Com and enter your zip code to get the lowdown on the low temperatures barts largest unions filed a lawsuit today asking a judge to force the Transit Agency to sign off on new contracts including that disputed family leave provision. Ann notarangelo is in Pleasant Hill with the latest twist in the bart labor saga. Ann. Reporter allen, this is just a portion of the paperwork that was filed today in superior court. It accuses bart of breaking the law three times. First, they say, for refusing to ratify the contract. Then for refusing to execute the complete contract. And finally, for what they say is sidestepping months of negotiations. The unions say this is at the heart of bargaining in good faith. So we think theres a statutory obligation to sign the agreement, live up to it, put it into effect. Delays things by several months if not longer. A lawsuit isnt needed to fix a mistake. A mistake was made. Bart will not be able to show they have good cause to back away from this total agreement. They are claiming it was a mistake on their part. That cannot be. If it were a mistake, it would be a mistake committed by a number of their agents over a number of months. It just doesnt make sense. Reporter the unions signed off on their contracts last month, and they expected the barred board to essentially the bart board to essentially rubber stamp it. Instead bart said a temporary worker accidentally typed in a provision for family live which they say would cost the agency 5 million to 10 million. The bart board approved the contracts minus the provisions. No one knows when the judges ruling might come down or whether or not they will be able to settle it out of court. What everybody wants to know is will there be another bart strike . At this point the unions say they have not even discussed that. But they are leaving that open as an option. In Pleasant Hill, ann notarangelo, kpix 5. We now know what caused a fire under a bart train in orinda back in october. Bart says that a piece of equipment under the car overheated and sparked the flames. Two parts intended to cool the equipment were missing. Nobody was hurt. The fire caused major delays force, the closure of the orinda bart station for several hours. Palo alto is looking to save the city money but it may cost some workers their jobs. As our len ramirez reports, street sweepers are getting the word their jobs may be outsourced, right at their busiest time of year. Reporter street sweepers in palo alto are like turkeys and football players. It wouldnt be fall without them. These people have been here years and years. They have experience. They know their jobs. They take pride in their jobs. Reporter and in a leafy city like palo alto, it is a big job. Take a look at the size of those piles of leaves swept up from the streets and gutters of just a few city blocks. A crew of seven city workers has been doing this job for decades, but that may be about to change. The city is considering outsourcing street sweeping to private contractors to save money. Seven employees will lose their positions in the city and they will hire contractors to do the functions that the employees currently do. We are sensitive to the fact that these are employees, its their positions, and so what were trying to do is our Due Diligence in terms of whether this would be a cost savings if in fact we did go out and outsource this service. Reporter besides outsourcing, the city proposes cutting back the street sweeping schedule from once a week to once every other week during most of the year. Palo alto estimates that outsourcing could save the city more than 400,000 a year. But whats the cost of losing jobs . Thats what resident ann badilla wants to . I think local jobs should stay in the city of palo alto. Its a significant employer. And im all pro keep jobs local. But it could slow down future rate hikes. A handful of protestors on hand for the opening today of a planned parenthood facility in redwood city. Hundreds of people in the surrounding neighborhood signed a petition claiming that it will decrease their Property Values and hurt nearby businesses. Planned parenthood insists that there is a need in the area. The push to build a park honoring the teenager killed by a Sonoma County deputy is gaining traction. Andy lopez was shot to death in october while carrying an air rifle designed to look like an assault rifle. County supervisors discussed that proposed memorial today but no final decision yet. The search was suspended at dark. It will pick up again at daylight tomorrow. In merced a father and two children died in a massive duplex fire this morning. The familys home went up in flames at around 12 30. The father, mother and 1year old baby initially climbed out of a window to escape. But then the 31yearold father climbed back in to rescue his two other children a girl and a boy, both 5 years old. They never made it back out. The 28yearold mother and baby were taken to the hospital and are expected to be okay. A popular tv host is dead after he was hit by a car while riding his motorcycle in San Francisco. Police say 38yearold Bill Beckwith died at San Francisco general after the crash at oak and styner last night. The car driver is apparently cooperating with investigators. For instance, my fico score is actually 14 points lower than my fakeout score and in some cases the scores are off by as much as 100 points a difference that could cost thousands on a car loan, hundreds of thousands on a mortgage. Frankly, this is information that comes from you and me and all consumers, and there are private companies that make a lot of money off our data. Reporter now fico is trying to get lenders to give you your score for free. So far barclays, First National of omaha and discover have signed on and fico expects more next year. The 28yearold woman was apparently for whatever reason jumping between rooftops and she fell into an 18 space between the buildings. Firefighters had to get down in there, put a harness around the woman. Then they lifted her up. Rescue took an hour and a half. The woman is okay. Treated for some minor injuries.
