Reporter the bay areas first pay as you go jail is 155 a night. The cost of a 3 star hotel. You get cable tv but not a warm cookie on your bed. Reporter this is a standard jail withstandard issued mattresses. Not bad. Not great either. Reporter shared showers with minimal privacy. At least its warm. Not very warm, though. Reporter game tables and cable tv on a wide screen with a remote, yes, in hd. Do not expect room service, fresh linens or a mint on your pillow. The only other thing that youre paying for is the smallness and the quietness of the facility. Reporter a 10 Million Building was meant to hows minimal security inmates to do landscaping, laundry and other work around the property. That never happened, leaving fremont with a brandnew unused jail. We are the trustees of a large facility that was paid for by taxpayer money. We need to be good stewards of that investment and maximize its use and its efficiency for the taxpayers. Reporter the city says pay as you go jail isnt about elitism, its about return on investment. The jail upgrade is only open to misdemeanor offenders who get a judges okay. Were learning more about a woman known to everyone in the neighborhood who was shot and killed while driving on fern street in the fairfax district. Neighbors told Christin Ayers what happened. Were all stunned and shocked and saddened. Reporter friends walked into 66yearold judy salamons home a few hours after she was shot in her car, less than a mile where she has lived for more than 20 years. The police came by and said that our nextdoor neighbor was shot in the head. Reporter her neighbors say she was an animal lover, pet sitter that took care of multiple dogs. Her family was her dogs and cat snooze they believe she was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time and got caught in the crossfire here on fern avenue. Just a little old lady right there.
