I want to show you the car involved in the slow speed chase on whats left of it. You can see the windows were busted out. Chp gave us an update. Used a bean bag gun to get suspect from that car. Then you have the tires. Successfully spike stripped the car where the eventually stopped here. But we do have video we want to show you guys when those bean bag guns were drawn on the suspect. Now, theyre telling us that they started off as a dui stop in menlo park a few hours ago. That took them from the 101 to the 92 to the 880 and then eventually here off of tunnel road now. When we first arrived on the scene we saw this suspect as he was abouting. Really trying to catch his breath. I asked chp what his condition may be. Like i said, it was a dui investigation. Eventually pulled him over in menlo park. Could possibly be a mental disorder as well. So we just spoke with them. Developing story from the south bay where a serial shooter targeting drivers in the san jose neighborhood has struck again. Not once not twice but six times just in the past six weeks alone. Area of blossom hill and monterrey roads. Its a very popular area, kris. Now police need the community to help. Ten cases since may 4th. Most recent just happened on friday. All but two of them have happened between midnight and 1 00 in the morning. And police say the shooter is firing a single shot at moving cars here. No ones been hurt but two years are reported because of flying glass or metal. Now, police are hope that police rather, people are hope that police will track down that shooter soon. Thats a coward. Thats a coward out there doing something aint supposed to be doing. And whoever he is, hes going to get caught. Its better to avoid the situation than to run into a situation and think what you would do, right . Reporter but it is hard to avoid this area all together. It is a major thoroughfare. Blossom hill road is three lanes in each direction between monterrey road and poughkeepsie road where the ten shootings have been reported. San jose police have canvassed the neighborhood. Notified neighbors. Looking for clues. They are not revealing though what kind of weapon were talking about here so we dont know the extent of the damage of those cars sustained nor the potential for injury or even whether its the same weapon at this point. Police are being tight lipped act that but they are urging anyone who knows something to say something. Theyd like to get this person off the streets. In san jose, kris sanchez, today in the bay. Kris, thank you very much with. We have heartbreaking news to report out of iraq as well as outrage in that country after a fire at a baghdad hospital killed 11 newborns in a Maternity Ward there. That fire broke out overnight at a hospital in eastern baghdad. 29 female patients and 7 babies were evacuated. But a lack of fire escapes apparently prevented fire crews from rescuing the 11 newborns and that is creating huge backlash. Officials say that fire was caused by an electrical failure. Sentencing today for a drunk driver who killed a marine just home from afghanistan. They convicted alexander yohn. Two years ago his car struck and killed Lance Corporal andrew silva in fremont. Silva was riding his motorcycle when yohn ran a red light. Yohn kept on going but crashed into a pole. Silva left behind a wife and a 2yearold son. We now know when embattled santa clara judge aaron persky will issue his next legal decision in a sex crimes case. Persky a judge who critics believe issued too lenient a sentence to brock turner. Turner sexual assaulted a woman who was passed out. 15 days from now persky is going to consider whether to reduce the sentence of a man convicted for possessing child pornography. In that case persky sentenced the man to a fourday jail sentence when he could have received a penalty of up to a year in jail. The man now wants to reduce his sentence to a misdemeanor. Bringing down the old bay bridge. Heres a live look at the bridge where demolition crews are set to hit a major milestone today. This morning caltrans began work to complete the second phase of the leepart process. To dismantle the bridge. Crews are removing the and final trussle on the old eastern span. It weighs more than 25 tons. Lit be lowered on to a barge and cut into pieces before being hauled away to pier 7. The entire process they say could take up to a week. I want one little piece. It comes as our winds to increase and the cooling returns for a little while. And then High Pressure builds for the end of the week causing the valleys to reach into the 80s and 90s. In San Francisco, you wont notice much of a difference over the next seven days. It will stay in the 60s, morning clouds, afternoon sunshine. The valleys is where the difference will be. A lot more dramatic with mid 80s today. And then the mid 90s for the weekend. And that continues into early next week. We head over to mike with a lot of slowing heading out of san mateo. We did have construction scheduled for a full closure of 101 around dunn but whatever road work was going on scheduled to be completely clear by 5 00. Just got alerted, still more slowing. I had to check with chp handling the monterrey system. Yes, there is a crash. Were looking at your most of your drive and nothing unexpected. However, northbound 101 is jammed coming up through morgan hill and gilroy. We said that the construction overnight had cleared at dunn but closer to the golf course there, the crash blocking your two left lanes. Thats the source of all the slowing that will be a jam coming up into san jose. Its holding off the traffic in through the Silicon Valley so that might be better news for most of our viewers. Toward the bay bridge, standard