Well have the numbers coming up in the forecast. There are questions tonight after two little girls died in petaluma when their mothers car plunged into the river. T sadly, this is the second such accident in Sonoma County in a little more than a week. Wane freedman is on that story. Reporter it is a tragedy that killed two young girls. The chp says might have been prevented had at least one of them been in a car seat. No car seat. They should have had a car seat based on the age . Yes. The younger should probably be in a five point, and there were no boosters in the legal. Reporter two girls died when their mother lost control while traveling north on petaluma boulevard. Witnesses say the car swerved left overcorrected, tumbled into the trees, flipped over and landed upside down in six foot deep water of the petaluma river. Only the mother survived. She is okay, yes, physically. We dont know if she was distracted. What the situation was. Reporter within minutes. Pete la ma officers and members of the Fire Department dove in and tried to rescue the girls. By the time they pulled the girls out, they were gone. In petaluma many knew the people involved long before Police Released their name. They sent food to the First Responders. The two dead little girls and their father were regular customers. Very polite, always happy. Reporter now they are gone. One other irony. You may remember the accident last week. A truck went off the road into the river. Two little girls inside that truck. Drowned. A similar accident. Many of the First Responders here today planned on attending that funeral. Clearly, they were not able to make it. In petaluma, wayne freedman. A 46yearold man is facing charges for trying to smuggle a bomb into a courthouse in stockton. Private security guards discovered the device at a check point around 9 30 this morning. Deputies then arrest third down man, gabe rriel sylvester. A car crash set off a Chain Reaction in San Francisco that ended with a big bang. The bang was when a manhole cover blew about 25 feet into the air in a street in the financial district. It started when a car hit a fire hydrant. That sent water into the electrical vault causing the blast. No one was hurt. The loud screeching noise you hear on bart could become a thing of the past. Reporter many of us have dealt with this before. The loud and oftentimes distracting sounds of bart. Theres a lot of screeching. A lot of clatter. Reporter some say its a constant struggle. Tonight abc7 is learning this is the second bus from this company thats caught fire on a freeway in less than two years. Weve uncovered safety violation in this companys history. Reporte it was a fast thinking driver who pulled this tours and charters bus off to the side of the road after the engine caught fire. People on highway 101 and northbound 880 snapped these pictures of the flames just before 10 00 last night. According to federal motor carrier safety administration, the company has a conditional safety rating meaning it is out of compliance with one or more safety requirements. Out of 37 vehicle inspections over the last two years, 10 vehicles were placed out of service for violation. Thats 6. 6 higher than the national average. The most severe violation, worn down tires. The driver of the 2002 coach that caught fire last night attempted to put the flames out. With his fire extinguisher. Hes required to carry it and he had. But he wasnt able to extinguish the fire. A man was in a truck when it fell into a river and was floating downstream. He was able to crawl on top of the trucks cab. A friend called for help. Members of the Alaska National guard rescue squad out of Mountain View were called in to help rescue the man. It required a high hover technique using a 180 foot cable. Governor brown has declared an emergency. Many worry the forests may disappear because of pfeiffers insects and the drought. Its so bad that loggers and environmentalists have actually found something that they agree on. This saw mill northeast of sacramento is like others in the state. It has all the business it can handle now. Its overwhelming us. Mark luster is with sierra pacific. After years of battles with environmentalists, the states logging industry had been in a nose dive. We think the mid 80s over 100 saw mills closed in california. Only about 25 saw mills are left, and suddenly thats not enough. These logs here unloading are off the king fire. You can see the dark thats burning the side. The king fire burned 100,000 acres in 2014. Crews are still salvaging wood from that and other big fires around the state. At the same time saw mills have logs from forests hit by drought and a bug invasion. The holes are the entry points. Reporter these beetles may be small but theyre deadly. Looking at probably around 80 million dead trees in california. Sections of forestland are turning brown overnight. This forest is in the tahoe district. Crews are racing to take out infected trees hoping to save whats left around them. But for most of these trees, its probably too late. Thats why logging companies and many environmentalists want to focus on thinning forests that are still green before the bugs arrive. Ed smith is with the nature conservancy. The level of activity needs to be increased tenfold to increase the health of the forests. Reporter forests are in trouble because weve been putting out naturally occurring fires were decades. They are at high risk for mega fires that burn hotter and longer than nature intended. Smith believes its time to cut some trees down. Were not talking about thinning everywhere in the forests. Areas that need it the most and will have the most beneficial impact on the health of your forests. Reporter the cheapest way is to let Timber Companies do it and sell the wood. That would mean more saw mills and logging jobs. Theres some areas where there are sufficient numbers of medium sized trees that could be sold to help pay for the thinning activities. And many places we have removed most of all of the large trees. Its a very sensitive topic. Reporter however we pay to restore the forests, environmental groups and loggers agree we need to act fast because wildfires and bark beetles arent going to wait around. Happening quickly. They support a bill now in Congress Called the wildfire disaster funding act. It would help assure a steady flow of money to improve forest health.
