Town hall meeting last night including Fred Gutenburg who's 14 year old daughter was one of the 17 people shot and killed at a Parkland high school Senator Rubio my daughter running down the hallway a martyr still in doubt was her shot in the back yes with an assault weapon the weapon of choice Yes Ok it is too easy to get it is a weapon of war the fact that you can stand with everybody in this building and say that I'm sorry Rubio told the crowd he is rethinking his opposition to limits on high capacity magazines I traditionally have not supported looking at magazine clips size and after this and some of the details I've learned about it I'm reconsidering that position and I'll tell you why. I'll tell you why because while it may not prevent an attack it may save lives in an attack he also endorsed raising the age requirement to buy a rifle then you'll gathering of conservative activists known as c Pac begins a 3 day conference outside Washington d.c. And I'm David Greene in Culver City California last night Fred Guttenberg whose daughter Jamie was killed at a Florida high school on Valentine's Day was at a town hall he confronted his senator Republican Marco Rubio who was talking about gun policy I'm saying of the problems that we're facing here today cannot be solved by gun laws along. And I want to tell you what we've done already what I hope we're doing moving our lines the factor obviously wanting of our What If it were. That exchange came during a c.n.n. Town hall many survivors of the massacre in Parkland Florida and their families spent yesterday talking with political leaders students also met with lawmakers in Florida's capital some sat down with President Trump at the White House Parklane Florida's mayor Christine hunch off Skee was at that meeting with the president and joins me now Mayor Welcome good morning I just have been struggling to listen to some of these parents all morning and what they were saying yesterday the parents students that it sounds like there's still so much pain in your community can can you just tell us how people are doing in Portland Yes the whole community is grieving we lost 17 lives on the Marjorie Stillman Douglas community and for the last week we've been going to morals to funerals and we live in such a wonderful close knit community and Parklane very family oriented most people have been somehow affected or knew someone so it really hits home for our residents and makes it very tough So we're definitely going through a grieving process and it's going to be a long process the good news is if there is a good news in this because we have such a tight knit bonded community. We'll get we'll get through this together I know at the White House yesterday one of your many difficult jobs was to read statements from 2 fathers who lost their kids in the shooting what can you tell us about the message you think they had for the president what did they want President Trump to know. Antone Montell toe and Jen Montell So the 1st ones I read about in their comments they just want solutions they just want something to be done. There mention was. They support the 2nd Amendment but that they didn't feel there was a need for assault weapons as part of that and for Guttenberg it you heard him so eloquently last night speak on his own. He wanted it acknowledge that guns are part of the debate. I want to just play a clip from the end of that White House meeting if if we could listen together if you have a feeling as. Many If you. All ears. Yes you are some are good so so listening to the President Trump I mean did did you leave that meeting feeling like the president has a plan. I feel left that meeting feeling like the president wants to take action and there seems to be a resolve of vice president Pence was also there he seemed resolved. I think we're just really now at a point where people of all parties and all areas of the country just want to see some action and some solutions so many times people get so caught up in their own ideals and beliefs and we forget about what we really need to focus on and that's to make sure that something like this never happens. On the listening listening session was nice and productive in the sense that there were many different opinions there there were many different viewpoints and they were all presented in a respectful way with the goal of coming up with a solution. I What might the solution look like or do you see a solution coming together I mean I know after this meeting you mentioned the positive impact of banning assault style weapons President Trump talked about maybe arming teachers he also talked about being open to to different age restrictions maybe raise raising the minimum wage to purchase different kinds of weapons you as you listen to all of these ideas do you feel there might be a coming together of the mind somewhere I think there will be a coming together of minds somewhere there and listen there are so many things that could be done to take steps toward preventing this from happening again so there are so many little things that can be done and what I've noticed so in our own Florida. Capital we have Senator Bill galvanic know who's already proposing changes that one would never have thought would have been possible a year ago on things like raising the legal age of possession of an assault rifle. Red Flag legislation which there seems to be a lot of consensus around and the red flag legislation is when someone shows signs of wanting to harm themselves or others you can get a restraining order on their gun. The fact that people seem to be willing to talk about these kinds of solutions is very promising Well mayor will be thinking about your community in the days and weeks ahead thank you so much for your time thank you that is the mayor of Parklane Florida mayor Christine hunch off ski. While the debate over immigration rages here in the us there's a similar debate happening in Israel tens of thousands of East African migrants have gone to Israel in the past decade and now Israel is handing out deportation notices and threatening jail N.P.R.'s Daniel Estrin begins this report outside an immigration office near Tel Aviv. So we're here in a parking lot people from Eritrea and Sudan showed up very early in the morning couple guys in line said they got here by 4 in the morning and one by one some people are coming out with papers they got from the immigration