Thats scary. New video shows the smoking plane seconds after impact. People were saying run run run and you know, we just ran. Pilots around the world are asking, did the cultural dynamic have anything to do with the crash. I am alan martin right now what is left of asiana flight 214 still sits off runway 28 left. The plane was flying too low and too slow according to the ntsb. Investigators interviewed the flight crew today. First responders walk us through the rescue and what they never expected to see inside the plane. Families of the two teenage girls who died are due to land at sfo in just a few minutes. Earlier the president and ceo apologized to those families in person as they made a brief stop over in south korea. Our team coverage, starts with joe vazquez, with new information about the final moments to have flight. Reporter witnesses for the last couple days told us, the plane was going too low and too slow before it crashed here at sfo. Federal investigators are now filling in some of the details. As asiana flight 214 was on approach 17 miles from sfo the engines were working and no indications of any problems. Until the final seconds when the crew began to realize the plane was dramatically slowing down going 40 Miles Per Hour slower than they should have been landing a 777. At 7 seconds before impact a member of the flight crew called for the pilot to speed up, 4 seconds before impact, the controls started to shake the pilot tried to change his mind 1. 5 seconds before the crash abort the landing and lift the plane but it was too late. In the air. Oh, my god. It is an accident. Reporter the tail hit the ground first well short of the runway. The lower portion of the tail cone is in the rocks at the sea wall. There is also debris from the sea wall, located several hundred feet up the runway. Reporter take a close look at this amateur video shot by a teen staying at a hotel seconds after the crash. You can see emergency slides begin to inflate and passengers scramble off the burning plane. There were problems during the evacuation two emergency slides inflated inside the plane trapping passengers. First responders had to hand Flight Attendants an axe to deflate them and set everyone free. The two 16yearold girls who died were seated in the the rear of the plane and thrown outside. Officials say they are investigating the possibility of Fire Department vehicle, ran one of the girls over. It is not clear whether she was alive when that happened. Tonight San Francisco police are examining the fire truck wheels, that were out here on saturday, according to the San Francisco chronicle. Looking over those trucks alan, to find out what happened, what caused that accident and then the coroner said it could take weeks before we know whether that was the cause of death. Joe vazquez thank you. Half a world away in china, classmates of the victims held a candlelight vigil. Classmates say they loved music and one wanted to be a journalist. The girls families are to arrive in sfo in just a few minutes their plane will touchdown right next to the wreckage. Reporter yes, we are live at the Crown Plaza Hotel in burlingame where there is a heavy Police Presence checking out the cars coming and going media not allowed inside. This is under federal jurisdiction because of all the Crash Victims staying here as well. As you mention we are expecting family members to arrive in just a little bit. We have footage of the family members departing from shanghai. 18 of them. We are being told they are arriving at sfo at 11 10 p. M. Tonight. In the meantime we are getting new details about the rescue that happened saturday. We are hearing stories from first responders, stories of heroism and bravery. Passengers who escaped snapped these photos of the Flight Attendants the women kept returning to the wreckage to rescue survivors. One was giving a child a piggy back ride. Later she was running around and helping out crew and also working with the fire men she was crying she was in fear but she did a great job. Reporter the Flight Attendant said overhead bins collapsed and luggage blocked the exit rows. The ceiling was coming down and it felt like something was dragging the plane. Behind me i couldnt see because there was a wall. First responders said fuel was gushing out the wing like a fire hose and victims were moaning in pain. Firefighters only had one way on. Our only way up was the chute that is what we did. I said if he can do it i can do it. Reporter she made her way down the aisle, knocking down flames with a hose and spotted elderly passengers and kids trapped between the seats. By the time we removed the final victim, the conditions were the fire was banking down on us we had heavy black smoke i feel very lucky and blessed that we were able to get those people out in that time. Reporter Police Officer Jim Cunningham tossed his knife up to Flight Attendants to cut through seat belts and free passengers. He tried not to drop passengers, while coughing. I couldnt let those people be in there by themselves they were moaning inside the plane they just had a helpless look on their face i wouldnt going to leave them inside. Reporter he was asked if he was a hero police chief answered. Are you a hero. I was just doing my job. He is a hero [ laughter ] reporter and one of the Police Officers took it upon himself to remind fellow officers and firefighters they are human and to get counselling. We have more information about the men in the cockpit. Pilot and copilot had more than 22,000 flight hours between them but the man at the controls had just 43 hours in a triple 7 and he was making his first landing at sfo in a 777. Tonight sharon chin says many in the Aviation Industry are asking what role culture played in that cockpit. Reporter the pilots experience is only a small piece of the puzzle. They will look to see if distraction was a factor. Crew responsibilities in terms of leadership and resource management. Reporter equally as important if not more is dynamics of those four men in the cockpit. American airlines captain. It is extremely important. You cant have the cockpit where you have first officer, second officer, captain flying along in their own little world. Reporter quick decisions are critical the faa requires american pilots to train in Resource Training in the cockpit. There is also a no fault go around policy anyone in the cockpit, can call to abort the landing and try again. When another pilot on the flight deck in the crew says go around, in getting they are uncomfortable with the approach it is mandatory for us to conduct the go around. Reporter we dont know if asiana pair lines uses a no fault go around policy. Planes are flown safely when the pilot and copilot are in open end honest communication in cultures where it is difficult for a junior person to speak openly to a superior you have lots of plane crashes. Reporter south korea has been trying to change its culture for years most pilots came from the airforce and out of respect copilots could not challenge captains even when they were wrong. The day only half the pilots are from the military. You cant have a situation where the captain, you know, does everything on the airplane and no one questions him. It can be a life or death dynamic.
