But they did find bullet fragments on the second floor of the building, likely fired from a handgun. Police say a doctor may have been targeted. The doctor did not recognize this person. A School Concert had been scheduled tonight at a nearby middle school. That was canceled because of what happened there. The usgs is reporting a strong earthquake struck off the west coast of Vancouver Island tonight. It happened just after 8 00 an hour ago or so at a magnitude of 6. 7. The epicenter was about 58 miles offshore. So far no reports of injury or damage. It was a good distance offshore. And the u. S. Tsunami Warning Center did not issue any sort of tsunami warning. You know, a lot of teenagers consider running away from home every now and then. And some actually do it. But none with as much drama and danger as the bay area boy who climbed into the wheel well of a jet and flew to hawaii. We have new information tonight about why that 15yearold decided to take such a foolish risk just to get away from home. The boys father is talking tonight, and another relative spoke with abc 7 News Reporter david louie. It is an interview youll see only on abc 7 news. Reporter it appears resentment was growing inside the familys santa clara house when the 15yearold learned his fathers wife was his stepmother. The stepmothers cousin and he is a san jose insurance broker. He spoke to abc 7 about the stowaway and why the Santa Clara High School student decided to run away. There was resentment being told by his stepmother to do chores. He has to wash the house and dishes, and even cleaning. And he dont want to take it. A lot of children are willing but he wasnt. Reporter his teenager only recently learned his father remarried. He was separated from his mother at age 2. This woman is not my mom and train me like this. I need my mother. Reporter however, she was surprised to learn the teenager walked into the san jose airport where he hopped over a fence and hid undetected around a hawaii jetliner in the darkness. He told airport staff in maui that he left home after an argument with his parents. The father said his son liked computers, but that quote he had a tough time with his school work, math class, science. He didnt study while in africa. Starting high school here was difficult. He was running away from pain. Of some sort. Reporter will his parents reject him . Are they ashamed . 48 hours after he is being reported missing, they never report it to the police. Reporter Santa Clara Police say there is no missing persons report. A Police Officer came to the house late in the day, but no one answered the door. The stowaway remains in a honolulu hospital. A pedestrian is in Critical Condition tonight after getting hit by a car in San Francisco at the exact same time police launched a crackdown on dangerous drivers. Sky 7 hd was overhead this morning. A man believed to be in his 30s was in the crosswalk in the citys sunset district at 20th avenue and wawona. The 20yearold female driver stayed at the scene and spoke with police. Police say alcohol or drugs were not involved, and she appeared to be going the speed limit when she hit the man. Well, it is a war of words between the as and the Oakland Coliseum authority tonight with the Team President saying he is done with negotiations over a tenyear lease. The warriors announced the team has purchased a piece of land in San Francisco to build their new arena. The raiders missed a deadline to give the Oakland AlamedaColiseum Authority their letter of intent to stay. And last night, the as rejected a tenyear lease offer from the Coliseum Authority. Does it feel like everything is kind of unraveling with all three teams . Well, things have been unraveling for a long period of time. It just didnt start today. Its been my position not to fight the warriors. Reporter Alameda County supervisor nate miley chairs the Coliseum Authority board. Miley says he cant do much about the warriors. He is mystified by the raiders, and a bit angry with the as who baits says wants 5 million in back rent forgiven as a condition for signing a new lease. And thats important, because thats taxpayers money. Reporter this afternoon the as released the following statement, quote, we owe no back rent or any other amounts. We did deduct rent payments in the past for items that we are allowed under our lease, but that was our negotiated right. These fans dont care much about the details. The city of albany in the east bay has reached what is being described as a historic settlement with 28 homeless people. Theyve been living at the albany bulb, a former landfill. But when the city tried to kick them out last year, they claimed it was in violation of disability laws and their personal Property Rights are being disregarded. Each of the residents will get 3,000 if they agree to move out by this friday. The city will store their belongings if they want for up to six months. The 5yearold oakland boy is recovering from eye surgery after being shot with a paint ball gun. Abc 7 News Reporter nick smith has more now from Childrens Hospital oakland. That. Reporter this is 5yearold corrmauri hunter roughering from a surgery he had after being shot in the eye with a paint ball game. His mother angry and in shock, refuses to leave the hospital without him. Im not going to allow it, im not. He is suffering right now. Reporter el london elonda told me they were parked here at ninth and wood streets when a teenaged boy fired several rounds of paint at the car. Her car remains covered in thick loads of paint. It was one of these rounds that hit corrmauri in liz left eye. Doctors say the lacerations to his cornea may heal on their