Willie in for matt this morning. And news just breaking as we come on the air. Former nfl star, Aaron Hernandez, found dead in his prison cell overnight. Apparently he killed himself. Nbc National Correspondent Miguel Almaguer has the very latestment we are learning just about this. Reporter this happened just a short time ago. Officials say hernandez was found hanged in his cell overnight, in a correctional facility in massachusetts. Medical personnel attempted to perform lifesaving techniques, transported hernandez to the hospital where he was pronounced dead just after 4 00 a. M. This morning. According to officials, the former football star had attempted to block his door from the inside by jamming it with various items. Just last friday, the former patriots tight end was found not guilty in the shooting deaths of two men in 2012. But hernandez was already serving a life sentence for murder in the 2013 killing of odin lloyd. Massachusetts state police are on scene. Hernandezs family has also been notified. President trump is instead focusing on irans terror ties which six world powers didnt consider at the time because they thought it was more important to stop iran from getting a bomb. In a strong signal, the new administration appears ready to rip up the deal. This morning, the white house talking tough on iran. Secretary of state Rex Tillerson saying the Trump Administration is weighing whether to break the terms of the landmark Iran Nuclear Deal signed almost two years ago. During the president ial campaign, thencandidate trump called it the worst deal negotiated. The deal is one of the worst negotiated deals of any kind ive ever seen. Reporter secretary tillerson admits iran has been upholding its end of the bargain. But in a letter to House Speaker paul ryan, he said iran remains a leading state sponsor of terror through many platforms and methods. The 2015 deal signed by the u. S. And other world powers restricts tehrans Nuclear Program in exchange for lifting of oil and other economic sanctions for ten years. Without the deal, experts say, they would have had a Nuclear Weapon if they wanted within months. Israels Prime Minister netanyahu has been a fierce opponent of this nuclear deal. But critics say the trump review will anger european allies and raise questions about why the white house wants to risk letting iran go nuclear when its already in a major crisis with north korea which already has an arsenal of Nuclear Weapons. They have most of the money or are in process of getting most of the money. When you look at the deal when it was signed until now, theyve not gotten better. Theyre helping the hewittitys in yemen, backing assad, they help hez bol lae. Being a large state sponsored terrorism. The deal looks at those issues the disconnect, the behavior rof the regime from a Nuclear Program. It was to be a disconnect between the Nuclear Program. Let me ask you about the uss carl vinson. The president said he was sending in an armada. And yet, it was 3,500 miles away and in the indian ocean. Lets not get tweets in the navy. How does that happen . He said, absolutely not. Thats what this is all about. What did you suggest to the president he do, beyond putting pressure on china. Tell china, if they dont take care of it, we will. What does that mean . It means if china cant stop the regime from building a missile that can hit the american homeland, we would do everything, including diplomatic sanctions and military strike to stop the missile program. Look at it this way. Do you really want north korea to have a missile that can hit california with a Nuclear Weapon on top of it . 20 years ago, north korea didnt have any Nuclear Weapons. Every republican and every democrat has screwed up north korea. Theyre close to getting a missile to hit the homeland. Now is the time to stop. For a preemptive strike . Thats what it would take. Im not going to allow vote in the senate, north korea to develop a missile with a Nuclear Weapon on top to hit america. Not going to happen. China can stop it if they want to. If they dont, i think President Trump will. If the u. S. Were to launch a preemptive strike, we would be at war in the Korean Peninsula . It would be terrible. It would be bad for the Korean Peninsula. Bad for china. Bad for japan. Bad for south korea. It would be the end of north korea. But it would not hit america. This is a seat that republicans have long held. But it wasnt a seat that trump won very handily. A point and a half. The democrats get the top votes in this special election. Trump won by a point and a half. This guy got clintons vote. I think you see a casting in this race, hollywood versus georgia. But the south is changing. Atlanta is changing. Theres districts like this all over the country, that are getting more moderate. And i think karen will do a good job. Shes probably the best republican we could have chosen. Bush is at Methodist Hospital in houston for continued observation. His Spokesman Says the 92yearold is just fine. President george h. W. Bush is in good spirits this morning. The 92yearold admitted last friday, after a cough prevented him from getting proper rest. It was determined he had a mild case of pneumonia, which was treated and has been resolved. Hes now being held for further observation, while he regains his strength. Back in january, the former president spent two weeks in the hospital with pneumonia. For a time, he was in the icu and put on a ventilator to help him breathe. At the same time, his wife, barbara bush, spent five days in the same hospital for bronchitis. The pair had just celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary. Recovering enough to take part in aregame coin toss at the super bowl in houston. And earlier this month, the 41st president was visited by his former rival and now close friend, president bill clinton, who gave him colorful pairs of socks. A remarkable end to the manhunt that gripped the nation. This morning, investigators are trying to piece together how Steve Stephens