M. For cleaning and road closures in the city howard closed for oracle world convention. Today selfdriving cars have a whole new set of rules to play by. Federal regulators are releasing guidelines before the rides hit the roads in big numbers. Jackie ward is live in our newsroom with more on the new rules. Reporter safety is one of the main concerns with self driving cars and federal regulators are saying they believe these vehicles will actually save drivers lives. Before these cars are even allowed on the road the department of transportation is unveiling a federal policy that includes a 15point assessment including everything from the vehicles design and testing to distribution. But after a fatal crash involving a tesla in autopilot mode plus several google self driving cars crashing some people are scared. I want people die every year in car accidents. 94 are human error. Do we think selfdriving technology can make a dent in that statistics . Reporter automakers would have to sign and submit assessments to ensure their vehicles are safe. City leaders are considering a new project across from santana row just off winchester boulevard at the site of the old Century Theater domes and a 50yearold diner. Plans call for the century 21 dome to become a storm facility but the city council is asking for new ideas like stripping away the outside to create a steel framed open air entertainment plaza within the new development. This project is very significant. We are talking about building almost a million square feet of commercial space. What were doing now is going to impact generations to come. Starting today, sheriffs deputies in marin county will have to wear body cameras. The county is issuing 85 cameras. In june, the board of supervisors signed off on a fiveyear agreement with taser international. The arrangement involves body cameras and cloudbased data storage and it isnt cheap.
