Its believed the brakes may have failed. Abc7 news learned a San Francisco Police Officer is charged with two felony counts of hit and run. One of the men seriously injured from the accident is speaking from his hospital bed to melanie woodrow. She is live with his story. Melanie . Reporter the officer will be arraigned on those charges on thursday. A source close to the investigation tells me that he was out in a Fishermans Wharf area, saturday night prior to the accident that happened around 2 20. There are two victims, both men in their 40s. One has a broken neck, jaw, and broken nose. The other victim, victor perez tells me hes lucky to be alive. Victor perezs face is covered in bruises, his jaw, broken and his leg, broken. Im glad im here. From his hospital bed, he gave an interview. Im Getting Better but very sore. And just taking it day by day. He says he knows the person accused of hitting him and his friend is a San Francisco Police Officer known as the hot cop of castro. I couldnt believe it. Neither could his brother. Accidents happen. Okay. But to run away, that is what is repugnant. Reporter you can see one person running in the opposite direction. Its unclear whether it is the Police Officer. The passengers remained on the scene. A source close to the investigation says one was officers brother, the chief says investigators did an immediate search in the area but he wasnt to be found. His personal cell phone was in the vehicle. Chief suhr says the officer turned himself in eight hours later. George gascone says he expects the time line to be a challenge. How do we prove in front of a jury this individual was, or not, under the influence of a mindaltering lug or alcohol . Perez says he learned some witness whos stood over him thought the worst. Two had fled from a bus at the lock down in that area that is over. Both back in custody. In san jose, a toy store when police tried to stop a stolen car and ended in a parking lot of a toys r us. This store, one of two crime scenes, the store here just reopened and shoppers telling us theyre grateful for the great response from police. San jose Police Responded to a call of a moon who reported his vehicle had been stolen. The Police Caught up with the stolen vehicle on blossom hill road and the suspect ran into vehicles on the roadway. A struck a Police Officer vehicle. Shots were fired in the direction of the suspect vehicle. The driver kept going and ran unside and tried to hide. I just saw him speeding and police behind it. And when i came around, it was pulled up in the front. I was just telling people lets go. There is an emergency. You know . Everybody confused and didnt know what is going on. The good news is no one was hurt. Two Armed Robbers who shot a store clerk and took off with cash didnt get very far. They are identified and both from pitsberg. They were arrested after a robbery on lone tree way. The man theyre accused of shooting is in critical condition. Abc7 news spoke with the coworker who says the two tried to shoot him but the gun jammed. The family of a young woman who was stabbed to death say they feel sorry for the man accused of killing their daughter reading our hearts are broken at the loss of our beautiful daughter we cannot help but feel sorrow for his parents as they suffer the loss of a son just as we suffer the loss of a daughter. A legislator is pushing for changes to solitary confinement in youth detention centers. One supporter is a woman who lived in solitary confinement as an iranian prisoner for 400 days. That name is sarah short. After her terrible ordeal she believes solitary confinement ought to be banned and senator leno says there is a smart. Only a small window to look out of. Eddie flores was locked up in sol tear when he was 16. Youth can be placed in sol tear confinement for 23 hours for months at a time. Theyre proposing 53 Single Family units on just over five acres on property once occupied by the Jewish Community center. The center is within city limits but most neighbors have live in unincorporated contra costa county. Were not opposed to development. Tonight in alameda, city leaders will discuss a rent crisis that became so heated last month, two people were arrested. The city council talked about the possibility of rent control. Tonight, theyll take up the issue again and discuss rules that may allow land lords to evict tenants during that moratorium. The city council will discuss another contentious issue. The ice is melting, leaving a mess behind in addition to all of the tree limbs. Officials are asking people to wait on clean up until the ice thawed to avoid getting injured. As weather gets colder and rain begins, one group of newcomers is in need of coats and uniformeds. One school gets 5 to 8 of the kids per week. And how the community is helping. This 7yearold boy showed up unprepared. He said i dont have a coat. So. They heard about the ordeal from his teacher. Within days, coats were delivered to the bridge as kad my to students who come across the u. S. , mexican border. They put them on and think just receiving something new is a special moment for them. 20 of the students here are newcomers from different parts of central america. They are escaping the violence in their countries and of course, many of them dont have clothes, certainly no coats. Its cooler here and so they dont come prepared for being here in the cold and rain. Most of them are awaiting deportation hearings. There are others that need more clothes.
