Well check out whats going on with chp. Better news for highway 17. Just into our newsroom this morning. As you mentioned, we have learned that highway 17 near scott valley is back open. All lanes. Crews just finished clearing a mudslide in the last few minutes. Workers were there 24 hours later trying to clear it out. We have kris sanchez there on the scene live. Who knew that brake lights could be such a beautiful thing. But they are going in both directions here at highway 17 it is a good thing. We got a tiny break in the rain. You can see the traffic is slowing both lanes, both directions right now. That is a far cry from what crews have been dealing with the last 24 hours. You can see crews scraping away the rocks and the mud than came down on 17 between Scotts Valley and the summit. That is a labor that took about 24 hours. The mud, the rocks not the only complication. Tree stumps, wires, branches, loose dirt, mud, gravel. The party was safely extracted. There is no major injuries reported from that. Now the process is just cleanup. Now, you heard that officer mention a vehicle that was trapped. That is a tv truck from one of our colleagues another station. He is doing well. He is recovering. They were already spilling of. And water from the creek caused pretty much flooding in gilroy, closing roads in the process. The last round rain left orchards fully submerged. They have been so busy. The urban search and caress cue team helped save a family. It is the only Swift Water Rescue Team in the county. Its been a while since we have had a significant rainstorm that has filled up the creeks like that where we have had to do water rescue like that of that nature. The teams go through of hours of training every year just for times this. Pg e says it has made models for the number of hours ahead and bringing in crews from washington, oregon, and arizona. 275,000 people were without power at some point of the weekend. They have been good. Not digging out by trying to keep up with the storm that will be with them the next couple of days. Here in truckee, 5800 feet. Up at donner pass, they are looking for six to seven feet of snow. Just in time for the weekend. Snow is the big part of their economy here. And while they love it, they say that last storm drove a lot of people out of town. They are hoping this storm will bring people back into town once interstate 80 reopens. Pretty nasty conditions. Guerneville an area to be watched for the potential of flooding along the river. Tiburon, heavy rain. Half moon bay seeing rain there. The winds will start to pick up as well. We are going to anticipate it is is going to hit 37 feet on wednesday afternoon. And it will start to trend downward there. What we are seeing is a number of road closures. When i spoke to people they are telling me that this something to expect if there is rain in this area. At this time, theyre just hoping for the best. The dam is up river. It is in danger of breaking. They will let the water out. They will open the spillways and the spillways will flood us. Some of the lowlying areas have been eye evacuated. So we have flood warnings in effect for the Russian River and the napa river. King tides return. That may create coastal flooding. That will be rising through the 8 00 hour, noon. We know slippery roads will be a factor. You can do that most of your drive. We have the south bay now pushing north 280, highway 85 into santa fe, silicon valley. All the crashes have cleared. He faces trespassing charges but not vandalism since nothing was done to the sign. 2016 will go down as one of the warmest years in history. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association said last year was the second hottest year ever. 2012 was the hottest year. Scientists have been tracking weather patterns for 122 years now. Alaska reported its hottest year ever. 2016 saw the second highest number of weather disasters. 138 deaths, more than 46 billion in damage in the united states. Ironically, this weeks storm is limiting the amount of water to santa cruz residents because a pipeline has been damaged connecting the citys water supply system. Workers have shut down the pipeline. As a result, the city is facing a shortterm water shortage. Everyone is being asked to cut back water use by 30 for next week until crews finish the pipeline repair. For now a lot of rain saturating the bay area. It is is creating a dangerous situation. Look at this dramatic video. The dam down right before your eyes. A giant redwood crashing down at highway 17. The giant redwood was pretty unstable ground. Caltrans actually had to cut the tree down. This is the same spot where a mudslide was blocking traffic. Today in the bay kris sanchez has been reporting from that location all morning long. Were happy to report all directions on of highway 17 at that spot. They managed to clean it up. Kris will be joining us in a few minutes. It may seem hard to believe, but the water levels until now were very low. You can see the spillways are open. Up 13 feet since yesterday and still rising. This will be the important thing. We have had so much snow falling in the sierra. It is looking much better than even last year at this point. Now we are looking at San Francisco, the Golden Gate Bridge. Drivers making it across with water splashing up. Be prepared for the potential of standing water on the roadways, especially later on this afternoon, into the evening. As this heavy rain continues to move through. We have seen more of a steady rain with pockets of downpours here and there. One moving across the Golden Gate Bridge right now. And also the bay bridge too. As you drive down 280, san mateo, heavy rain moving through there. More instead rain and pockets of rain moving through the south bay, south of san jose at 280. And also 101, where that intersects up to about a quarter inch per hour. And once again, that may cause problems out there as you head out for your drive. Allow extra time to get there. North bay, 101, san rafael, petaluma, rain moving through. The winds will pick up through the day. A high wind warning has been issued for all the areas shaded in orange. This is where they may peak 65 Miles Per Hour today the. But the saturated grouped and the winds pigging up. We are looking for the potential of more Power Outages. Make sure you are prepared. And the flood watch for all the areas shaded in green, we could have rain totals one to two inches and three to six. Were watching the north bay. The napa river, more flooding will be possible. In going throughout the day, pockets of heavy rain, getting more widespread and intense through the evening commute for the north bay. And to the south, as we into dont, the potential for thunder and lightning. A lot of concerns here with this next round of rain. Then we start to see things breaking up, becoming more spot y. More heavy rain through wednesday night, early thursday morning before the system final winds down. So the rainfall in parts of the bay area, may reach one to two, over two inches of rain for the santa cruz mountains. Things will be clearing out and cooling down for the weekend. The wind has picked up. And the king tides continue to rise. Behind me, you can see them coming in to the pacifica pier. It will reach 6. 9 feet. Tomorrow they will reach seven feet.