own without additional surgery. San francisco is stepping up its effort to crack down on what officials call shady landlords. City attorney Dennis Herera filed lawsuits against two Property Owners accused of illegally converting residential apartments into tourist lodging and marketing them online onsites like air b and b. Herera says the defendants used the ellis act which allows landlords to evict longterm residents if they are taking them off the rental market. Safeway lost more money the last quarter as well, 76 million. Researchers from the National Oceanic and atmospheric administration, noaa used sonar. Vic lee has the story. Reporter the city of chester is resting some 217 feet deep at the bottom of the channel just inside the golden gate bridge. This shot from sky 7 hd shows the approximate location of the shipwreck. This is what the ships wreckage looks like on sonar images standing upright. Unlike todays clear blue skies, a dense fog enveloped the golden gate channel on august 22nd, 1888. The steam ship, 106 people aboard was leaving the bay, the oceanic, a ship twice as large was coming in from asia. The oceanic had a manifest of 74 chinese crewmen that were on board, 27 caucasian officers. Reporter Robert Schwemmer is with noaa, the National Oceanic and atmospheric administration. They had less than a half mile visibility. So they were that close. Reporter not only was there dense fog, a flood tide was churning the waters along with a fierce riptide. All of it was affecting the city of chest areas navigation. It was fighting that riptide and that current. So the bow of the oceanic penetrated the hall of the city of chester ten feet. It was described as a knife cutting through cheese. Reporter after the collision, scientists at the time surveyed the area, mapping where they thought the ship sank. But for more than a century, no one had located the city of chester until last may, when one of noaas sonarequipped boats found it. Laura pagano who was on that boat said her team was overjoyed. We were incredibly excited. I think we all stand up and cheered. Reporter the discovery of the ship is also giving noaa researchers an opportunity to clear up accusations made at the time about the chinese crewmembers of the the oceanic. You know, there is a lot of racism at the time that the chinese crewmen had not responded favorably to rescuing people. They were the ones on the bow of the oceanic pulling survivors from the city of chester aboard their ship, and diving into the water, saving one child. Becomes more widespread, more concentrated. Its going to be a wet midday on friday. Then the rain dissipates, and friday night it ends. By 11 00 friday night, well be looking at rainfall totals between a tenth of an inch and half an inch for most of the bay area. Its not going to be a soaking rainfall. But it will be wet for most of the day on friday friday. Over in the sierra, well get a late season snowfall from late thursday into early saturday. 6 to 12 inches of new snow in the higher elevation. Paratroopers are on the ground in poland, a show of force that was not lost on russia, which hurled an ominous warning today saying an attack on russian citizens in ukraine will be seen as an attack on mother russia herself. Well, back here in this country, georgias governor signed a controversial gun bill into law today. Critics call it the Guns Everywhere bill. Proponents refer to it as the safe carry protection agent. So that people who follow the rules can protect themselves and their families from those who dont follow the rules. The law goes into effect july 1. It also applies to visitors from 28 states. Bay area man giving up his quest to conquer mt. Everest this year. 49yearold john reiter told his wife today that he plans to leave base camp tomorrow to begin a threeday hike down the mountain and to come home to Sonoma County. His decision follows the announcement made by the sherpa Mountain Guides that they will not conduct any more expeditions this season. Theyre essentially on strike, demanding more pay, better insurance, and better death benefits following the avalanche that killed 13 guides last week. A strange case in Sonoma County meantime where a local politician is on trial for felonious peeping. Efren carrillo is a county supervisor who is still on the job as jurors hear the evidence against him. Abc 7 News Reporter wayne friedmfree freedman. Reporter after two days in court, the biggest question may be who was supervising the supervisor early in the morning of last july 13th. Today the court heard from Police Officers who detained the supervisor after a neighbor identified only as jane doe said he broke through the screen and blinds of her bedroom and then banged on her door at 3 30 in the morniny dressed. Today the jury saw a photograph of the supervisor clad only in white briefs and socks, handcuffed and sitting in the back of a police car. And they heard Police Interviews with supervisor carrillo after the incident. Quote, i dont want to sound like a stalker, carrillo told one officer. And, quote, i should have walked out with my pants for sure, and i didnt, he said to another. Supervisor carrillo told officers he was buzzed that night, but not drunk. When pressed, he admitted that when he tried to visit his female neighbor, he could not remember her name. After the prosecution rested today, the defense moved to have the case dismissed for lack of evidence. The judge did not buy into that, siting the possibility of trespassing and noting that as supervisor, carrillo did break the screen and possibly push through the blinds and jane does bedroom window, then he could very well have peeked.
