnumbers will be 40s clear breezy. Futurecast, the deep purple colors are showing you the strongest and this is frozen at midnight so you can see 37 mileanhour winds in san rafael and the city, half moon bay, 41 miles an hour. Well roll this toward dawn and now the brighter colors come in suggesting the winds are beginning to abate, 8 00, still 30mileanhour winds pretty good winds but as we get toward midday everything brightens meaning the winds begin to relax until finally, 24 hours from now, look at livermore winds go calm. It will take a while to get there. Still windy tonight through the overnight hours. Out the door tomorrow morning, well see clear skies. But breezy. Temperatures will start out only in the upper 30s inland. And well be in the low 40s around the bay. And high pressure, that low that was up in the Pacific Northwest yesterday, now approaching the desert southwest, so it will be windy and cold through midday tomorrow. And then things will warm up toward the weekend. We are going to have to wait for it. Strong winds through 11 p. M. Tonight, moderately windy tomorrow morning, abating midday tomorrow, new years eve chilly and cold.