flow of traffic. Metering lights is on. Highway 24, 13, both move smoothly. On the surface streets, pete suratos is there following up on a overnight slow speed crash. Pete . Reporter they just took away that car that was involved in that slow speed chase. Behind me off tunnel road off 24. Thats whats left of the remnants of that car. A little fire kind of came out after they used that successful spike strip, that car where it ended. Lets show you that video now. According to chp this pursuit started in menlo park for a possible dui around 2 00 a. M. The car backes up and attempted to strike the officer. The car took offnd the pursuit went through multiple freeways off 880, 5880 and 980 and tunn road. Bean bags were pulled out on that suspect and the car tires blew out after being spike stripped by menlo pd. The suspect was arrested. I asked chp about his condition. Once he was taken into custody he was very sweating very profusely. He had signs and symptoms of intoxication or possibly a mental disorder. All that right now is under investigation. We gave him medical treatment immediately for the dog bite and hes on his way to the hospital now to receive whatever medical treatment, whether its physical or for his mental stability. Reporter slow speed chase roughly took about three hours. That car hitting speeds of 25 Miles Per Hour throughout. Chp did not mention if any other drivers were hurt as a result. Morely six years after a pipeline exploded leveling a sam bruno neighborhood a verdict is in against youllity found guilty that destroyed dozens of home and killed eight people. Bob redell is live in san bruno where were expected to hear from the city in just a couple of hours. I know we both worked here when all of this happened. Its interesting to now see a little bit of closure for some of these people. Yes, the city will respond to that verdict against pg e. A little bit later this morning. It will be at a News Conference here at San Bruno City Hall schedule at 10 00 this morning. Yesterday a federal jury found the power and gas utility guilty of a total of six criminal charges, namely five counts of violating the Pipeline Safety act and one count of obstructing justice during the investigation that leveled a san bruno neighborhood six years ago. The blast killed 8 people and destroyed 38 homes. The federal prosecution was initially seeking a penalty against pg e of over half billion dollars. This would have been on top of the 1. 5 billion fine that the state has already imposed on the utili utility. But then without explanation the u. S. Attorney reduced the maximum possible fine the judge can impose on pg e to just 3 million, which has people here in san bruno outraged. We hoped the judge sends pg e a message that its not okay to risk peoples lives by having inadequate records, manipulating the data, and my leisleading fel investigation. Im sure all the utilities in the United States is going, wow, we better get ahead of that. Thats a good thing there, too, to probably get them all to clean up their act. Pacific gas and electric released a statement that reads in part, we want our customers and their families to know that we are committed to reearning their trust by acting with integrity and working around the clock to provide them with energy that is safe, reliable, affordable, and clean. Bob redell, today in the bay. Thank you very much. Two mothers whose lives were shattered by last years deadly berkeley balcony collapse will push today for new safety regulations in sacramento. Six students in total died in that collapse that incluesed ashleigh donahoe. Later today her mother and mother of Irish Exchange student who was seriously injured will testify. The pair will speak in support of new legislation calling for greater oversight and more transparency in the construction industry. K67 35. Activists plan to hold a silent march tonight in the north bay. Organizers are angry about a recent job promotion for the deputy who shot and killed 13yearold andy lopez in santa rosa back in 2013. Lopez was armed with an air rifle when he was shot. The deputy was never charged. In may according to the Sonoma County Sheriffs Department he was promoted to sergeant. Protesters tonight plan to meet at santa rosas fremont park. Two chp officers recovering right now after a crash in the south bay that reportedly involved a drunk driver. And this situation would have been a lot worse. The officers were at the scene of a crash involving three cars on highway 85 just south of unit avenue. While everyone was out of their cars the chp says the suspected drunk driver plowed into one of the vehicles. That caused a Chain Reaction crash that injured the officers who were thrown to the ground. The mercury reports the worst of their injuries was a possible sprained ankle. Wild chase in the east bay ends with a car filled with people slamming into a cement truck. Police say they started when a woman with four passengers in her car hit an officer yesterday afternoon. The officer was treated onscene but police say the woman took off and eventually collide with a cement truck. All five people in the car were injured. That includes a 3yearold girl. So far we have not received an update on their conditions. Palo alto leaders are calling it a miracle no one was hurt when a large piece of concrete fell 30 feet off a building on to busy university avenue. Happened over the weekend when a decorative cornice fell off the bank building. Years of water seepage may have been the culprit. Now engineers are keeping a close eye on that structure which first opened in 1906. The Building Owner is working with a team to make sure that they are reenforcing any of the concrete so that we dont have a situation like this in the future. It is a beautiful building. If youve ever walked by. Engineers indicate the building is structurally sound even though you can see cracks in areas of the facade. They believe the piece that fell was in far worse condition than other cornices on that same building. You want buildings to be secure and the result of earthquakes. So far we have not heard any word of injuries or damage to a moderate sized earthquake north another bay area. 5. 