authorities saying they can take $3500.00 and leave to a different country or else they'll be sent to jail in Ohio Levi have a Latino woman this is a maritime sui and you know from Eritrea He's 28 years he says he came here fleeing an oppressive mandatory military service in Eritrea Israel doesn't consider that a reason for asylum but Israel acknowledges it's dangerous to send Eritreans and Sudanese back home so Israel has made deals with 2 African countries apparently Rwanda and Uganda to take in migrants so young was given a document saying he'd be sent somewhere safe he has until the beginning of April to decide whether to take the plane ticket and the money or face jail actually them check it in a political as a political name a hockey doesn't believe he'll be treated well and Rwanda or Uganda that he'd rather go to jail if he's losing sleep over it and so was someone else like me here outside the immigration office the money shoot me here under age under a new law an article that says Israeli volunteer a not Reisman legging What are you doing here today doing whatever I can do in order to sleep well at night the big picture is to prevent the potations she came to help migrants fill out their asylum requests properly she says she's reminded of her parents Holocaust survivors but it's not on she. Yes but the issue of being a refugee and being in danger. And asking for refuge in others countries do not accept it we've been there the new policy has prompted a fierce public debate in Israel does the country have a historical or moral obligation to shelter African migrants to make up a lot of your own thoughts that you don't want to hear that see as not us about these conservative talk show hosts are arguing with a liberal lawmaker on the radio they say it's insulting to compare this to the Holocaust they say the migrants are a burden on society they're not the only ones with the long view above I'm a homophobe this cab driver Yossi Cohen tells me the problem is that the African migrants are not Jewish He says the fear is that tomorrow the next day they'll become citizens and take over the country. I'm. Sure Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is defending the deportation plan he points out Israel is not deporting women and families and letting others stay while their asylum requests are pending but opposition is growing groups of physicians and filmmakers have taken up the cause and some flight attendants and pilots are calling on airlines not to fly people to Africa and there is some concern among Jews in the u.s. An American Jewish community leader Malcolm home line said on a visit to Israel that he and heads of several Jewish organizations are studying the issue we have this debate raging in the United States right now and there's no way that you can make it look nice when people are leaving the country but at the same time we recognize that every country has to set standards just this week Israel jailed the 1st few Eritreans who refused deportation But prison officials say they might not even have the space to jail everyone who won't leave pressure is building on the government to come up with another. News I'm David Greene in Culver City California and I'm Rachel Martin in Washington d.c. It was a remarkable day survivors of gun violence speaking directly to those in power about their loss and how it could have been prevented from Florida to Washington in 3 different settings they shared their grief and demanded answers there was a meeting between Parklane students and Florida State lawmakers then there was the c.n.n. Town hall event in Florida where a grieving mother confronted a spokeswoman for the n.r.a. Here's Linda Biegel Schuman whose son Scott was a teacher at the school why are my son's an alley in of all rights not protected as fiercely as the right to bear arms. And there was this listening session at the White House this is Sam is a student at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School here he is addressing President Trump Welcome to the news that my best friend was gone. And I don't understand why I could still go in a store and buy a weapon of war President Trump said this to the group you start thinking about this. Situation the thing. To get. So how will he and other leaders figure it out we're joined now by N.P.R.'s national political correspondent Mara Liasson Mara I just want to start there in the White House in that room you were there or what was it like it was very raw like all of these confrontations have been you had parents not just from Parkland students from Parkland you also had parents who had lost children in Sandy Hook and Columbine and it was a very intense emotional meeting the president trying to show empathy something he struggled with in the past Later when we saw the close up shots from that meeting he was holding in a little card with instructions on it that included one that said to remind the crowd I hear you but there was it was a respectful somber conversation about ideas to make sure these kinds of horrific attacks don't happen again did it get specific and did the president give any concrete steps about what he was going to do yes it certainly did there was a consensus in the room that there should be better background checks more mental health restrictions although not a lot of specifics about exactly what that would be but the biggest takeaway from the president is he wants more firearms in schools he wants to arm teachers school employees like histo de ins that got a mixed reception at the White House meeting and he also said that he was going to go very strong to push age restrictions on purchasing assault rifles to make it $21.00 instead of 18 this is something that the n.r.a. Opposes the president doesn't usually break with such an important part of his political base so we'll see if he maintains that position so speaking of the n.r.a. There spokeswoman Dana lash was one of the guests at the c.n.n. Town hall that happened last night in Florida not that far away from Parkland among the other guests Senator Marco Rubio faced a lot of really tough questions from family members. Vive years of the Parklane shooting I mean this got very intense we've got some sound of how the crowd was responding to Marco Rubio when he was trying to explain his positions on gun control but I want to explain to you why. Senator Rubio I mean this was extraordinary mark to