spent nearly 48 hours on the run before he took his own life. The manhunt for the killer is u his own life. The manhunt for the killer is over. But for Robert Godwins family, the pain is not. I want to see him go to trial because god awful what he did to my brother. Reporter police say stephens randomly chose godwin and murdered him, posting the horrifying video on facebook. He took all of the dignity he had. We all know we going to die. But not like that. Not for the world to see. Reporter the manhunts violent end came 100 miles north of cleveland, in erie, pennsylvania. A sharpeyed employee at this mcdonalds drivethrough recognized stephens. The manager said the suspected killer ordered mcnuggets and fries. But workers stalled his order and called 911. It was going to be a minute for his fries. Wanted to make sure the proper people were contacted. Reporter stephens sped off. Surveillance video showing his car fleeing the scene. The units psp is behind a white board. Reporter after a short chase, he took his own life. The 37yearold had no criminal history but had recently filed for bankruptcy. I lost everything. I lost everything i had, man. Reporter in a video rant, he blamed an exgirlfriend for making him snap. He was a sweet man at heart. Reporter his friend, jason, says stephens called him just minutes before the murder. He told me to call him right back once i saw the facebook post. I attempted to call him back and he did not answer. I went to the police once i saw it. Reporter many here in erie, pennsylvania, are hoping the mcdonalds employee might be in line for the 50,000 reward. Robert godwins family is planning his funeral. His daughter telling us, they have an overwhelming sadness. Some uplift when you think about what the mcdonalds workers did in the moment and the courage it took to keep him waiting there, knowing about his violent history. Courage, quickthinking. She was on a lunch break, watching a live stream of her son at the childrens courtyard when it happened. Within seconds, it was racing there. Coworkers recording the incident. The day care worker is 22yearold jasmine lexis torres. She is now free on 10,000 bond. She had no prior history. There was no incident. No concern as far as a flight risk. And she had been cooperative with us. Reporter the childrens courtyard operates 55 centers in 4 states. Texas state records show, the plano center has been cited for 29 deficiencies, nine of those rated high. State officials report all of the deficiencies had been corrected. A statement from the childrens courtyard reads in part, we have strict policies and procedures to ensure the safety and wellwill of our children. We dont tolerate deviation from those standards. Upon being aware of the situation, we immediately notified the authorities. The childrens courtyard Facebook Page exploded with outraged comments. Made me so apg ngry, i cant put into words. Grown adults roughing up kids. What is wrong with you . The owners of this facility should never run a day care again. Since the video only shows part of the incident, police want to get the bier recording for their investigation. According to the childrens courtyard, Jasmine Torres has been fired. The child, by the way, was taken to the hospital and examined. And thankfully doctors say, he didnt suffer any physical injuries. Medical personnel attempted to perform lifesaving techniques. They transported him to the hospital where hernandez was pronounced dead just after 4 00 a. M. This morning. According to officials, the former football star had attempted to block his door from the inside by jamming the door with, quote, various items. No suicide note was found. Just last friday in a boston courtroom, the former patriots tight end was found not guilty in the murder and shooting deaths of two men back in 2012. But the 27yearold was serving a life sentence for murder in the 2013 killings of odin lloyd. Massachusetts state police are onscene. Hernandezs family has not been notified. Its a stunning fall from grace, from a football star that was recruited out of college, and quickly made million. Hernandez, again, found dead early this morning. Police say they are still investigating. Officers are onscene at the hospital and at the prison cell. Investigators say their investigation could take quite some time, as they try to piece that all together. Hernandez was in a single cell, not with the general population but was alone in his cell. Savannah, back to you. Miguel, thank you. Police in fresno, california, says racial hatred drove a gunman to kill three on tuesday. Gadi schwartz talks about the system that was used to locate that suspect. Reporter the sounds of the alleged shooting spree, captured by fresno police. Were getting reports of multiple gunshot incidents. I heard gunshots. Reporter within minutes, dispatch calls flooding out. Another victim over by the catholic church. Three people dead. Police seen here capturing a man named kori ali muhammad, who began his shooting rampage after he was named the prime suspect in the murder of a Security Guard last thursday. He made a decision he was not going to go to jail for shooting a Security Guard. He was going to kill as many people as he could. Reporter investigators say muhammad first opened fire on a utilities truck, killing zachary randalls, a newly hired Customer Service representative. It was his first ride along on the job. Police say muhammad killed two more people in front of a Catholic Charity before he was caught. Uttering the phrase and offering this confession to officers. I did it. I shot them. I said, you guys are looking for me. Reporter on facebook, police say muhammad had many antiwhite and antigovernment posts. But police are not calling this a crime of terror but a crime of hate. Today is the start of the annual tribeca Film Festival, founded in the wake of the september 11th attacks. In addition to showcasing movies, this year the festival is highlighting television, and Virtual Reality and video games. We have Robert Deniro