But the Police Association unexpectedly introduced its own proposal. This issue has resurfaced following the deadly shooting of mario woods by police. It happened in december in the bay view neighborhood and was recorded by cell phone cameras. Abc 7 News Reporter has more. Reporter only a few people attended this evenings Police Commission hearing as the chief was ready to make a push for tasers. But the surprise was the police union regarding a proposal for its unions. Not even the chief anticipated this this morning. The first condition is to arm every officer with tasers as soon as possible. We want the officers to be trained first in crisis intervention, and all the radio cars out in field to have an automatic external defibrillator available. Reporter on the other hand, its believed that the Police Department is proposing to train a few officers at a time. Obviously, arming them all at the same time will cost the city a lot of money. It will take a lot of training in a short period of time, and money, but it needs to be done more. Reporter the training would mean doing it on their off time, or doing overtime. Following mario woods shooting, the mayor and the police chief are once again asking that the Police Officers be allowed to carry tasers. Many are saying that when an officer is threatened, taser or no taser, police are always trained to use their guns. Its enough for police to be able to say their lives were in danger. As i say, their training is to use guns in such a situation, not tasers. Reporter the Police Commission is not expected to vote tonight. In San Francisco, abc 7 news. Health officials today confirmed a case of zika virus in northern california. The patient has a mild case and is recovering at home. The patient recently travelled to an affected country. Came down with some of the signs and symptoms, a fever, a rash, after traveling to one of those countries. And decided to seek medical help at that time. And thats when it was discovered. Earlier today, the head of the centers for Disease Control told a Congressional Committee that scientists have found the strongest evidence to date linking zika to the birth defect microcephaly. Right now, the most important thing for americans to know is this. If youre pregnant, we recommend you not go to a place where zika is spreading. And if youre pregnant and you live in an area where zika is spreading, do everything you can to protect yourself against the mosquito bites. The number of confirmed zika cases in the u. S. Now stands at 66. All cases were travel related, except for one. The cdc is working to get more information about the virus, which is spread by mosquitoes. San Francisco Police tonight are looking for a group of thieves who stole more than 10,000 worth of merchandise from the ferragamo store just before closing last night. Melanie woodrow is on the story. Reporter there is no broken glass or signs of forced entry outside of ferragamo. Brazen thieves walked into the luxury store tuesday night around 6 30, grabbing more than 10,000 worth of merchandise before taking off. In this particular case, they did use force to stop one of the employees who was trying to do the right thing and prevent them from leaving. Reporter the way these thieves operate is similar to others targeting highend stores recently. Its the style, which is go into a Department Store when theyre open, grab all the high ticket items that are in the vicinity, and run out. 10,000 for me would be like half of my store. Organizers of fridays mavericks big wave surf contest are hoping its not a bad omen. A big wave contest scheduled for today on oahus north shore had to be anticipated when the estimated 4060 foot swell did not show up. That same swell is the one that mavericks organizers are counting on for fridayee event. Drew . Lets talk about our wave conditions over the next 48 hours. A High Surf Advisory will go into Effect Tomorrow at noon and last through saturday at 8 00 in the evening. Current wave heights in San Francisco, 4 1 2 feet. We are expecting swells from 11 to 13 feet over the next 24 hours. So what does that mean for the Mavericks Invitational . Pillar point. The weather not really an issue. Temperatures in the mid 50s to lower 60s. But of importance, were expecting breakers as high as 25 to potentially 35 feet. So that would be great news for all of the surfers. Reporter police are still trying to figure out the motivation of this man, a 37yearold from berkeley who investigators say went on an hourlong rampage, smashing into dozens of cars, including police vehicles. Several dozen. Were talking about several dozen scenes. This is a mass scene. He was driving at very high speeds, extremely erratic. At some points going the wrong direction on the roadway. There was a car that was weaving in and out of traffic, coming down coolidge. And proceeded to not only sideswipe her car but the car in front of her. Reporter it started just after 8 15 when the suspect hit several cars in east oakland and then drove to west oakland, with police and chp in pursuit. A mitsubishi hit this brandnew car. Did he flash a gun at you . No. He shot past me. When he hit me, he got a flat tire. You could hear the thud of the tire. Reporter the suspect abandoned his car and ran into the neighborhood. Im glad that the police didnt use lethal force on him, because i heard they hit him with bean bag rounds to calm him and get his cooperation. Reporter Police Brought witnesses out to identify the handcuffed suspect who police have yet to identify. A tiger at the Sacramento Zoo was killed this morning after a fight with a newly acquired tiger. 15yearold female tiger baha died from her injuries when the zoo introduced a new male tiger named mo han. Officials immediately tried to separate the two tigers. The aggression started very quickly, and my team tried to separate the two cats. When the male was safely closed indoors, my team rushed in to assist baha and moved her immediately to our veterinary hospital here on grounds, where efforts to resuscitate her were not successful. Awful. Baha had been at the zoo since 2002. She was the mother of five cubs. Mohan was acquired in december. The two tigers were kept apart when mohan arrive but were able to see each other. Some passengers didnt think they would survive. The captain still trying to explain why he headed out to sea in the first place. Reporter its a vacation to the bahamas many passengers are ready to forget. It was really rough. Yeah. We were nervous. Reporter the Royal Caribbeans anthem of the seas has returned. The ship docked in new jersey after Hurricane Force winds sunday, over 100 miles per hour, and 30foot waves forced the ship to turn back. I thought that the boat was going to tip over. You could hear the sheer ferocity of the winds. Reporter the ships captain explaining in this video broadcast internally to all 145 state rooms he didnt realize the magnitude of the storm when the ship set out. The whole thing was not bigger than this. And it just exploded. It so intensified. Passengers were ordered to stay inside their state rooms for eight hours. You never can tell once you get out to sea, things happen, and you just have to survive it and ride it out. Reporter in a statement, Royal Caribbean tells abc news weather isnt great, so he slowed down his speed to smooth it out. The man convicted of assassinating senator Robert Kennedy will not be getting out of prison. Today a state parole board denied his bid for a 15th time. The faa is now saying they could cause a, quote, catastrophic fire. And the agency is providing incredible new images to show exactly what they mean. It could lead to catastrophic aircraft loss, and current Fire Suppression systems cannot effectively control a fire. They power our computers and tablets and can simultaneously overheat. Think about the house fires and hoverboard fires that have started recently. Two 747s have crashed, the publi packages of batteries they carry suspected of contributing. Thats why the recommendation that is batteries are carried, they are separate from other Flammable Materials and the number of batteries be restricted. Airline pilots want that the batteries be listed as hazardous. We cannot continue to lose these airplanes due to fires that are uncontained and will quickly bring an airplane down. Somebody just left them. He called police and searched for the owner.
