This is was from just about an hour before hand. A lot of people are referring to this as the ghost ship. I want to point out this building was not permitted to hold people, just permitted to be a warehouse. Thats one of the many things that are still under investigation. You can see in this clip of the clutter inside of the room where that party took place. It is very cluttered because theyre saying this was this labyrinth of art studios. Fire officials also pointed out that the stairwell inside to get from the first floor to the second floor was a makeshift one, essentially made up of panels. I want to show you some video of the candlelight vigils. Weve seen an outpouring of concern from those in the city of oakland wondering who is still inside the structure. Many are wondering if their friends or loved ones are inside of this. Were going to see a lot of heavy equipment and bull dozers to try to clear out debris so officials can continue to try to search for these folks. Its been an extremely difficult morning for the family of the missing. Many still do not know if nar loved ones are alive. Among the missing is peter wadsworth. He lived on the first floor of the ghost ship warehouse. Also not found, jennifer. Her friends say she was doing nail art inside the warehouse at the rave when that fire broke out. And Alexander Vega and his girlfriend, michaela, their families say they were inside the ghost ship and they have not been heard from since friday night. If my brother is there, i want to find him. I need closure. A Family Assistance Center has been set up at the Alameda County building. Its located 2425 east 12th street. One oakland city leader says no permits and poor Safety Measures at this building have become a common theme throughout the city. Here is today in the bays Mark Matthews. We know there are bodies that are in there that we cant get to. Reporter ray kelly told reporters that bodies have been taken from the building were the easiest to get to but more are buried under the collapsed roof and second floor. There are bodies trapped in there. Reporter kelly said the work will go slowly for fear of further collapse. There are many questions this morning about the safety of that warehouse. The Oakland Building and permits Department Said it was currently investigating complaints about the warehouse, including blight around the building and reports of unpermitted construction inside. Our Investigative Unit has been looking into these safety concerns, and were joined with what they found. We discovered the venue was already under investigation by the city of oakland over potential structural problems. Our Investigative Unit discovered the warehouse has actually been accused of a long list of violations over the years. And now after this latest fire, the city has launched yet another investigation into the warehouse that accuses the facility of having a makeshift oneway stairwell bult oilt out wooden pallets. Relatives of the buildings owner deny it. But firefighters blame the stairwell for trapping some of the victims inside that warehouse. An earlier investigation was launched into that very same property also citing complaints about some illegal construction inside. Now, our investigateive unit go ahold of a recent video showing a party in june. It shows cramped quarters with tons of wooden furniture. Some even lived inside but officials tell us the warehouse wasnt permitted for housing or any types of parties. They have been working throughout the night in this very delicate and dangerous operation of recovering the bodies from the rubble. As you know, that structure suffered tremendous damage after the inferno, and so firefighters and the rescue recovery crews need to make sure it is safe and shored up before they enter and go through the meticulous work. Going through that rubble to find out who is still inside. We know dozens of people are unaccounted for. At least ten people confirmed dead this morning. Some of the people though who were originally missing have been located. We are now waiting for a press conference from Alameda County Sheriffs Office scheduled for 8 00 a. M. The fire started friday night during a party at the warehouse. According to the online reservations, at least 190 people rsvpd saying they would be in attendance. Fire officials believe at least 100 people were actually inside the warehouse when this fire broke out. Right now the city of oakland says it is focused on helping the victims but that it will shift its focus to investigating what happened in the coming days. A vigil for the victims and the missing is being held at the chapel of the chimes in oakland at 8 30 this morning. Its video from a gathering last night. Family and friends comforting each other in a time of deep sadness. Many of the grieving were from the Arts Community in oakland. They tell us they have been watching facebook and other social media, seeing condolences on their friends pages. Theyre waiting for word and thats an agonizing wait. We spoke with a woman who has four friends who are still missing and a man who learned his friend, who was a talented artist, is also missing. They were amazing. You know, they were amazing, and im sorry for everyones loss, the people i didnt know. Its just i cant even its mind blowing. Its heartbreaking. Its tragedy. I mean, a lot of young people just, you know, going out to have a good time and wrong place at the wrong time, you know. Many people who showed up to pay their respects and pray told us they didnt know any of the missing, but they were touched by this tragedy and they are holding out hope. We have no major weather so today should be a