Died. He was convicted of killing his exgirlfriend and her father in 1989. An investigation is underway to determine if it was a botched execution. It will add scrutiny to the Death Penalty debate. Reporter nearly two hours after his execution began, condemned arizona inmate Joseph Rudolph wood was pronounced dead. The convicted murderer gasped and snorted for more than an hour and a half. You heard a deep sucking, air snorting sound. Reporter they wanted to stop the execution while under way but the high Court Allowed it to proceed. At a certain point, you wondered if he would die. Reporter woods case will add to scrutiny after botched executions last january and april. Woods defense attorney filed several appeals that were denied. Everybody from what i heard said it was excruciating. You dont know what excruciating is. Reporter wood was convicted in the 1989 shooting deaths of 29yearold debbie deeds and 55yearold gene deeds. They say they have no problem with the way the execution was carried out. They are focused on their familys suffering. Its about the victims, it aint about the guy that went to sleep and never woke up. Now my family members can rest in peace. Reporter arizonas governor directed the States Department of corrections to conduct a full review of the process. Kirk hawkins for abc news los angeles. Just a week ago, a california judge ruled that californias Death Penalty system is unconstitutional because it is arbitrary and plagued with delay. The state may appeal that decision. There are currently 748 men and women on death row in california. The state has not executed a prisoner since 2006. President obama spent much of the day with supporters and fundraisers here in the bay area. He left the hotel after staying the night, Howard Street was shut down overnight and all morning which did create a mess for commuters. Traffic was also snarled on Market Street when he went to the four seasons for a nonfundraising event with noninvited guests. From there the president boarded marine one. Our camera captured him walking to the helicopter as he headed to a fundraiser and encountering protesters. Reporter the president s motorcade caught a lot of people off guard, residents, caregivers, trades people and bicyclists got stopped by road blocks and caught protesters staging at the wrong spot thinking this is where they would get mr. Obamas attention. One Group Supporting Immigration Reform and Inhumane Treatment got within a half block of the fundraiser. We can ask him to move some of that relief towards the boarder and spending more money in detainment centers, putting the relief towards health servi services, safety net services, Foster Care Services for children. This incident was caught on cell phone video as police grabbed 23yearold nate howard and forced him to the ground. He was in san jose to give a keynote speech at a graduation ceremony. Wayne freedman has more from san jose. This is the incident, march 24th captured on a cell phone showing police and a group of african americans, many san jose state students. Watch carefully as police throw 23yearold howard to the ground. His lawyer says for no reason. Today the Lawyers Committee for civil rights filed a conduct complaint against the san jose police. There is some concern that Excessive Police force was used and the allegations in the complaint are that excessive use of force was implemented, that it was unwarranted because he posed no danger, no threat to safe Public Safety and didnt appear to be interfering with the duties, as you can probably see the from video included as exhibit a in this complaint. Nathaniel howard is based out of california who teaches High School Students to write and perform poetry. He made a speech earlier that day at the graduation ceremonies. After the incident he filed a complaint. When he heard nothing from them, it escalated into the conduct complaint with the San Jose Independent Police Auditor which works directly with the departments internal affairs division. We determine if the investigation is thorough, if their analysis was objective. If we disagree how they handled it, too bias, we sent it back. David louie reporting. In livermore tonight, a woman has been arrested for leaving her children in the car while she was at a casino gambling. The children were not injured by 37yearold nett was taken into custody on a child endangerment charge. The children, ages two and three have been left strapped in their seats unattend in a locked car on sunday when temperatures outside got up to 83 degrees. A fire forced two rides to shut down at six flags discovery kingdom today. Park officials evacuated the thriller gorilla ride and shut down the Monkey Business ride. Another gas leak in the same neighborhood where a leak forced homes to be evacuated monday. So now folks there want to know why pg and e refused to call the Fire Department for help. Reporter robin says on monday pg and e crews attempting to adjust the gas line broke it causing a gas leak that forced an emergency evacuation of her home and others living nearby. Next thing we know, and hes yelling at my husband get out of the