see lawmakers in this kind of position yes and I should say Senator Rubio got a lot of credit for just showing up there was a lot of comments that he had leased came Governor Scott who is widely expected to be running for Senate this year did not come to that meeting but Rubio was booed he was called pathetically weak when he said he wouldn't refuse to take n.r.a. Money but even Rubio was changing his positions he said that he would now support a new age limit for purchasing assault rifles he said he would reconsider his previous opposition to banning high capacity magazines and you can see that for the moment at least Marco Rubio is caught between the new intensity of gun control activists the conventional wisdom is that the intensity is on the other side the pro-gun rights side and the n.r.a. Which is an important part of the Republican base his base the n.r.a. Is the most powerful corporate plus grassroots lobby in American politics and we're going to see if there's some movement on this issue so Meanwhile Republicans are gathering conservatives are gathering in an annual event called the Conservative Political Action Conference is gun control going to come up I'm sure it will Wayne La Pierre from the n.r.a. Will be speaking at that Conservative Political Action Conference this could be a chance for gun rights supporters to push back against. The ideas for more gun control or they could make a tactical retreat you know the background check bill that the president supports that's now in Congress is supported also by the end of. It's a bill that would tweak the background check system make it more efficient and it would not create a universal background check system N.P.R.'s Mara Liasson thanks Mara thank you there was a beautiful moment at the Olympics last night that might have gone unnoticed 2 u.s. In women's cross-country skiing Randle is $35.00 and after Sochi in 2014 took a year off to have her 1st child and there were certainly some really frustrating moments some doubt of whether or not I'd ever be able to make it back of the 242 u.s. Athletes and 20 are dads but there's only one mom to Randall this all seems like a fairy tale she'll read to her son one day for bobsledder Lauren Gibbs she called the experience of winning a silver medal with a lot of buyers Taylor surreal Gibbs had a successful job in the corporate world she had just turned 30 and finishing an executive m.b.a. Marketplace Tech is supported by Epson innovating the future of display technology with laser projection where there's business there's eps and learn more at Epson dot com slash for business the trumpet ministration has appeared to be quite pro space in January President Trump reinstated the National Space Council which hadn't met in. Almost 25 years that council had its 2nd meeting yesterday at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida but Trump's proposed 28 team budget for NASA suggests that the administration is interested in the space race but not that interested in paying for it not even to maintain and operate the International Space Station after 2025 here to walk us through the budget proposal is Marketplace's Washington and space correspondent Kimberly Adams what this document really is is the administration saying here's what we think is important and here's what we're planning to go in terms of our plans for space and so you know it doesn't give a hunted detail about things and really what's important is the trend lines where in and what sections of NASA the money is going up and what sections the money is going down there is a bit of a headline though it seems like about the International Space Station the proposal would and u.s. Payments for it by 2025 have private industry take over its management and that seems to be something that people are a little fired up about this plan does not say that the United States plans to d. Orbit the space station as in cause it to come back down and crash into the ocean or something like that they're just saying that they don't want to fund it anymore after this time period with the idea that private industry would step in and pay for its operation and this is kind of the m.o. Of the administration because this is a way to potentially bring down the cost of going into space now then about no longer funding the space station it's probably not going to happen I mean Senator Bill Nelson who is the ranking member of the Senate Commerce Committee the only member of Congress who's actually been in space called this a nonstarter when he was talking to the Miami Herald So the trumpet ministration is probably going to run into a bit of trouble yeah so as you look at this budget what's your takeaway what's your kind of top line here. It doesn't really matter it's a political document it is a political document because what we have seen especially in the last few months from Congress is that they are pretty much going to go their own way and unfortunately the broken way that government gets funded in our modern politics means that the nuance of these things often gets lost in some last minute dash to keep the government lights on and so what happens is you end up with some top line number and then later on people who work in executive agencies hammer out all the details that may or may not see the light of day until they've already been decided That's Marketplace's Kimberly Adams in addition to its education cuts astronomers are alarmed that Trump's budget would also kill funding for the wide field infrared survey telescope it is designed to look deep into the universe to find other planets and study dark energy the National Academy of Sciences panel said in 2010 that the telescope should be lead top priority for astronomy research I'm Molly Wood and that's Marketplace Tech. And other cities and they've been raising money they set up a Go Fund Me page to pay for the March yesterday morning after $2.00 days it had gotten about $1200000.00 in donations now it's up to almost $1700000.00 for about $21000.00 donors around the world the students have also gotten some large donations from celebrities people like George animal Clooney and Oprah so in total they've raised about $3700000.00 so far their Go Fund Me page says they'll use donations to plan the March with anything left over going into victims' funds now in the Miami Herald a spokeswoman says leftover funds would be used for what she called a can.