good day. Sunny overall. Cooler temperatures which should help with the investigation. Not a lot of weather to get in the way of that. Now, here is a live look right now over the sunrise over walnut creek. Look at those temperatures, 34 degrees, and we are looking ahead to a lot more 30s and 20s in our future forecast thanks to a cold front that should be making its way in. Were expecting to drop into the overnight hours, but right now over the south bay were looking at scattered clouds. Out near the peninsula, 56 degrees right now. Mostly clear skies should continue through the trivalley. Also seeing 30s and San Francisco at 48 degrees right now. That High Pressure thats bringing all of this sunshine is expected to start making its exit. Behind it is going to be a dry cold front that will continue to drop these temperatures. Definitely chillier as you head into the start of your workweek. Along the coast, current temperatures right now remain in the 40s. 46 degrees for San Francisco, but out near santa rosa were looking at 35 degrees. Bringing it down to san jose at about 43 degrees and near santa cruz also in those 30s. Todays highs will be very similar to what you saw yesterday, upper 50s along the coast and up near napa and the north bay area well remain into the mid60s as well. Oakland at 62 degrees. Palo alto, 61. And near los gatos, 62 degrees for a nice, breezy, and cool sunday. Winds right now not really a major factor. We werent expecting these winds to pick up by much. It should remain fairly calm into the later part of the day as well as the evening hours. Showing you a look ahead at your future cast, right now the models are showing the pocket f possibility of a few scattered showers. Tuesday night a few scattered showers later into the portion of the day on tuesday night, but jumping forward to thursday, right now the models are still conflicting and showing a good chance for some widespread rainfall. Thats going to be centered mainly to the north. Should be spreading south to the region as early as friday morning with a good amount of rainfall right now. Its still conflicting in terms of how much rain and rain tot s totals, but were going to keep an eye on that as we inch closer to the later part of the week. It looks like it will bring a good amount of rainfall from the north bay bringing it down to the south bay and even noear th north bay. It can kick up concerns for the winds as we head into thursday night and early friday morning, but right now the biggest threat is going to be those cooler temperatures. If you havent found a way to take yourself out to san Jose Christmas in the park, it runs from 9 00 a. M. To midnight and i have driven past it a couple times and it looks like its a lot of fun. Nice, pleasant, and clear conditions. We should be topping out at 63 degrees. So around 9 00 a. M. Youre looking at about 48 degrees. As you head into the midday, if youre thinking about going around lunchtime, it should be climbing into the 50s and the later portion of the evening at around 7 00 and 8 clock, maybe upper 50s. If youre going to be out to midnight, you want to bundle up because it will start dropping into the lower 40s and youre definitely going to feel that christmas chill. By thursday and friday is when that possibility of that storm system does make its way in which could bring some good rainfall throughout the majority of the region and could also kick up some wind concerns. By saturday partly cloudy skies should be making way for a nice weekend ahead, and as we head inland, also looking at breezy to Cool Conditions for your sunday forecast. By monday we begin to see a chill mass thats going to cool us down into the 50s, dropping those overnight lows into the 30s, not just for the coast or the peninsula, but also in the valleys and, of course, inland as well with, of course, thursday and friday in the picture still showing some rain but were still pretty far out. They have not been heard from by their families, and authorities believe that the number of the dead will rise. We are expecting an update from the Alameda County Sheriffs Office at about 8 00 this morning and our pete serratos is live on scene. Well be checking in with him throughout this newscast, which continues through the 9 00 hour. Now, we are also learning more about the family that owns the building. The Investigative Unit has learned the ng family has several properties throughout the bay area. We spoke with the daughter and soninlaw of chor ng, the property owner. In a statement on her behalf, the daughter said, im sorry, but we do not have any comment. We are also trying to figure out whats going on, like everyone else. Were so sorry to hear about the tragedy. Our condolences go out to the family and friends of those injured and those who loths their lives. In addition to the warehouse ng is linked to 17 properties in the bay area either individually or through a trust. According to property records, one of those prorperties is an Apartment Building on lombard street in San Francisco. Records show last year inspectors found two violations of that property, both involved cracked walls and loose ceilings and they were later corrected. The city of oakland though has received four complaints on another prouperty owned by ng. Three of the complaints involved graffiti, the other had to do with sewer waste leaking from the property. None of the buildings received as many complaints as the warehouse in oakland. Thats on the 1300 block. Nearly ten complaints over the past ten years. The most recent involving potential a makeshift stairwell, blight, and up permitted construction. Now in the meantime, we are