0 magnitude quake which struck a little bit before 8 00 last night near clearlake. The epicenter was 50 miles north of hillsburg. Clearlake residents felt a lot of shaking. So far there have been at least two minor aftershocks. Take a look at the latest videos. Some fires burning in lake county as we stay north. Were told that are two residentses have burned and homes were briefly evacuated. The two fires popped up last night in the lower lake and canyon areas. Both fires are now contained. Bringing down the old bay bridge. And palo alto expect a high of 78 degrees. Also at 78 degrees in concord. 87 in livermore. A little bit warmer there but cooler than yesterday after having some 90s in spots. 83 in santa rosa. And San Francisco at 67 degrees. We wont see much of a change in these temperatures along the coast. But tin land areas heating up in in the 90s. Ill talk about that coming up in less than ten minutes. Now as we head over to mike, we are looking at whats happening on the peninsula. Thats right, kari. Getting over to the peninsula, slower now. We have a smooth flow of traffic but look at that, over here towards the san mateo and dumbarton bridges as well as in the south bay. So pretty typical pattern. Zoom over toward the trivalley. More slowing for southbound 680. No problem to or at the dublin interchange. As the debris was cleared around whipple, smoothed out. Dumbarton bridge and san mateo bridge. Live look, camera on the hayward side. We also have one on the peninsula side but theres not a lot of activity to show there. All of these smokes making their way to 101 with no delay. Back to you. Here in the bay area you see a lot of tech cars on the road. A man credits teslas autopilot feature for saving his life. Plus, brand new information on a Silicon Valley layoff. Rowing, the rowing morning session had to be canceled because of the rain. But Beach Volleyball is going to be going on as scheduled out at copacabana beach and the road cycling is tell on schedule as well. The big draw last night we saw the women take gold back to back gold for the team. Making olympic history. Tonight it is the mens turn. In the mens individual final. And being part of that will be a california man whose nicknamed mr. Hollywood. Hes from southern california. His name is sam mckol low and twotime olympian and he is hungry to get his first individual medal. So they will be back in the pool as well. The women, Katie Ledecky from stanford will will be there, Missy Franklin in the 4 x 2 relay. Missy franklin was champion in 2013 but shes certainly been struggling this year in the olympics here. Quite teary eyed the offer the day saying she has let her teammates down. Adrian will be in the 100 free olympic title. Adrian cut it close yesterday in the preliminaries but he will be in the water again tonight hoping for gold. And then Beach Volleyball, thats up and its going to happen. Santa clara native Kerri Walsh Jennings and april ross have their final group match today. Theyre going to be do it in copacabana. And then our highs reaching into the low 70s just briefly. Most of the day will be in the 60s. And gilroy today expect a high of 79. 71 in san mateo and valley today up to 67 degrees. Lower 80s for santa rosa while oakland is at 71. And pleasanton today, 85 degrees. Theres still some hot weather over the Desert Southwest but then look at what happens as we go farther to the north. This is whats impacting our weather. And an area of low pressure moving into the Pacific Northwest causes cooling just briefly. Only for today. And then this High Pressure builds in quickly. And it provides less marine air. That means we wont have the onshore flow. And the valley temperatures will reach into the 80s and 90s. But you wont notice much of a difference in San Francisco. Well be in the upper 60s for the next seven days. Morning clouds and some afternoon sunshine. In the valleys we will see the highs in the mid 80s today. That now makes a total of ten occupied vehicles that have been hit on or near blossom hill road right by monterrey road. In the past three months. The shootings began in may and police say there were three more shootings in late july and two more last week. All of them have happened after midnight in an area that some neighbors describe should say they now avoid after dark. Its better to be, you know, avoid the situation than to run into a situation and think what you should do, right . We all have families so we have to worry about it. Two drivers have been wounded by shrapnel or flying glass. Police say that theyre making an all out effort to catch the shooter or shooters but hope that someone in the area can provide a tip to help them solve this mystery. At 6 57. We are expecting reaction later this morning from san bruno city leaders to pg es being found guilty of criminal charges tied to the deadly 2010 pipeline explosion. Jurors found them guilty of six criminal charges, that includes obstruction of justice during the san bruno investigation. Other counts were tied to Pipeline Safety violations. Critics are infuriated because pg e will only have to pay at most a 3 million fine. Prosecutors drastically reduced possible penalties down from 500 million. 6 58.