and jane rosenthal. Good to see you on the occasion of opening day for the Film Festival. This year, its not just films. Youre getting into video games, television. So, if its on a screen, its at the festival . Yes. If its a good story, were platform agnostic. Stories are happening good stories are all over the place, whether you see them on netflix or hulu. Video games have some of the most amazing nonlinear story telling. Were going to show all of it. Everything is changing. How an audience reacts and wants to participate. Thats changed. You know that from, you know, your tweet board over here. I know youre a big video gamer. Youre very excited about that. Yes, i am. About that part of the festival. How has the business changed, the landscape changed, since you started in 2002, in terms of streaming, netflix, amazon, hulu, video on demand, people not going to the theaters as much . Even i can say its changed a lot. She can give the details. Its a new world. It didnt exist. It didnt exist. Iphones didnt exist in 2002. Twitter, facebook. Things like uploading, downloading. We didnt do any of that. It did not exist. But at the same time, its not like the parts have gotten worse. If anything, theres an explosion of material available for somebody in your line of work. There is. And thats the good part about it. The format, watching something on a little screen like this, as opposed to watching something in the theater is a different experience. They work but dont work. Theres a lot i dont know. If you watch a comedy, you want to watch it with an audience. It feels right. I dont imagine watching a comedy on a little screen like an iphone or something. Jane, whats the one film we will walk out of this years Film Festival talking about . Whats the big draw . Well tonight, its clive davis and the music of his years. That will be a spectacular evening. It really is. Clive is a cultural icon. And the artists he worked with from aretha franklin, bruce springsteen, simon and garfunkel. Its quite extraordinary. And afterwards, there will be a little concert. A few of clives friends will show up. Tickets are available. I think tickets are not available for a rare godfather reunion. True. Who is coming . Is this hard to talk you into . Or were you for it . It wasnt it francis was not too inclined to want to do it. Hes been asked a lot. But i said, come on. Lets try and do it this one time. It will never happen. Radio city, it will be great. Blah, blah, blah. And he was great about it the he said, okay. And the rest of the cast said they would do it, too. Once francis is in, everybody is in. One and two, yes. Are you excited to see it in that way again . Yeah. Id like to see it. Ill come in and see parts of one and two. I dont want to the other times when we had good fellas and king of comedy and the other one taxi driver, we had the interviews during the screening. So, we couldnt get the experience. This time i want to. You two are busy working together. You have wizard of lies coming out, the story of bernie madoff. And a lot of people are excited about the irishman. Martin scorsese, you, joe pesci. Were trying to get joe. The madoff part. What was it like to step into his shoes . It was interesting. The one thing i have always felt before i did the movie, was that the sons never knew anything about it. And once i did it, i realized that i felt even more they didnt know had no idea. Thats why they had a tragic the whole family, ending, one killed himself and the other one had a relapse of a cancer that had been supposedly cured. And so, its very sad for them. The kids. Good morning guys. Reporter this troop is a little bit different. Theyre the first of their kind right here in new york. Troop 6000 is united by how they play and how they support each other and how they live. At all times. Reporter troop 6000 is just like any other girl scout troop. Were all girl scout sisters. Were all a pack. Reporter they dance. Reporter they color. They pledge to make the world a better place. But unlike their fellow future leaders, these girls are all homeless. Do you think people treat you differently because they know youre in a shelter . No. Reporter do you do all of the same things that the girl scouts get to do . It feels like youre not alone. Reporter feels like youre not alone, why . It shows youre not the only one that has the same problem. Reporter run out of the sleepinn, a motel turned makeshift shelter in queens, families here share tiny beds. Like the children of single mother giselle burgess. I felt ashamed. I felt like i let them down. Reporter thats why she wanted something for her kids to look forward to. So, she started the girl scout troop in february. With the help of the department of homeless services. How do programs like this help to solve the problem . Shelter used to be three hots and a cot. Now, we have 70 of the shelter system is families, we have to help children not back in the shelter system when they become adults. Reporter troop 6000 is the first in new york city, designed exclusively for homeless girls. Theres 22 members. Our mission is to give girls courage, confidence and character. Reporter the number 6, setting them apart from the troops in the citys five boroughs. Putting these trail blazers in a class by themselves. If you see a girl with 6000 on, it makes you weve gone through the same thing. Reporter their duties in the scouts helping highlight their determination, even when things get tough. Theres one thing you wanted me to know about your girl scout troop, what would it be . That we all share. Reporter all share . Everybody is equal. Reporter everybody is equal. We all act like were real sisters. Reporter real sisters. Oh. Real sisters, guys. The new york chapter covers the costs associated with troop 6000, the patches, the vests and the membership fees. Theyre accepting donations to expand their program across new york. There may be other cities too to get a great idea. If youre having a bad day and saw that piece, youre having a good day.