learning new details about the moments before the fire broke out. A person believed to be at the Party Friday Night posted this video on instagram just about half an hour before the inferno started. This video appears to show what it looked like inside the warehouse. As you can see there, a lot of people, very crowded, very difficult to get around. The person who shot that video is believed to still be among the missing. Kate larson from our sister station in l. A. Spoke with the coowner of 100 silk, a los angeles record label that represented the headliner at the party on friday night. Here is kate larson. Reporter just before fire in oakland filled this warehouse with smoke and flames, a musician stepped outside for a cigarette and explained to his friend by phone today what happened. He just said instantly like before his cigarette was done people started yelling fire and the very first thing was the corridor was so smoky. Reporter britt brown coens 100 silk,. Joel shanahan told brown how smoke quickly blocked the entrance and exit. It was just kind of immediately the one place you needed to get through was like already so much smoke, it was hard to breathe, and sto thats what it so extra frantic. Some people who were familiar with the ghost ship as that warehouse was known say they knew the building was dangerous. It was home to an artist collective, and some say that people were working and living there. One man who came to check on friends at the ghost ship said hes devastated by what happened but not surprised. I was worried about it before too. You know, i had been asked to move in there, and i refused. I felt like it was just a little too scary for me because of that. But wonderful people. Really wonderful people. Very creative, very talented People Living there, really good people. So many questions as you see pictures of the inside of that ghost ship. Were there sprinklers, were their smoke alarms . The man you just heard from says the person behind the collective who started the ghost ship traveled extensively and picked up artwork from all over the world to try to make that Industrial Base beautiful, but there were many, many questions about its safety. The bishop of oakland, michael barber, issued a statement to the city in the wake of this tragedy. He wrote our prayers and thoughts are with all who have died or are suffering from the tragic fire of last evening in the fruitvale neighborhood. We pray for the first responders, medical personnel and others aiding their loved ones. We will remember the deceased in our masses this weekend throughout the diocese of oakland. A couple minutes ago it was still at 37 degrees. Now, we are expecting chilly temperatures to remain in the forecast for the next couple of days as we begin to see the first cold air mass, the coldest of the year so far. South bay, 43 degrees. The peninsula, 56 degrees. Mostly clear skies. Should be carrying on through your sunday forecast. Right now at about 48 degrees in San Francisco and really all along the region still seeing the winterlike temperatures out near santa cruz at about 39. San jose at 43. Yesterday we did top out into the lower 60s for san jose. So if you thought it was cold yesterday, today is going to be a very similar weather pattern. San francisco is expected to top out into the upper 50s at 59 degrees. Out near oakland, 62 degrees. Palo alto and los gatos also expecting to maintain the temperatures in the 60s. In terms of wind, not a lot going on right now. Well remain fairly wa lly calm forecast. We are tracking the arrival and exit of a High Pressure system. We have a trough and with that trough we are expecting the possibility of a few scattered showers. By tuesday that could carry on to San Francisco and maybe even a little bit inland along the peninsula. Thursdays forecast, this is when were tracking our best chance for some rainfall across the bay area. All the way from the north bay down to the south bay with a greater chance for heavier rainfall as we head into fridays portion. Mainly focused along the north bay, but that could spread all the way south throughout the region to san jose San Francisco. Also point reyes as well. It will carry on right now. As of right now the models are showing friday night. Today if you have plans to be outside, maybe its a good time to check out the san Jose Christmas in the park. We should be topping out at 63 degrees. If you are heading to the Oakland Coliseum for that game day, be prepared. Were not tracking a lot of rain, but we are tracking those 50s which is going to make for a pretty chilly game day. Kickoff at 1 05 and we are expecting to drop down to the 50s and 40s overnight. As the cold front makes its way in especially along the valleys, we could be seeing temperatures at chilly as 30 and 20 degrees. It will be the coldest air mass weve seen so far across the year which means on wednesday morning you could be waking up to some of that windshield frost. On monday and tuesday, thats when were expecting to start seeing the drop in the overnight temperatures. Thats going to carry on through into your wednesday. For thursday and friday when we see the arrival of some rain chances, especially focused along the north bay which could be spreading south through the region as early as friday morning. Inland we are also tracking the rain chances into thursday, but monday and tuesday as we begin to track the arrival of that cold front, its a good time to remember to bring your pets indoors and protect all of those dear plants youre taking care of. It gets really, really cold out there. If youre going to be outside and you dont want to be caught in the snow.