house. Reporter robin and her neighbors immediately feared the worst. Can you smell san bruno . We were terrified. Reporter Alameda County firefighters were back on the scene today. We were there to speak with robin about what happened on monday and quickly noticed as she had earlier, the strong smell of gas coming from the meter. Were smelling gas again. Reporter robin called 911 and when fire crews arrived, there was a gas leak. The pg and e guy broke it. The situation is safe. The situation on monday was safe. Reporter but if gas was gushing from the valve and crews felt the need to evacuate homes, why did pg and e leave it to robin to call 911 . Because pg and e says making calls to 911 is not part of their protocol when dealing with a gas leak. Our policy is to ensure we send an appropriate gas crew out that day to ensure that the situation is safe and to appropriately respond to that situation. Reporter pg and e says crews were right to evacuate the home but stress there was never a threat to the community after a safety perimeter was set working on the meter and no need to call 911. The team working today determined that robins meter is older and in need of additional repairs. We are going to have another gas crew come out and actually make a full replacement of that valve set. Reporter robin says she will be grateful to put the entire incident behind her. In castro valley, nick smith, abc 7 news. A wellknown designer collapsed and died yesterday in San Francisco while riding a motor sized skateboard. 38yearold george was the founder of collective. He designed buy cycles, skateboard and a coffee brewer. San Francisco Police say he was riding his skate board along eighth street when he just suddenly collapsed. Authorities have not determined the cause of death, but again, he was only 38 years of age. Tourism in truckee could soon take a hit because of the drought. River levels are so low there rafting may not be allowed next week. That will certainly impact the small town in a very big way. Nick from our affiliate in sacramento reports from there. Working here every day on the water, at least six days a week. Reporter there arent many jobs im jealous of but hes about to lose. Three to four weeks of work, yeah, have to go find something for another month. Reporter k hill and the rafting companies in tahoe city will be closed by this weekend. The river is dropping a bit every day. So its getting to the point where its too rocky and our boats wont make it. Reporter during the quick trip down the river. We ran the ground several times. Patchy fog overnight tonight and it will get warm at the coast but were not going to see a hot pattern reach the coastline. So here is the deal. Slightly drier air has been filtering in and will continue to do so over the next couple days but the biggest change youre going to feel is the fact that those temperatures will sore tomorrow and again on friday as this hot air mass starts shifting back towards the bay area. So temperatures not just here in the bay area but around many parts of the state will be on the hot side. Tomorrow morning starting out mainly clear, mild, mid 50s to low 60s, a few patches of fog right around the coastline but we shouldnt be seeing a lot of it out there and then as we head towards the afternoon, the fog will quickly disappear. Imagine how delicate that procedure was. He went back for a routine checkup after that. The story on this miracle baby. Reporter eighth month old Elijah Alvarez is curious and playful but not always healthy. These are pictures of elijah following an of ragperation to e a cyst from his lungs. Like a normal baby like nothing happened. Reporter while in his mothers womb, doctors discovered an abnormality in one lung. The lung is pushed up and compressed because this big round circle doesnt belong that. Reporter that round circle is a cyst about the size of a tangerine. It wasnt allowing elijahs left lung to grow and it was pushing his heart to the other side. I was shocked. I was sad, of course. Reporter doctors had to drain that cyst while the baby was still in utro, a procedure that had never been done before. Dr. Jane had been trained at another childrens hospital. Its very much like puncturing a water balloon with a small needle and placing a shunt that would hold the hole open and the balloon, or the cyst deflated. Reporter iediately after he was born, surgeons were ready to surgically remove the now deflated cyst and part of his lung. On the right side, perfectly normal, on the left side he has approximately 1 3rd but that lung bud 1 3 the size is growing and learning to function normally. Reporter his parents showed us the size of the scar left from the operation. I feel happy. I dont have words to explain how grateful i am to have him here with us. Reporter doctors will continue to check the left lung to see how its developing. You can expect hell play soccer or whatever other activity he chooses like every other child. I used to play soccer, so hopefully he can play soccer. Reporter for now, hes just enjoying the attention that comes with being a miracle baby. In stanford, leeann melendez.
